NMSD Family Housing Program 2017

Page 1

About The Family Housing Program at New Mexico School for the Deaf gives the chance for selected families to live on NMSD’s campus. Families have wanted this rich learning environment for their child but, until now, distance has made it impossible. Young deaf and hard of hearing children need fluid early language input, family education, peer relationships and quality classroom instruction. Often families do not have local resources that help them provide this type of environment for their deaf child.

Dream! Explore! Achieve!

Eligiblity To apply for the program, families must meet the following criteria: • The deaf or hard of hearing child will be under the age of 5 until the end of 2017. • The family has limited availability of family and deaf education resources in their home community. • The family is willing and able to meet the family program requirements for the benefit of their child.

Applications will be reviewed by the Family Housing Program Planning Team and selections will be made by Friday, May 26th. All applicants will be informed of their application status at that time. Adult family members must pass a background check that will be facilitated by NMSD upon arrival to campus. The family is responsible for payment of the background check for each adult 18 and older, and a fee for releasing the record to the school.

Expectations The program will allow children to attend NMSD while their family receives on campus housing in exchange for participation in monthly family programming (15 hours of ASL instruction, 5 hours of family-specific workshops, 5 hours of volunteering with the NMSD school program and on campus events).

A selected family with a deaf child over 3 years old will be considered to be on the “approved Family Housing Program waiting list” until an IEP meeting in the home district has determined NMSD as the appropriate school placement for the child.

Application Deadline:

Friday, May 19th, 2017 to be considered for the program which begins in August 2017. Applications can be sent to:

Application Process NMSD Early Interventionists and Educational Consultants will disseminate program information to families who have age appropriate deaf or hard of hearing children. These families will be provided with application forms to express their interest in program participation. The application allows families to choose if they plan to either: • Move permanently to Santa Fe – These families receive campus lodging for one school year, allowing them to establish an independent life in Santa Fe. • Maintain permanent residency in their home community – These families stay on campus during the school week and return to their home each weekend.

Lisa Ortega, Department Secretary New Mexico School for the Deaf 1060 Cerrillos Road Santa Fe, NM 87505 The housing, provided at no cost, will offer self-contained sleeping rooms, a bathroom, an apartment sized refrigerator and a microwave. There is a shared living room and full kitchen. A $100 security deposit will be required. Participants will also be eligible for inexpensive meals in the campus dining hall (NMSD students eat lunch in the dining hall at no charge). Families must provide their own transportation and are responsible for enrolling non-NMSD student siblings in the Santa Fe Public Schools. Pets are not allowed in the program and families will be required to follow all campus policies while living on campus.
