Group Piano Music Moves For Piano


GROUP PIANO At Brookline Music School, we value offering classes that are research-based and provide developmentally appropriate instruction to our students. Our group piano classes, Music Moves for Piano, apply Edwin E. Gordon’s Music Learning Theory to piano instruction, while building on the revolutionary thinking of Orff, Dalcroze, Suzuki, Kodaly, and Taubman. From the beginning of lessons, students learn how to audiate (think musically) while they develop keyboard performing skills. Each class has a maximum of four students.

SEQUENCE OF CLASSES Keyboard Games A (Pre-K–Kindergarten) Two-term class (A1 and A2) that includes singing, chanting, moving, responding to musical patterns, creating at the keyboard, and playing short pieces. Keyboard Games B (Pre-K–Kindergarten) Two-term class (B1 and B2) that builds on the skills learned in Keyboard Games A.

Intro to Music Moves for Piano (1st–2nd grade) One-term class for new students or 1st grade students continuing from Keyboard Games A1 or A2. In Music Moves for Piano students learn to: • • • • •

Improvise, play by ear, transpose, and harmonize Sing and play Play with technical ease and freedom from muscular tension Listen to and perform music with understanding Become independent music thinkers

Level 1 (1st–2nd grade) Two-term class (1A and 1B) for students that have completed Intro to Music Moves for Piano or 1st grade students that have completed Keyboard Games B1.

Music Moves for Piano:

Level 2 (2nd–3rd grade) Two-term class (2A and 2B) that builds student repertoire. Students study an increasing number of solo pieces from a variety of genres.

Levels 3, 4, and 5 (4th grade and above) Levels 3, 4, and 5 guide students in advanced keyboard, audiation, and improvisation skills. Students play more advanced solos that are learned by applying audiation skills and through reading notation.

Is based on research Is versatile, adaptable, and appropriate for all ages Helps students to learn music as an aural art Is creative – students make music from the beginning Develops the entire musician
