CHAMBER MUSIC AT BMS

WHAT IS CHAMBER MUSIC? In Western classical music, Chamber Music is the art of small ensemble playing, most often in combinations of string instruments, woodwinds, and piano. Unlike players in an orchestra or band, chamber musicians each play a unique part in the music, which fits and interweaves with the other parts in the group. All the parts are equally important and featured.

Groups are formed at Brookline Music School based on the age and approximate level of players. Chamber Music is generally appropriate for students who have taken at least two years of private instruction, and are ages 9 and up, including adults.

Groups meet for as many as 15 weekly rehearsals per semester with a faculty coach, and present at least one final performance. Groups are encouraged to rehearse on their own outside of coachings.

A short placement audition with the Chamber Music Coordinator is required for new participants in Chamber Music.

Students enrolled in private lessons at BMS receive a discount on Chamber Music tuition.

What is so exciting about Chamber Music? • First and foremost, it’s fun! Chamber musicians work together as a team, in a social, collaborative atmosphere, but also develop and exhibit their individuality as musicians. •

Chamber Music is a fantastic way to sharpen many important musical skills. Chamber players must listen carefully to themselves and their teammates to keep everything together. Playing together develops a strong sense of rhythm and meter, and a keen ear for intonation, articulation, and dynamics.

Playing Chamber Music offers exposure to centuries’ worth of exciting music, from Bach to Bartok, Mozart to Martinu!

A few common examples of Chamber Music genres: • String Trio: violin, viola, and cello • Piano Trio: violin, cello, and piano • String Quartet: 2 violins, viola, and cello • Flute Quartet: flute plus string trio • Piano Quartet: piano plus string trio • Woodwind Quintet: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn
