Special Program Features •

Student-specific consultation, including classroom observations and recommendations for the educational team

Comprehensive student evaluations and career assessments

The New Mexico School for the Deaf Center for Educational Consultation and Training provides a broad range of information to public schools, families, and students with a special focus on language, communication and literacy development.

Consultation to Local Education Agencies in establishing priorities for improving their educational programs for students who are deaf of hard of hearing

ASL Immersion – a fun and rigorous program held in Santa Fe each summer for any skill level

Support is available through:

K-12 Interpreter support happens through district or regional workshops, mentoring, ASL training, observations and statewide events

Sign language instruction for families and educators

Partnerships with the Public Education Department and other community agencies in developing resources and guidance materials

ASL Service Corps - ASL Tutors are placed throughout the state to provide ongoing ASL instruction in the homes of families and in school programs that deaf and hard of hearing students attend. This team also provides community events that offer ASL practice and opportunities for families to connect

Transition support for students changing programs or transferring to NMSD

Support to School Programs When developing an appropriate educational program for a student who is deaf or hard of hearing, it is critical that his or her language and communication needs are carefully considered.

Information, Training and Professional Development Professionals and all New Mexico families who have deaf or hard of hearing children can access training opportunities. These events cover a wide range of topics: •

Workshops for K-12 interpreters

Eligibility Children and youth who are deaf or hard of hearing, their families and educational teams are eligible for educational consultation services if the child is enrolled in public school programs and has IEP or 504 services.

Educational Consultation Team Educational teams in public schools receive consultation and training from staff who have many years of experience teaching deaf and hard of hearing students. Comprehensive student evaluations are conducted by diagnostic team members fluent in the student’s mode of communication, certified in their areas of expertise and experienced in evaluation students who are deaf or hard of hearing. NMSD is an agency that serves as New Mexico’s clearinghouse for information and resources on the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
