DOCUMENTARY MONDAYS “NEVER FORGET” TALK BACK SERIES
Tulsa’s ‘Black Wall Street’: The 1921 Attack on Greenwood (in recognition of the 100th commemoration of the Tulsa Massacre)
The 1921 Attack on Greenwood was one of the most significant events in Tulsa’s history. Following World War I, Tulsa was recognized nationally for its affluent African American community known as the Greenwood District. This thriving business district and surrounding residential area was referred to as “Black Wall Street.” One hundred years earlier, in June 1921, a series of events nearly destroyed theentire Greenwood area. The massacre, which began on May 31, 1921 and left hundreds of Black residentsdead and 1,000 houses destroyed, often overshadows the history of the venerable Black enclave itself. Dr. Katrina Sims, Department of History and Faculty-in-Residence, Division of Student Affairs, and Dr. Gabrielle St. Léger, Assistant Vice President Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Hofstra University will facilitate the talk back. Joining them will be Dean of Students Advisory Board member Brittany Johnson, and Residential Assistants Briona Diaz and Layla Ruiz.
