FEATURED SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES 75 Acts of Kindness!
As Hofstra University commemorates its 75th anniversary, we invite all members of the University community to celebrate this milestone with a commitment to service by participating in up to 75 acts of kindness! Members of the Hofstra community and alumni are challenged to make a difference in their respective communities. It doesn’t matter whether you volunteer five hours or 25 hours — every act of kindness counts! Attend the Kindness Kick-off Reception on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at 4 p.m., at the Lowenfeld Conference and Exhibition Hall, Axinn Library, 10th Floor, South Campus.
Class of 2014 Service Project
The Class of 2014 will have many opportunities to serve the community. The Office of Student Leadership and Activities sponsors outreach programs that provide students with volunteer opportunities. The Class of 2014 Service Project is one way for Hofstra students to serve their community throughout their collegiate careers. Beginning August 28, 2010 and continuing though spring 2014, students will choose a specific issue to address and take action each semester to make a difference in the community.
Hofstra Celebrates the Holidays
In December, student organizations come together to build the annual holiday village to share the holiday spirit with children from the local community. In 2009, the theme was “Celebrating the Holidays Around the World.” In less than a week, students build a beautiful village and create one-of-a-kind buildings with interactive displays. Children from the community participate in artsand-crafts, enjoy refreshments, visit “Sinterklaas,” and receive gifts.
Building a Bridge Between Service and Learning Conference: Friday, March 11, 2011
The mission of this conference is to build a bridge between service and learning that begins with serving the community, and ends with reflection and a celebration of the educational process that reinforces the value of making a difference. (More information about registration and workshop proposals will be posted on the service Web site in October 2010.) • Conference highlights include a keynote speaker, dynamic workshops to expose students to various service opportunities and assist them in building practical leadership skills, an action center to engage students in service activities, an exhibition fair, and a hands-on project to help local families in need. • Hofstra University and high school advisers can network with representatives from a variety of not-for-profit agencies. Student attendees can gain knowledge in public relations and outreach activities, as well as develop effective communication skills and strategies to promote activism. • High school and Hofstra University students are encouraged to attend individually or in small teams of up to 10; groups should be composed of students, faculty, service club officers, advisers and/or administrators.
