i. Representatives from Panhellenic Council and IFC Rose and Ray
1. Presentation Link
2. Panhel President Rose: We are here to talk to you about importance of Greek Life on campus. We house all of the college sororities, managing leadership, recruitment, and guidelines.
3. IFC President Ray: We manage recruitment and promote scholarship, leadership, and brotherhood. We have multicultural fraternities and sororities as well as professional fraternities and sororities.
4. Rose: Our core values are scholarship, leadership, service, and belonging. We focus on community service projects, philanthropy, and support systems.
5. Ray: We do a lot of events such a shake-a-rake, dance marathon. We also boost campus spirit. All orgs also have philanthropies.
6. Rose: Funding goes to local communities such as schools. We place an emphasis on a sense of belonging, lifelong friendships, and community.
7. Ray: SGA represents the student body, and greek life also represents a large portion of that student body. We aim to implement the Greek Life community into the rest of the Hofstra community
8. Rose: Working together with SGA can create larger events that are more inclusive and representative. With your support, events can go beyond the greek community and we can give low-cost or free entry to non-members if we get support from SGA. We want to plan end of semester finals frenzies like other colleges do, this gives students a stress-free day and takes place during common hour and provides a stress-free environment.
9. Ray: It would be a nice place to calm down and we would focus on growing community. Greek week is a five day celebration where greek organizations host a variety of events supporting places like local food pantries. It promotes creativity and school spirit.
10. Rose: We want to replace our usual field day by partnering with SGA to host an outdoor field day event benefiting the HeadStrong Foundation. It would be just before Greek Week. The event would be open to all students and Greek organizations could also earn Greek Week points for entering and winning. The event would combine philanthropy, community building, and school spirit. It would encourage us to get involved more with other students on campus. Food and giveaways would attract a broad range of students, and we need some help with marketing and promotion to ensure inclusivity.
11. Ray: Your support would create an open and accessible environment for all Hofstra students to have fun in.
12. Rose: We want to make these collaborations a reality and make these events a signature tradition. These traditions highlight student leadership, community, and pride.
ii. Questions
1. Senator Chacon: Great presentation, coming in as a freshman, I was afraid of Greek Life, now I am not, but how would you promote that it is not as scary as stereotypes?
a. Rose: We are interested in sitting down and talking. We are regular people with Greek letters on. It would damage invisible walls if we emphasized connections.
2. Senator Smook: Was Greek life never SGA funded in its 90 years?
a. Rose: I am not sure when, we are a dues-funded organization, the only funding we receive is small fees
from councils, however it does not do much besides promoting members. Funds are very limited. We had to sit down with the finance chair just to plan small events.
3. Senator Rades: The biggest thing I have heard about Greek Life concerns are the financial and social barriers that keeps most students from being involved, what can SGA do to help wdier community have access if they are not financially able to?
a. Rose: We are lowering dues for transfer and first-gen students. We are hosting an event for first-gen students to emphasize this. I want to see as many people as possible be a part of Greek life, however the budget is tight and causes complications. I want us to break our financial barriers down. In the future I would love to work in different ways of funding.
4. Chair Ahmad: For the discounted dues is that only the first payment or every year? Is there any collab any Greek life or fraternity has had with clubs and have they benediftted?
a. Rose: We are cutting new member dues in half from about $45 to $20 and a lot of our funding goes toward new member events. What we could affect is what they pay toward their council which is $40 at most and that is being discounted there. We can not directly influence the amount dues are for national chapters.
b. Ray: We work with Hofstra dutchmen, sigma cappella, and hofbeats and the organizations seem to have a great time, we have been doing it for over 5 years now. The Delta Gamma Cup always features collab from clubs and other greek organizations for more competitiveness.
c. Rose: Collabs with clubs can be hard because it feels like there is a barrier. Our club sports team always participate in philanthropy events.
5. Senator Green: Hofstra Field Day was discussed in Senate last year, are you willing to do any other philanthropic events in collaboration with SGA for Nassau county?
a. Rose: The barrier that needs to get broken down is making sure every Hofstra student is targeted. We have a lot of organizations that collaborate with greek life and we need to build off this. Shake-a-rake and other opportunities are opportunities to do this and we need to continue to do so.

i. Presented by Senator Rades
1. Senator Rades: This outlines the expectations for senators and cabinet as already stated. This clarifies J-panel’s role in attending senate meetings once a month in addition to mandatory j-panel meetings. This clarifies the wording that this is a separate expectation as presented in the constitution. Senators are expected to have a professional appearance and at a standard level, we should be representing ourselves in a professional, respectful way. This should be official in policy and the way we conduct ourselves at senate influences external perception of us. The only exception is if the VP says otherwise. Senators can miss up to a month;s worth of events without being removed from their position. As written right now, you can have 9 total absences as at 3 absences it is just a meeting, we are here to do a job and we represent 150 students each and they deserve to have a voice. It is still 3 warnings until you are removed but 2 absences should be a warning.
a. Senator Smook moves for a 5 minute unmoderated caucus i. Motion seconded ii. Motion objected 1. For:
a. Senator Smook: this is a very important issue and it needs to be discussed before we vote on it.
b. Chair Orellana: I feel like we can just have an unmod to chat on it and bring up concerns there.
c. Chair Dzaveluri: There is no way we can vote on this without discussing this.
d. Senator Mansour: We all have different opinions that should be discussed.
2. Against:
a. Senator Green: I actually agree on every point, my objection was so we could have a moderated caucus, it is very necessary to discuss this but I want structure.
b. Senator Chacon: I was going to move for a 10 minute moderated caucus and I have a whole page of things I wanted to say so 5 minutes is not enough.
3. For:
a. Senator Pierre: I do not see purpose of having moderated caucus, it is important to say all your main points and saying them correctly rather than just repeating them,
4. Against:
a. Senator Chacon: I think we need a moderated caucus.
b. Senator Green: I did not rescind because I wanted structure, I do not want interruptions and I think we should have dialogue and debate.
iii. Motion fails 13-15
iv. Comptroller Skeldon moves for 10 minute moderated caucus
1. Motion seconded
2. Motion objected
v. Comptroller Skeldon: This would mean 6 absences for removal, 2 for a warning. As a member of Cabinet you could get 4 within 72 hours if you got really sick if there is a mandatory event and absences could be racked up very fast.
vi. Senator Black: I remember last year when looking over attendance policy it felt very restrictive and this feels more arbitrarily so, it is easy to have something going on for 3 weeks. There is no need for this to be restrictive.
vii. Chair Orellana: It is very easy for cabinet to rack up absences, and we are all are a community and want to be here but stuff happens and it can take away from the fun of senate. I understand people can get sick and family certain absences. It is not encouraging community but hindering it.
viii. Senator Chacon: In dress code policy, it says all events and committee meetings require professional dress code, which is overly restrictive. Committees do not follow Robert’s rules and should be informal. I am concerned with events being professional, as each VP may have different expectations year by year. As the VP it is hard to consider what is professional and for commuters this is restrictive as they will have to wear it all day. This can create dread for being in SGA. SGA is supposed to be approachable and bridge students and admin and if we look like admin all the time students will not want to come up to us.
ix. Senator Pierre: This absence policy is taxing on commuters, as a commuter could get there late and have it count to an absence. It does not take into account how many commuters are in SGA.
x. Senator Bruso: I live 3 blocks away and was late to committee because of traffic. Some people may live far away and I want to raise concern about punitiveness of the lowering of absences. It is not friendly to ourselves and we should be approachable and understanding to each other.
xi. Senator Ehrlich: As previous speakers mentioned, things come up. Last week, I had to miss senate for personal reasons that were unexpected. Everyone has family emergencies and many people could not come tonight even though they care.
xii. Senator Green: The dress code policy is hard to understand. Respectful could be very subjective and the language originally stated seems fine. I know you want to allow the J-panel to be at one senate meeting per month and this should have been discussed. The dress code policy is unwarranted, I think the main point is kind of concerning.
1. Senator Rades: This is already in policy and constitution, I am just clarifying wording as it implied regular meetings could count as attending senate meetings, which they cannot as they are separate.
xiii. Senator Pierre motions to extend the moderated caucus by 10 minutes.
1. Motion seconded
2. Motion passed
xiv. Senator Rades: Professional does not mean business, it means we have to present ourselves in a professional way because it is a professional environment and we should be presenting ourselves respectfully and appropriately. The violations are decided by the President and VP.
xv. Chair Jacob: Could you give an example of the dress code policy to clarify what you mean when you say that? I would like to add if it is business casual not everyone has clothing like that and not every one can afford to keep up with that. I had to buy many new clothes last year for situations like this.
1. Senator Rades: I am saying at a base level, not all the time, but when you are representing SGA, you should present yourself in a way that is respectful and reasonable.
xvi. Senator Smook: I agree with previous speakers as the dress code is too strict and over the top, the VP could decide if it is suits or business casual inconsistently. Do you need to be all dressed up to table in the student center? At logistics committees, do we need to dress up? It is more comfortable to wear casual clothes. The absences are also too strict as many can get sick or commute. Today is Yom Kippur so Jewish students had to be absent due to religious observance. Only missing 2 to grt a wazrning is too strict.
xvii. Senator Araba: The dress code as stated, what does business casual mean (shorts, polo shir, jeanst)? It is restrictive to students coming from far and instead of 2 absences, we should stick to 3 as that is good for one warning. As long as you do not come in sweatpants, it is okay.
C. Approval of the Minutes
xviii. Chair Yepez: I agree with previous speakers’ points, we are all students and need to represent students, but 2 absences hinders people from becoming involved and for cabinet there are higher responsibilities and absences can rack up quickly. xix. Secretary Danek: This needs to be smoothed out and considered with Cabinet and E-Board. Professional appearance is implied by being in this organization. SGA requires commitment and dressing a certain way. Being in this position requires that automatically. Having a guest and different Senate meetings have different expectations. The Vice President sends dress code each time. This overly standardizes. Two absences is overly restrictive for Cabinet and absences can add up quickly. It gets to a point where people won’t enjoy being here anymore.
xx. Senator Black: The dress code is way too vague and we already chose to table matters regarding J-Panel attendance in order to better accommodate their needs, so we should not involve J-Panel again before that.
xxi. Senator Mansour: As a commuter coming from Queens, it is not a short commute and it can get hard. People from SGA come from different religious backgrounds and we should not make attendance harder than it is

n. Comptroller Skeldon: Catering guide online is still the 2024-2025 one. The new one is available but isn’t the first search result.
o. Chair Jacob: Lower catering prices.
p. Senator Rades: this may be a unique experience since I am vegetarian, the fake meat alternative comes with nothing on it or something that is definitely meat, I am vegetarian for personal reasons but if people are vegetarian for religious reasons that would be very problematic.
q. Senator Vazquez: They have raw dough at Dutch pizza place and should invest in new ingredients
r. Senator Thani: On two occasions I got regular bread when I ordered gluten-free bread for a burger, especially now that we can cite allergies
s. Senator Black: Is there a way to streamline food reporting so we do not feel the need to walk back?
t. Senator Pierre: In the first couple of weeks, the wait times during common hour as it is unnecessarily long and it is a given that they know, I feel like that is a hindrance to people’s schedules.
u. Senator Aguilar: Going off of Jean, staff more workers aas it can be a 30 minute wain during common hour
v. Chair Ahmad: There are cross-contamination issues as they use the same tongs for chicken tenders and fries, and gluten-free options ran out towards the end of last semester and they did not restock.
w. Senator Pierre: Outside of salads, a lack of healthy food options
x. Senator Smook: Pigs in a blanket on campus?
y. Senator Mansour: A lot more macro-friendly meals with lower calories.

ff. Senator Kurtz: The french toast sticks at HOFUSA are now considered a dessert item rather than breakfast.
gg. Senator Ehrlich: More napkin/utensil dispensers in Stu.
hh. Senator Pierre: Another early morning option like now the Nethies does. Could we have a pop-up shop?
ii. Senator Thani: The only place to get anything for the gym is the dutch treats if you do not use a vending machine, how can we get something that uses dining dollars in the fitness center for gatorade/protein bar.
