Francis Ford Coppola, one of Hofstra’s distinguished alumni, was a controversial choice to direct Paramount’s film The Godfather, based on Mario Puzo’s 1969 blockbuster novel. Winner of the Oscar for Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo), it was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1990, being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The American Film Institute ranks the movie the second greatest film in American cinema behind Citizen Kane. Join us as we revisit the film, its two sequels, attendant controversies, and its enduring hold on the public’s imagination.
