Dean Rabbany Fall Welcome—A Time of Renewed Energy and Purpose

Welcome to the start of the 2025-2026 academic year at the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science. It’s a time of renewed energy and purpose, and I am especially pleased to extend a warm welcome to the Class of 2029. We are thrilled to have you join our vibrant and growing community.

This year, we once again anticipate a record number of first-year students. Their arrival is a testament to the strength of our programs and the reputation we have built for excellence in engineering and computer science programs.

The summer months were productive and filled with exciting developments. We received confirmation from the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET that our BS in computer science program has been successfully reaccredited, an important milestone that reflects our continued commitment to quality and relevance in our curriculum.

Another major initiative gaining momentum is the implementation of the DeMatteis School Strategic Plan. This plan outlines our vision for enhancing student success and developing distinctive programs that position our school as a leader in interdisciplinary education. As a core pillar of Hofstra University, the DeMatteis School is proud of its track record in undergraduate education and is eager to expand its reach in the years ahead.

This semester also marks the launch of two new undergraduate degree programs: BS in data science and machine learning and BS in human factors and usability studies. These programs reflect our commitment to innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and student-centered learning. We are also pleased to welcome two new full-time faculty members: Dr. Gozde Ustuner (department of engineering) and Dr. Xiangmin Shen (department of computer science). Their expertise and dedication to teaching will enrich our academic community and inspire our students.

As always, I invite our alumni and friends to stay connected. We will be hosting a series of virtual sessions throughout the academic year featuring faculty experts discussing topics of broad interest from emerging technologies to societal impact. I encourage you to participate in these sessions and to visit us at Hofstra whenever you can. Your continued engagement strengthens our community and helps us shape the future of engineering and applied science.
