The Frank G. Zarb School of Business has been accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) — the global standard-setting body for business education — for more than 50 years. Since 2003, Hofstra’s accounting program has earned supplemental AACSB accreditation. The Zarb School is one of only five business schools in the New York metropolitan area with both credentials.

BBA 100 BUSINESS AND SOCIETY: FOUNDATIONS FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Whether you are undecided or have selected a business major, BBA 100 will help you become familiar with the role that business serves in society within a dynamic global environment. The first-year course is designed to expose students to concepts across business disciplines, including presentations by successful entrepreneurs, innovators, and industry leaders.

Living and Learning

The Zarb House is an exciting opportunity for first-year students to live and study with other students who are aspiring toward careers in business. Residents participate in guest lectures, benefit from exclusive tutorial services, and attend field trips.

The Dean’s Business Scholars Program is a unique opportunity for high-achieving Zarb undergraduate students. As part of the program, student s participate in specialized Graduate Career Services workshops, community engagement projects, and Executive Speaker Series events, and collaborate with Executives in Residence and industry partners.

Organizations and Enterprises

The Zarb School offers more than two dozen undergraduate and graduate student organizations spanning business disciplines and special interests. Hofstra SheEOs focuses on advancing women in business, while members of Hofstra’s chapter of Business Professionals of America (BPA) attend networking events and conferences throughout the country.

The Zarb experience also offers exclusively student-run enterprises such as The Zarb Store, a retail space with Zarb-branded merchandise for sale, and Unispan Records, a Hofstra-based record label that operates as an independent music industry entity.

Center for International Financial Services and Markets

Founded in 1996, the Center for International Financial Services and Markets (CIFSM) hosts conferences and symposia throughout the year. The Center’s activities are inclusive and interdisciplinary in nature, encouraging students, faculty, and alumni across departments to participate.

CIFSM experts include faculty who lead and publish studies in the fields of international financial services and markets. The Center covers topics such as blockchain applications in business, compliance, fintech, globalization, sustainable investing, and the U.S. government securities market.

The Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The mission of the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship is to foster a community that encourages superior learning and teaching, impactful research, and the development of business ventures.

Core enterprises include the Hofstra Venture Challenge and Unispan Records. Through these initiatives, entrepreneurs participate in boot camps, workshops, and mentoring sessions, all facilitated by seasoned entrepreneurs.

The Institute is home to the Scott Skodnek Business Development Center, a designated Entrepreneurship Assistance Center program partially funded by New York Empire State Development, offering support to diverse entrepreneurs in the community through digital marketing workshops, financial management, and certifications.

Speaker Series, and Corporate Visits

Every semester, Zarb students have the opportunity to network and learn from business leaders across all industries. Visits take place either on campus or at organizations based on Long Island and in New York City, including trips to BNY, NFL Headquarters, and the New York Stock Exchange.

Ascend Long Island

Established in 2019, Ascend Long Island is a community-focused effort to recruit, train, mentor, and provide capital to cohorts of diverse entrepreneurs through the tested 3M model: management, markets, and money.

Training for a New Generation

The Cybersecurity Innovation and Research Center at the Zarb School is one of the only academic “war room” facilities in the New York metropolitan area with a cyber range — an immersive, virtual experience that replicates the high-pressure environment of a cyberattack. It allows students to work through issues in real-time, from detection and response to repair and recovery.

In addition to preparing Zarb students, the Center:

• Collaborates with industry, government, and other academic institutions to promote cybersecurity research projects.

• Serves as an educational resource for the New York metropolitan region by providing workshops for K-12 students and professionals.

• Generates a pipeline to fill the growing demand for a well-educated and prepared cybersecurity workforce across all industries.

Cybersecurit y Innovation and Research Center

The Cybersecurity Innovation and Research Center, a $1.35 million facility spanning 1,050 square feet, is equipped with cutting-edge technology and simulation software to create hyperrealistic cyberattack scenarios

It features 36 computers, a separate server room, and status boards that students use to manage cybersecurity operations and share information.

The Center is a joint project of Hofstra’s Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Zarb School of Business.

Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room

The Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business is one of the largest academic trading rooms in the nation, with 34 Bloomberg professional terminals.

In this state-of-the-art facility, outfitted with the latest technology used by leading financial institutions, students learn how to analyze financial and economic data, apply analytical methods, conduct interactive trading simulations, and develop financial models to gain knowledge about corporate finance, investments, risk management, quantitative finance, and trading.

From specialized courses to research to competitions, students are encouraged to practice and apply new skills to work that make a difference.

Berliner Brodlieb Family Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF)

Launched in 2016, the Berliner Brodlieb Family SMIF provides a unique experiential learning opportunity to manage an investment pool of real money, with students serving as portfolio managers and analysts.

Student Managed Sustainability Fund

The Student Managed Sustainability Fund (SMSF), established in 2022, is an opportunity for students to manage actual money and make investment decisions that integrate environmental, social, and governmental considerations into their overall assessment of stock recommendations.

The Leo A. Guthart Hall for Innovation and Discovery is a state-of-the-art, technology-focused facility featuring spaces for innovative individual and collaborative work.

Behavioral Research in Business Lab

The Zarb School’s 1,556-square-foot Behavioral Research in Business (BRB) Lab allows faculty and students to conduct sophisticated, multidisciplinary behavioral research.

The BRB Lab’s features include:

• Two Lab Rooms with 22 stations to conduct behavioral research studies. Each room is equipped with PCs containing screen-capture and eye-tracking technology, and a camera to record the participant seated at the station. The rooms also contain separate lighting and temperature controls.

• An Observation Room situated in the middle of two labs features one-way glass windows to allow researchers to see activity in the rooms. Several computers in this space control equipment in the two labs and include a two-way communication system to speak with participants, among other technology.

• Three Interview Rooms used for one-on-one and smallgroup meetings, discussions, or interviews. The rooms are equipped with PTZ cameras to record proceedings. Cameras can be controlled from the Observation Room.

In the Lab, students gain real-world experience through projects with partners like Madison Square Garden and Google-sponsored nonprofit competitions, while they collaborate with faculty on advanced research.

Core Skills Lab

The Zarb School of Business Core Skills Lab offers nearly 800 square feet of space dedicated to refining and enhancing learners’ core skills, including communication, teamwork, initiative, adaptability, reasoning, and emotional intelligence.

The main workshop features flex furniture and a Zoompresentation component with a 20-person capacity, flanked by an independent workspace containing eight computer workstations with privacy screens and noise-canceling headphones that enable users to hone skills through selfpaced content.

The facility also boasts a dedicated Virtual Reality room, including software and hearing/ visual technology, that allows users to engage in a wide array of simulated environments to practice and enhance evolving core skills.

The Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s home is the 4,811-square-foot ideaHUb incubator, located in Leo A. Guthart Hall, which serves as a collaborative workspace for students, mentors, and startup companies. The ideaHUb runs a virtual and in-person New York State Certified Business Incubator.

The ideaHUb offers services that include mentorship on business milestones, connections to student interns and academic programs, reimbursement for professional services on a cost-share basis, and benefits to eligible companies through the Long Island Innovation Hot Spot.

The physical space contains a high-tech makerspace. Equipment includes Formlabs, Ultimakers, Stratasys Mojo, 3D scanners, Full Spectrum Laser cutter, HTC Vive, Phantom 3 drone, Squink, milling machine, Arduinos, Raspberry Pis, vinyl cutter, laminator, photo booth, and a fashion area.

Where Learning and Community Connect

• Commerce Plaza is a simulated business community where fifth grade students combine economics lessons learned in the classroom with “actual” on-the-job experience, including acting as researchers. Hofstra University at Commerce Plaza includes an Admission, Student Accounts, Financial Aid, and Marketing/ Communications office.

• The Zarb Summer Business Experience is a weeklong college immersion program for high school students interested in studies and careers in business. Students learn how to work with technology in Zarb facilities through various workshops led by faculty across all business disciplines.

• The Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program (LEIP) brings together Hofstra’s Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and local Hempstead High School to offer 11th and 12th grade students the opportunity to take a first-year business course and earn 3 college credits.

• Money & Me is a program designed to teach financial literacy to elementary school students. Facilitated by the Zarb School and Hofstra’s School of Education, in partnership with local banks, the program allows Hofstra students to give back to the surrounding community by conducting classes in personal money management while reinforcing important life skills.

• Technology, Engineering, Coding, and Science Skills (TECCS) Academy offers 20-plus K-12 courses in STEM and hands-on learning in the Cybersecurity Lab at Zarb. Funded by the Voya Foundation, it has expanded to serve over 1,600 students in the past five years, many from underrepresented backgrounds.

International Entrepreneurship and Business Consulting Course

Challenge yourself in a new environment as you meet people from different cultures while developing lifelong friendships and learning from diverse perspectives. As an undergraduate or graduate student of any major or program, you will learn about global entrepreneurship in the classroom and then travel during spring or summer break with classmates to work with local entrepreneurs. Past cohorts have visited Ireland, Israel, South Africa, and South Korea.

Global Practicum

Whether you are enrolled in Zarb’s Executive MBA or Online MBA program, you will enhance your graduate education through our Global Practicum. This entails travel to an international destination while learning about business on a global scale.

Dr. Janet A. Lenaghan, Dean

Zarb School alumna Janet Lenaghan became the first woman dean of the school in 2019. Under her leadership, the Zarb School of Business has earned top rankings for its growing portfolio of undergraduate and graduate programs.
