The Museum was awarded the 2019 Engaging Communities Award presented by the Museum Association of New York (MANY) for the Art Travelers through Time program.

The Museum was one of four finalists in the Arts & Culture category at the 7th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards, recognizing the region’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations. Among the 178 applicants, the Art Travelers through Time program was one of 20 finalists in five award categories.

MORE ABOUT ARTIFACTS

Students from Ms. Nicotra’s class at Jennie E. Hewitt Elementary School in Rockville Centre sent the Museum “I Wonder” posters for each of the artifacts. Members of our Museum staff provided responses to some of the questions asked.

Where does Hofstra store the Equestrian?

“The Equestrian is stored in the Museum’s Collection Storage Room. It is a large room that is climate-controlled and filled with shelves, racks, screens, and drawers all designed to hold works of art. Like all of our artifacts and works of art, the Equestrian lives in a very specific location within the Storage Room, and he is returned there every night so we always easily find him!”

Does Marishi-ten still bring up the sun?

“A long time ago, people did not understand the rising and setting of the sun and moon. They believed in myths or told stories to help them understand. People living in Japan at the time believed that the sun and moon were protected by a God named Marishi-ten, the Defender of Light. Since then, modern day technology has provided us with evidence that the earth rotates around the sun, causing observable patterns like night and day.

Why does the Gelede Mask have seashells?

“The Gelede Mask is from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, where cowrie shells were once used as a form of money. The shells were also used as decoration, to show that an item was very valuable!”

Why did Hofstra pick Bwoom to be in the Museum?

“African artifacts have been part of the Museum’s collection since 1966! Long Island collectors of African art, Josephine and Sol Levitt, donated 26 works of art in 1996, including the Kuba Mask (Bwoom). The collection contains 318 African works of art.

Weather Forecast for the Equestrian Location: China It is said to have been very warm in China during the Sui/Tang Dynasty, the time period when the Equestrian was created.

Researchers suggest that the early Tang dynasty warm period may have been a regional phenomenon in China! Today the climate in China varies from region to region since the country is massive! In the northeast the summers are hot and dry and the winters are freezing cold.

The north and central regions have frequent bouts of rain along with hot summers and cold winters

Weather forecast for Marishi-Ten Location: Japan The city of Kyoto was the capital of Japan when this artifact was made.

Kyoto’s climate is warm and temperate. There is a lot of rainfall throughout the year. Even the driest month still has a lot of rainfall. Kyoto is one of the coldest regions in Japan with an average daily high temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

The cold months are November to March. The warmer temperatures are in the months of June to September.

Weather forecast for the Kuba Helmet Mask Location: Democratic Republic of Congo The Democratic Republic of the Congo has a tropical climate with heavy rain and high temperatures and humidity. In the northern part of the country the dry season is from November through March and a rainy season from April through October.

It is the opposite in the southern part of the country.

THE GREAT ART CAPER Our outdoor sculpture collection serves as the setting for a mystery that children and their adult companions can figure out together as they learn more about our works of art.

LET’S EXPLORE BACKPACKS Children create their own works of art while they explore, with their adult companion, our outdoor sculptures located throughout the Hofstra University campus. Each backpack has a map outlining one of four different paths focusing on different themes.

Pick up all materials at the Emily Lowe Gallery during open hours year-round until 3 p.m. Backpacks need to be returned to the gallery by 4 p.m.

ARTful Adventures Second Saturday of each month September through December • 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.* All sessions meet at the Emily Lowe Gallery behind Emily Lowe Hall, South Campus *Check-in: 11:15 a.m.

Fall Sessions: September 14, October 12, November 9, and December 14 For children ages 5-10 with an adult companion.

Look, listen, and create together! Bring your child to the Museum to look at and discuss art and then engage in a hands-on art project. Led by Museum educators, each month’s ARTful Adventure focuses on a specific theme to explore.

Limited to 15 participating children per session.

Advance Registration is required.

Strollers are not permitted.

Fee: $10 per child per session when pre-registered ($12 day of the program). Adults free.
