Circle

What a joy it was to feel the energy and spirit of our Circle 1000 community, together for the first time since the pandemic, at our April 29 Founders’ Celebration Brunch! It was my privilege and honor to chair our 35th anniversary event at the Balboa Bay Resort, and to see so many faces, both familiar and new, supporting Hoag Family Cancer Institute. I especially want to recognize the many vibrant young members and supporters who joined us for the first time. This next generation of Circle 1000 supporters will carry on the legacy of our founder Sandy Sewell, who passed away the evening before our brunch. While I felt deep sorrow announcing Sandy’s passing, seeing the crowd of women and men of all ages reassured me that Sandy leaves Circle 1000 in good hands.

I also felt inspired by our poignant, engaging keynote speaker, John Vallely, who shared his personal stories of perseverance after losing his daughter to cancer and surviving cancer himself. The former UCLA basketball player related coach John Wooden’s famous “Pyramid of Success” to the challenges and opportunities we all face in life.

Through your generosity, we continued our significant contribution this year to Hoag Family Cancer Institute, raising a total of $1,136,800. That brings our 35-year cumulative total to more than $23 million. This year’s funds will be allocated to the following programs and initiatives:

• $400,000: Oncology Physician Leader Recruitment

• $350,000: Early Detection and Molecular Interceptor Program

• $200,000: Arden Flamson Oncology Nurse Navigator Program

• $106,800: Melanoma & Skin Cancer Program

• $50,000: Sandy Sewell Oncology Nursing Endowment

• $30,000: Hoag's Annual Oncology Nursing Conference

Marianne Larkin will join me as co-chair of the Circle 1000 Founders’ Committee next year. I am thrilled to have Marianne as co-chair, which will help ensure that Circle 1000 continues in the able hands of Marianne, her peers, and into the future.

We are excited to announce that next year's Circle 1000 Founders' Celebration Brunch will be on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at the Balboa Bay Resort.

Sandy, our founder, lived another 45 years after her successful cancer treatment, and she used that time to pay it forward. Circle 1000 is just one part of her legacy, and it is ours to preserve. May we all follow Sandy’s legacy to pay it forward to help Hoag, our community, and the world. Peace be with you.

With gratitude, Lin Auer

IIn Memoriam

Sandy Sewell

Founder, Circle 1000 (April 19, 1935–April 28, 2022)

The joy at Circle 1000’s first in-person Founders’ Celebration Brunch since the pandemic was tempered by sorrow when Chair Lin Auer announced the passing of Sandy Sewell the night before. Yet Sandy surely knew the group she founded in 1987 would carry on without her. Circle 1000’s more than $23 million cumulatively raised in 35 years is a testament to Sandy’s contagious philanthropic spirit.

“Sandy was a force of nature,” said Vicki Booth, a second-generation Circle 1000 member, whose mother, Ginny Ueberroth, was among the first to join. “When Sandy was passionate about something, she made you passionate also.”

“Sandy was a wonderful mentor,” said Karen Linden, who joined Circle 1000 in its 16th year, despite initially

feeling uncomfortable fundraising. “Sandy took me under her wing and made me more courageous.”

Surviving breast cancer ignited Sandy’s passion to support Hoag, where she received care. At her 10-year survival mark in 1987, Sandy and her husband Richard donated $500,000 to the new cancer center, then the largest gift to date. Sandy brought the broader community into the fold by founding Circle 1000. Original member Fran Applegate remembers Sandy’s refreshing fundraising idea.

“A major donation would be your total contribution,” Fran recalled. “You wouldn’t have to go to an event and be asked, ‘Oh, wouldn’t you like to bid on this piece of jewelry,’ or ‘Would you go out and get some things for a silent auction.’ ” Members simply asked friends to donate and were thanked at the annual brunch.

After exceeding its first-year goal of $100,000 by $60,000, the Circle kept growing, largely due to Sandy’s knack for what Vicki called “friendraising.”

“It brought people together, it helped a lot of people who were having problems and it was important to the hospital,” said Ginny.

Ginny, Sandy and Arden Flamson also served on the campaign committee for the Sue and Bill Gross Women’s Pavilion. Under the trio’s leadership, the campaign raised $75 million in two years, exceeding its goal by 50% three years early.

Beyond fundraising, Sandy influenced Hoag Family Cancer Institute's caring nature. For example, Circle 1000 helps fund Hoag’s Nurse Navigators Program,

7 CIRCLE OF SUPPORT

providing both clinical and emotional support to patients throughout their cancer journeys. “We have an amazing opportunity as navigators to help our patients at probably the worst time in their life,” said Traci Swenson, BSN, RN, OCN, a breast cancer clinical nurse navigator. “We’re so fortunate to have the support from our community.”

“I see Sandy’s impact daily in our advanced technology, the top professionals we can recruit, the continuing education of our nurses and innovative clinical trials and treatments we provide,” said Burton Eisenberg, MD, Grace E. Hoag Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair, Hoag Family Cancer Institute.

“Sandy built a community that has enhanced the quality of care at Hoag,” said Flynn A. Andrizzi, PhD, president of the Hoag Hospital Foundation. “I hope her legacy will continue to inspire the spirit of giving.”

Just hours after her passing, the Founders’ Celebration Brunch continued Sandy’s legacy of “friendraising” for the next generation. “We had 30-40 women there who were all in their thirties,” Karen said, calling them “the heir apparent” for Circle 1000.

Sandy is survived by daughter Laurie Sewell Cappello and her partner David Nochimson; son Jeff Sewell and his wife Serena Brinderson; and six grandchildren.

CCircle 1000 Helps Recruit National Experts in Melanoma

The Hoag Family Cancer Institute is driven by the vision of a world without cancer. Thanks to the generous support of Circle 1000, Hoag is working to make that world a reality by recruiting world-class experts who are advancing standards of care across specialties. Most recently, this includes surgical oncologist Thomas Wang, MD, PhD, FACS, and dermatologic oncologist Steven Wang, MD. Together, the pair are leading Hoag’s new Melanoma & Skin Cancer Program, leveraging state-of-the-art technology to partner with community dermatologists and transform how skin cancer care is delivered.

Dr. Thomas Wang, medical director of the program, joined Hoag in early spring after 15 years with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he served as professor of surgery at the UAB School of Medicine and chief of surgical oncology for the Birmingham VA Medical Center. About the launch of the Melanoma & Skin Cancer Program and his time with Hoag thus far, Dr. Wang said, “It’s amazing the support physicians at Hoag receive from the community. With their help, we’re committed to a collaborative approach in providing our patients with the best and most advanced care in the treatment of melanoma. Through expertise in multiple specialties and involvement in cancer research, we hope to one day eliminate all skin cancer deaths.” This hope is borne out by his measures to develop better ways of identifying aggressive disease and avoid over treatment.

Dr. Steven Wang, the program’s director of dermatologic oncology at the Hoag Specialty Clinic, joined Hoag this summer from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New Jersey. There, he served as head of the dermatology section and director of dermatology and dermatologic surgery. With a keen interest in the application of artificial intelligence and nanotechnologies, Dr. Wang plans to utilize the cutting-edge technology of the Vectra WB 360 whole-body imaging system to screen high-risk patients yearly. With 46 cameras that flash spontaneously to capture the entire skin surface, the Vectra maps out all a patient’s moles and lesions in less than one second. Patients may have access to the Vectra in early 2023. “Thanks to Hoag’s generous philanthropic partners, the dermatology team is introducing a wide range of innovative diagnostic modalities and workflows that can fundamentally improve the diagnosis of melanomas and non-melanoma skin cancers at the earliest possible stage,” said Dr. Wang.

With a melanoma rate that exceeds the national average, California dermatologists face the immense challenge of managing surveillance for an increasing number of patients. By combining genetic testing, cutting-edge imaging, and surgical and medical modalities, Dr. Thomas Wang and Dr. Steven Wang, have a solution.

Dr. Burton Eisenberg, Grace E. Hoag Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair, Hoag Family Cancer Institute, said of the duo, “Circle 1000 continues to be instrumental in the recruitment of high-caliber physicians like Drs. Thomas Wang and Steven Wang. With their leadership, the Hoag Family Cancer Institute has made a substantial commitment to greatly enhance clinical and research components of Hoag’s new Melanoma & Skin Cancer Program.”

CCircle 1000 Promotes

Nursing Excellence Through Support of Conference

“Oncology nursing is a highly specialized, complex, fast-moving field,” says Dori Holnagel, vice president at Hoag Family Cancer Institute (HFCI). Recognizing that continuing education is essential in such a rapidly-changing specialty, HFCI has hosted a twoday conference, “Embracing Excellence in Oncology Nursing Practice,” for 17 years and counting. The March 11-12, 2022 conference was initially planned in-person, but surging COVID-19 infection rates led to a shift online. Hoag’s adept conference planning team quickly pivoted, securing 250 registered attendees from 17 different states.

“The Circle 1000 gift to the conference covers roughly 30% of the program expenses, which allows Hoag nurses to attend this completely complimentary,” said Andrea Pastori, senior specialist, conference planning for Hoag.

“Enhancing patient care is foremost in the minds of attendees,” said Stacy Wilton, program manager for medical education and clinical research at Hoag. “Years ago, people just needed to get their credit hours,” she

said, referring to continuing education requirements. “Today, we see them going above and beyond what they need and really seeking out information.”

Positive feedback from participants such as Rick Martin, senior vice president, clinical operations and chief nursing officer at Hoag, assures Wilton and her team they are accomplishing that goal. “It was outstanding with exceptional presenters!” Martin said in an email. From the latest advances in treatment of solid tumors and hematologic malignancies, to addressing nurses’ own compassion fatigue, the conference covered a broad range of relevant topics, many of which were requested by past attendees.

Wilton also noted that Circle 1000 helped fund access to an advanced online platform called BroadcastMed. The platform allowed fluid question and answer sessions, plus downloading of PowerPoints, handouts and recorded presentations into users’ accounts for future reference.

“The virtual format that was used was the best I have ever experienced and it made you feel like you were in the room,” Martin said. “It also gave attendees from several other states the ability to attend which helps to get Hoag’s name out across the country!”

By generously supporting the conference, Circle 1000 helps facilitate that boost to Hoag’s reputation, while educating nurses about critical advances in oncology care that ultimately benefits their patients.

“ The Circle 1000 gift to the conference covers roughly 30% of the program expenses, which allows Hoag nurses to attend this completely complimentary.”
