year ago, pre-season No. 1 Malden Catholic (16-6-3) closed on a 13-game winning streak and captured a third consecutive 1A championship that seemed unlikely when the Lancers sat a game under .500 in midJanuary. There should be no such struggles this winter. Seven veteran forwards return to a highoctane group powered by UNH commit Ara Nazarian (26-20-46), a junior, and UMassLowell bound Tyler Sifferlen (14-19-33), a senior. Meanwhile, senior Nick Rolli and juniors John McLean and Will Lawrence all return on the back line. If this club remains focused and committed, the seniors should exit with a fourth 1A crown as a class. (Continued On Page 5)

elcome to our final preview issue of the season, the annual Massachusetts HS preview. A new wrinkle in the upcoming season will be the movement of several high profile programs, both from Division 2 to Division 1 (including two-time D2 champ Wilmington), and from Division 3 to Division 2. It will be interesting come tournament time to see how these teams fare in their new alignments. Wilmington may not be able to defend its Division II titles, but both champions at the Super 8 and Division I levels - Malden Catholic and Burlington - will look to continue their winning ways. The Lancers seek their fourth consecutive Super 8 title, beginning the season ranked #1, while the Red Devils of Burlington will look for their third straight D1 crown, or, a spot in the Super 8 field. The Division II race is now wide open, with a host of teams that remained at that level focused on getting to the Boston Garden in March. The same goes in Division III, where teams like Medfield, Medway and Marblehead have moved on. On the girls side, three-time defending D2 state champ Duxbury has opted up to Division I, further crowding that field of talented clubs. Falmouth now heads the Girls Division II field.

BC High A Threat: Winchester Leads Public Group (Continued From Page 3)

No. 2 Springfield Cathedral (16-3-5) is driven by junior Holy Cross commit Peter Crinella (22-15-37) and sophomore John Leonard (15-8-23), who’s headed to UMass. Three-year starting senior goalie John Liquori stabilizes the back end and the Panthers unveiled an impressive crop of freshmen at The Garrett Reagan Summit. Eighteen players return for No. 3 Catholic Memorial (13-8-2), which returned to 1A play last season after an absence of several seasons and reached the semifinals. When HOF coach Bill Hanson has that much experience at his disposal, powerhouse teams usually emerge. Captains Aaron Clancy and Kevin Bletzer lead the way. No. 4 Austin Prep (16-2-6) advanced to its first 1A title game last winter. With numerous veterans returning in key roles, two straight is not out of the question. Junior goalie Elijah Harris (1.74 gaa), BU-bound junior captain and forward Bobo Carpenter (17-15-32) and senior captain and defenseman Andrew Cross are the top returnees. To the surprise of no one, No. 5 B.C. High (15-5-3) is the third Catholic Conference club to crack the Top 5. The Eagles return 18 forwards and defensemen with a year or more of varsity experience. Junior forward Pat Kramer (15-13-28) and highly recruited sophomore defenseman Ryan Shea are players to pay attention to. No. 6 Winchester (16-6-3) of the Middlesex League’s Liberty Division holds the distinction as the top public school in the poll. The Sachems return their top five scorers from last year’s Division 1 finalist, including league MVP Nolan Redler (53 points) and senior Brendan Greene (25 goals). No. 7 Central Catholic (14-7-3) is the consensus pick among league coaches to claim the Merrimack Valley/Dual County Large crown. The Raiders feature senior captain and forward Lloyd Hayes and senior goalie Colin Soucy, among the division’s top players at their respective positions. No. 8 Arlington Catholic (11-7-4) figures to

push for the Catholic Central Large crown. Senior John Richard (1.47 gaa) anchors the Cougars’ defense and there is considerable depth at forward. No. 9 Marshfield (20-7-1) features junior center Pat Shea (11-25-36), a recent UMaine commit, as the leader of a deep forward group. Senior goalie Connor Lemieux takes over fulltime after winning 10 of 12 starts last year. No. 10 Burlington (14-6-5) of the Middlesex League’s Freedom Division has claimed consecutive Division 1 championships. The Red Devils will lean heavily on an experienced corps of defensemen. No. 11 Archbishop Williams (12-5-3) gives the Catholic Central Large three poll representatives. The Bishops are essentially intact after earning a 1A play-in game last year. No. 12 Reading (16-3-5) of the Middlesex Liberty should be stout on defense, led by junior defenseman Mike Seibold and senior goalie Ian Lapham. Don’t sleep on No. 13 Melrose (12-8-4) of the Middlesex Freedom. All but four players return for coach Vin Mirasolo, who got things back on track in one season.

HNIB News Goes Digital In January: www.HNIBnews.com

No. 14 Braintree (17-5-1) projects as the top team out of the Bay State’s Carey Division. Coach Dave Fasano has 10 three- and four-year varsity regulars. No. 15 Xaverian (9-8-5) is the fourth Catholic Conference poll entry. Senior Tony Marini and junior Tim Sweeney combined for 18 goals and 59 points last year. No. 16 Milton (9-8-6) returns 18 players poised to make a move in the Bay State Herget. No. 17 Duxbury (14-4-5) has 15 players back as it seeks a third straight Patriot League crown. No. 18 Framingham (14-8-1) graduated only four and will push for Bay State Carey supremacy. No. 19 Hingham (16-9-2), the division’s lone Independent, will lean heavily on its veteran defense. No. 20 Waltham (13-9-2) projects as the top challenger to Central Catholic in the MVC/DCL 1. Worth Noting: Five Division 2 schools have joined Division 1 this year, including two-time defending State Champion Wilmington of the Middlesex Freedom. Perennial contenders Newburyport (Cape Ann League) and Franklin (Hockomock League) as well as Triton (CAL) and Mansfield (Hockomock) have also bumped up.

Arlington Catholic Has High Expectations This Year ARLINGTON CATHOLIC (11-7-4) Dan Shine begins his 36th season on the Cougars’ bench with high expectations for this club as it competes in what projects to be a four-way battle for supremacy in one of the division’s most competitive leagues. Senior John Richard (1.47 gaa) returns in goal, looking to build off a strong finish last season. Seniors Jon-Luke Dee and Brian Goggin return to lead the defense and will be joined by juniors Jack Rogers and Danny Needham in the back. A deep forward group includes senior Aaron Cook, juniors Ryan Spagnoli, Ryan Smith (14 points), Jake Ryan, Ryan Tierney (15 points), Jason Smith and Justin DeMarco, and sophomores Bernie McGovern and Andrew Somerville.

With Talent In All Areas, Austin Prep A Threat AUSTIN PREP (16-2-6) One season removed from the Division 1A championship game, the Cougars again loom as the top cats in the league. Coach Lou Finocchario returns veterans in key roles all over the ice. Chief among them are stellar junior goalie Elijah Harris, owner of a microscopic 1.74 gaa; junior captains and top forwards Bobo Carpenter (17-15-32) and Cam Russo (11-11-22); and senior captain and defenseman Andrew Cross (16 points). Sophomore forwards Eric MacAdams (8-12-20) and Jake McKenelley (12-4-16) and junior

Ryan McDonough (11 points) add to the returning firepower. Sophomore Jay Layton, senior Brendan Leach, and juniors Kevin Kiley and Matt Morgan round out a deep defense.

Return To Post-Season A Goal For Spartans ST. MARY'S (8-12-2) The Spartans missed the postseason for the first time in 18 years last season. Long-time coach Mark Lee expects this team will be hungry with a good mix of veterans and new players. The Spartans may have the best goaltending tandem in Division 1. The incumbent is junior Nick Holt (2.27 gaa) of Salem. Senior Bailey MacBurnie (2.43 gaa), who led St. Mary’s to the 1A tournament as a sophomore, returns after a year at prep school. Hard-working and hard-hitting senior captain Jordan Manthorne (8-9-17) is the top forward and is joined by junior Jon Powers (8-816) and highly-regarded freshmen Eric Pedro and Dante Maribito.

Senior captain Chris Price and senior Ryan McManus are the top pair on the blue line.

New Coach Lupo Returns To His Alma Mater MATIGNON (8-10-3) New coach and former player Dan Lupo takes the reins at his alma mater and hopes to guide the Warriors back to post-season prominence. A veteran senior group will be counted on for leadership. Senior captain and four-year varsity defenseman Brian Raimo leads the list of returning players. Junior John Andrew is the top returning goalscorer and junior Michael McPherson led the team in points. Seniors Tommy Thompson and JT Nichols and junior Boston Petrie add to the experience at forward. New sophomore Ben Parker is getting a long look at goalie while new sophomores John and Joe LaPiana could have an impact at forward.

Williams Has Unfinished Business ARCHBISHOP WILLIAMS (12-5-3) The Bishops enter this season with the majority of last year’s roster intact and the goal of completing unfinished business after losing a 1A play-in game and exiting early in the Division 1 South sectional. Senior forwards Mike Sorenti (34 points), Mike Jessman (28 points), Nick Menzel (21 points) and Ryan Dunn (19 points) return as the core of the top two lines. Senior Mike Davis (19 points) and junior Eric Keefe complete those units. Juniors Matt Clifford (11 points) and Colin Boyle (9 points) return as the top defensemen. There is an open competition for the goaltending job.

Fenwick Wants To Compete BISHOP FENWICK (4-14-2) The Crusaders have struggled since moving up a division prior to the 2011-2012 season. Coach Dan Lynch is hopeful his club is more competitive this winter, challenging in the league and for a post-season spot. Top returnees include senior Nick Finan (9-9-18) and Brian Corcoran, both forwards. Junior transfer Tim Sullivan, sophomore transfers Jake and Sam Mitchell and new freshman Jimmy Moore could have an impact. Patience will be crucial as 16 underclassmen, including six freshmen, were on the varsity roster a year ago.

Massachusetts Division i hockey ST. JOHN’S PREP (19-4-1) The Eagles have enjoyed a strong post-season run in the 1A Tournament the past several years. However, 16 players from last year’s semifinalist were lost to graduation and transfers leaving a young team that will need to learn to compete on the fly. Coach Kris Hanson does return a quality core group to lead the way. Senior captain Jimmy Currier (9-11-20) showed a knack for delivering big goals in key situations a year ago. Seniors Evan Leclerc and Ean Mendeszoon share the captain’s duties. Senior Anthony Selvitella gets the full-time call in goal.

Big Year For Catholic Memorial CATHOLIC MEMORIAL (13-8-2) The Knights returned to the 1A Tournament last year after a prolonged absence, reaching the semifinal round. Veteran coach Bill Hanson welcomes back 18 players from that team, although no roster spots are guaranteed and all players have to make their way through the tryout process. Junior captain Aaron Clancy (12-10-22) is the heir apparent as the leader of the CM offense. Fellow captain and solid two-way senior Kevin Bletzer joins Clancy on the forward line. Sixfoot, three-inch senior defenseman Will Conroy (5-7-12) looks to build off a solid summer with HNIB. Hanson indicated that goaltending and defense are the Knights’ strength. He anticipates any one of the league’s five teams will be capable of claiming the title.

MALDEN CATHOLIC (16-6-3) The three-time defending 1A champions closed last season on a 13-game unbeaten streak. Many of the key contributors to that team return for coach John McLean, whose primary task will be identifying a goaltender ready to meet the challenge posed by one of the state’s most ambitious schedules. The offense is loaded with seven veteran forwards returning. UNH-bound Junior Ara Nazarian (26-20-46) and senior Tyler Sifferlin (14-19-33) lead the way. Seniors Patrick Wrenn (6-814)and Brian Cameron, juniors Austin Goldstein (6-11-17) and Jake Witkowski, and sophomore Matt Filipe (15 points) contributed another 23 goals. Senior Nick Rolli and juniors John McLean and Will Lawrence all return on the back line, tasked with keeping the dangerous areas clean in front of an untested keeper.

Massachusetts Division i hockey B.C. HIGH (15-5-3) The Eagles return 11 forwards and seven defensemen who have gained ample experience over the past couple of seasons. Coach John Flaherty’s club will be prepared to negotiate the typically rugged league in which each team is capable of prevailing on any night. Junior forward Pat Kramer (1513-28) led the Eagles in goals last year and ranked second in points and is being recruited by numerous D1 schools. Four-year senior Steve DeForge (8-7-15), senior Chris LaLiberte (12 points), and juniors Jake Lemaknski (7 goals), Tim Larocque and Connor Noonan provide veteran balance. Seniors Sam Topham (4-16-20) and Trevor Davis are the anchors of a seasoned corps of defensemen. Sophomore Ryan Shea (4-14-18) is already being heavily recruited and is looking to build on a stellar freshman campaign. Sophomore Billy Roche completes the group. Xaverian returns quality personnel and balance in all phases, though a few players were delayed in their preparation by the football team’s Super Bowl appearance. Senior Tony Marini (8-27-35) and junior Tim Sweeney (10-14-24), both from Hanover, work well together at forward. Junior Jake Farrell (9-5-14) and sophomore Joe Beniers (10 points) add to the offensive attack. Junior Drew Perry gets the call in goal. Seniors David Troiano (30 points), Danny Marx (20 points) and Dan Durgin (16 points) provide coach Matt Spang with a formidable bunch up front. Small Core Of Veterans Key For Rockets READING (16-3-5) Graduation removed a huge chunk of talent from last year’s Division 1A quarterfinal team that lost just once during the regular season. Coach Mark Doherty will rely heavily on a small core group of veterans to lead the way as skilled but untested underclassmen acclimate themselves to varsity play. Senior Mike Thomson is the most skilled of the returning forwards. Senior captain Rob Diloreto is a

sound two-way player and senior Jake Barbera brings a physical element to the attack. Juniors Sean Verrier and Mike Keogh will take on expanded roles. Doherty is high on the ability of junior Mike Seibold, the Rockets’ top returning defenseman. Senior Ian Lapham takes over in goal after two years as Evan Morelli’s understudy. Overall depth will be culled from the 70 candidates who tried out for the team.

Arlington Wants Continued Improvement ARLINGTON (9-7-6) The Spy Ponders took significant strides last season and coach John Messuri looks to continue the task of returning the program to its former stature while again qualifying for post-season play. A half dozen seniors lead the way, including two-year captain and forward Seth Coiley. Lucas Hanley, Matt Shea, Josh Talanian and Andrew Cunningham all return up front while Mike Greco is back to lead the defense. A number of other underclassmen will be called on to fill out expanded roles.

Junior captain Brendan Shaw provides a rugged defensive presence while senior captain and forward Thomas Wood (6-10-16) plays a hard two-way game. WAKEFIELD (10-6-4) Coach Derek Edgerly is excited about a young club he anticipates will be very good in the second half of the season. The Warriors return a fair number of forwards, including seniors Sam Carr, Tyler Gibbons and Mike Fennelly, junior Bryan Noyes, and freshman Antony Funicella. Juniors Jack Brown and Domenic Bruno and sophomore Dylan Melanson return with experience on defense. Senior Mike Melanson and sophomore Ben Yandell will compete for time in goal.

WILMINGTON (21-3-2) The Wildcats make the step up to Division 1 after claiming consecutive Division 2 State titles. Graduation took a large number of key players but veteran coach Steve Scanlon has an ace in the hole. That would be three-year starting senior goalie Drew Foley, who recorded nine shutouts to go along with a .940 save percentage and 1.37 gaa last year. Senior

back-up Brodie Curtis would start on many teams. Senior Jim Davey leads the defense and junior Mike Marcinkowski moves up from the JVs. Seniors Luke Foley, Cody McGowan and Austin O’Neal are the most experience forwards. Juniors John Galasso, Joe Castellano and Steve DeFuria and sophomore Bill Falter will all compete for time.

BURLINGTON (14-6-5) The Red Devils became the first public school team to claim back-toback State titles in more than a quarter century last winter. This year’s edition will have a decidedly defensive feel as graduation stripped away the bulk of the offense. The defense features senior captain Adam Crowley (6-14-20) and includes senior Jake DeSantis, junior Mike Bibbey, and sophomores Shane O’Halloran (9 points) and Josh Boulos. Senior Mike Guleserian gets his shot in goal after two seasons as the primary back-up to two-time State Champion keeper Derek DeCastro. Veteran Braintree Squad Should Provide Dividends BRAINTREE (17-5-1) Not many teams have 10 third- and fourth-year varsity players. The Wamps do and that stamps coach Dave Fasano’s squad as the league favorite, should have them ready for a rugged non-league slate, and puts them in the Division 1A Tournament conversation. Start at forward where four-year regular and league all-star Nick Ward (8-23-31) leads the way. Seniors Brian Gallagher (15-9-23) and Dylan Casserly (10 points) and junior Chris Googins (8 points) are in their third year while senior Gino LaRossa (8-11-19) looks to follow up a productive junior year. Senior Kyle Leslie completes a deep group. The defense is similarly stacked in front of returning keepers Nick Anson (sr.) and David McDonough (so.). Senior captain and all-star Joe Harrington (5-5-10) and senior James Flaherty (4-4-8) are four-year regulars, senior Kevin Howard and junior Sean Casey are back for their third year, and junior John Elworthy is a second-year regular.

Flyers Could Fly High FRAMINGHAM (14-8-0) Having graduated only four seniors, veteran coach Paul Spear welcomes back an essentially intact club. Expect the Flyers to push Braintree for the top spot and surpass last year’s first-round tournament exit. Reigning Bay State MVP Al Lynch, a senior, was brilliant a year ago with a 1.88 goals against average. Seniors Kyle Caso and Cullen Smith are the leaders on a back line that returns six. Seniors Cory Gorovitz (17-11-28) and Kevin Parker (6-6-12) and junior Ryder Lessing (7-6-13) rank as

the top returning forwards. Freshmen Scott Swennes and Pat Lavin figure to contribute.

Cory Gorovitz Framingham

Tigers Will Be Competitive NEWTON NORTH (6-13-1) Though traditionally short on numbers, veteran coach Tom Ryan likes his returning core group and anticipates the Tigers will be competitive in the very difficult Carey Division. Seniors Anthony Calabro and Corey Chin return to anchor the back line. Senior Alex Joyce is the top forward while freshmen Patrick Mullowney and Curtis Judd should step right in and contribute. Pre-season will determine who nails down the goaltending job.

Weymouth Will Pose a Challenge WEYMOUTH (11-11-0) The Wildcats made significant strides last season. Coach Marty King welcomes back a large group of players who picked up a post-season win and looks for his squad to push the projected league powers each and every night. A core group of senior forwards drove the offense as juniors and will look to take it to the next level this winter. They include Pat Coleman (77-14), Joe Flanagan (6-5-11), Brian Gosnell (5-6-11) and Steve Ganley (76-13). Senior veteran Kurt Gutting returns in goal to anchor a defense that saw five underclassmen log time a year ago.

Milton Has Potential MILTON (9-8-6) If the Wildcats are to make a move toward league supremacy, this would be the year. Eighteen returnees saw game action for coach Paul Noonan last season, including seven double-digit scorers. There is abundant depth at forward, paced by returning scoring leaders Lloyd Hill (jr., 14-14-28), Connor Richard (sr., 22 points), Connor Shea (sr., 10-10-20), Owen Bligh (jr., 14 points) and Colin McCabe (10 points). Juniors Jason Turner and Kevin Murphy contribute quality depth. Senior captains Dan Matisoff (6-12-18) and Pat Coffey are the leaders of the defense in front of returning senior keeper Aidan Killeen. Seniors Brian Nee (10 points), Matt Fahey and Seadna Scanlong complete a veteran group on the back line.

Bertoni Takes Over As New Needham Coach NEEDHAM (4-17-1) Only three experienced seniors return as new coach Mike Bertoni takes over a team looking to rebound from a rare down season. He cites team discipline, conditioning and the ability to execute as the keys to negotiating a rugged schedule while taking on the challenge of returning to the tournament. Senior captain Matt McKenna will lead a young corps of defensemen. Bertoni is looking for big things from top returning forwards Danny Jacobs, a junior, and Connor Forbes, a sophomore.

Juniors Mike McHale and Eben Quinn and sophomore Aidan Murray will compete for time in goal.

Bay State Herget Redhawks Capable of Challenging NATICK (12-10-2) Despite the graduation of a sizable senior group, coach Karl Infanger expects the Redhawks “will make some noise and compete with any team this season” in what looks to be a wide open division. There is depth at forward where senior Derek Butler (14-26-40) has posted consecutive 40-point seasons and is developing into one of the premier scorers in Division 1. Solid senior captain Jack Murphy (4-6-10) and emerging sophomore Matt Murphy add to the attack. Junior captain Trevor Kaplan can play either forward or defense but seems most likely to take up residence on a blue line left thin by graduation. The goaltender will be settled upon during pre-season.

Young Walpole Ready To Go WALPOLE (9-6-5) The Rebels will be young but coach Ron Dowd hopes to build off their modest success of last season with post-season qualification as an attainable goal. Senior captains Sean Donnolly and Tom McNamara will be counted on for consistent production at forward while senior captain Patrick Baker and sophomore Tim Farrow will provide stability on defense. Dowd anticipates newcomers Liam McCabe, Charlie Harrington, Jay Blume and Kevin Ivatts will contribute in some capacity.

Brookline Boasts Experience BROOKLINE (4-18-0) The Warriors return one of their more experienced teams in some time and have been re-classified for Division 2 for the post-season. Coach Stephen Trundle said the presence of senior goalie Jake Paul provides his club the chance to compete each night. Returning forwards include seniors David Birch, Solomon Foster and Dan McLaughlin; juniors Nolan Crowley and Jacob Steinfeld; and sophomores Jesse Leung and Josh Russo. Juniors CJ Greenstein and Declan Finnegan and sophomore Alex Chin return with experience on the back line.

DEDHAM (6-16-0) The Marauders will have a changing of the guard, as Joe Huff begins his first year behind the bench, taking over for longtime coach Paul Podolski. Huff expects his club to give its best day in and day out and is looking forward to his new position. Dedham does return its top scorer from last winter in senior John Fitzgerald (25 pts). Also back is first liner Ronnie Pucci (20 pts), a junior. Seniors Andrew Collins and Mike Sampson, and junior Timmy Buttlar all return with varsity experience. Two transfer sophomores - Brian Bilifer and Frankie Stapleton - could pay immediate dividends. The quarterback of the Dedham defensive unit will be sophomore Tommy McCarthy. Three returning senior goalies P.J. Morse, Brian Mosca and Jake Wood - will battle for time between the pipes.

Chelmsford Will Be Young CHELMSFORD (14-4-4) The Lions will be young due to the graduation of 11 seniors – including both goaltenders – but coach Mike McGrath also expects his club to battle every night. Seniors Danny Ferri (11-19-30), Mike DeDonato (13-5-18) and Jesse Lye (7-10-17) will trigger the offense. Sophomore Derek Adamson (10 points), senior Jack Olson and junior Jason Arnaud add to the mix up front. ANDOVER (10-9-3) The Golden Warriors will gain experience as they go as the graduation of 12 seniors stripped away two-thirds of last year’s offensive production as well as two-time all-star goaltender Colby Gilbert. Coach Mike Ciarletta will build his squad around a trio of returning league all-stars – junior wing Mark Campbell, junior wing Will Sauerbrunn and senior defenseman Jack Wilkie – as well as senior center and captain Conor O’Reilly. Goaltending remains undecided and depth will come from new freshmen and those moving up from the JVs.

Acton-Boxboro Looks To Build On Strong Finish ACTON-BOXBORO (5-12-3) The Colonials are looking to build on a strong finish from last season. Coach Bob Lavin said senior Brian Reilly is a goalie to watch this year. Senior captain Ben Barton has a nose for the net and is the top forward. The forward group will be bolstered by the return of senior Christian Boisvert, who was injured in pre-season a year ago. Senior captain Hunter Arnold and creative junior captain Shamus Fenton lead a group of seasoned defensemen. Senior Cam Giles and junior Cam Harer also return with experience.

Hawks Ready To Be Involved

WESTFORD ACADEMY (4-14-3) Veteran coach Bob Carpenter is hopeful the Grey Ghosts finish in the upper echelon of the league and return to the post-season this winter. There is ample experience at forward led by the senior trio of captains Cam MacDonald, Jay Drapeau and Ryan Hesseltine. Junior Andrew Gounaris and sophomore Anthony Gulliever are also back. Seniors Peter Hargrave and Evan Beatty form the top tandem of defensemen protecting sophomore goalie Kyle Martin.

WALTHAM (13-9-2) The Hawks returned to prominence last season after a brief downturn and project as a primary challenger to Central Catholic this winter. Coach John Maguire welcomes back a core group of seasoned performers. There is depth at forward where seniors Ben MacEwen, Kevin Snow, Joe Marmion and Ivan Polipas and junior Brendan Hopkins all return. Junior Brandon Hamner moves up from the JVs. Returning all-star Sean Kelley ranks as one of the league’s premier defensemen. Junior James Cicconi will log regular time while pre-season competition will determine who gets the nod in goal.

Mastrullo expects Kevin Faria, a strong power forward, and Ed Stokes, a high-energy type and relentless forechecker, to provide leadership as captains. Dynamic sophomore Callahan Johnson is a player to watch. Nick Fantasia possesses a big shot while Josh DeChristoforo adds quickness to the mix. Old COlOny league Dartmouth Will Again Be A Factor In Division III DARTMOUTH (9-9-4) Mike Cappello’s Indians went down in the second round of the tourney with a 4-0 loss to Silver Lake last winter. They finished 9-9-4. Brendan Sullivan is the key returnee. The netminder posted last winter a 2.88 GAA and is a two-time all-star. Joseph Correia scored 39 points last year and will be asked to play defense and forward. Ryan Gaydou is a hard-hitting senior defenseman and captain, and Nick Cardoso (18 points), Cody Silva, Garrett Silvia (15), Owen Sylvia (14), Jack Arruda, Tyler Barton and Cory Arruda are also key returnees. Two solid goalies will back up Sullivan -- Nick Chaves and Tyler Martin. “Our outlook is very similar to years past,” Cappello said. “We return some proven goal scorers and are strong in the goaltending position, but are very thin on numbers. Managing ice time, getting better every day on the defensive end and staying healthy will be the keys to success for us.”

Whalers Hope To Be Better

Experienced Brockton  Could Be A Factor In The South Sectional

NEW BEDFORD (8-12-0) The Whalers drop to Division 2 this season and have a clear goal to qualify for the South Sectional while pushing Brockton for the league title. Senior center Quinn Indio (38-65-103 career) and senior wing Justin Ferreira (36-25-61 career) form a powerful one-two punch at forward. Talented senior Josh Shoesmith (5-10-15) leads the defense. Others returning with experience are Niko Safioleas, Doug Pimentel, Luke Galarza, Sean Dias, Andrew Rapoza, Nick Bergantim and Matt St. John. Newcomers Ian Dumas, Cannondale Leduc, Jakob Moniz and Tyler Almeida will compete for time.

BROCKTON (8-13-0) The Boxers’ chase for a fifth consecutive league championship rests with 18 returning juniors and sophomores that logged extensive time a year ago against eight Bay State League opponents as well as Hingham in the post-season. It’s little wonder coach Chris Cunningham expects his club to be a factor in the South. The defense features senior captain Alex Radcliffe and sophomore Ian Peterson, son of former Brockton standout and Chicago Blackhawks’ draft choice Erik Peterson. Junior Owen Morgan and sophomores Joe Lopes and Derek Routhier also return in front of stellar incumbent junior goalie Franco Massaro. Sophomore Korey Paull (8-8-16) and junior Steven Ulich lead eight returning forwards. Juniors Justin Allen and Brennan MacCauley and sophomores Zack Dinopolous Dan Heffernan, Jake Senter and Zack MacIntosh join them.

CatholiC West Mead Takes Over As Head Coach ST JOHN'S (S) (7-11-4) New coach Mike Mead takes over for the retired Brian Murphy without any pre-conceived notions but one clear goal for the Pioneers – to play every game one shift at a time. Top returnees are offensively gifted senior defenseman Bryan Nelson, who tallied 10 goals and 23 point a year ago; and solid senior goalie Mario Pizzeri. Otherwise, roster spots are wide open and will be filled based on pre-season tryouts.

Guardians Look To Make Strides ST. PETER-MARIAN (4-13-3) The Guardians will be looking to make strides this season under coach Brian Allain, who will rely on a small core group of returnees. The bulk of the team was to be determined via tryouts. Sophomore Conor Leonard (10 points) and senior C.J. Boilard are the most experienced of the returning forwards. The defense will be bolstered by the return of senior Daniel Blute, who missed 12 games a year ago due to injury.

Mike Baldassare St. Peter Marian

Senior Mike Baldassare also returns on the blue line.

Outlook Better For Durfee DURFEE (0-20-0) There is only one way for the Hilltoppers to go and coach Kevin Robinson said the outlook is better than a year ago. Though still young, experience was gained a year ago that should prove beneficial this season. Robinson will look to his three captains to provide all-around leadership – senior defenseman J.P. Bonanca, senior defenseman Zach Pereira, and senior forward Jordan Raposo. Freshman forward David Piela could provide an immediate boost on offense.

Defense Bolsters Hingham Attack HINGHAM (16-9-2) The Harbormen will lean on their defense this winter, especially in the early going as young forwards gain experience. Coach Tony Messina welcomes back five defensemen who are equally proficient at both ends of the ice. Senior captain and four-year

standout John Carlson (7-18-25) leads the way and is joined by fellow senior captain Gerard Colpoys. Sophomore Luke McInnis (2-17-19) and juniors Michael Saleski and Nico Droster complete that unit. Senior captain Alex Bonn takes over as the regular goalie.

Bates Returns To Alma Mater MEDFORD (9-11-0) Medford fell just short of tournament qualification a year ago. Former Mustangs’ standout and NHL player Shawn Bates takes over at his alma mater and says he is looking for his club “to be competitive every night and [to] play in the State Tournament.” Senior goalie A.J. Ansaldi and hard-working returning defensemen Will Brennan, Brian Whooley and Max Porrazzo provide stability in the back end. Brendan Hussey, Paul Zizzo and Nick

Ulandey are the top returnees at forward.

Jonathan Botelho and Dan Matthews. Juniors Anthony Vallessio, Chris Carvalho, Austin Silvestri, Jonathan Lentini and sophomore Ryan Mercier all return as well. On defense, senior captain Cam Alves will be the backbone. Sophomores Devon Alves, James Macrokanis and Corey McGlashing are in the rotation. Two seniors – Tim Megnia and Taylor Sutherland – will handle the goaltending chores.

Rebuilding Continues At Cambridge CAMBRIDGE (5-13-0) The rebuilding program continues at Cambridge, where coach Chris Watson is hopeful his club can play well enough this year to qualify for the post-season. Three senior forwards will play a major role in any success the Falcons have, as the club returns Domenic Freddura, Jake Heller and Ethan Brazo. A new transfer, senior Nick Short, should have a key role on the blue line.

Coach Alex Naumann welcomes a nice blend of seasoned veterans and promising freshmen. Leading the way is senior captain and center Stephen Faia (1212-24), one of the league’s premier players. Junior center James Liberge (7-9-16) is a proven commodity. Senior captains Chris Griffin and Alex Belluschi add to a veteran group up front. The defense features the returning pair of senior captain Chris Roderick (3-9-12) and junior Bruno Machado. There is an open

Landscape Changes With Several Powers Moving Up Beverly, Tewksbury Head Newly Revamped Division II By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB News

T

o say that the landscape in Massachusetts Division II hockey has changed, would be an understatement as the puck is about to be dropped for the 20132014 season. A new realignment by the MIAA has seen five of the premier Division II programs of the past several years, including Wilmington, winner of the last two Division II state titles, given Division I status, meaning come tournament time those clubs will now vie in Division I. With the move of the Wildcats, as well as Franklin and Mansfield from the Hockomock League, and Newburyport and Triton from the Cape Ann League, it leaves the door open for a handful of remaining teams to battle to see who will be on the Boston Garden ice come March. Those teams will still compete in their respective leagues, but will be seeded in the Division I post-season tournament.

With a solid core returning from a team that lost just one regular season game last winter, HNIB News tabs Beverly (18-2-1) as its pre-season #1 team in Division II. The Panthers have a solid one-two scoring punch in seniors Connor Irving and Graham Doherty, as well as returning starter in goal in junior Tim Biarellli. A driving force will be the sting from a loss in the quarterfinal round of the post-season last winter to rival Danvers. The MVC-Dual's Tewksbury (14-4-1) begins the year at #2. A perennial power, the Redmen will look to keep the championship momentum going (Tewksbury's football team recently won the Super Bowl). Ryan Petti is a topflight scorer, and Kyle Paquette begins his third year as starter in goal. With their Hockomock League rivals having moved up to Division I, #3 Canton (16-4-2) has set its sights on a big season. The Bulldogs will have to develop

some scorers, as they lost a bulk of their offense. Right behind is another of Canton's league rivals, #4 Oliver Ames (17-6-2). The Tigers made a nice run in the D2 South sectional last season and return stellar goaltender Jimmy Tierney. OA will have a new coach, as Mark Homer moves over from King Philip. #5 Winthrop (11-6-5) is capable of making some noise north of Boston. The Vikings have Chris Page back, welcome in new forward John Orlando, and also have all star goalie returning between the pipes in Ray Feeley. A host of skaters return for #6 Lincoln-Sudbury (16-3-3). The Warriors are also under new management, with assistant Tom Pare taking over the head coaching reins. Coming off its best regular season in several years, #7 Martha's Vineyard (16-5-1) could be a team to watch this winter with a good group of returning talent. #8 Danvers (13-7-4) reached the

Division II North sectional final last winter and be sure that the rugged Northeast Conference schedule will have the Falcons ready for the post-season again. A strong senior class will lead the way. Ready for a big step-up is #9 Peabody (7-12-2). The Tanners return 19 players from a team that beat Beverly, Winthrop and Danvers down the stretch last season. #10 Coyle Cassidy (16-5-1) will battle with Martha's Vineyard for supremacy in the Eastern Athletic Conference. The Warriors also have a new head coach, where Darrell Borges moves up from the assistant's position. Could this be the year for #11 North Attleboro (13-7-4)? The Red Rocketeers established themselves as a top program in D2 last winter and have some good scoring punch and a returning starter in goal in Matt Raposo.

Moore Now Falmouth Head Coach FALMOUTH (10-8-5) Paul Moore is the Clippers’ “new” coach in name only, taking over the top job after more than 20 years as an assistant to Buddy Ferreira. An experienced core group of veterans should offset the graduation and of 13 seniors and aid in a smooth transition. Speedy senior Robbie Souza is the top returnee at forward, joined by classmate Zach Barrett and returning sophomore Arlin Moore. Sophomores Nicholas Marston and Sam Walker move up from the JV squad. Senior Jake Beaton is back in goal and will be fronted by a defense that includes veteran junior Andrew Parkinson and returning sophomores Thomas Tobey and Marc Rocheleau. Five freshmen invited to tryouts will provide depth.

Plymouth South Will Work Hard PLYMOUTH SOUTH (10-9-2) The Panthers will be young and will need to work hard to qualify once again for the post-season. Senior Tim Elrick will be a key offensive player for coach Michael McCosh, while Dylan O'Connell is back in goal.

• Hockomock League •

Taunton Will Be Very Young TAUNTON (3-16-2) The Tigers will be very young, with as many as eight freshmen and four eighth-graders on the roster in their search for that elusive first Hockomock League victory. Senior captains Zach Cabral and Kyle Basler will lead Taunton’s offensive attack, supplemented by sophomore Tyler Whalon (15 pts), sophomore Tyler Pietryzk and senior Cody Gallagher. Two freshmen – Mike Volkmann and Nick Terry – will be key on the blue line for coach Kris Metea.

AtlAntic coAst leAgue Marshfield Solid Once Again MARSHFIELD (20-7-1) Expect last year’s Division 1 State runner-up to once again compete for the Atlantic Coast crown as long-time coach Dan Connolly welcomes back a proven group of veterans. Standout junior center Pat Shea (11-25-36) drives the offense, joined up front by seniors Liam Manning (4-14-18), David Cataldo (6-5-11) and Colin MacDonald (10 points), sophomore JoJo Carbone (15 points) and new junior Will Cole. Senior Connor Lemieux won 10 of his 12 starts a year ago and takes over as the full-time goalie. Senior Sam Bartlett leads the defense and new senior Jeff Nagle figures to log plenty of time on the back line.

Youngsters Dictate Dolphins Success DENNIS-YARMOUTH (11-11-0) A total of 13 players are gone from last winter's tournament qualifier, but the Dolphins do return their top two scorers. The final record will depend on who a group of younger players mature. With the return of juniors Adam McClay (25 pts) and junior Tyler Baker (19 pts), coach Neal Donohue will have a solid one-two offensive punch. Other returners include senior Kyle Cavatorta, senior Jake Stafford, junior Tom Slovak, junior Tyler Gleason and sophomore Kevin Reid. he top two-ranked teams to start the Division 3 South boys hockey tourney last season are now gone from Division 3. The upstart team that despite being ranked No. 16 in Division 3 South roared all the way to the finals – where it lost – is also gone from Division 3. The No. 2 ranked team in Division 3 North heading into the postseason last winter – the team that advanced to the semifinals – is no longer competing in Division 3. Medfield and Medway – the teams that filled the top two slots in Division 3 South – have jumped to Division 2 this winter. Along with them goes the South’s Pembroke, the upstart No. 16 team that went all the way to the South finals before losing to Medway, 6-2. And there’s Marblehead, the Division 3 state champion from 2011 that lost to eventual Eastern Mass. champion Swampscott in last year’s North semifinal, 4-1. Those Magicians are a Division 3 team no more, also advancing to Division 2. From our final poll for Division 3 from last winter, that’s four out of the top six teams that moved up a division for the 2013-2014 season. What does this mean? The door is wide open in Division 3. Last season, we had Medway (193-3) at No. 2, Pembroke at No. 3 at 14-8-5, and Marblehead (No. 5, 186-0) and Medfield (No. 6, 18-2-1) all ranked in the top six. Someone has to step in here, we know. As for stepping up, we know the talk of last winter was Swampscott. The upstart Big Blue knocked down some Division 3 giants en route to a meeting with powerhouse Westfield in the Division 3 state finals. Although the Big Blue lost, 4-1, at the TD Garden, we’re keeping them at No. 1 heading into the season until someone proves they’re ready to

take the lead. Swampscott lost its share of talented seniors, but they return sophomore sensation Noah Maercklein, a playoff clutch performer, and sophomore goalie Tristan Bradley. Bedford gets the nod at No. 2. Last season, they showed their worth in the postseason once again by ripping through the North and all the way to the finals, where they fell to Swampscott, 3-2. They have been a North contender year after year, and we don’t see that changing this winter. Speaking of a North contender, Shawsheen clocks in at No. 3. They had a long league winning streak snapped by Rockport, but they are still on target for another great season. They made it to the semis last winter. Holliston is the first South team

to register into the preseason poll at No. 4. We like what they return, and we like even more than that their postseason run from one year ago, which included a trip to the South semis that ended with a 2-0 setback to Medway. Two other Southies – Scituate and Silver Lake – bump into the Nos. 5 and 6 slots, respectively. Each of their postseason runs last year were impressive, with Scituate’s jaunt coming to a close in the semis. Silver Lake suffered the same fate – a defeat in the quarters to Pembroke. Lowell looks strong again and takes No. 7. They were actually the No. 1-seeded postseason team in the North last winter but didn’t win a game in the tourney as they lost to league rival Bedford, 4-3, in a shootout.

Abington was red-hot all year along last season. They dropped their first tourney game, though, with a setback to Holliston. We don’t see how Abington slips greatly here, so we’re putting them at No. 8. The South also steals the next three slots – Blue Hills, Norwell and Middleboro/Hull – at Nos. 9, 10 and 11, respectively. Each of those teams had fine seasons in the South, and though they didn’t make much noise in the postseason, we expect them to do so this winter. Keep in mind, Middleboro was a 15-win team last season before bowing to Scituate in its first tourney game last season. Rockport, at No. 12, is our last North team to crack the top 15 in the preseason. The team had a somewhat disappointing 2012-2013 at 9-9-2. But the Vikings have been resilient for a few years now, and can’t be counted out without giving them a chance to show their stuff.

19 Returning At Wayland Newton South Ready To Go

WAYLAND (9-8-4) Coach Rian Murray’s team ran into a tough Rockport squad in the first round of last winter’s tourney and finished 9-8-4. The team returns pretty much everybody, 19 players in total. It has a good core group of guys coming back including two-time all-conference defenseman junior Peter Orlandella and junior sniper Nick Morgan, who was also an allconference selection last season. Senior captain and two-time allstar Marcus Daisy will continue to lead by example on the backend. Daisy and hard-nosed junior Nick Greenwood will provide a steadying presence on the blue line. Juniors Lucas Bastarache and Scott Carvalho are two dynamic centers who will look to take their games to the next level. Talented sophomore forwards

New players to watch include Tyler Abele, Ryan Barnard, Scott Browne and Chris Mills. “We will battle each and every night, and our goals will never change,” Baker said. “One game at a time, work for a league title and peak at the right time for the tournament.”

Young Rockport Will Challenge ROCKPORT (9-9-2) Derek Papalegis’ Vikings finished 7-0-1 in the league but 9-9-2 overall last winter. Defenseman Jon Ferrante (14 points) returns, along with fellow Rockporters Kyle Nelson (13) and Jake O'Maley (19). Ipswich’s Dane Tolstrup, who had nine points last season, is back. “We will be a youthful team with 12 new freshmen and sophomores,” Papalegis said. “Captains Jon Ferrante and Kyle Nelson will anchor the defensemen, with newcomer Chris DiFluri playing a prominent defensive role as well. I look for Jake O'Maley, Dane Tolstrup and Anthony Lange to provide our scoring punch.”

Northeast, Minuteman In The Hunt MINUTEMAN (1-17-2) Minuteman and coach Ed McDonald have room to improve after last season’s 1-17-2 showing. The Mustangs return Drew Pica, a junior out of Woburn, returns as a top defenseman. “We have 13 freshmen that signed up,” McDonald said. “Hopefully we have some players that can jump right in and play. As always our goal is to make the tournament.” NORTHEAST (8-8-4) The Knights made the state tourney last year and finished 8-8-4 and are back with a bevy of returnees for coach Jeremy Scafidi. They include: Anthony Aresco, Mike Wesley, Nick Lauria, Joe Henry, Steve Czarnota, Shawn Currey, Calvin Taddeo (goalie), Jake Towski and Cam Scalesse.

SOUTHEASTERN REGIONAL (10-10-3) The Hawks, an even 10-10-3 last winter, brings back tri- captains Matt Niklason, a senior goalie who had a 2.51 GAA and 92.5 save percentage; Anthony Canatta, a senior defenseman who provided a 4-16-20 season; and Adam Haigh, who produced 16-8-24. Returning forwards Paul Andrade, David Burns, and Casey McCloud as well as defenseman Michael DeMaesschalck will also be expected to have an increased role for the Hawks this season. Freshmen Peter Costa, Justin Lavoie and Michael Prendergast may make an immediate impact. The Hawks lost five key players to graduation last season. After qualifying for the South sectionals three out of the last four years, the Hawks will need another strong season from goaltender Niklason and strong contributions from some of their younger players to return to the state tournament.

Diman Ready For Big Season DIMAN REGIONAL (14-7-1) Diman Regional, after a solid 14-7-1 season last winter, wants to continue its winning ways this season. The Bengals, coached by Kevin St. Laurent, return Jason Silva, Cam Levesque, Mike Lavoie, Cote Monte, Jacob Ferreira, Zack Cabral, CJ Minkle, Brett Jardin and Jack Ferreira. “We’re looking to win the division and defend the Vocational Championship, win Prenda Cup and make the postseason and win a couple games,” St. Laurent said.

Moran Back Coaching Nantucket NANTUCKET (2-12-6) Nantucket’s new coach, Jack Moran, takes the Whalers into the 20132014 season after the team last season went 2-12-6. The team returns Kyle Muhr, Derrick Marland, Ryan Holdgate, Noah Wing and Noah Davidson. “We’re still rebuilding over the losses of the past two seasons,” Moran said. “We are looking forward to more games in the win column this year. We have a very strong freshman class this year; 14 were added to our roster. Most of these new players are skilled players who are going to grow exponentially over the next four years.”

Tri-County/Millis Returns Core TRI-COUNTY/MILLIS (5-9-3) The Cougars, 5-9-3 last winter, return 12-goal scorer Collin Spillane and goalie David Cawley, who posted a 2.64 GAA. Three defensemen are back -- TJ Dalzell, Kyle Mee and Joe Galligan. “This year will be a positive year. The core of the team is still together,” Tri-County coach Mark Spillane said. “We are looking for the seniors to lead the team with their knowledge and experience of the game.” * More EMass Division III - Page 71

Defending Champ Wachusett A Threat To Repeat Marlboro, Shrewsbury Will Be In The Running By Michael Fornabaio • HNIB News

T

he song was the same last year in Central Massachusetts: Pick a night, and any one of the top teams was in danger of being knocked off. "The coaches all work their tails off," one coach said. You've got to be prepared. Everybody's getting better." Wachusett got better and knocked Hudson off the top spot, winning the Central Mass. Division 3 title. With a lot of players back from that team, including more than a few standouts, the Mountaineers get a very slight nod as the favorite to repeat. Not surprisingly, coaches have split opinions, but Wachusett is at least the team with the title everyone wants. Opinions also differ on No. 2 Marlboro, but it has some talented youngsters to join with a good mix of returning players. No. 3 Shrewsbury is another team with a whole lot of talent returning. The Colonials have the Quinlivans and Dave Belbin back at forward. No. 4 Hudson went into last year as the preseason favorite to win

again. It didn't turn out that way for the Hawks, but the young team still comes with a lot of respect from around the region. No. 5 Groton-Dunstable wasn't slowed much when it stepped up to a Division 3 schedule last year, reaching the Central Mass. final before losing to Wachusett in a shootout. Goalie Jason Robes is among those returning. No. 6 Algonquin has some strong leaders and some good returning players, but it'll have to fit some newcomers into holes. No. 7 Auburn finished last year strongly, graduated half the team, but brings back a few excellent players. No. 8 Westborough has a new coach -- well, a returning coach -in Chet Hallice. It also has some experience in key spots, especially

Shrewsbury Should Be  A Force SHREWSBURY (16-5-1) The Colonials also bring back just about everybody from a fine season, led by senior and returning captain Dave Belbin, the team's leading scorer, along with juniors Dan and Jack Quinlivan, who were right there with him. Senior Derric Dell'Olio will also be a key up front. Seniors Cole Ambach and Cole Vincequere lead the defense for coach Stephen Turnblom.

With Solid Crew Back, Wachusett A Favorite WACHUSETT (17-4-2) Last year's Central Massachusetts Division 3 champion returns almost all of the faces that got the Mountaineers to the top. They'll need some young players to take a step forward, but there's a lot to like. They return senior captain Marc Happy, last year's district player of the year with 55 points. Senior assistant captain Jake Strasser is also back after allowing 2.03 goals a game and posting a .918 save percentage. Other forwards who are back include physical senior Jack Watkins (33 points) and junior assistant captain Connor Bernard (29 points and a penalty killer). They'll need to replace the scoring

and special-teams work provided by the graduated Colin Bennie, who's running cross country at Syracuse. Junior assistant captain Matt Cappucci is a tough defenseman, and Robbie Roche posted 11 points from the blue line last year as a freshman.

Matt Cappucci Wachusett

Good Mix Has Marlboro Excited MARLBORO (13-9-0) The Bulldogs have a good mix of upperclassmen and younger players, and as long as those youngsters progress, coach Mike O'Brien figures his team capable of a playoff spot. Senior right winger Joe Gilchrest is a captain, returning after a 24-point season. He can play in both ends of the ice, as can junior right winger Erik Bastarache, who scored 16 goals and added 10 assists. Senior defenseman Nick Macina is another captain, a solid stay-athome type.

forward Matt Tozeski. "I'm looking forward to their leadership," coach Andy McGowan said. The team will need some other players to step up into bigger roles as the season gets going.

Auburn/Millbury Graduates 11 AUBURN/MILLBURY (8-9-4) After a tough start, a strong finish -- unbeaten in nine -- got the Rockets to the playoffs. Then, though, they graduated 11 seniors. Coach Glen Bombard's team does bring back junior goalie Evan Lockwood, along with senior defenseman Steve Cariglio (a co-captain) and junior forward Josh Crombie.

Can Hudson Challenge In CMass? HUDSON (7-9-4) The Hawks were up-and-down out of the gate last year but had some successes around midseason. Coach Mike Nanartowich's team still has some younger players, and Hudson will have to see how they mature and how they handle the season mentally. Speedy senior captains Dan Borella (27 points) and Zack Chartrand (22 points) return on the wings. Senior captain Kyle Sawyer is a big, strong defenseman. Freshman Drew Jackson, a good playmaker with some grit and speed, could have an impact at center.

Holes To Fill For Crusaders GROTON-DUNSTABLE (16-2-4) The Crusaders have some holes to fill after two very successful seasons but have plenty of talent returning, beginning in goal with standout senior Jason Robes. He had a 92% save percentage last year and allowed 1.23 goals a game. Senior captains Justin Cole and

Josh Rabbit lead the way up front with classmate Derek March and juniors Brad Garside and Nate Rabbit. Senior captain Connor Maguire and senior Anthony Resca are two solid returning defensemen. Coach Phil Rowley likes his team's quickness.

Coughlin ConferenCe Littleton Wants To Improve LITTLETON/BROMFIELD (1-17-2) The team will be young but hopes its freshman and sophomore classes add some talent into a mix led by senior captains Greg Lizotte and Corey Tower. Coach Howie Schneider feels he has three good goalies, senior Tommy Angell and sophomores John Seymour and J.J. Stadler. Juniors David Peterson, Joe DeVellis and Ethan Fultz and sophomore Ritchie Planchet will be relied on at forward. Seniors Cam Bush and Brendan Burke lead the defense, but an assortment of newcomers, including junior Fabi Weissenberger and sophomores Matty Banker, Kevin Burke and Nate Dutkewych, should help.

Patriots Should Be Good On Defense NORTH MIDDLESEX (8-9-4) Coach Michael McCarthy expects an excellent defensive team, and thus a team that's competitive on any given night, led by senior captain Ryan Twomey in goal. He'll be the team's backbone. Senior captain P.J. Dupre is an offensive defenseman, and senior captain Danny McNamara is a leader at center

Graduation Hits Worcester Hard WORCESTER/LEICESTER (17-3-2) The co-op graduates five all-state players, including studs Nick Herlihy on defense and Tyler Miller in goal. "I don't care what you have left; you just don't replace those guys," coach Mike Vaughn said. They'll have to give it a try, though, with several seniors coming back off good years, like defenseman Cameron Beischel, like forwards Brian Curley, Brian Winslow and Jordan Eurenius. Juniors Seamus O'Connor, a good scorer, and James Sharry are also expected back up front. Sophomore Tyler Spaulding takes over from Miller in net.

Hopedale Attains Varsity Status HOPEDALE It's a brand-new program, but the roster isn't new to hockey; coach Greg LaBossiere has nine seniors with playing experience. With cohesion as a team, he feels they have the talent to be competitive off the hop.

Coughlin ConfeRenCe Goaltending Key For Nashoba NASHOBA REG. (14-5-3) Everything begins in goal for Nashoba, where senior Devyn Levesque returns after posting a goals-against average under 2 and a save percentage well over .900. The team graduated a lot elsewhere, though, including three defensemen, so coach Steve Kendall will have to figure out how to get some newcomers and younger players into key roles. They have some numbers (over 45 tryouts expected), and they have some experience in spots. Senior defenseman Steve Lengieza returns from a broken wrist, and sophomore Brad Colvin comes back on defense after a freshman

year when he played a lot and scored some big goals. Seniors Nick Tavis and Brandon Hennessy and juniors Kevin Gilchrest, Hunter Boudreau and Jack Charbonneau all played a regular shift last year, too.

Russell ConfeRenCe Defending 3A Champs Rely On Defense GRAFTON/BVT (18-5-1) Some key forwards graduated from last year's Central Massachusetts Div. 3A champions. Coach Brian Lehtinen's team needs to find new scorers, but its defense has experience, with speedy junior Ryan Lorden, with junior James Moran and sophomore Kyle Roy. Jared Vadenais and Taylor Shannon, both seniors, lead the forward corps.

Northbridge Expects Solid Year NORTHBRIDGE/NIPMUC/SUTTON (14-6-2) Coach Greg Ostopowich's team will look to senior captain Mike Ferraro for leadership and offense, joined up front by seniors Dom Chlebovec and Vlad Boehmer with contributions from Sam Luukko. Captain Will Calabro, another senior, leads the defense with juniors Jesse Averka and Tyler Costello. Senior Kirby Gomez is the No. 1 goalie but sophomores Nick Dame and Joe Briggs are good backups.

Tyngsboro Needs To Stay Healthy TYNGSBORO (8-11-1) The team has 16 players and six seniors, and if they stay healthy, coach Paul Feeney is optimistic that they'll be competitive. Senior forwards Kyle Gauthier and Dakota Redding return off good seasons, and senior Sean Engel leads the defense. Two goalies should battle for playing time.

Sean Engel Tyngsboro

Kevin Gilchrest Nashoba Regional

Defense Strong For Lunenburg/Ayer LUNENBURG/AYER (11-7-3) The team expects to be strong defensively, backboned by senior Alec McNamara, a three-year starter in goal. He had a strong season last year, and he has four veteran defensemen ahead of him, including seniors Mike LaManna, Josh DeFazio and Kevin Cowdrey along with junior Nick Martone. Senior Tom Wagner and junior Dan Baldino were top goal scorers last year, and senior Jeff Kerr was solid for coach Eric Short's team. If they stay healthy, that experience and defense could make for a good year, though they lost some firepower up front.

here are Western Massachusetts coaches who don't see Westfield as the team to beat in Western Massachusetts. A lot of other coaches scratch their heads at that. A powerhouse, said the coach of a Berry Division rival. Another coach wondered how he could possibly counter the Bombers' four lines with his two. With plenty of depth and experience, the defending state Division 3 champs get the nod to repeat here. They were unbeaten against Western Mass. competition last year. They defeated East Longmeadow 7-0 in the regional final. The No. 2 Spartans have goalie Matt Gasparini returning, and some top forwards, though they graduated a lot of their depth on defense. No. 3 Longmeadow, the last local team to knock off Westfield (in the 2012 regional final), also has experience in goal, also has some veteran forwards returning, but also will be looking to some young defensemen to step up. No. 4 Agawam, perfect against Division 3A competition last year, gets its chance against Division 3 competition this year; it'll join the regional powers in the Berry. The Brownies have a lot of players back

and are seen as a team to watch. So, too, is No. 5 Minnechaug, which lost some close games last year and has experience in a lot of crucial spots, not least in net. They could take a big step forward.

No. 6 South Hadley is in the same boat as Agawam, though it lost a lot of its depth to graduation and other factors. A perennial in Division 3A in recent years, it has some very strong seniors who've had lots of success, including goalie Devin Hoagland and defensemen Tom Crotty and Ben Kravetz. No. 7 Ludlow had huge wins and tough losses with a young team last year. The Lions will look to those kids to take another step forward. No. 8 West Springfield had a nice season but graduated a whole bunch of players. Without a lot of depth, the Terriers will rely on hard work and some experienced leaders in a tough division. No. 9 Easthampton brings a lot of players back from a good season last year and are seen as one of the favorites in Division 3A. There's experience in a lot of different spots. No. 10 Greenfield is one of several teams in that division in the same boat: They don't have much depth but they play well as a team.

WESTFIELD (19-3-2) The defending state Division 3 champion graduated nine players but is widely seen as the team to beat. Coach C.B. Juniors Sam Evans and Craig Lacey also return, and several newcomers will complement them. Senior Mike Santinello and juniors Connor Sullivan and Chris Sullivan will lead the forwards. Ludlow Has Good Potential LUDLOW (9-11-1) The Lions have some good returning players and picked up senior defenseman Logan Schinabeck, who played the last two seasons for the Springfield Pics. He'll add to a defense that includes senior Marc Miller (14 points last year), sophomore Jake Murphy and freshmen John Arciszewski and Noah Palmer. Nick Dunn returns in goal as a senior to go with sophomore David Modzelewski. Senior Jason Wegiel (seven goals, 13 assists), juniors Tyler Diotalevi (14 goals, 14 assists) and Brad Garete, and sophomores Hunter Schinabeck and Devin Senerchia return at forward. Junior Austin Blair is among the newcomers who'll contribute.

EL Has To Rebuild Lineup EAST LONGMEADOW (10-9-2) After a nice year, the Eagles lost five defensemen and several forwards. Coach Dan Reid's team also faces a tough schedule, with a few Division 1 and 2 teams, including Division 2 champion Wilmington. They do have junior goalie Matt Gasparini back, the team's MVP last year. Senior captain Jack McIntyre returns off a 40-point season; he's a big two-way forward. Ben Wosky returns after leading the team in scoring last year as a freshman.

Longmeadow Will Be Young LONGMEADOW (10-9-2) The Lancers have 18 players, and nine of them will be sophomores. "It's a good sophomore class," coach Jim Joyce said, but they're sophomores nonetheless. There's some strength in the senior class, though, led by senior captains Drew Kelleher and Connor McCarthy, both forwards, and Colin McDermott, a defenseman. Senior Omar Natour brings experience in goal, too. Longmeadow will look for some players to step up as scorers after graduating a lot of their points.

South Hadley Joins Berry SOUTH HADLEY (16-4-3) Moving up to the Berry Division, South Hadley loses its co-op but has some top talent back, led by four-year starter Devin Hoagland. He's a top goaltender who's had postseason success. Also returning are senior defensemen Tom Crotty and Ben Kravetz, cocaptains. They're strong leaders for coach John Houle on a good defense corps, and Kravetz is 6-foot-6 and added muscle over the summer. Nick Watkins and junior Brian Bak will also contribute. The forward corps isn't as deep as it has been in the past, but sophomore Evan Sullivan will lead the way after a strong rookie year. The team will look to seniors Jake Knowles and Joe Whalen to take a step up.

Agawam Moves Up To Berry AGAWAM (19-3-2) The state Division 3A champion moves up to the Berry Division this winter. Coach Rich Feeley's team returns a lot of depth, particularly up front, led by junior Cam Rivest (22 points in the regular season) and senior Billy Wysocki (17). Junior Seamus Curran scored 22 points last year from the blue line, and he'll headline that corps along with seniors Justin Lecuyer and Todd Ruby. Four goalies will compete for time.

Southwick Joins W. Springfield WEST SPRINGFIELD (12-10-0) West Springfield picked up a co-op with Southwick, the first co-op in Gil Doe's 30 years of coaching, he said. "You do what you've got to do," he said. There's a lot of inexperience this year, but Doe promises a hardworking team. They'll be led by junior Drew Rossman, a 6-foot-5 defenseman with a "fantastic attitude," Doe said. Senior Nick Rolandini also returns on defense. The Terriers have senior Brett Parent and smart junior Ryan Coderre back up front.

Minnechaug Should Be Better MINNECHAUG (2-18-0) Coach Greg Palm doesn't feel Minnechaug's record was indicative of its overall game last year; he felt the team was competitive in a lot of games, right up to a 5-3 loss to Springfield Cathedral. Minnechaug's chances to use that experience start in goal, where senior Ross Kiah and junior Steve Bidus split time last year. There's also strength on defense with junior Nick Rivet, a captain, and sophomore Liam Walsh. Senior captain Aron Cyr is a smart forward. Jay Cranston was the team's lasting scorer last year and is back as a senior. • More WMass coverage - Page 71

he consensus heading into the 2013-2014 season is that there is no clear-cut favorite in MIAA Division I girls hockey. Many of the usual suspects are still legitimate threats, as are a couple of up-comers, and, a newcomer to Division I that certainly is not a stranger. How it all shakes out in March is anybody's guess. It should be a fun ride. Although they do not return a starting goaltender, unlike the majority of the top teams, HNIB News will go with Arlington Catholic (17-5-2) as the pre-season #1 in the Mass. Division I girls top ten pre-season poll. Several coaches listed the Cougars as the team to watch, even with goaltender Megan Messuri having transferred to prep school (Northwood). AC has been in the state final the past two seasons (2012 state champion) and should have one of the top scoring duos in juniors Adrieanna Rossini and Jessica Piracini. After winning three straight Division II state titles, Duxbury (20-1-2) will move to D1 for this season. The fact that the Dragons begin the year at #2 is a testament to the success of their program under coach Friend Weiler. They have played most of the top D1 teams in non-league games and more than held their own. Senior goalie Rachel Myette backbones a team that as usual is talented at every position. The same holds true for #3 Acton-Boxboro (15-7-2). The Colonials appear primed for a big run as they return virtually their whole team intact, including a host of scorers, MVC-Dual Large MVP Annie Messuri on defense and Cali Loblundo in goal. A team to watch is #4 Reading (14-5-2). The Rockets boast a boatload of young talent, including All Scholastics Ali O'Leary at forward and Caroline Seibold on defense,

and this could be the year they shoot to the top. First off, Reading will look to wrest away the Middlesex League Liberty title. And that title, as of now belongs to #5 Woburn (19-1-3). The Tanners lost only once last winter, a shootout loss in the semifinals to eventual state champ St. Mary's. Senior Ashley Moran and Emily Lissner will lead a prolific offense for coach Bob MacCurtain, and senior Courtney Davis is a fouryear starter in goal. If the defense jells, Woburn will be in the mix. If defending state champ St. Mary's (19-3-4) is to repeat, it will do so with a more defensive style. The #6 Spartans don't boast a lot of

firepower, but appear strong on the blue line, led by senior Tatiana Doucette, and have a veteran in goal in Lauren Skinnion. Be sure that coach Frank Pagliuca will have his club ready to go. Another team that could have a big season is #7 Austin Prep (128-4). The Cougars gained a lot of confidence with a couple of postseason wins a year ago and should be strong, provided they find an adequate replacement for the graduated Shannon O'Neil in goal. Michaela Boyle and Maddy Ricci are two premier offensive players. Young talent is also the name of the game at #8 Billerica (16-6-1). The Indians reached the quarterfi-

he king has left the building. That's right, Duxbury, winners of the last three MIAA Division II girls hockey titles, has moved on to Division I. It gives a host of teams an added jolt as they head into the season and look to doing big things in March. That certainly is the case for #1 Falmouth (19-2-2). The Clippers have fallen to Duxbury in the past two state title games, and were the only team to beat the Dragons during the regular season last year. With a good crew back from last winter's power, including leading scorer Alexa Scribner and goalie Madison Scavotto, you can bet Falmouth is ready to go. They will have to negotiate a tough Coastal Division of the SEMGHL first, which includes a pair of tilts with Duxbury. In forward Shannon McIsaac, #2 Fontbonne Academy (11-8-2) will have one of the state's premier forwards. Like Falmouth, the Ducks have a lot of talent back and their rugged schedule will have them ready for the post-season. #3 Wellesley (17-2-3) looks to be the class of the Bay State League's Herget Division. Depth never seems to be a problem for the Red Raiders, who will be led up front by Cecily Docktor and on the blue line by Sarah Goss.

Archbishop Williams Hopes To Make A Splash The team that knocked Wellesley out of the playoffs last winter, #4 Westwood (14-7-3), also has high expectations. Despite a few defections to prep school, the Wolverines still possess a trio of senior forwards who should all surpass 100 career points this winter. A team looking to make a big splash this winter is #5 Archbishop Williams (15-7-0). The Bishops have a host of players that can put the puck in the net, as well as one - senior goalie Ashley Dallaire - more than capable of keeping the puck out of the net. #6 Norwood (14-6-2) has to go through the gauntlet that is the Herget Division of the Bay State League,

which will have this club ready for post-season play. Emily Kelly is a veteran forward to rely on. It was quite a debut last winter for #7 Tewksbury/Methuen (12-7-3) in its varsity debut. Not only did the club have a winning record, it advanced all the way to the semifinals. The whole team is back, including big-time scorer Amanda Conway and goalie Taylor Lirakis. #8 Winchester (10-10-1) has a lot of depth up front, and a solid goaltender in Jenna Pantano, which should pay dividends for new head coach Craig Seabury. GREENFIELD/MAHAR/ SMITH ACADEMY (10-11-0) Coach Mike Duclos' team made do with 11 skaters and two goalies last year. This year, it looks like it'll have 11 skaters... and maybe three goalies, junior Noah Foster-Marquis, sophomore Jack Richardson and perhaps a returning player. Seniors Jake Elwell and Jordan Welcome are back; they could be 30-minute-a-game players at forward. Freshmen Tyler Minor and Tyler Townsley and sophomore Alex Malinowski played a lot last year. Senior Cam Woodward and junior Clay Richardson lead the defense, and senior Zach Langlois is expected back from prep school.

EASTHAMPTON (9-5-5) The Eagles have some experience and are hoping to build off last year's solid season, maybe making a run at the Western Mass. Division 3A title. Coach Greg Smith likes the hockey IQ of senior Tim Pfau, a two-way centerman. Senior centerman Zach Lewis is a strong skater, and junior left winger Mike Grise was the team's leading scorer last year. Junior Sean Rose has experience in net, and senior Alex Zadworney provides a physical presence and skill in front of him on defense.

Chicopee Comp Will Compete

AMHERST-PELHAM (4-14-3) Coach Sean Odabashian wasn't sure what he'd have as tryouts got going. He expected only one senior, though, returning centerman Jason Sloat.

MOUNT EVERETT (0-15-0) Aidan Gilligan takes over as coach of the Eagles and is impressed with their energy level. If they keep up that dedication, he thinks they can surprise some teams. He has a group led by senior right winger Kyle Smith, junior centerman Jacob Malicky and senior Aaron Norton, also in the middle. Juniors Peter Lovejoy and David Ibanez headline the defense.

CHICOPEE COMP (4-13-3) After graduating only three players, coach Rob Spear expects a competitive team this year, with a couple of good lines. Seniors Travis Seymour and Monique Rondeau are top forwards along with sophomores Jeremy Lewis and Ethan Cervonyaco. Senior Joe Trombley and junior Colin Robinson are two of what should be a quartet of strong defensemen. Sophomore Brandon Pavoni, junior James Thereault and sophomore Parker Nunes are in net.

Former Assistant Coffin Turner Falls New Coach TURNERS FALLS (10-9-2) Former assistant coach Nate Coffin moves up to the top job this year. He's got a team led by captains Tim Atkins, a junior playmaker with quick hands, and Cody Booksa, a senior who can put the puck in the net. Brandon Bryant played some in goal as a freshman last year. He's big and fast.

Boston City League: East Boston, O’Bryant Ready To Go EAST BOSTON Robert Anthony’s Jets finished with 15 losses out of 19 games last winter. Steven Considine has 85 Points heading into this season, and Brenis Scales, at 45 points, come into this season ready to spark the Jets. Matt Tauro, Kenneth Lockhead and John Lockhead are newcomers looking to contribute. “Some new incoming freshmen would be a fresh start for the Jets Hockey team as we look forward to having a full squad,” Anthony said. O’BRYANT (0-17-0) Defensemen Sean Haugh and Brett Glynn, forward Dominick Gates and goalie Daquan Blevins return to try to bring some victories to the Roxbury school. The team went 0-17 last year.

TACONIC/PITTSFIELD (7-12-0)/ ST. JOSEPH'S (10-7-2) St. Joseph's joins the co-op, leaving what was the Hennessy Division with just three programs (the teams will play as independents this year). Coach Steve Terpak expects to have two solid lines; a third could be young and small but skilled. The team has one senior, centerman Nick Whitaker, a co-captain. Four juniors include goalie Brendan Leary, who should be a big strength. Forwards Harrison Rapant (a cocaptain) and Connor Conant and defenseman Hunter Hoag also bring experience. Freshman Brandon Teasley and sophomore Andy Cella are among those from St. Joseph who'll add depth.

EMass D-3 Independents CAPE COD TECH (11-7-3) Jay Dalterio’s Crusaders finished a solid 11-7-3 but lost in the opening round of the tourney. Senior three-year Caleb Dalterio, a captain, returns as the team’s leader in all categories on and off the ice. He’s a two-time MVP, and threetime team scoring leader. He will be joined by returning first-line mates, senior captain Jim Fay (7-11-18) and junior Ian Fromhein (8-11-19). Sophomore Matt Hinckley and older brother, junior Mike Hinckley, along with junior David Carty look to solidify the backend.
