FOREWORD 前言
Stepping into summer, the Hong Kong International Photo Festival set out to kick off this year’s edition with the exhibitions of two pivotal figures of contemporary photography: Robert Frank: Books and Films, 1947-2019 and Secrets of Steidl Photobooks. Making Multiples — a retrospective of the late maverick Robert Frank and a tribute to Frank’s close collaborator, visionary photobook printer, and publisher Gerhard Steidl. Then Covid-19 engulfed the world. We are now temporarily “distancing” ourselves from the Frank and Steidl exhibitions until next year, and when all this is over, we look forward to welcoming our communities, local and international, to come and experience their seminal works. In Frank’s words, “it’s not possible [to photograph] without feeling empathy, without having a feeling for these moments” (Robert Frank on Life & Art, 2001), and indeed, art does not stand apart from the messy life in which it is created. The Festival continues, with more than 30 Hong Kong photographers who have persevered, committing themselves to deliver diverse exhibitions and events across various districts. The Festival is a chance to re-examine our home communities and to stay connected (at a safe distance) despite the challenges that lie ahead. Ten young image makers have been working alongside forerunners of photography in our Photographer Incubator mentorship programme since September 2019, discussing contemporary photography and developing their artistic practice. Our mentors have offered generous amounts of guidance, inspiration and insights, and the ten emerging artists are pleased to present some of their extensive investigations and experimentations to the public.
P.4
Our Open Call for Satellite Exhibitions has brought a diverse range of 18 individuals and creative collectives who will partner with local businesses and venues – together, they link art with the everyday environment, and at the same time reclaim creative spaces in the city through unconventional presentations. SEEN & UNSEEN – the theme of the 2020 Festival. In this digital age, we have become so accustomed to constant imagery, but do we really see? Are we able to see images as reflections of the political thoughts and aesthetic judgements of their creators? Are we able to tell what is interpreted as “truth” and what is shaped into one? Of all the things we see, which do we notice, and which elude our attention and go unseen? Nurturing a broader and more holistic perspective, critical and free of presuppositions, requires a long process that demands continuous reflection and reference points, sometimes from our predecessors. Robert Frank said, “I always thought, the way you live, that’s already political.” Everyday life in Hong Kong has been exceptionally strenuous, with ongoing protests to achieve democracy and to protect the rule of law, state-sanctioned police brutality, socio-economic hardship, and a pandemic: for over a year, people have endured a “state of exception” as coined by philosopher Giorgio Agamben. Thanks to a group of photographers willing to maintain their reflective and critical spirit, images of those rendered as “bare life” shall exist and be “seen”. Their lenses bear witness to the faces and voices standing against the oppression of the status quo, defending the progress of our civil society. For this work, we are acutely grateful. Thank you, each and every one of you.

I often feel powerless in the darkness. Light, containing energy and vitality, lets me feel the meaning of life again and guides me to move on when I am surrounded by helplessness in dark times. It comes from nature or from my relationships with family, friends, or loved ones. It leads me to create rather than to destroy, to become rather than escape. Long after, colour will have faded, family will have gone, love will have vanished, friendship will have come apart, by the time my breath stops. Yet, there will still be light, shining till eternity. So, I make this record of light and present it in this exhibition. I hope it can provide light for others in the darkness.

(Stories of) Little Beasts is a timeless photography project. Itʼs tailored, private and intimate for you. This is about your inner beast, combining your existing and unidentified characteristics, the ultimate form of realness and dreams. As someone who will finally become history, the only evidence that you leave to the offspring could be about: a witch, a killer, an anarchist, a genderfluid, a past-life drowning memory, or other forms that are not humanlike such as Venus, a black hole, a tree, or a card reading. We must become ourselves, and even create ourselves to refuse to be destroyed, also, to recognize our tribes, cults and histories.

ANTHONY FAN KAR LONG 范家朗
With millions of people participating in multiple protests in 2019, Fan attempted to explore the changes in social conditions of Hong Kong through portraits. On June 9th, one million people protested against the extradition bill. Fan invited children in Victoria Park for a portrait, with the consent of their parents. The candid faces present moments of compelling silence and reflect the pure emotions of an age group often not visible in society in Hong Kong. Half a year later, on December 8th, 800,000 people took to the streets. Fan continued this children’s portrait series and captured the changing atmosphere in Hong Kong.

This is a photographic series reflecting on the influence of family on the artist’s sense of self: Hung was born and raised in a conservative Chinese family that had full control of her early life with a series of ‘rules’ she had to follow. Many things she did seemed unpleasant to her family, as if she broke those rules. This lifestyle made Hung feel a sense of cold violence; she also felt the lack of love. As Hung grew up, she realized that many family rules and values were naturally applied on her daily practices, although she didn’t agree with many of them. For this series, Hung collected and photographed objects that hold family memories. She uses the forms and colours of the objects to refer to the familial pressure she has experienced, with the work also revealing a desire of freeing herself from the family rules.

LOSING FARTHER, LOSING FASTER
Living abroad involves a constant adaptation to the environment, requiring different ways to relate with it, striving to learn a language and, progressively, to assimilate the things one has left or lost on the road. Throughout this process one can reach some kind of truth or become disoriented.
The genesis of this project does not coincide with my arrival in Hong Kong in 2014, but with my move into the neighborhood of Mong Kok, three years later. At that time, my intention was to reconcile a city from which I felt far away, unable to adapt to its fickle nature. I wasn’t yet aware that a large part of its essence is in the ephemeral, in what will eventually disappear, and that those who best capture that spirit are us – foreigners.

The bloodshed of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre left an indelible mark on the hearts of many Chinese, including Hong Kong people who were reconciling the impact of the 1997 handover to China. For 30 years, we have commemorated the massacre every year in Victoria Park. We are once again at a historical turning point in 2019. Despite the tightening political grip of Mainland China and the ongoing violent suppression by the government, millions of residents show remarkable courage and continue to fight for freedom. Sham’s photographs and installations take viewers on an immersive cinematic journey through traces of these historical turning points. The June 4th candles collected from the past 30 years and the tear gas canisters fired by the police during the 2019 protests hold fragments of our struggle against amnesia, against oppression.

The dream of Hong Kong people during the colonial time was said to be to get rich, move up the social ladder and become a member of the middle class. Since the 1990s, such a dream is said to be increasingly more difficult to achieve with Hong Kong becoming a Chinese city. More than 20 years after 1997, new and non-material expectations are added to the old bottle with the emerging younger generation. In my work, I attempt to document and re-present the souls and the spirit of the Hong Kong people amidst the recent worsening social instability and mounting conflicts.

TEMPORAL BOUNDARY
Concerned with documenting post-colonial Hong Kong as it transitions to China’s ‘New Era’, this is an ongoing project, capturing everyday moments of a Hong Kong in flux. Created over five years, since the onset of the Umbrella Movement, this collection of photographs represents Tsang’s unexpected personal mourning of the only place he has considered home. The idea of presenting hundreds of photos in this exhibition is a meditation on excessiveness and displays Tsang’s obsession with capturing the impermanence of a city that is deteriorating. It can also be interpreted as a quandary into how he processes the encroaching absorption of his home city: the disappearing boundary between one country two systems. Influenced by nostalgia and a desire for simplicity, Tsang has chosen to exclusively shoot with film.

I was away in 2014, I felt like an ‘outlander’ when I was home again. This loss became a crack between me and my peers. I tried to piece together the fainting landscape through our memories— a collective apparition image of the time past. I became a flaneur of time, treading on these satellite maps and photographing our Harcourt Road. Yet the fragmented street lamps only reminded me of the widening crack of our time and space. Today, this too should not matter: a more expansive Harcourt Road now resides in all of us. That which was touched by sunlight will only shine again. I ‘solarized’ the photographic prints to project a nocturnal cityscape. In darkness and gleam, I realise a window through which I mend the cracks in our memory, like a totem rooted in the present. In 2019, on the hundredth day of summer, many chance encounters brought us together.

I find meanings in the meaningless when I wander around suburban areas. An individual rarely goes to the highway and looks explicitly for a traffic sign, lamp post, or even a particular turn. I once accidentally walked under a highway that stretched out above my head. The encounter changed my experience towards the space. I wander around overlooked places. Through photography, I intend to reconstruct the place and create a new experience.

The viewing of images is a part of our everyday life. Over the past year of upheavals and furore, a plethora of images has permeated our lives and minds, proliferating and diverging between extremes. How many of them are ‘records’ of objective evidence? Which images are stimuli to the ‘construction’ of ideologies? How should we read, examine and critique images? How should we explore the structural relationships between photography and society, between politics and aesthetics? What is the fundamental value of photography? Continuing the dialogues from the PROVOKE & BEYOND exhibition and the Workshop on Protest Photography of the HKIPF 2018, we seek to respond to what has transpired since June of 2019, and to revisit the relationship between photography and social movements. Before the roundtable discussion, there will be a slide projection of works by more than 10 image makers from different fields and positions. It casts a retrospective look at the most turbulent year in Hong Kong since the handover, and spotlights it as the starting point of the discussion.

PUBLIC PROGRAMME
Since June last year, many photojournalists have been capturing the ‘Be water’ movement in Hong Kong through their lens. Some people say photography is a ‘mirror’ that reflects one’s feelings and views; others say photography is a ‘window’ through which we see the real world. In this light, photography is a dual existence that is at odds with itself. If we look at it in the context of this social movement, does photography create experiences that fulfil or transcend this framework? Beyond windows and mirrors, can photography reflect the world as ripples do?

HKIPF.ORG.HK

UNRULY VISIONS
The Hong Kong International Photo Festival (HKIPF) was launched in 2010. In each edition, the Festival focuses on a different theme, introducing noteworthy photographers, trends, and movements and discussing manifold issues and perspectives. Through a wide range of public programmes, the Festival bridges Hong Kong and international visual practitioners, creating conversations between people and place, past and present, and oneself and the world. In 2018, we began our Satellite Exhibitions Project, calling for visual practitioners working across different forms of expression to create exhibitions that coincide with the main Festival. These exhibitions, held across a range of public venues, connect artists with various communities across Hong Kong. In 2019, we launched the inaugural Photography Is Life Festival, with three days of free events, with a camera fair, photobook showcase, live photo-shoot, workshops with families, artist presentations, concerts and exhibitions, and more. The Festival, both local and international, positions photography as an everyday response to life and aspires to develop platforms for a robust exchange of ideas. In the same year, the Festival initiated the Photographer Incubator Project to foster new creative forces in Hong Kong’s photographic circles by nurturing emerging image makers.
The Hong Kong International Photo Festival is organized by the Hong Kong Photographic Culture Association, founded in 2009 by 19 Hong Kong photographers and awarded the 2011 Hong Kong Arts Development Council Award for Arts Promotion. Since 2014, the Association has been financially supported by the Springboard Grant under the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme and since 2018 the Art Development Matching Grants Scheme of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.
