鄭父鄭北海以其子玷辱門第，怒不可 遏，杖責元和致昏死。鄭父以為其已 死，盛怒之下命僕宗祿拋屍郊野。

During the Tang dynasty, Zheng Yuanhe, scion of a notable family, falls in love with Li Yaxian, a courtesan in the capital city of Chang’an. Soon thereafter they marry. After living in the brothel for a year and spending his entire fortune, Zheng is banished by the brothel owner and Li is moved to an unknown place. Searching throughout Chang’an for Li to no avail, the desolate Zheng is reduced to eking out a living as an itinerant singer. On hearing of Zheng’s affair with a prostitute, his father Zheng Beihai beats him senseless and, incandescent with fury, orders his servant Zong Lu to dispose of the body, presumed dead, in the mountains.

The Tang Princess is married to Guo Ai, son of the honoured general Guo Ziyi. Conscious of her royal blood, the Princess is reluctant to give her husband and in-laws the respect they deserve, even demanding that her husband greet her at home with a kowtow. When the Princess refuses to condescend to visit her father-in-law on his seventieth birthday, festering resentment comes to the surface.
While storming into the palace in a fit of rage, Ai smashes the red lanterns at the entrance. He refuses to kowtow to the pampered Princess and, worse still, slaps her in anger. Shocked by the disrespectful treatment, the Princess tears her royal outfit, a melodramatic act that increases the agony of the situation, before rushing to the Emperor to sob.

唐貞觀元年間，書生張珙往蒲關訪好 友白馬將軍杜確，路經普救寺，偶遇 寄居寺內的已故相國之女崔鶯鶯，一 見愛慕，遂借讀西廂，意圖親近。
是夜，鶯鶯照例到花園焚香，張生情 不自禁隔牆高吟，鶯鶯依韻酬和，張 珙更為傾倒。
正當張珙和鶯鶯兩心相縈時，河橋孫 飛虎兵圍普救寺，強行欲索鶯鶯為 妻。崔夫人無法，只得當眾言明：誰 能退得賊兵，願將愛女相配。張珙挺 身而出，致書杜確。杜確兵到，解了 寺圍。不料崔夫人又筵前毀約，命鶯 鶯稱張珙為兄，使一對有情人竟不能 成眷屬。
鶯鶯瞞過紅娘而又遣使她遞詩給珙， 約張珙在花園相見。張珙跳牆來會， 鶯鶯為禮教所束縛，又恐紅娘覺察， 臨時設計，責斥了張珙幾句而去。事 出意外，張珙因此成病。鶯鶯終究不 忍，在紅娘的支持、鼓勵下決計夜入 西廂，安慰張珙。
不久，崔夫人有所覺察，拷問紅娘。
紅娘據實直說，並責夫人失信負義。
夫人不得已，允把鶯鶯許配張珙。但 又以崔家三代不招白衣女婿為由，逼 張珙立即上京趕考，得中後方許成 婚。鶯鶯和張珙離愁別恨，涕泣叮嚀 而別。
Synopsis
One day during the Tang dynasty, the scholar Zhang Gong sets off to visit his close friend Du Que, dubbed the General on White Horse. Zhang walks past the All Mercy Monastery, where he happens on Cui Yingying, the daughter of the deceased Prime Minister. Infatuated, Zhang sets out to win the maiden’s heart, and stays in the monastery on the pretext of studying in the West Chamber.
That evening, Yingying makes incense offerings in the garden. From the other side of the wall is heard the singing of Zhang, whose affection is reciprocated as Yingying sings along. Love is in the air.
Meanwhile, the bandit “Flying Tiger” Sun lays siege to the temple, threatening to take Yingying as his wife. Lost in despair, Madame Cui pledges to marry her daughter to anyone who can ward off the assailant. Zhang seeks help from Du who arrives in time to drive the bandit away. At the celebration banquet, Madame Cui, to the lovers’ dismay, reneges on her promise by declaring them family. The budding romance is soured. While keeping Red Maid, her maid-companion, in the dark, Yingying asks her to deliver Zhang a poem inviting the scholar to a rendezvous. Zhang climbs over the wall into the garden to meet his love. But, fearing that Red Maid will discover the truth, Yingying rues her bold move and drives Zhang away. The pangs of unrequited love make the young man sick. Yingying cannot conceal her feelings any further and, with Red Maid’s help, steals into the West Chamber in the middle of the night to comfort her estranged lover. Before long, Madame Cui becomes suspicious and interrogates Red Maid. The upright maid discloses all and reprimands her old mistress for her lack of integrity. After much ado Madame Cui agrees to the match on one condition: Zhang must achieve scholastic success to qualify as her son-in-law. Before leaving for the capital to sit the official examinations, Zhang bids Yingying a tearful farewell.

上海越劇院是國內外聞名的國家戲曲
劇院，前身華東越劇實驗劇團和華東 戲曲研究院實驗劇團。1955年3月， 華東戲曲研究院停辦，由該院所屬兩
個越劇團及部份行政與藝術專業人員 組建成上海越劇院，袁雪芬女士出任 第一任院長，現為名譽院長。現任院 長李莉。
劇院繼承革新和發展越劇藝術的理 念，成就顯著。歷年來，創作、改 編、整理的傳統戲、歷史戲和現代 戲近400齣，製作了《梁山伯與祝英 台》、《西廂記》、《紅樓夢》、《祥林 嫂》等代表作，獲獎無數，包括中國 文化部文華表演獎及中國戲劇梅花 獎。劇院先後赴德國、俄羅斯、越 南、新加坡、泰國、日本、法國、美 國、荷蘭等國家演出，贏得盛譽，並 為國際文化交流作出貢獻。
Established in 1955 by Yuan Xuefen, the Shanghai Yueju Opera Theatre was formed when the First Company of the Eastern China Yueju Experimental Troupe (founded in 1951 with the original name as National Eastern China Yueju Experimental Troupe) and the Second Company of the Eastern China Yueju Experimental Troupe (founded in 1954) joined forces. Over the years the troupe has created many new works and adopted and arranged traditional, historical and modern operas. There are nearly 400 works in its repertoire including The Butterfly Lovers, Romance of the West Chamber, A Dream of Red Mansions and Xianglin's Wife. A Dream of Red Mansions has been adopted and arranged for production in Korea by the Korean National Art Theatre.
The troupe has been active both in China and abroad winning numerous awards, including the coveted Plum Blossom Award for Chinese Theatre and the Ministry of Culture award for excellence in performance. The troupe has toured to Germany, Russia, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, France, the US, the Netherlands, furthering cultural exchange.

曾獲第17屆中國戲劇梅花獎、第九屆文華表演獎、第三及第五屆上海白玉蘭戲劇表演藝術主角 獎、第四屆中國金唱片獎。全國中青年演員廣播大獎賽優秀演員獎，寶鋼高雅藝術獎、上海市優 秀青年演員十佳、上海市第七屆十大傑出青年。
Qian Huili is a “First Rank” performer specialising in xiaosheng (young male) roles in the style of Xu School. She is the Associate Director of the Shanghai Yueju Opera Theatre and the Artistic Director of the Red Mansion Troupe. Her repertoire includes A Dream of Red Mansions and The Jade Hairpin. She has won many awards, including the Plum Blossom Award for Chinese Theatre, the Wenhua Performing Arts Award, the Leading Performer Awards at the White Magnolia Award for Theatrical Performing Arts, the Golden Disc Award of China and the Baogang des beaux Arts Award. 錢惠麗
單仰萍 Shan Yangping
國家一級演員，著名王派花旦。上海戲劇家協會會員。主要劇目有《紅樓 夢》、《繡花女傳奇》、《桐花淚》、《紫玉釵》、《西施歸越》、《羅山遺恨》、《孟 麗君》、《碧玉簪》、《曹植與甄洛》及新編現代越劇《舞台姐妹》、《被隔離的春 天》、《家》、《虞美人》等。
榮獲第17屆中國戲劇梅花獎、第九屆文華表演獎、第10屆中國戲劇節優秀表演 獎、第11屆中國人口文化獎最佳演員獎及全國電視戲曲片優秀女演員獎，被評為 全國十佳優秀電視戲曲片最佳演員。

方亞芬 Fang Yafen
國家一級演員，著名袁派花旦。中國戲劇家協會會員，上海市第10屆政協委員。
主要劇目有《紅樓夢》、《西廂記》、《梨香院》、《蓮花女傳奇》、《風月秦淮》、 《紫玉釵》、《啼笑姻緣》、《碧玉簪》、《早春二月》、《木棉紅》、《救風塵》、 《千古情怨》、《玉卿嫂》、《韓非子》等。
第23屆中國戲劇梅花獎榜首、第四屆中日戲劇友誼獎、中國越劇藝術節十佳演 員，第四及第十六屆白玉蘭戲劇表演藝術主角獎，首屆上海優秀青年演員十佳、寶鋼高雅藝術 獎等。
Fang Yafen is a “First Rank” performer specialising in huadan (lead female) roles in the style of Yuan School. Her repertoire includes A Dream of Red Mansions, Romance of the West Chamber and The Jade Hairpin. She has won the Leading Performer Award at the White Magnolia Award for Theatrical Performing Arts, the Performer's Award at the Baoling Cup Awards for Excerpts from Yue Opera and the Baogang des beaux Arts Award.
蔡燕 Cai Yan
張（桂鳳）派傳人，上海戲曲學校畢業。工老生，由越劇表演藝術家張桂鳳傳 授。主要劇目有《珍珠塔》、《碧玉簪》、《紅樓夢》、《虞美人》等。2008年2月 舉辦了「越苑青春風——蔡燕個人越劇專場」。曾獲越女爭鋒越劇青年演員電視 挑戰賽銀獎、上海越劇新秀獎。
Cai Yan graduated from Shanghai Chinese Opera School, specialising in laosheng (senior male) in the style of Zhang (Guifeng) School. Her repertoire includes The Pearl Pagoda and The Jade Hairpin. She won the Award for Young Artist of the Shanghai Yue Opera.
王婕 Wang Jie
傅（全香）派傳人，上海戲曲學校畢業。工青衣，由越劇表演藝術家傅全香與著 名演員胡佩娣、陳穎等傳授。主要劇目有《斷指記》、《梁山伯與祝英台》、《李 娃傳》等。主演《范蠡與西施》獲中國戲劇獎小戲小品獎優秀劇目獎、小蝶杯上 海越劇新秀提名獎。
Wang Jie graduated from the Shanghai Chinese Opera School, specialising in qingyi (young or middle-aged female) in the style of Fu (Quanxiang) School. Her repertoire includes The Butterfly Lovers , Story of a Virtuous Courtesan and the award-winning production Fanli and Xishi.

Wang Rousang graduated from the Shanghai Chinese Opera School, specialising in xiaosheng (young male) in the style of Fan (Ruijuan) School. Her repertoire includes The Butterfly Lovers and A Beautiful Minister. She won silver prize at the Youth Television Performance Contest.

Wang Shuwen graduated from the Shanghai Chinese Opera School, specialising in xiaosheng (young male) in the style of Fan (Ruijuan) School. Her repertoire includes The Butterfly Lovers and Three Glimpses of the Princess. She was awarded the Outstanding Performance Award at the Television Performance Contest.
