Gilberto Gil
Gilberto Gil carries out a fundamental role in the constant modernisation process of Brazilian popular music. For 32 years, he has developed one of the most relevant and renown careers as a singer, composer and guitar-player in this field.
By Carlos Rennó
Gil has had his albums released abroad since 1978, the year of his successful performance, and live recording, at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Alone or with his band, he annually tours Europe, North America, Latin America and Japan with his contagious pop music spoken in Portuguese-Brazilian and other international languages. His music has a strong rhythmic appeal and melodic richness, as mixed with native ingredients mingled with foreign components, as the people of Brazil.
Gilberto Gil was born in June 1942 in Salvador, Bahia, one of the most traditional and original centres of music creation in Brazil. Rhythms from the northeast of Brazil like the baião, apart from samba and bossa-nova were fundamental in his formation. Using them as a starting point, Gil forged his own music to which he incorporated rock, reggae, funk and rhythms from Bahia such as afoxé.
Gil has tackled a wide variety of issues in his lyrics, from social inequality to racial questions, from African to Oriental culture and from science to religion, among others. The skill with which Gil explores these subjects makes him one of the greatest Brazilian composer-lyricists.
Tropicalism in 1960’s
Gil’s importance to the culture of his country goes back to the 1960’s, when he and Caetano Veloso created Tropicalism, the principal musical movement after bossa-nova. Radically innovative on the music scene, the movement assimilated elements from the international music movement and pop culture to the national genres, and was deeply critical on political and moral fronts. Tropicalism ended up being repressed by the authoritarian regime and both Gil and Veloso were imprisoned and exiled.
After two years in London, Gil returned to Brazil and made Expresso 2222 in 1972, an album in which he went back to the origins of Brazilian music under the influence of pop. It was the start of a series of records that became anthological and included the 1975 recording Gil Jorge , with singercomposer-guitar player Jorge Ben Jor and Os Doces Bárbaros (The Sweet Barbarians) with fellow Bahia musicians Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa and Maria Bethˆania.
Three other albums made up the so-called conceptual trilogy: Refazenda , explored rhythmic-poetic lines of country
extraction; Refavela documented Gil’s meeting with African culture incorporating rhythms from Jamaica, Nigeria, Rio and Bahia; and Realce which incorporated disco and pop music.
In the 1990’s came Parabolicamará , launched at a concert for 80,000 on Copacabana beach; Tropicália 2 , a celebration, with Caetano Veloso, of the 25 years of the Tropicalist movement and Unplugged , a collection of hit records recorded live for MTV. In 1998, his live album Quanta Gente Veio Ver won the Grammy Award for Best World Music.
Gilberto Gil has been awarded 11 gold albums, five platinum and has sold more than four million records. He has collaborated on recordings with numerous famous artists including João Gilberto and The Wailers, and sung live with Stevie Wonder and Jimmy Cliff among others.
In recognition of his work, Gilberto Gil was honoured with the Knighthood of the Order of the Arts and Literature by the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang.
For the past 15 years Gil has been involved in other activities outside the musical world.
In 1987 as Cultural Secretary for the City of Salvador, he struggled for the preservation of the city’s historical patrimony. As a city council man from 1988 to 1992 he created Onda Azul Foundation, a non-government organisation, which focuses on projects to improve people’s quality of life and raise environmental awareness. Gilberto Gil is currently Brazil’s Minister of Culture.

Bob Marley Tribute –
Kaya N’Gan Daya
Kaya N’Gan Daya is a tribute to one of Gilberto Gil's idols: Bob Marley. The two men have many things in common: each one with his own beliefs, but always with a lot of faith; both soccer fans and mainly, musicians. Both special men who used and use their music as a source of transformation, consciousness and lots of fun. Gil means as much to residents of Brazil as Marley did to Jamaicans.
Another strong connection between them is the song No Woman, No Cry, Bob Marley’s international hit in English, which Gilberto Gil recorded in Portuguese, becoming one of his greatest hits.
For the Kaya N’Gan Daya project the hard task was to select the repertoire among so many successes composed by Bob Marley. Gil wrote three versions, including Kaya N’Gan Daya (from the original Kaya) which gives its name to the project.
On the album Lick Samba , Three Little Birds, Positive Vibration and One Drop were recorded with the marvelous ‘I Threes’ (Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt) who were the backing vocals of Bob Marley and the Wailers.
Tonight is an invitation to Kaya N’Gan Daya. Enjoy it. One Love.

Bob Marley (1945–1981)
Robert Nesta Marley (Bob Marley) was born and raised in the north of Jamaica on 6 February 1945. Barely in his teens, Bob Marley moved to Kingston in the late 1950s and like many before them, Marley and his mother eventually settled in Trenchtown. His friends were other street youth and one friend in particular was Neville O’Riley Livingston, known as Bunny, with whom Bob Marley took his first hesitant musical steps. When Marley quit school he seemed to have one ambition – music.
By 1963 Marley had decided the way forward was with a group and linked up with Bunny and Peter McIntosh to form The Wailing Wailers. The Wailing Wailers released their first single, Simmer Down in the last weeks of 1963 and by the following January it was number one in the Jamaican charts, a position it held for the next two months.
Despite their popularity, the economics of keeping the group together proved too much and the group disbanded. Following his marriage to Rita Anderson and an eight month period in the US, Marley returned to Jamaica.
This was a formative period where Bob Marley was increasingly drawn towards Rastafari, and towards the end of 1960s joined up with Bunny and Peter to reform the group now called The Wailers. Their music reflected Marley’s growing interest in Rastafarianism and his new beliefs with a growing commitment to spiritual and social issues, the cornerstone of his real legacy.

Música Vincent Ford Letra em Port Gilberto Gil
No woman, no cry (4x)
‘Cause I remember when we used to sit In the government yard in Trenchtown
And then Georgie would make the fire light Log wood burnin’ through the night
Then we would cook corn meal porridge Of which I’ll share with you
My feet is my only carriage So I’ve got to push on through But while I’m gone...
Ev’rything’s gonna be alright (4x)
No woman, no cry No, no woman, no cry Oh, little darling, don’t shed no tears
No woman, no cry

No Woman, No Cry
Music Vincent Ford Lyrics in Portuguese Gilberto Gil
No woman, no cry (4x)
I remember well The people sitting there On the grass of the Aterro*, under the sun
Ob-observing hypocrites Disguised, circling around
Friends arrested Friends disappearing thus For never to return Such memories
Portraits of the bad itself Better is to leave them behind
No, don’t cry no more No, don’t cry no more
Girl, Girl Don’t cry like this No, don’t cry no more
’Cause I remember when we used to sit In the government yard in Trenchtown
And then Georgie would make the fire light Log wood burnin’ through the night
Then we would cook corn meal porridge Of which I’ll share with you
My feet is my only carriage So I’ve got to push on through But while I’m gone...
Ev’rything’s gonna be alright (4x)

A Novidade Música Bi Ribeiro, Herbert Vianna e João Barone Letra Gilberto Gil

The Novelty Music Bi Ribeiro, Herbert Vianna and João Barone Lyrics Gilberto Gil
The novelty washed ashore In the rare shape of mermaid
Half, the bust of a Mayan goddess Half, a big tail of whale
The novelty was the ultimate Paradox lying on the sand Some desiring her divine kisses
Others desiring her tail for supper Oh, world so unequal Everything is so unequal
Oh, on one side this carnival
On the other hunger is total And the novelty that would be a dream
The smiling miracle of the mermaid
Turning into a nightmare so awful There on that beach, there on the sand
The novelty was the war
Between the happy poet and the hungry Tearing a beautiful mermaid apart
Shattering the dream on each side
Oh, world so unequal Everything is so unequal Oh, on one side this carnival
On the other hunger is total
Girl of Ipanema
Music Tom Jobim Lyrics Vinicius de Moraes
Look at that beautiful thing So so full of grace The girl now coming Now passing me by Gently swaying on her way to the sea
Golden body tanned By the sun of Ipanema Her sway is more than a poem
The most beautiful thing that I’ve ever seen
Oh, why am I so alone? Oh, why’s everything so sad? Oh, all the beauty that’s around Beauty that’s not for me only Also alone passing by me
Oh, if she knew That when she passes The whole world is filled with grace
And becomes more beautiful Because of love

In City Shanties
Music Liminha Lyrics Gilberto Gil
In the shanties of the city No one has any illusions About the power of authority Of taking the decision And the power of authority If it can, doesn’t try If it tries, it’s not able to fight the shark Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh Stupid people Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh Hypocrite people The governor promises But the system says no The profits are very large
But no one wants to share Even a little Would already be a result
But the greed of those people has become a monster Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh Stupid people
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh Hypocrite people

*Alagados Music Herbert Vianna, Bi Ribeiro and João Barone Lyrics Herbert Vianna
Every day The morning sun comes and provokes them Brings from dreams to the world those who don’t want to Stilt shacks, warehouses, rags Children of the same agony
And the city With arms open in a postcard With clenched fists in real life
Denies them the opportunities Shows the hard face of evil
Alagados, trenchtown, shanty of the tide Hope doesn’t come from the sea
Nor from the aerials of TV
The art of living from faith What’s not known is faith in what
The art of living from faith What’s not known is faith in what

Brazil – Best of Gilberto Gil
Gilberto Gil has created over 30 records and had many albums released in Europe, Latin American, Israel, Japan and the US. Throughout his body of work there is a remarkable rhythmic versatility. He has used north-eastern rhythms (xote, xaxado, afoxe, baiao), boss-nova, samba, funk, ballad and other Afro-Bahian cultural expressions, as well as reggae and Caribbean influences to create his infectious and influential sounds.

An activist at heart Gil has covered a wide variety of themes in his music ranging from human behaviour to social issues such as, women’s condition, discrimination of blacks and their religions, nature, spirituality, love and music itself, always lyrical, and often critical, irreverent and provocative.
The combination of these factors added to his talent and capacity of improvisation has resulted in dynamic and vigorous performances of which tonight we shall hear some of the best.
