Recognised for the quality and variety of its programming, the annual Hong Kong Arts Festival is keenly anticipated as the premier event in Hong Kong’s cultural calendar. This year we again welcome top international and local talent in dance, music, opera and theatre, whose artistry will delight and inspire us.

Interview with Aurélien Bory

你的作品可說綜合了劇場、舞台佈置 (或演出)、馬戲,你認為這樣會令 觀眾難於投入嗎?

走進劇院不知道將會看的是什麼,這 當然是欣賞演出的最佳方式。換言 之,進入劇院時,最好保持開放的心 態,接納新的藝術形式,不帶任何成 見。在我的製作中,我嘗試給觀眾留 下廣闊的空間,透過意念聯想、相關 體驗、自身經歷,以及一切影響他們 如何看事物的東西,讓他們自行完成 作品。此外,也要製造混亂,從而激 發觀眾的想像力。因此,我把事物從 原有狀態抽離出來。事實上,《機器 人幻想曲》就是從這裏出發:把一具 七十年代汽車製造業用的機器人放在 舞台上。這是人們用的第一具機器 人,是人與機器嶄新關係的起點。它

原先擁有的特定功能,在舞台上消失 了,成為「沒有目的」的物體,也沒 有實際用途,我們對它的看法因此而 改觀:它容納和反映出我們所投射 的東西。這跟我對劇場的看法有點相 似。

你常稱你的演出者為演員,但他們沒 有台詞,也沒有文本。

我說演員,想到的是動作。演員是在 活動中的人。《機器人幻想曲》裏 的演員,利用身體作為動作的主要工 具。他跟機器人的基本對話,就在 於機器人本身也有身體,一隻組裝的

Your work could be defined as a crisscrossing of theatre, stage set (or performance) and circus. Do you think that this makes it difficult for the public to get the gist?

Not knowing what you are going to see is certainly one of the best ways of going to the theatre — in other words, going in a state of open-mindedness and acceptance of a new art form, without any preconceived ideas. In my productions, I try to leave spectators a lot of leeway. They themselves complete the work through an association of ideas, through their own references, through recognition and experience and through everything that influences the way they appropriate what they are seeing. It is also necessary to shake things up, to stimulate people’s imaginations. This is what I’m aiming at when I take things out of their usual context. In fact this is where Sans Objet starts: taking an industrial robot and putting it on stage — a 1970s robot from the automotive industry. It was the first robot used by people, a sort of starting point of this new relationship. In its own context it has a definite use whereas on stage it loses it. It becomes “objectless”, useless, and our view of it therefore changes. It becomes the receptacle and the mirror of our projections. I see theatre a bit like that.

若你有適合的構想,你想說怎樣的 「故事」?

故事內容可以是:機器人和人類,他 們要傳達的訊息是什麼?也可以講述 人類的適應能力,或美如何意外地出 現,甚或是說科技的原始形式,或人 類之後可還有未來,或是形式運用的 單純樂趣。

You often refer to your players as actors and yet they don’t utter a word and have no text. When I say actor, I’m thinking of action. An actor is someone who is in action. In Sans Objet , the actor uses his body as the main instrument for action. And on this basis dialogue with the robot is played out because the robot also has a body, an articulated arm and six axes capable of movement around itself. Generally speaking, I think that all means of action can be used on stage and, in theatre, I don’t perceive a hierarchy between text and other means of action.

In Sans Objet, the robot, which is omnipresent, appears as incredibly dominant, to the point of always posing a potential threat to the players. This encounter between mankind and, seemingly insurmountable elements, already struck me in Les sept planches de la ruse. Is this confrontation of scale something that interests you particularly?

In actual fact, I try to get mankind to meet head-on with something that is totally unfamiliar by using a specific space or an object placed on stage to which I add the capacity of movement and action. The idea of the robot came from my contemplation about theatre and the animated object. It combines Kleist and his text on puppet theatre, Schlemmer in his relationship with the object and even Meyerhold, and his constructivism. In each case there is the notion of a juxtaposition of the living and of the inert, as if this confrontation revealed a secret. And also the idea of the robot seemed important today given our

relationship with technology. It is complex. We love it and we use it as much as we hate it and avoid it. It upsets our relationship with the world. These are the issues in Sans Objet

What “story” did you want to tell, if you had an appropriate formulation?

The story would be: robots and men, what have they got to tell? It could also be mankind’s capacity to adapt, or the unexpected emergence of beauty, or maybe primitive forms in technology, or the future of humankind after humankind, or the simple pleasure of the use of form.

Sans Objet , which I experienced at its opening in Vidy-Lausanne, is both funny and disturbing. At first, the human body comes across as technically efficient and the robot as sensitive which lends a burlesque and fantasy-like (or poetic) vocabulary to things. Then the whole thing subtly glides towards a terrifying dehumanisation and the machine ends up giving a clear demonstration of its physical power and force. Was this idea about friction between humour and tension already there at the start?

Aurélien Bory was born in Colmar in 1972. His studies in physics in Strasbourg led him to the field of architectural acoustics. He then ended his scientific curriculum in 1995.

Bory settled in Toulouse where he joined the creative studio at the Lido, the Circus Arts Centre. In 1998, he played in Theatre Tattoo’s L’Odyssée directed by Mladen Materic. In 2000 he founded Compagnie 111 with actor Olivier Alenda. He then conceived and began the six-year-long space trilogy project, in collaboration with Phil Soltanoff, including IJK, Plan B and Plus ou moins l’infini (More or less, Infinity).

In 2003 he directed Pierre Rigal in his first solo creation Erection, the beginning of their ongoing collaboration, which also originated their second work together: Arrêts de Jeu premiered in 2006. Merging various other fields, he created Taoub in 2004 in Tangier with 12 Moroccan acrobats, this very show launched the international career of the Groupe acrobatique de Tanger (Tangier Acrobatic Group). In 2008 Bory was the recipient of the CulturesFrance / Créateur sans frontiers (Creator Without Borders) trophy for his international creations, notably Les sept planches de la ruse (The Seven Boards of Skill) created in China in 2007 with performers from Dalian. In 2008 and 2009, he conceived two creations: Qu’est-ce-que tu deviens? (What Have You Become?), a portrait of a woman, and Sans Objet, a piece for an industrial robot. In 2011, he created Géométrie de caoutchouc, a piece for a tent at Grand T in Nantes. His creations include different artistic fields: theatre, circus, dance, visual arts and music. His genrecrossing approach is inscribed within the question of space and is explored through his distinctive scenography.

to perform in leading art venues worldwide, thus gaining a solid international renown over the last decade. In the past eleven years, Compagnie 111 has produced eight creations: IJK in 2000, Plan B in 2003, Taoub in 2004 with the Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger, Plus ou moins l’infini in 2005, Les sept planches de la ruse with the artists from Dalian in 2007, Questcequetudeviens? in 2008, Sans Objet in 2009 and Géométrie de caoutchouc in 2011.

While continuing to perform the accumulated repertoire, Compagnie 111 initiates a new project every year. In his creation processes, Aurélien Bory has articulated his work around a permanent, enduring team, as well as project-oriented collaborations with other artists (for instance Pierre Rigal and Stéphanie Fuster in Toulouse, or with New-Yorker Phil Soltanoff, the Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger, and also the Dalian art school in China), enabling the consistency of a continuous work, and at the same time opening up his work to new forms. Each creation can be inscribed at the crossroad with another definite context; it emerges from the rubbing against an artist’s world, or against a place, a practice, or a particular field. This creative force could not occur without the constant help from faithful partners: Compagnie 111 has benefited from the support of the Fondation BNP Paribas since 2003, with respect to the structural aspects of the company as well as

Alongside many years of strong international connections, Compagnie 111’s continued presence in Toulouse demonstrates its strong attachment to the area. The company has also been subsidised by the DRAC and the Région Midi-Pyrénées, the city of Toulouse and the Conseil Général de la Haute Garonne, such support by territorial institutions vouching for the company’s local implantation.

For the past 11 years, several theatres have also ensured their substantial support to Compagnie 111, through creation residencies: Théâtre de la Digue ( IJK ), Théâtre Garonne (Plan B), Théâtre National de Toulouse ( Plus ou moins l’infini , Sans Objet ), Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne ( Plus ou moins l’infini , Sans Objet ), Théâtre National de Bordeaux en Aquitaine ( Questcequetudeviens? ) and finally, for Géométrie de caoutchouc , le Grand T in Nantes where Aurélien Bory has been associated artist since January 2011. This new collaboration regarding creation support, residencies, educational outreach to the public, and the presentation of the company’s repertoire is scheduled to last three years.

Alenda’s curriculum in circus arts and performance started with full-time training at the Lido school in Toulouse, and continued in 1996 with a two-year course in the National Circus School in Montréal, Canada. During the creation and international tour of Mladen Materic’s with the Compagnie Tattoo in 1998 and 1999, he performed side by side with Aurélien Bory. In 2000, the two founded Compagnie 111. Alenda then took part in every creation and performance of the company, starting with IJK in 2000, and the rest of the and Plus ou moins l’infini) up to 2009, when he became one of the two acrobats confronted with the industrial robot in Sans Objet. In 2011 he performed in Bory's Géométrie de caoutchouc

Boyer started his curriculum as a circus performer at Annie Fratellini’s renowned school in Paris from 1995 to 1997. He then specialised at the Rosny School and the National Center for the Circus Arts (CNAC) until 2001. During these years, he took part in many artistic projects (with Gilles Baron, Pierre Droulers and even a humanitarian mission with Clowns-without-Borders in 1998). From 2002 to 2004, Boyer performed for several contemporary circus shows, including Variétés with Bernard Kudlak’s Cirque Plume and with La Clique for a creation at the Toulouse TNT. He also performed as an acrobat in the opera Aïda, and in 2004 in Japan, he created Voyage by Sébastien Lalanne. In 2004, he was cast for a replacement in Plan B. In 2010, he took up Pierre Sans Objet, and has since been touring worldwide with the show. In 2011 he performed in Bory's new piece Géométrie de caoutchouc.
