故事大綱

雅典的泰西斯公爵和亞馬遜的希波利 塔女王三天後就要舉行婚禮。為了增 添喜慶氣氛,公爵找來鎮上的工匠擔 任業餘演員,在婚禮當晚演出悲劇 《皮拉摩斯和西斯貝之喜劇版》。

仙王奧伯龍和仙后蒂塔妮亞帶着他們

的隨從抵達雅典,打算秘密出席婚禮 (人類見不到他們),然而仙王仙后 卻為了蒂塔妮亞的一個童僕吵架。

為了得到那個童僕,奧伯龍派忠心的 精靈帕克在蒂塔妮亞身上施法術,令 仙后愛上一頭驢子。

與此同時,凡間雅典也出現另一場爭 端。美麗少女荷蜜亞的父親埃格斯想 強迫女兒嫁給深愛着她的年輕貴族迪 米特立斯,但卻遭她拒絕。

荷蜜亞愛慕的是另一位年輕人雷山 德,卻得不到父親的贊成。埃格斯想 請泰西斯公爵來主持公道,公爵基於 雅典法律命令荷蜜亞嫁給迪米特立 斯,否則會被處死。

Synopsis

The action begins three days before the marriage of Theseus, Duke of Athens to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. To add to the festivities, the duke orders a play, “The very lamentable comedy… of Pyramus and Thisby,” to be performed on the evening of the wedding. He engages a troupe of amateur actors, composed of artisans of the town.

Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairies, also arrive in Athens with their retinues to secretly (they are invisible to humans) attend the wedding. However, Oberon and Titania are in dispute over the love and protection of a young page currently in the care of Titania.

Oberon, assisted by his faithful elf, Puck, casts a spell on Titania in order to take the page back. The spell even makes the queen of the fairies sleep with a donkey.

Another dispute also darkens the sky of Athens. Egeus, the father of a beautiful young maiden, Hermia, wants to force her daughter to marry Demetrius, a young noble who is in love with her although she does not want him.

Hermia is in love with another young man, Lysander, who loves her but is refused by her father. Egeus asks Theseus to settle the dispute. The duke takes refuge behind the law of Athens and orders Hermia to choose between Demetrius and death.

To escape this terrible fate, Hermia and Lysander decide to flee the town. Demetrius, warned by Helena, a young Athenian woman who is madly in love with him but to whom he is indifferent, pursues the two lovers through the forest.

Finally, the elf Puck resolves the problem by casting a spell on each of the couples (with a few little mistakes and other pranks along the way), transforming their hatred into beautiful love.

The artisans of Athens, engaged by Theseus to perform a play on the occasion of his marriage, present themselves at the Palace.

Scene 2 – The Palace of Theseus (Music: Mendelssohn)

Hermia and Lysander are in love. Helena loves Demetrius who loves Hermia. Egeus, the father of Hermia, intends to force his daughter to marry Demetrius. He asks the Duke to settle the argument. Theseus lays down the law: Hermia must marry Demetrius or die. Hermia decides to flee Athens with Lysander. The artisans steal a few pieces of furniture from the Palace to use in their decor.

Scene 3 – The Clouds (Music: Teruggi)

Titania, her attendants and her young page are on the way to Athens; they meet Oberon and his faithful Puck. Oberon wants to take the young page. Titania is angry. Oberon asks Puck to go to the end of the world to pick Cupid’s flower, the juice of which can make people fall in love.

Scene 4 – The Forest (Music: Mendelssohn, Scherzo)

On their flight, Hermia and Lysander prepare to spend the night chastely in the forest. Demetrius is in pursuit, himself followed by Helena. Demetrius violently rejects the young woman. Oberon witnesses the scene and tells Puck to cast a spell on Demetrius with the juice of the magic flower.

Scene 5 – The Forest (Music: Teruggi)

By mistake or by playful intent, Puck casts a spell on Lysander instead of Demetrius.

When he wakes up, Lysander sees Helena and falls wildly in love with her.

Scene 7 – The Forest (Music: Teruggi) Oberon is angry with Puck and tells him to correct his mistake.

Scene 8 – The Forest (Music: Mendelssohn, Intermezzo)

When she wakes up, Hermia sees that she has been abandoned, and flees.

Scene 9 – The Forest (Music: Teruggi) Puck finally casts a spell on Demetrius.

Scene 10 – The Forest (Music: Teruggi) Titania still refuses to surrender her young page to Oberon. She chases him, then demands a lullaby from her fairies and goes to sleep.

Scene 11 – The Forest (Music: Maillot)

The artisans rehearse their play. They have to cast the roles: the Wall, the Lion, Moonshine, Pyramus and Thisby. For fun, Puck frightens them.

Scene 12 – The Forest (Music: Mendelssohn, excerpts from the Fourth movement of the Fourth Symphony)

Helena flees the strange love of Lysander and gets lost. Led by Puck, she finds Demetrius who, waking up, falls madly in love with her. Lysander returns. Another dispute with Demetrius, but this time over Helena. Hermia is roughly rejected by Lysander.

Oberon is close to his objective, and victory. Titania is under a spell.

Scene 14 – The Forest (Music: Maillot)

The artisans are reassured and return to finish their rehearsal.

Scene 15 – The Forest (Music: Teruggi)

Puck is back. He casts a spell on the artisans, takes hold of Bottom and turns him into a donkey.

Scene 16 – The Forest (Music: Teruggi)

Titania wakes up. Seeing the donkey, she falls in love, and makes love to it.

Scene 17 – The Forest (Music: Teruggi)

Having taken their revenge, Oberon and Puck decide to return some order to the love-lives of the young Athenians. To do this, the magic flower is essential.

Scene 18 – The Forest (Music: Mendelssohn)

On waking up, Lysander loves Hermia again and Demetrius finally accepts Helena’s love. Hippolyta and Theseus, happy with the way things have turned out, ask Egeus to accept Lysander as his son-in-law.

Oberon now wants total victory. Titania only has eyes for her donkey. She rejects her young page, who is immediately taken away by Puck. Oberon then makes the donkey disappear and takes its place in the heart of his mistress.

Scene 20 – The Forest (Music: Maillot)

The artisans look for Bottom. When they find him, he is once again in human form. In more of a hurry than ever, they rush to the Palace to perform their play.

Scene 21 – The Palace of Theseus (Music: Mendelssohn, Fairy Song and Chorus) The wedding approaches, the happiness is palpable. The play is prepared.

Scene 22 – The Palace of Theseus (Music: Maillot)

The artisans perform their play, “The very lamentable comedy and the very cruel death of Pyramus and Thisby”.

Scene 23 – The Palace of Theseus ( Music: Mendelssohn, Chorus and Finale) Epilogue.

Born in 1960 in Tours, France, Maillot studied dance and piano at the National Conservatory of the Region of Tours under the direction of Alain Davesne, afterwards he entered Rosella Hightower’s International School of Dance in Cannes. He continued his studies until he was awarded the Lausanne prize in 1977. Thereafter, John Neumeier engaged him with The Hamburg Ballet, where as a soloist he danced principal roles for five years. An accident brought a brutal halt to his dancing career. In 1983, Maillot returned to his hometown of Tours where he was named choreographer and director of the Grand Theatre Ballet of Tours, which later become a National Centre of Choreography. He created more than 20 ballets for this company. In 1985, he created the Dance Festival, le Chorégraphique.

He was invited to create Les Adieux for les Ballets de Monte-Carlo and in April 1987, Le Mandarin Merveilleux which was a great success. That same year, he also created L’enfant et les Sortilèges . During the 1992-1993 season, he became Artistic Advisor of les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, and in September 1993, H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover appointed him as ChoreographerDirector. He has created for les Ballets de MonteCarlo: Bêtes Noires (1993), Home Sweet Home and Dov’e la luna (1994), Ubuhuha (1995), Vers un pays sage (1995), Romeo and Juliet (1996), Recto Verso (1997), l’Ile (1998), Cendrillon and Casse-Noisette Circus (1999), Opus 40 and Entrelacs (2000), Oeil pour œil and La Belle (2001), Men’s Dance (2002), D’une Rive à l’Autre (2003), Noces (2003), Miniatures (2004), Le Songe (2005), Altro Canto I and II (2006 and 2008), Faust (2007), Men’s Dance for Women (2009), Sheherazade (2009), Daphnis et Chloé (2010), Opus 50 and Lac (2011).

His personal inward quest is the origin of a new language that enables him to handle the great classics as well as to establish his mark in the world of abstraction — an artistic approach that has been heralded throughout the international press.

His fervent passion is the development of his company and its ability to open to other creators. Thus Maillot enriches the repertoire of the company by annually inviting renowned choreographers to Monaco, and, at the same time, offering young choreographers the opportunity to work with his company.

With the same verve, he assumes responsibilities as director and choreographer, and relies on a choice of dancers whose strong and contrasting personalities, as well as their great faculty of adaptation, spurs his never-ending pursuit to highlight their competency and their professional artistry. This fundamental preoccupation led him, in 2000, to create the Monaco Dance Forum, of which he is currently the artistic director.

Via the many tours of les Ballets de MonteCarlo to which he gives great importance, Maillot is recognised as one of the most represented French choreographers abroad, his work being performed in London, Paris, New York, Madrid, Lisbon, Seoul, Hong Kong, Cairo, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brussels, Tokyo, Mexico, Beijing and Shanghai.

He has been invited as a guest choregrapher by les Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Royal Swedish Ballet, Essen Ballet, The Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Korea National Ballet, Stuttgart Ballett, Royal Danish Ballet and le Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève where he staged productions of Cinderella and Romeo and Juliet, among others.

In March 2007, Manfred Beilharz, intendant of the Hessisches Staatstheater in Wiesbaden invited Maillot to stage the opera Faust and Jean-Louis Grinda, Director of

the Opera of Monte-Carlo, proposed Maillot stage the opera Norma in 2009.

In 2007, he produced his first dance film, Cinderella , then Le Songe in the fall 2008, taken from the ballet.

Maillot's production, La Belle, obtained the Nijinsky Award for the Best Choreographic Production of 2001 at the Monaco Dance Forum in 2002, and the Danza & Danza Prize for the best show 2002 which is awarded by Italian critics. Maillot was given the Prize Choreographer award (2007) at the Benois de la Danse Ceremony for his production of Faust. He was also awarded the Premio Dansa Valencia 2010 award.

In 2011, dance in Monaco underwent a major evolution. Under the Presidency of H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, les Ballets de Monte-Carlo combined with Monaco Dance Forum and the Princess Grace Dance Academy. Jean-Christophe Maillot was appointed the head of this institution that now comprises an international dance company, a multi-faceted festival and a high-level school.

Maillot is Officer of the Order of Cultural Merit and Chevalier of the Order of St Charles in the Principality of Manaco, and also Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters and Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in France.

Teruggi was born in 1952, in La Plata, Argentina. He studied music and physics. Moving to France in 1977, he enrolled at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique to attend the electro-acoustic composition and musical research class. In 1983, he became a member of the GRM at INA (musical research group in the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel), where he taught the use of new digital systems for composers. In 1997, he became artistic director of the GRM. Since 2001, he has been director of research and experimentation at INA. He also has a doctorate in art and technology from the University of Paris VIII and lectures at the University of Paris I – Sorbonne, on sound and the visual arts. He runs seminars on new technologies and music at the University of Paris IV and is president of the French section of the International Society for Contemporary Music. Teruggi has composed 80 works for concert, theatre, cinema and dance. He created several acousmatic works including Sphæra (Eterea, Aquatica, Focolaria and Terra); works of mixed music such as E cosi via (for piano and tape) and Le Cercle (for piano, flute, clarinet and tape); and has produced many recordings including Struggling (2000).

After studying percussion at the Conservatoire National of the Tours region with Jacques Mercier and Philippe Macé, Maillot worked as a percussionist in classical, contemporary and jazz ensembles. Since 2006, he has taught at the CMI (Centre Musical et Informatique), Paris. As a composer, he has worked for the theatre: with Nicolas Lormeau, at the Studio-Théâtre of the Comédie-Française on Courteline, and at the Grand-Guignol, L’Âne et le Ruisseau (Alfred de Musset); with Hugues Massignat at the Théâtre Gérard-Philippe of Saint-Denis on Cendres de cailloux (Daniel Danis); and with Véronique Samakh at the Centre Dramatique National of Sartrouville on Méchant! (Anne Sylvestre). In the field of dance, he has worked with Jean-Christophe Maillot, at les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, on Le Songe, Casse-Noisette Circus and Ubuhua, at the Centre Chorégraphique National of Tours, on Du voyage d’hiver and Naranjas et Citrons and, at the Hamburg State Opera, on Nébule. He has also worked with Nicolas Musin, Jean-Vincent Boudic and, recently, with the choreographer Jacopo Godani. Maillot has composed music for several documentaries, including Christelle Sabarots’ Cité 10 au Bout du Jardin (France 3) and Sonia Schoonejans’ Un Siècle de Danse (Arte). He also composed the music for Imagina 2001 (festival of computer-generated images) and the Nijinsky Awards of 2002 and 2004.

Born in 1942 in Nice, Ernest has made the street both the setting and the subject of his ephemeral works of art which echo and underscore the historical and current events there. He has previously collaborated with les Ballets de Monte-Carlo by creating, in December 1995, a new back-drop-curtain at the Opera of Monte-Carlo, on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the Company. For Jean-Christophe Maillot, he designed the scenography of Cinderella in 1999, La Belle in 2001, participated in Miniatures in April 2004 and designed Le Songe in 2005. For his latest event Parcours Jean Genet, in Brest, he developed his characters with the assistance of some dancers from les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Gaëtan Morlotti, Evgueni Slepov and Jean-Claude Nelson. He created work inspired by the texts of great Christian mystics, produced in association with the principal dancer, Bernice Coppieters, that resulted in an exhibition and the publication of a book, Extases, published by éditions Gallimard.

Born in 1959 in Tours, Drillot is a visual artist who worked as a stage manager, painterdecorator and prop man while studying at the Beaux-Arts. In 1987, he designed his first stage sets, Thème and 4 Variations, for Jean-Christophe Maillot, and has subsequently worked with him regularly on Le Jardin, Jeux d’amour, Ubuhuha, Lueur d’amour, Vers un pays sage and Recto Verso. In Monaco, he designed the lighting in Maillot’s productions: Bêtes noires, Home Sweet Home, Dov’è la Luna, Ubuhuha, Vers un pays sage, Duo d’anges, Concert d’anges, Roméo et Juliette, Recto Verso, L’Ile, Cendrillon, Casse-Noisette Circus, Opus 40, Entrelacs, Œil pour œil, La Belle, Men’s Dance, D’une rive à l’autre, Noces, Miniatures and Le Songe. He has also done lighting design for several other artists and companies including Bertrand d’At, Renato Zanella, Ted Brandsen and Josette Baïz. He designed the lighting for the opening ceremony of the Games of the Small States of Europe in Monaco (2007); the Young Choreographers programmes at the workshop of les Ballets de Monte-Carlo (2008); and the exhibition Étonne-moi! at the Villa Sauber, for the Nouveau Musée national of Monaco. In October 2004, Drillot was appointed Professor of Stage Design at the École Supérieure des Beaux-arts of Monaco.

“The great tradition of dance in Monaco only holds meaning when it recalls, above all, its devotion to the tradition of modernity. It is not a nostalgic hold on a glorious past, rather is diligently shrouded in the discovery of new expressions.” H R H the Princess of Hanover.

It is in response to this expectation that in 1993, H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover appointed Maillot as head of les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. Crowned with a strong career path as a dancer with Rosella Hightower and John Neumeier, coupled with his experience acquired as choreographer and director of the National Choreographic Centre of Tours, Maillot opens up new horizons for the Monegasque company. He constitutes an original repertory around his own creations mixing the great masters of American abstraction like Lucinda Childs, Karole Armitage and William Forsythe with European choreographers such as Jacopo Godani, Nacho Duato and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui among others.

Maillot’s personal touch is highlighted in such creations as Dov’è la luna, Recto-Verso, Vers un Pays Sage, Entrelacs, Opus 40, Men’s Dance, D’une Rive à l’Autre, Noces, Miniatures, as well as in the great classics such as Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker, Cinderella, La Belle, Le Songe and Faust.

Alongside Maillot, many artists of various disciplines have collaborated in these works: visual artists like George Condo, Ernest Pignon Ernest, Philippe Favier, Dominique Drillot; composers such as Yan Maresz, Andrea Cera, Ivan Fedele, Ramon Lazkano, Martin Matalon, Gérard Pesson, Marc Ducret; and costume designers like Jérôme Kaplan and Philippe Guillotel. Resolutely turned towards the future and new technologies, the choreographer also calls on photographers and video artists, such as Ange Leccia and Gilles Delmas.

Itinerant during part of the year, since 1993 the company of 50 dancers appears on the greatest international stages, participating in the prestigious splendour of the Principality.
