在過去三十年，藝術節的「青少年 之友」計劃共有超過 80 萬名本地中 學及大專學生參加 。藝術節今年更 首度舉辦「藝術 X 科技創作比賽」， 鼓 勵 同 學 善 用 科 技， 進 行 藝 術 創 作，預計會吸引更多年輕朋友參與。

1973, more than 1,700 local and international artists a year take part in the Festival and its bravura mix of innovative contemporary works and traditional offerings. In doing so, our acclaimed Festival burnishes Hong Kong’s international reputation in the arts, while spotlighting local culture.

Centre’s live-streamed play To Be a Machine, and Bristol Old Vic’s production of the outstanding comingof-age play Wonder Boy. I am particularly grateful for the Festival’s continuing dedication to the development of our local artists, and the cultivation of arts and culture in the community. Over the past 50 years, the Festival has commissioned the produced more than 250 local productions, embracing Cantonese opera and contemporary dance, theatre, music, chamber opera and much more. Many of the works enjoyed subsequent runs in Hong Kong and around the world. The Festival also presents some 250 PLUS events annually. This year’s PLUS programme includes three discrete videos on ice dancing, in celebration of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

The Festival’s Young Friends Scheme has reached more than 800,000 local secondary and tertiary school students over the past 30 years. I expect even more interest from our youth this year with the debut of the Arts X Tech Creative Competition and its spotlight on technology-inspired art.

My congratulations, once again, on the milestone 50th edition of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Over the next half century, I have no doubt that the Festival will continue to entertain, enlighten and dazzle Hong Kong and the world, while advancing our new and welcomed status as an Eastmeets-West centre for international cultural exchange as laid out in the National 14th Five-Year Plan.

今 年 是 香 港 藝 術 節 五 十 周 年， 感 謝你與我們一同見證這重要的里程 碑 。雖然疫情持續帶來挑戰，但藝 術節仍繼續致力為觀眾帶來海外與 本地的出色表演 。 國際交通尚未復蘇，而香港藝術節 亦作出相應調整，以線上和線下形 式呈獻一系列世界級精采表演 。今 年以「繫」為主題，帶出香港藝術 節如何透過戲劇、舞蹈、歌劇和音 樂等節目，跟世界保持聯繫，同時 也跟觀眾保持聯繫 。我們深信優秀 的藝術，不論以何種形式呈現，都 能療癒人心 。我們衷心希望能為你 在這極具意義的一年，帶來許多難 忘時光 。

The Hong Kong Arts Festival marks a significant milestone this year and I would like to thank you for joining us in celebrating its 50th edition. Though the pandemic continues to make productions everywhere challenging, the Festival is poised to bring you some of the best in performing arts from across the world.

The prevailing conditions have made travel difficult and the HKAF has once again adapted its programmes in response. The Festival will continue to present an excellent world-class line-up, both online and in-venue. This year’s theme is “Connected”: the HKAF remains connected— to the world and to its audiences— bringing a range of programmes, including theatre, dance, opera and music. We are convinced that great art, in whatever form it might be presented, is a tonic and we sincerely hope to offer you many memorable moments in this landmark year.

香港藝術節 HONG KONG ARTS FESTIVAL 扎根香港的國際藝壇盛事 聯繫中國與世界

An International Arts Festival in Hong Kong Connecting China and the World 香港藝術節於 1973 年正式揭幕，是國際藝壇中重要 的文化盛事，於每年 2、3 月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地 及國際藝術家的演出，以及舉辦多元化的「加料」 和教育活動，致力豐富香港的文化生活 。

香港藝術節是一所非牟利機構，2021/22 財政年度預 算（包括第 50 屆香港藝術節及 2022 年「無限亮」） 約港幣一億二千四百萬，當中香港特區政府的年度 撥 款 佔 總 收 入 約 21%， 另 外 約 16% 需 來 自 票 房 收 入，約 45% 則需依賴來自各大企業、熱心人士和慈 善基金會的贊助和捐款 。預計餘下的約 18% 則來自 其他收入，包括政府針對捐款和贊助收入而提供的 配對資助 。 香港藝術節每年呈獻眾多國際演藝名家精采多元的 演出，例如 *：

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total budget for FY2021/22 (including the 50th Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2022 “No Limits”) is approximately HK$124 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 21% of the Festival's total income.

Around 16% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 45% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 18% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations.

On behalf of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, my warmest congratulations to the Hong Kong Arts Festival on its 50th anniversary. Over the years the Festival has become one of the world’s most prestigious arts events. It has also contributed hugely to the cultural development of our city; stimulating our imaginations, opening windows on the world, but above all bringing wonder and delight to us all.

This year, the Festival has quickly responded to the challenges of the pandemic to bring us an outstanding programme.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series will bring world-class performances through online productions from the Bayerische Staatsoper, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Paris Opera Ballet. Laila, supported by the Club in celebration of the Festival’s 50th anniversary, will provide a behind-the-scenes insight into the making of this innovative performance experience.

The Jockey Club has long promoted local talent, and this year there will be even more opportunities via the Jockey Club Local Creative Talents Series and the all-new Jockey Club InnoArts Series. Meanwhile, the fourth edition of HKartsFestival@TaiKwun will present a number of online productions in different disciplines, connecting artists and the community. 在市集，蒙塔古家的少爺羅密歐向羅莎蓮求愛不遂，他的朋友麥 丘提奧和班沃里奧安慰他 。卡布雷家的侄子狄巴特向羅密歐一伙 挑起爭端 。卡布雷和蒙塔古是世代仇家，衝突愈演愈烈，兩個家 族的主人亦捲入其中 。衝突直到維羅納親王的介入才結束，他要 求兩個家族了結彼此的恩怨世仇 。

In the marketplace, Romeo, son of Montague, unsuccessfully attempts to confess his love for Rosaline; his friends Mercutio and Benvolio console him. Tybalt, the nephew of Capulet, provokes a fight with Romeo and his friends. The Capulets and the Montagues are sworn enemies, and as the confrontation continues the Lords Capulet and Montague, the heads of each family, become involved. The conflict only ends with the arrival of the Prince of Verona, who demands that the families end their feud.

Romeo and his friends decide to pursue Rosaline by going to a masked ball at the Capulet’s house, given in honour of Juliet’s entrance into society, for a wealthy suitor. Tybalt discovers Romeo’s identity and orders him to leave the party, but Lord Capulet interferes and invites Romeo to remain. He meets Juliet and they are immediately besotted with one another.

Juliet then appears on her balcony, dreaming of Romeo, when he enters the garden. They declare their love for one another.

Act II

Juliet sends her nurse to give Romeo a letter, in which she proposes a secret wedding. The lovers are wed in a chapel by Friar Lawrence, who believes their marriage might end the animosity between the two families. But Tybalt then fights with Mercutio and kills him. Romeo avenges his friend by killing Tybalt and is exiled from Verona. He flees to the Capulet house to spend the night with Juliet.

The next morning, Romeo must leave. The lovers embrace and he departs as her parents arrive with Pâris, who wishes to marry Juliet.

She declines Pâris’s offer of marriage and he leaves disappointedly.

Angry about her rejection of Pâris, Juliet’s parents threaten to disown her. Juliet hurries to Friar Lawrence for help. The Friar concocts a plan and gives her a phial of sleeping potion that will cause her to fall into a death-like sleep. Romeo, informed by Friar Laurence, will awaken her in the Capulet family tomb and together they will leave Verona.

Juliet is found lifeless in her bed when her bridesmaids arrive the next morning to prepare her for her wedding to Pâris. Romeo does not receive the Friar’s message explaining Juliet’s plan and upon his return to Verona is grieved to hear of her death.

He disguises himself as a monk to enter the Capulet family crypt to see her. Seeing Pâris by her body, Romeo kills him. Believing Juliet to be dead, Romeo drinks a phial of deadly poison. Juliet awakens, sees Romeo’s dead body, and stabs herself. ©Opéra national de Paris

Russian dancer and choreographer Rudolf Nureyev was no stranger to the ballet Romeo and Juliet, having interpreted the role of Romeo in Kenneth MacMillan’s celebrated staging for the Royal Ballet in 1965. Nureyev first began crafting his own choreographic vision of William Shakespeare’s tragedy in 1977 at the London Festival Ballet, where he also performed as Romeo. Three years later, still haunted by the story of Verona’s two feuding families, he restaged Romeo and Juliet at Milan’s La Scala, once again performing the role of Romeo. Upon being named Artistic Director of the Paris Opera Ballet in 1983, Nureyev began working on what would become the definitive production of his ballet, premiering in the French capital in 1984. It is this version that has remained a beloved staple in the Paris Opera Ballet’s repertoire ever since.

Nureyev adorned Romeo and Juliet in colourful Renaissance decor and costumes. Set to Sergei Prokofiev’s vivid score, the production is often described as cinematic for its complex use of visual effects and psychological nuances. Male characters take on

added importance in Nureyev’s version, allowing the audience to witness Romeo’s coming of age story, from flirtatious youth to his development of serious feelings for Juliet. Mercutio and Tybalt are also featured performers whose final duel is a complex web of personal and political significance to the feuding families. Commenting on these conflicts, Nureyev noted, “I’m convinced that Renaissance Verona and Elizabethan London, divided between old superstitions and a hunger for the new world, had sex and violence in common; which oddly enough links them to our times.”

While Nureyev referred to the masterpiece of Elizabethan theatre that Shakespeare published in 1597, the bard drew on a number of historic sources to write Romeo and Juliet. As early as the first century CE, Roman poet Ovid penned the Babylonian legend of Pyramus and Thisbe in Metamorphoses, describing the ill-fated romance of a young couple forbidden to marry by their rival families.

By the 16th century, the names Romeo and Juliet had become associated with star-crossed lovers in a number of Italian stories that provided the blueprint for Shakespeare’s expanded tale.

Programme Notes

The first known dance performance of Romeo and Juliet premiered in 1785 at Venice’s Teatro San Samuele. Performed to the music of Luigi Marescalchi, the ballet was created by Venetian choreographer Eusebio Luzzi.

In the 19th century, two major composers orchestrated Romeo and Juliet in France and in Russia: Hector Berlioz in 1839 and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1869. Alongside Prokofiev’s score created for the Czech Ballet Brno’s production of Romeo and Juliet in 1938, these three orchestrations have become the most widelychosen accompaniment for dance productions of Romeo and Juliet.

In 1940, the Kirov Ballet in Saint Petersburg staged a version set to Prokofiev’s music, while as recently as 2007 Sasha Waltz created a contemporary production using Berlioz’s score at the Paris Opera.

The versions by John Cranko (1962), MacMillan, and Nureyev are all set to Prokofiev’s music and have proved to be the most enduring on international stages.

From the written page to numerous musical, cinematic and choreographic interpretations, Romeo and Juliet has known many forms throughout the centuries.

Nureyev chose to restore the tale’s original setting in Renaissance Verona, but its universal themes of love and violence are anything but outdated. His movement compositions and modern staging techniques bring the production well into the present performed by an exquisite cast of world-class dancers.

William Shakespeare publishes Romeo and Juliet, a tragedy in five acts in verse and prose. The plot is based on an Italian tale by Matteo Bandello translated into English verse by Arthur Brooke in 1562 under the title The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet. In 1582, William Painter published Palace of Pleasure, a prose version of the story. Shakespeare would borrow from both works but give greater depth to the story by developing the secondary characters, particularly Mercutio and Count Paris.

Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet has its premiere at the Brno Ballet in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) with choreography by Vania Psota.

The same year also sees the birth of Rudolf Nureyev, who would later leave his own indelible mark on the ballet’s history.

Leningrad’s Kirov Theatre brings Prokofiev home and on 11 January presents his Romeo and Juliet to choreography by Leonid Lavrovsky. The ballet, danced by Galina Ulanova and Konstantin Sergeyev, would long remain the reference version.

Rudolf Nureyev’s Romeo and Juliet premieres at the London Festival Ballet.

Twelve years earlier, Nureyev had danced the role of Romeo opposite Margot Fonteyn in Kenneth MacMillan’s choreography at London’s Royal Ballet.

About Nureyev

Rudolf Nureyev was trained under legendary ballet teacher Alexander Pushkin in the prestigious Kirov Ballet school and joined the company, the most important dance company in the Soviet Union, as soloist.

Nureyev was seen as a tool of Soviet propaganda until his defection after a hugely successful performance of La Bayadère at the Palais Garnier in Paris in 1961.

He then danced with the Grand Ballet du mrquis de Cuevas in Monte Carlo and the Royal Ballet in London. He took over as director of the Paris Opera Ballet in 1983, and worked on extending the repertoire of the Ballet, enriching earlier periods with revivals of the Baroque, pre-Romantic era, and expanded later periods with commissions of young choreographers of contemporary ballet.

He shook up the Corps de Ballet hierarchy by casting promising young dancers from the Company in soloist roles and appointing five 20-year-old principal dancers. He led the troupe to perform in the United States, Venice, Vienna, and Athens, as well as the Avignon Festival. He helped revive a flagging company and restored it to its former glory.

Sergei Prokofiev was born on 11 April 1891 in Sontsovka, Ukraine. After studying at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory of Music under RimskyKorsakov, among others, Prokofiev spent time as pianistcomposer at the Soirées de musique contemporaine, where his innovative, radical and provocative style was already evident in his Piano Concerto No 1, his Piano Sonata No 2 and above all his Piano Concerto No 2 (1913). of the same name, and a ballet commissioned by Diaghilev, Ala and Lolly (which was to become the Scythian Suite). But in 1918, in spite of his revolutionary sympathies, he left Russia and went to the United States, via Japan. For ten years, he divided his time between the United States, France and Germany.

During this period he composed operas (The Love of Three Oranges in 1919, The Angel of Fire in 1920-1927), ballets (Chout in 1920, The Steel Step in 1927 and The Prodigal Son in 1929), and symphonic works (Symphony No 1 and 2 in 1924 and 1928).

From 1927 onwards, he returned regularly to the USSR, where he took up Soviet citizenship and became, along with Shostakovich, the most prominent official composer. His productivity continued to increase: the ballet Romeo and Juliet, music for the films Lieutenant Kijé and Alexander Nevsky, the operas Semyon Kotko and Engagement at the Convent, as well as piano concertos. During the war, he was evacuated to the Caucasus, along with other Soviet intellectuals, where he composed the music for Sergei Eisenstein’s film Ivan the Terrible, and his Symphony No 5. After Symphony No 5, the success of new works such as the ballet Cinderella, was overshadowed by the publication, in 1948, of the notorious “Zhdanov Doctrine”, which criticised his formalism (as well as that of many other Soviet composers). His following works (Sonata for piano and cello, Symphony No 7, etc.) show a focus on simplicity. His death on 5 March 1953 in Nikolina Gora, near Moscow, went almost unnoticed, being overshadowed by the news of the death of Stalin the following day.

Aurélie Dupont joined the Paris Opera’s Ballet School in 1983.

After entering the Paris Opera’s Corps de Ballet in 1989, she was promoted to Coryphée in 1991 and Sujet in 1992. The same year, she won the Gold Medal in the junior category at the Varna International Ballet Competition.

She received the Opera’s Prix AROP in 1993 and the Prix du Cercle Carpeaux in 1994. Dupont has performed in all the major productions from the classical and the contemporary repertoires.

She was also cast in solo roles in Pierre Lacotte’s Giselle and La Sylphide, George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments, Roland Petit’s world premiere production of Rythme de Valses (1994), Rudolf Nureyev’s La Bayadère, Roland

Promoted to Prima Ballerina in 1996, she was made an Étoile following the performance of Don Quixote (Rudolf Nureyev) on 31 December 1998.

Since then, she has added numerous roles and works to her repertoire, including Capriccio/ Rubies, Symphony in C, Violin Concerto, Concerto barocco, Agon, Le Palais de Cristal (George Balanchine), Boléro ( Maurice Béjart), Giselle (Jean Coralli & Jules Perrot, as well as the version by Mats Ek), Tatiana in Onegin (John Cranko), Sylvia, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (John Neumeier), The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, La Bayadère, Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake (Rudolf Nureyev), Carmen (Roland Petit), Le Parc (Angelin Preljocaj), In the Night, En Sol, and Dances at a Gathering (Jerome Robbins).

Dupont made her official farewell to the stage of the Paris Opera on 18 May, 2015 after a performance of Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon.

Aurélie Dupont took over as the Paris Opera’s Director of Dance in August 2016, succeeding Benjamin Millepied.

She has continued to dance occasionally, including at the Palais Garnier in September in 2018, where she performed in Ekstasis at the invitation of the Martha Graham Dance Company.

She is also a Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur, a Chevalier dans l’ordre national du Mérite and a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.

Born in Erba, Italy, in 1930, Ezio Frigerio met Giorgio Strehler in 1955 at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan and became his main set designer. He followed him to La Scala, where Frigerio worked with directors Luca Ronconi, Gilbert Deflo and Werner Herzog. He also collaborated with Roger Planchon (winner of a Molière in 1988 for

best set design for George Dandin at the Théâtre National Populaire in Villeurbanne) His creations at the Paris Opera include The Marriage of Figaro (sets and costumes, 1973); Der Rosenkavalier (1976); Simon Boccanegra (1978); Iphigénie en Tauride (1984); Medea (1986); The Queen of Spades (1990); Mireille (2009); The Lady of the Lake (2010), as well as the ballets of Roland Petit (Nana, 1976) and Rudolf Nureyev (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, La Bayadère, sets and costumes for Romeo and Juliet) and Patrice Bart (sets and costumes for Coppélia). He passed away on 2 February 2022.

Born in 1951 in Mantua, Mauro Pagano studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and in 1973 became assistant to Ezio Frigerio (notably for Nureyev’s Romeo and Juliet in 1980 at La Scala) while beginning a career as a set and costume designer, his works include: Così fan tutte (Salzburg Festival, 1982, Scala, 1983); Elektra (Cologne Opera, 1983); Capriccio and The Tales of Hoffmann (Théâtre de la Monnaie, 1983); Le Médium and L’italiana in Algeri (Théâtre du Châtelet); Monteverdi’s Le Retour d’Ulysse dans sa patrie (The Return of Ulysses to his Homeland) and La Cenerentola (Salzburg Festival); Aïda (Scala). For the Paris Opera, he designed the sets and costumes for L’Amour des trois oranges (directed by Daniel Mesguich), the costumes for Iphigénie en Tauride (directed by Liliana Cavani), as well as the sets and costumes for Tristan et Isolde (directed by Michael Hampe) and La gazza ladra (directed by Florian Leibrecht). After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence (stage design), Vinicio Cheli joined the Mai Musical in Florence in 1974, and then from 1979 to 1989 worked at the Piccolo Teatro in

Milan, with Giorgio Strehler. From 1987 to 1991 he worked at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro.

He also designed the lighting for Pier Luigi Pizzi (notably for the opening of the Opéra Bastille, Les Troyens), for Nicolas Joel (at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse) and for Núria Espert. He has been commissioned by the festivals of Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, Ravenna, Versailles and also various theatres and opera houses in France and elsewhere. He was the technical director of the Venice Biennale in 1995.

At the Paris Opera, he collaborated on Rudolf Nureyev’s productions of Swan Lake (1984), Romeo and Juliet (1984), La Bayadère (19922001) and Sleeping Beauty (1997 production) and on the operas Les Troyens (1990), Samson et Dalila (1991), De la maison des morts (2005), Mireille (2009), La Dame du lac (2010), Pagliacci (2012), Cavalleria rusticana (2012).

He teaches stage design at the Nouvelle Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Stéphane Bullion joined the Paris Opera Ballet School in 1994, before joining the Opera’s Corps de Ballet three years later, at the age of 17. He became a Coryphée in 2001 and danced in L’Après-midi d’un faune (Nijinsky). In 2003, he became a Sujet and won the AROP Dance Prize. He became a Premier danseur in 2008.

Over the years it has played host to the greatest choreographers, among them George Balanchine, Serge Lifar, Rudolf Nureyev, Roland Petit, Maurice Béjart and Pina Bausch.

Since August 2016, the Ballet has been directed and managed

by Aurélie Dupont. The company consists of over 150 dancers and their principal dancers give 180 performances each year, primarily at the Palais Garnier.
