Among the multi-faceted cultural scenes of the Mainland, folk music is said to be one of the most energetic and humanistic music genres. Contemporary folk rockers in China impress audiences with simple yet genuine vocals and unrestrained passion, whether it is at a live concert, a theatrical piece or a gig in a bar. Receiving thunderous applause from youngsters, their stunning performances also appeal to renowned writers, wellknown public figures and many in the media.

Folk music is not only a kind of homeland music, but also an unrivalled emblem of a carefree, forthright and simple lifestyle. Folk songs inspire people to discover a brand new way of life, leading them to perceive the world from a bold and authentic perspective.

Contemporary Chinese folk music emerged in the 90’s. A group of freelance singers started playing guitars in

bars and piazzas to air their opinions, which reflected their circumstances or their thoughts on society. Such a straightforward way of singing about personal views touched their audiences and emerged as a breakthrough genre, much different from romance-driven pop.

In 2001, the River Bar was established in Sanlitun, Beijing, which is regarded as the early prototype of livehouse. Folk singers such as Wild Children, Wan Xiaoli, Xiaohe, Wangjuan were regular performers there, as were rock bands like Zuoxiao Zuzhou, Tongue, Ruins and IZ. This venue was like a cradle, nurturing Chinese contemporary folk rockers, and a rendezvous point for poets, music critics and both local and foreign artists. Since its opening, Chinese contemporary folk singers have unleashed a rocking, spirited music fueled by humane causes.

Outstanding folk concerts and festivals have allowed the public to enjoy the music of brilliant new folk musicians: Xiaohe’s unparalleled vocal style which goes beyond the imagination; Zhang Weiwei and Guo Long’s self-penned songs, and their collaborative work with drama producer Meng Jinghui; Wutun, once the vocalist of the unbeatable rock band, Tongue, now a self-confessed and sober folk singer-poet; and Zhang Quan, the owner of the River Bar, creates his new works on dombra and harmonica.

Music: Zhang Huisheng, Zhou Yunpeng

Lyrics: Haizi

Witness the spread of wild flowers on the grassland where gods died

The wind from far away is even farther away

My tweedle sobs without tears

I return this far to the grassland

One is called wood one is called horsetail

My tweedle sobs without tears

Wild flowers agglomerate only when that which is far is dying Hung over the grassland the moon is as bright as a mirror

It has been shining for a thousand years

My tweedle sobs without tears

I ride alone across the grassland

The Child of China

Music / Lyics : Zhou Yunpeng

Don’t be the child of Karamay

The burning pain on skin would keep your mother’s heart burning

Don’t be the child of Shalan Town

He can’t fall asleep in the dark underwaters

Don’t be the child of the Chengdu people

The drug addicted mum won’t be home in seven days and nights

Don’t be the child of the Henan people

HIV is activating in the bloodstream

Don’t be the child of the Shanxi people

Your father will be turned into a basket of coal

Don’t even think of seeing him again.

Don’t be the child of China

They are starving enough to swallow you

It is better to be the age-old goats in the wilderness

They will glare at you to protect their offspring

Don’t be the child of China

for both your parents would be cowards

To prove they are iron-hearted they would give way to leaders when facing imminent death

The 90’s Music / Lyrics : Xiaohe

We were sitting smoking by the dark waters of the river

And the headlights were softly lighting up the smoke between our fingers

I and my beloved were listening to the same old story several times

Don’t say that you don’t want to meet him ever again

Don’t say that you are not eager to meet anyone else like him

It seems that life keeps giving us unexpected gifts

Dancing, surrounded by the sound of a cat’s snoring I hugged you from behind

I touched your right breast with my left hand and your left breast with my right hand

Dancing under the gaze of youths standing in the shadows I hugged you from the front

Then you accidently stepped on my right foot with your left foot

And on my left foot with your right foot

I want you to take a milk bath everyday and change into one beautiful piece of clothing one after another

It’s only me who can humiliate you this way

Drink the wine she makes You are sotted enough to swallow her

In the desolate morning the river in the grassland and the daughter of a herdsman are counting stars

One star two stars three stars four stars five stars six stars seven stars eight stars nine stars ten stars eleven stars twelve stars thirteen stars fourteen stars fifteen stars sixteen stars seventeen stars eighteen stars nineteen stars twenty stars twenty-one stars twenty-two stars twenty-three stars twenty-four stars

Father

Music / Lyrics : Wan Xiaoli

You are sitting under a locust tree which has been hewn down When putting down the bowl and chopsticks you wish to order something

It’s not a national affair nor the farm work in the field It does not matter who gets promoted or rich

Their importance is far from those two trees –One with green leaves at the top Another with mud stuck on the root

You are wondering your parents are getting old your children are growing up you are no longer youthful

Your parents are getting old Your children are growing up You are no longer youthful Your parents are getting old Your children are growing up You are no longer youthful Your parents are getting old Your children are growing up

Zhou Yunpeng

Zhou Yunpeng, born in 1970 in Shenyang, Liaoning, is an independent Chinese folk singer and poet. Since nine he has been blind, due to an eye disease, and received education in a school for the visually impaired. In 1994, he graduated in Zhangchun University with a major in Chinese Language. Having embarked on a street singing career in 1995, Yunpeng wanders around singing and writing poems and folk songs, expressing his thoughts and views. He has published two publications, Destiny and Door and Lower Shore

In 2003 Modern Sky bought out all of his published albums, including Breathing as Silent as a Mystery . In early 2005, Yunpeng was nominated Best Folk Artist in the 5th Chinese Media Music Awards. Two years later, he produced the album Chinese Kids at his own expenses. Its graceful yet melancholic score and lyrics reflect social reality and won him the Best Folk Artist and the Best Lyrics Writer in

the 8th Chinese Media Music Awards. In 2010, Yunpeng published another album of pastoral poems, Cattle And Lamb Going Down The Mountain.

“Zhou Yunpeng is a miracle in the Chinese music scene. If he were not influential for being a folk singer, would he still win public acclaim in the ever unruly poetic world. This is a question worth considering,” a modern Chinese folk poet expresses his understanding based on the phenomenon triggered by Yunpeng. Instead of just having an interest in poetry, he looks into independent and free standpoints, and then represents them in his work.

In almost all circumstances, Yunpeng does not present his disposition as furious and rebellious, as some folk singers do. In his mind, the extreme emotions, like anger or revolt, are spontaneous and accidental. People should always have a tranquil and gentle personality. “ I believe that musicians should think independently and not be easily affected by others. If you become popular because of your rebellious temperament, then you think that is what works and keep being rebellious for a lifetime, then this would be total nonsense and particularly risky in a certain sense.” Yunpeng believes that poems or songs are not tools to exploit, revolt or manipulate people’s minds. To him, it is the poetic nature that matters.

Defining Yunpeng’s position is not an easy task. Poet critic Zhang Qinghua thinks that it is actually his fickle temperament that strongly echoes the rhythm of this contemporary society.

Born in 1975 in Handan, Hebei Province, He Guofeng, known in the world of music as Xiaohe, is one of the most creative and influential artists in the Beijing music scene. Besides his recordings, his solo and ensemble music performance; he is active in drama, writes incidental music, and is a creative force in the underground movie industry. He is also the head of Maybe Horse, a Maybe Mars sub-label dedicated to supporting and developing Beijing’s and China’s most innovative folk and ethnic musicians.

Xiaohe first attracted serious attention in the late 90s with his experimental band, a Dada-esque performance art-rock troupe

Glamorous Pharmacy, a fluid ensemble that mixed folk, jazz, experimentation, improvised performances and action art to create a strangely surreal sound that never seemed to settle anywhere before turning around and heading off in a different direction.

At the time, China’s musical underground was small and fairly homogenous, but the playful and anarchic spirit of the members of Glamorous Pharmacy presented several new doors into various styles that were eagerly opened and pursued by other musicians. Glamorous Pharmacy revelled in the creation of new branches of Chinese underground music, variously called among other things: introverted, weird, and malicious music.

At the same time Xiaohe, which is the alias he settled on for his folk and improvised music performances, played guitar, drums and accordion at River, a legendary old Beijing folk bar. Between these two projects Xiaohe quickly developed a serious following among artists and music fans in the China music scene.

Daydreaming

Music / Lyrics : Wu Tun

Embarking from Urumqi of Xinjiang

I ride on a burro and arrive in Beijing

I heard of a nice girl who holds a kung fu contest to select her husband at Tiananmen

I can only go along for the ride for I don’t know kung fu I can only watch people enjoy the limelight

Beijing is really big and densely populated

When foreigners say no Chinese say yes I pick up a penny on the roadside and put it on my chest

A girl is coming towards me with her flying hair

Another girl is coming towards me and talking with her eyes

We walk out of the city and across the abandoned automobile factory

We are back to the village watching people plow and sow We come to the blossoming field I pluck out a flower and put it on her chest

I arrive at Tiananmen unknowingly

The martial arts masters from all over the world are already there

They wish to take a look at the girl’s complexion and be her bridegroom

But she is so fierce that all of them regret being there

I can’t find the way home she commandeers my burro and tells me not to daydream

I can only jet off to Urumqi

“My friends ask me, "Where’s my burro?”

I said it makes use of non-violent means to defeat all kung fu masters

Now it is carrying girls to travel around the world

One day they will come here and no longer hurry on

We lie on the blossoming field

We pluck out a flower and put it on the burro’s chest

Ten Thousand names

Music / Lyrics : Wu Tun

People no longer consume food no longer mate and procreate

There won’t be any prisoners in jail

No patients in hospital

Everything surrounding people and everyone around substances are waiting for good moments at all times

Planes land on the treetop

Cars anchor on the water surface

Trees seem to be growing still

bearing colourful stones

This is such a wonderful moment

This is such a wonderful moment

This is such a wonderful moment

This is such a wonderful moment

Let’s go to Amsterdam

The men and women there wear a garland on their heads and tie leaves around their waists

We stand at the display window on the street side

their bodies are our fruit our smiles are their evidence their smiles are our fruit our bodies are their evidence

It’s said that the people there feel good about themselves

Don’t you think so

Have you figured out

Nobody there feel bad about themselves

Let’s go to fill this blank space

Let all kids become atomic bombs

Let substances have a say and freedom to release hormones anytime

Let selfishness and greed be the most luxurious enjoyment

Let friendship and the humdrum be a luxury

Their bodies are our fruit

Our smiles are their evidence

Their smiles are our fruit

Our bodies are their evidence

Gandhi has obtained it

An Indian has killed Gandhi Martin Luther King has obtained it

An American has killed Martin Luther King

Mandela has obtained it and becomes the first black president

A Chinese man has obtained it but he can’t go home

Is this a black comedy or a beautiful snare

All secrets are being disclosed anyway

No one can hide themselves

I don’t have any excuses to explain our behavior anyway

I don’t have any excuses to satisfy our imagination anyway

The next year’s Nobel Prize will present awards to all of the Chinese it raises our GDP and promotes our domestic demand

On some day, the Nobel Prize will be given to everyone anyway

All citizens and each of their lives no longer afraid of others who live better than they do

All animals, plants and cells no longer afraid of others who live better than they do

All atomic bombs filled with hormones no longer afraid of others who live better than they do

A Rice shop

Music / Lyrics : Zhang Weiwei and Guo Long

Misty rain in March

The wavering south

You are sitting in your empty rice shop

Grabbing an apple and your fate you are probing your own scent

Outside the window

people hustle and bustle with their vision dropping on the misty road

Your dancing steps sweep across the room time dies out as mist

Lover do you ever feel that tomorrow has come

Our boat has anchored off the shore I will wash my hair and climb up the mast propping our twig-like tender home

The Vase

Music / Lyrics : Zhang Weiwei and Guo Long

There must be some horses which want to go back to ancient times like someone who misses silent movies

Like some flowers which desire drought and wilt

Only such a status would ready them for a vase

Like those vases soft and pure white

Like those vases showered with dust

An Apple Tree

Music / Lyrics : Zhang Quan

Yesterday I dreamt of an apple tree it’s still at the long riverside Children had fallen asleep

The elderly had woken up

The moon had shown her face

Women all got drunk

The apple tree in my dream only you know that I am wandering in the street of a strangeland

We sing a song to recollect our past memories

have You ever known

Music / Lyrics : Zhang Quan

You said the azalea over the mountain top is reddish

Have you ever known how long they have grown

You asked how many times those people have ridden across the road and lain over the river

You heard the flying cuckoo quarrel

Have you ever known where its home is How far have those people who left their native place travelled

Wild Children

Music/Lyrics : Wild Children

They say your face is covered with dust

They say your tears fly in the sky

They say you live in the mountains

They say nobody listens to your songs

Don’t question how hard the journey is and who I am

Don’t worry about who I trust under the sun

Don’t say who I hate when I’m hungry and cold

Don’t wait until it’s too late to love someone

Yellow River Ballad

Music / Lyrics : Wild Children

The Yellow River keeps on flowing flowing past my home past my hometown of Lanzhou Oh my family there hear me singing the Yellow River Ballad

In the daytime I continue my endless journey past my home past my hometown Lanzhou

When the moon shines on the iron bridge I face the Yellow River and sing

Every time I wake up I miss my home miss my hometown Lanzhou Miss the fragrant osmanthus flowers miss my fair lady

The Yellow River keeps on flowing flowing past my hometown of Lanzhou Wanderers keep on singing singing my Yellow River Ballad

Wu Tun

Renowned as King of the Underground, Wu Tun is the vocalist of Tongue, and is dedicated to the creation of poems and songs. He is often invited to participate in large scale music extravaganzas, such as Midi Festival, Snow Mountain Festival and Modern Sky Festival… etc.

In 2009, Tun published his own collection of hymns, A Passing Glance , and produced his acoustic guitar piece, Flowing Backwards, which is also included in a charity folk album, Red Bulldozer.

If Tongue symbolises a sharp social axe in modern Chinese music, Tun is believed to be the handle of the axe. Right now, Tun conveys his insightful views through poetry and his guitar. Being dedicated and loyal to his true self, Tun always creates music with an unwavering stance.

For Me, topped the Donban Pop Chart for over half a year.

In 2010, Wei and Guo Long launched the album, Silver Restaurant. For both of them, Baiyin and Beijing were where they encountered music and formed intimate circles of friends. Both places are riotous yet peaceful. This album symbolises my life in Beijing over these 12 years,” says Wei. Raging Baiyin youth are always striving to reach their goals they have long aspired to.

From being an ex-member of Wild Children, Glamorous Pharmacy and IZ; to his time with Xiaohe, Wan Xiaoli, Zuoxiao Zuzhou and Wangjuan; and finally as an independent performer in 2007; Wei has sustained a bluesy disposition, his voice sounds gloomy yet intimate and humorous.

Translated by Cabbie Kwong

When they first came across a performance by Wild Children in a Lanzhou lounge, Wei and Guo Long accidentally discovered their lifelong mission. “Those were the Grunge years. We thought that rockers had a wild outlook, with their long hair and leather jackets. However, it was a total shock when we first saw Wild Children, who were three bald headed men wearing grey T-shirts, carrying guitars covered with fabric. They were singing Northwest folk songs in a serious and righteous tone.” In 1998, the duo headed off to Beijing with Wild Children and became important players in the folk movement.
