Choreographer’s Notes
All three pieces I chose for this performance are based on the same theme: “The Urban Jungle”. It is about people who live in the city and people who live in the jungle. I have experienced both ways of living and hope to bring the city culture and the jungle atmosphere together in these dances.
Tikus-Tikus
A long journey to the US and several countries in Europe and Asia made me want to do something, something to address the political situation in my country. The elite politicians always act absurd and emotional which reminds me of people cramping, reminding me of the behaviour of people in Papua. For this reason I dream of a peaceful country in my mind.

Story of B

Namjin Kim was born in Pusan, South Korea in 1968. He was an actor before he was introduced to dance. He worked with various dance companies in Korea before he moved to France to dance in 1995. He was the first Korean male dancer to work with France National Dance Company (C. C. N. R. B. / Catherine Diverres, 1998-2002). Then he worked with Les Ballets C de le B / Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Dance Theater Chang creates unique Korean contemporary dance theatre works which show Kim’s powerful, yet calm movements. Kim has won several awards in Korean for his dance work. Recent works include Hamlet (2007) and Brothers (2008).

Choreographer’s Notes
According to my memory, it was during winter in the city of London. Like all the other big cities, London carries the sadness that comes from the cold indifference of the busy people on the streets … The constant sound of a beggar pleading spread throughout the train and the fact that no one tried to help or cared about the beggar made me sad.
What was the homeless man begging for?
My sadness does not come from the winter’s cold, nor the hunger inside of me. But it comes from the eyes that do not even glance at me.
I beg …
I look to you.

Choreographer’s Notes
Using the Seven Sorrows as a reference point, Be Still, My Soul explores the place of love and loss in the human experience. Briefly, the Seven Sorrows incorporates the themes of Prayer, Flight, Searching, Suffering, Death, Receiving and Burial, and Be Still, My Soul stands to be a unique and mesmerising experience.
Set to Jordi Savall’s realisation of the anonymous score of Homentage al Misteri D’Elx La Vespra, alongside a newly commissioned score from New Zealand’s foremost dance composer, David Long, the full-length version of Be Still, My Soul inventively combines floorbased and bungy-assisted dance movement.
Be Still, My Soul, it is hoped, will carry audiences on an emotional journey through scenes of beauty and images of strength and perseverance, which together symbolically depict a story common to human experience.
Material for this presentation is focused on non-bungy sections of the work. This section of the work was created while Hill was Artist-in-Residence at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and is performed by graduating students from the School of Dance at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Hill has received welcome support from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, New Zealand International Arts Festival, Lady Adrienne Stewart, Creative New Zealand and Hong Kong Arts Festival for the continuing development of Be Still, My Soul.
