第五十二屆香港藝術節隆重舉行,可喜可賀。

歷經五十餘年,香港藝術節已成為享譽國際的文化盛 事。今屆藝術節續放異彩,雲集約1,400名本地及海 外藝術家,帶來逾150場不同類型的表演,由音樂、 歌劇、戲曲,以至戲劇、舞蹈、跨媒體藝術和大型特 備節目等,必定是另一場令人難忘的藝術盛宴。

今屆藝術節以李察.史特勞斯的《拿索斯島的亞莉安 妮》揭開序幕,由巴伐利亞國立歌劇院獻上這齣莊諧 並重的精妙劇作,令人期待。個多月後,上海芭蕾舞

團將呈獻中國與法國聯合製作的《花樣年華》,作為 藝術節的閉幕表演。這齣精彩絕倫、中西協作的芭蕾 舞劇,正好反映香港獨特的中西創意文化根源,並彰 顯我們作為中外文化藝術交流中心的重要地位。今年 藝術節匯聚全球各地佳作,包括別具一格的「聚焦當 代阿拉伯」系列,更形豐富多采。

我對香港的文藝創意事業前景充滿信心。政府銳意竭 盡所能,鼓勵本地藝術家奮發向上,並確保他們獲 得所需和應得的表演機會。正如我在《施政報告》所 述,新成立的文創產業發展處每年會推動60個業界考 察團、海外展覽及其他文化展演活動;「電影發展基 金」和「創意智優計劃」共獲注資43億元,以支持本 港電影業;「重點演藝項目計劃」亦即將推出,協助 本地大型表演藝術創作,以及培育代表香港的國際文 化品牌。

政府會繼續與各界攜手合作,積極推動文化藝術及創 意業界的發展。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 52nd edition.

Over this past half century and more, the Hong Kong Arts Festival has grown into a celebrated international cultural event. This year promises to be another memorable Festival, featuring about 1,400 overseas and local artists in more than 150 performances across multiple genres, from music, opera and Chinese opera to theatre, dance, multi-arts and large-scale special events.

This year’s Festival opens with the Bayerische Staatsoper’s presentation of Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos, a bravura mingling of high art and comedy. It closes, more than a month later, with the Sino-French coproduction of the Shanghai Ballet’s A Sigh of Love. This inspired East-West collaboration reflects Hong Kong’s singular East-West creative and cultural roots and our growing role as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. Indeed, this year’s Festival is rife with performances from all over the world, including a special Arab Arts Focus series.

I believe in Hong Kong’s creative promise, and my Government is determined to do all it can to encourage our local artists and ensure that they have the performance access they need and deserve. As I mentioned in my Policy Address, our newly established Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency will promote 60 industry missions, overseas exhibitions and other cultural showcases annually; a total of $4.3 billion will be injected into the Film Development Fund and the CreateSmart Initiative to support our film industry; and the Signature Performing Arts Programme Scheme will be launched to assist largescale, local performing arts productions and nurture the development of Hong Kong cultural brands internationally. The Government will continue to work hand in hand with relevant sectors to proactively promote the development of arts, culture and creative industries.

I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its longstanding commitment to the arts, and to the Festival’s many sponsors and donors for their generous support.

I warmly welcome you to the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival. Thank you for your staunch support, especially during and after the tumultuous period brought by the pandemic. With the Festival now back in full swing, we cherish this opportunity to come together once again and appreciate the arts with you. As we celebrate the Festival’s full-scale comeback and contemplate the development of the arts in this ever-changing environment, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has played a critical role in nurturing and sustaining the performing arts scene.

I would like to thank the HKSAR Government, acting through the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, which has graciously provided an annual subvention that serves as the bedrock of our ongoing efforts. 走過半世紀的香港藝術節,一直為國際與本地最優秀 的表演者搭建舞台,積極促進中外文化交流。經歷了 三年疫情的洗禮,藝術節終於在第52屆再度迎來「花 樣年華」,在全面復常的狀態下再度為本地觀眾與遊 客獻上今天和明日的經典,不單讓大家可以從眾多音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇、戲曲和多媒體作品中重新細賞遺世 瑰寶,更邀來多位重量級中外大師坐鎮,陣容鼎盛、 豐富多元,足以滿足不同觀眾群體的喜好。

今屆我們繼續支持本地藝術發展,為香港的藝術家提 供創作土壤,更連結國際及本地精英聯手開闢藝術新 境界。同時鼓勵藝術家善用創新科技融合創意,為觀 眾帶來耳目一新的體驗。

For more than half a century, the Hong Kong Arts Festival has provided a stage for the most outstanding local and international performers, and actively enhanced cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. After three years of the pandemic, we are delighted to come back in full force and present to local audiences and overseas visitors treasured classics of today and tomorrow. Our programme features an eclectic lineup of music, dance, theatre, Chinese opera and multimedia productions, with a range of Chinese and international legends set to command the stage. With such a rich and diverse programme, there is something to delight everyone.

This year, our ongoing support for the development of local artists provides opportunities for them to flex their creative muscles through collaborations with leading artists from all over the world. At the same time, we also empower artists to innovate through the power of technology and create refreshing experiences for our audiences.

An International Arts Festival in Hong Kong Connecting China and the World

香港藝術節 於1973年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的 文化盛事,於每年2、3月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國 際藝術家的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育 活動,致力豐富香港的文化生活。

香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2023/24財政年度預 計收入(包括第52屆香港藝術節及2024年「無限亮」) 約港幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔 總收入約12%,另外約25%需來自票房收入,約48% 則須依賴來自各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊 助和捐款。預計餘下的約15%則來自其他收入,包括 政府針對捐款和贊助收入而提供的配對資助。

香港藝術節 積極與本地演藝人才合作,並致力為新進 藝術家提供展示才華的平台。藝術節至今委約及製 作逾250套本地全新創作,包括粵劇、戲劇、室內歌 劇、音樂和舞蹈作品,不少製作更已在香港及海外多 度重演。近年的藝術節新製作包括《飯戲攻心》踏台 版、《末戀無愛合約》、《我們最快樂》、《鼠疫》、 《陪着你走》、《百花亭贈劍》、《香港家族》三部曲、

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts, as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events, in February and March each year.

The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2023/24 (including the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2024 “No Limits” programme) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 12% of the Festival’s total income. Around 25% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 48% from sponsorship and donations by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching grant scheme, which matches income generated through private-sector sponsorship and donations.

The HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres, such as*:

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced more than 250 local productions across various genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include Table for Six on Stage, Loveless Romance, We Are Gay, The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

香港藝術節 多年來與知名海外藝術家及團體聯合製作 不少優秀作品,當中包括由香港藝術節、香港歌德學 院及翩娜.包殊烏珀塔爾舞蹈劇場聯合製作的《抹窗 人》、由倫敦老域劇院、布魯克林音樂學院與尼爾街 製作公司製作、香港藝術節為聯合委約機構之一的 「橫貫計劃」之《暴風雨》及《李察三世》、由香港 藝術節及上海國際藝術節聯合委約的《青蛇》、香港 藝術節與三藩市歌劇院聯合製作的《紅樓夢》、香港 藝術節與芬蘭國家歌劇院及芭蕾舞團聯合製作的《拉 娜》等。

香港藝術節 大力投資下一代的藝術教育。「青少年之 友」成立31年來,已為逾820,000位本地中學生及大專 生提供藝術體驗活動。藝術節近年亦開展多項針對大、 中、小學生的藝術教育活動,包括由國際及本地藝術家 主持的示範講座及工作坊、學生展演、演前講座、公開 彩排以及欣賞藝術節演出。同時,通過「學生票捐助計 劃」,藝術節每年提供約10,000張半價學生票。

香港藝術節每年主辦一系列多元化並深入社區的「加料 節目」,例如電影放映、示範講座、大師班、工作坊、 座談會、後台參觀、展覽、藝人談、文化導賞團等, 鼓勵觀眾與藝術家互動接觸。

香港藝術節亦銳意將共融藝術理念拓展到社區每一角 落。由藝術節與香港賽馬會慈善信託基金聯合呈獻 的「無限亮」計劃於2019年正式開展,透過一系列的 演出及多元的教育及社區外展節目,「無限亮」致力 創造共融空間,讓不同能力人士均可以一同欣賞、參 與、擁抱藝術。

為創造更穩健的財政環境以及確保藝術節的長期可持 續性, 香港藝術節基金會 於2022年成立,旨在讓藝術 節在未來進行年度預算以外的大型特別項目。

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer), co-produced by the HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch; Richard III and The Tempest, produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with the HKAF as a co-commissioning institution; Green Snake, co-commissioned with the Shanghai International Arts Festival; Dream of the Red Chamber, co-produced with the San Francisco Opera; and Laila, a co-production of the HKAF and the Finnish National Opera and Ballet.

The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. During the past 31 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached more than 820,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 halfprice student tickets each year.

The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions and guided cultural tours.

The HKAF actively promotes inclusion via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

To provide greater financial security and long-term sustainability for the Festival, the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation was officially launched in 2022. Donations to the Foundation will be used towards enabling the Festival to present in the future large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for.

分場 Scene Synopsis

序幕:幻象

《花樣年華》的歌聲像霧靄一樣飄盪在空 中,李先生和王太太擦肩而過。人間最美好的 情感,也許只能曇花一現。

Prologue: Illusion

The song The Blossom Youth is hanging in the air like a thin fog. Mr Li and Mrs Wang pass by each other. For many people, the experience of love can be as brief as the blossoming of youth, or it can even be just wishful thinking.

第一幕 Act One

第一場:石庫門前街景

1930年代的上海街景,石庫門前紛繁喧鬧, 玩世不恭的阿林酒醉了,在街頭戲弄他人。

王先生夫婦和李先生夫婦相繼搬進了同一幢 石庫門。也許相識有緣,也許命運安排,人 的情感像雲像霧琢磨不透。

第二場:石庫門內

同一屋簷下,李先生沉浸在自己的創作中。王

先生要出差,李太太也隨即匆匆出門。生活似 乎很平淡,空氣中卻瀰漫着異樣的感覺。

Scene 1: Shikumen Street View

In the 1930s, people are passing a shikumen building on a street in Shanghai. Ah Lin, a cynical man, is teasing others on the street. Two couples, Mr and Mrs Wang and Mr and Mrs Li, move into the same building. Whether it is fate or destiny, human emotions are like clouds and fog. They are hard to understand.

Scene 2: Inside the Shikumen

Inside the building, Mr Li buries himself in his creative work. Mr Wang goes off on a business trip; Mrs Li hurriedly leaves the building as well. Everything appears to be normal, but there’s something strange about the atmosphere in the shikumen

第三場:弄堂口餛飩攤 李先生與王太太在餛飩攤不期而遇,一份好 感、一絲溫情沖淡了彼此的孤寂。

第四場:百樂門舞廳

紙醉金迷,舞影婆娑。舞會上王太太和李先生 發現彼此的伴侶百般尋找機會忘情起舞。他們 似乎預感到了甚麼,痛苦而無奈地離去。

第五場:空寂的弄堂

再次在弄堂口相遇的李先生和王太太相互訴說 內心的痛苦,彼此撫慰着各自受傷的心靈。

Scene 3: The Dumpling Stall

Mrs Wang goes to buy dumplings and meets Mr Li. The spark between them washes away their loneliness.

Scene 4: The Paramount Ballroom

In the ballroom, the hosts and guests enjoy some dancing. Mr Wang and Mrs Li dance together. Mrs Wang and Mr Li realise their spouses are having an affair and leave the ballroom in utter despair and helplessness.

Scene 5: Silence in the Lane

Under a dim light, Mr Li meets Mrs Wang. They pour out their pain to each other and try to comfort each other’s broken hearts.

戰火逼近上海,人心浮動。王先生與李太太 私奔逃難,阿林把這消息告訴了李先生,李 先生痛苦不堪。時局愈來愈亂,市民紛紛逃 難。混亂中李先生和王太太也被人群沖散, 孤獨無助的王太太在街頭徘徊,阿林告訴她 李先生在旅館等她。

第三場:小旅館

王太太來到旅館見李先生,兩人深埋心底的 情感終於爆發,但當他們剛要互相傾訴時, 炮彈炸落,兩人失散。

尾聲:石庫門前街景 戰爭勝利,萬眾歡慶。李先生回到原來的石 庫門,他發現王太太帶着她的兒子消失在歡 慶的人群中。只留下李先生孑然一人在雨中 漫無目的地遊蕩。

Act Two

Scene 1: An Illusion

Mr Li shows his novel to Mrs Wang. Mr Li and Mrs Wang imagine that they are dancing together as the characters in the novel.

Scene 2: The Entrance to the Lane

War is about to break out in Shanghai. Mr Wang elopes with Mrs Li. Ah Lin sees them leaving and gives the news to a heartbroken Mr Li. Chaos descends. People are trying to flee from the war and Mr Li and Mrs Wang are separated in the crowd. Mrs Wang wanders hopelessly in the street. Ah Lin brings her the news that Mr Li is waiting for her at an inn.

Scene 3: In the Inn

Mrs Wang meets Mr Li at the inn and both of them become emotional. The sound of bombing grows closer and closer, and the two lovers are separated.

Epilogue: Outside the Shikumen

The war has ended and Mr Li returns to the shikumen. He watches Mrs Wang disappear into the cheering crowd with her son and lets out a sigh of love. Mr Li wanders aimlessly in the rain alone.

The White-Haired Girl performing team was formally renamed as the Shanghai Ballet in 1979. The WhiteHaired Girl, an award-winning classical Chinese ballet created in the 20th century, brought instant fame to the company and helped establish its leading position in China. The Shanghai Ballet is now one of the world’s predominant ballet companies. Responsible for one of “China’s dance classics of the 20th century”, the company has brought the unique glamour of Chinese dance to the international stage with more than 2,000 performances until this day.

For over 40 years, the Shanghai Ballet has performed numerous ballet classics, including Swan Lake and Romeo and Juliet (Derek Deane), Coppelia (Pierre Lacotte), La Sylphide (Jean-Paul Gravier), The Nutcracker (Tetsutaro Shimizu), La Sylphide, Giselle and Don Quixote. The company has created and staged many new ballet productions, including The White-Haired Girl, Bright Red Star (Zhao Ming), The Butterfly Lovers (Xin Lili), A Sigh of Love (Bertrand d’At), Patrick de Bana’s The Last Mission of Marco Polo, Jane Eyre and Echoes of Eternity, Derek Deane’s Hamlet, The Nutcracker (Shanghai Grand Theatre Version), The Sleeping Beauty, The Lady of the Camellias and Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, as well as Balanchine and Beyond and The Ode of Joy—Gala Performance. These productions all demonstrated the unique “Shanghai art style”: elegant and soft, deep and broad.

Artists such as Shi Zhongqin, Mao Huifang and Ling Guiming were star dancers of The White-Haired Girl era, while Xin Lili, Wang Qifeng and Yang Xinhua continued the company’s traditions and new-generation dancers such as Ji Pingping, Fan Xiaofeng, Wu Husheng, Qi Bingxue, Zhang Wenjun, Tu Hanbin, Gong Liwei, Xu Jingkun, Feng Zichun, Zhao Meici and more continue to shine on stage.

Since its founding, young dancers of the company have won a total of 58 medals in various international dance competitions, marking the breakthrough of Chinese ballet.

The Shanghai Ballet is active in cooperation and artistic exchange with artists and companies both at home and abroad. The company has toured not only in China but also throughout the world, including performances in the USA, the UK, Canada, France, Spain, The Netherlands, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, North Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Finland, Poland and South Korea. 辛麗麗,1979年於上海市舞蹈學校畢業,主修芭 蕾舞科,同年進入上海芭蕾舞團,任主要舞者。

2000年獲委任為舞團副藝術總監,2001年晉升 為藝術總監。自2011年起擔任舞團團長。

擔任主要舞者期間,曾在多部著名芭蕾舞劇 中領銜演出。表演高雅抒情,風格純淨,在國內 外都廣獲好評。2010年6月,獲邀參加英國國家 芭蕾舞團成立六十周年演出,在《天鵝湖》中飾 演母后的角色。

擔任上海芭蕾舞團藝術總監和團長期間, 辛麗麗引進了經典芭蕾舞劇《天鵝湖》(戴歷. 甸)、《吉賽爾》(馬利斯.佩蒂巴)和《柯碧莉 亞》(皮埃.拉科特),並製作《花樣年華》(伯 特蘭.德阿特)、《馬可.波羅──最後的使命》 (約瑟.馬天尼斯)等多部原創作品。她同時培育 了無數人才,包括范曉楓、孫慎逸、季萍萍、吳 虎生、戚冰雪等屢獲國際芭蕾舞大賽獎項的一流 舞者。

Xin Lili

Xin Lili graduated from the Shanghai Dance School in 1979, majoring in Ballet, and joined the Shanghai Ballet the same year as a Principal Dancer. In 2000, Xin was appointed Artistic Associate of the Shanghai Ballet and Artistic Director the next year. She has served as Director of the Shanghai Ballet since September 2011.

With a graceful and lyrical temperament, Xin has shined on stage at home and abroad with principal roles in many well-known productions. In June 2010, she was invited to attend the 60th anniversary of the English National Ballet and performed as the Queen in Swan Lake.

As Artistic Director and then Director of the Shanghai Ballet, Xin introduced the classical ballets Swan Lake (Derek Deane), Giselle (Marius Petipa) and Copellia (Pierre Lacorte), and produced A Sigh of Love (Bertrand d’ At) and The Last Mission of Marco Polo (Jose Martinez). She also trained many topnotch ballet stars such as Fan Xiaofeng, Sun Shenyi, Ji Pingping, Wu Husheng and Qi Bingxue, who have won many awards at international ballet competitions.

She has served on the juries of the Shanghai International Ballet Competition, the Beijing International Dance Competition, Prix Benois de la Danse and the New York International Ballet Competition, among many others.

輕快的爵士樂舞曲下,百樂門舞廳衣香鬢 影,王太太與李先生各自的另一半卻在忘 情共舞,四人捲進情感暗湧。這是上海芭 蕾舞團《花樣年華》的一段舞碼,舞劇與 電影《花樣年華》(2000年)同名,不過 背景換成上世紀三四十年代的老上海,以 芭蕾舞呼出對逝去年華的歎息。

Against a backdrop of light jazz music and well-dressed couples in Shanghai’s iconic Paramount Ballroom, Mr Wang’s and Mrs Li’s partners dance together, obviously engrossed with each other. This pivotal scene in the Shanghai Ballet’s dance theatre production A Sigh of Love leads to an upheaval in the characters’ respective marriages and propels the plot forward. Although the title and storyline echo that of the influential Hong Kong film In the Mood for Love (2000), the performance is set in Shanghai in the 1930s to 1940s, and uses ballet to take viewers back to a bygone era.

重現老上海民生

原創海派芭蕾舞劇《花樣年華》早於2006 年首演,國內外巡演多年,終於在2024年來 到香港藝術節演出。此劇最初由上海芭蕾舞 團與法國藝術家共同創作,邀請了上海戲劇 學院教授曹路生撰寫文本及舞台本,並由已 故法國編舞家伯特蘭・ 德阿特任編舞。故事 脈絡雖然與電影《花樣年華》近似,講述兩 對夫婦與對方伴侶出軌的曖昧故事,但團長 辛麗麗指,舞劇呈現的是老上海氣息,「每個 人的人生都有一段花樣年華的時間……這舞 劇展示了老上海的風情,也演繹了男女主角 愛但無緣的淒美。」

為了帶觀眾「穿越」老上海,來自法國 的創作團隊,包括編舞、舞美及服裝設計師 和燈光設計師,足足花了三年時間研究,到 訪上海不同的歷史檔案館,翻查時人生活細 節。從第一幕群舞便足見創作團隊的工夫— —極具上海特色的歷史建築石庫門外熙來攘 往,數十位舞者穿梭街頭,他們穿旗袍、長 衫、洋裙或西裝,有人力車夫、修女,也有 路邊買菜的、搖扇納淡的街坊,編舞憑細微 動作和衣著,仔細刻畫當時不同職業、階層 的民生日常。

Illuminating people’s lives in old Shanghai

After its early premiere in 2006 and touring performances in China and overseas, A Sigh of Love is finally coming to the Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2024. The production was originally co-created by the Shanghai Ballet and a team of French artists. It is based on a text and stage script written by Cao Lusheng, a Professor of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, and was choreographed and directed by French choreographer Bertrand d’At (1957–2014). The dance theatre’s storyline is similar to that of the film In the Mood for Love, which narrates the affairs between two married couples, but Director of the Shanghai Ballet Xin Lili says it presents the atmosphere of old Shanghai. “There is a flourishing youth in every life This dance theatre showcases the flavour of old Shanghai as well as the tragic romance between the male and female protagonists who are fated to be apart,” Xin explains.

To transport the audience back to old Shanghai, members of the French creative team, including the choreographer, and scenery, costume and lighting designers, spent up to three years conducting research, exploring Shanghai’s various historical archives and examining how people lived in the city back then. And the very first scene of group dancing reveals the fruits of the creative team’s efforts. In this scene, dozens of dancers bustle around the street in front of a shikumen, a traditional Shanghainese building that combines Western and Chinese elements. Dressed in costumes such as qipaos, tunics, dresses and suits, the dancers play rickshaw pullers, nuns, grocery shoppers on the street and fan-waving neighbours. Through the use of the dancers’ delicate movements and period costumes, the choreographer intricately portrays how people of different occupations and classes lived their lives in old Shanghai.

為旗袍編舞

當中最能代表時代的,非旗袍莫屬。穿 着旗袍來跳芭蕾舞,聽來不可思議。辛麗麗 指,法國服裝設計師鑽研了中國近百年的旗 袍演變,細如領口、衣袖、圖案設計等,特 別為舞者設計了高衩的旗袍舞衣,「旗袍是當 時上海人的服飾,已婚婦女的、少女的、也 有家境不好沒太講究的旗袍。」如李太太所穿 的旗袍,裙擺一半是摺疊式的,一半開衩, 方便舞動。

舞團副團長兼飾演男主角李先生的吳虎 生說,當年首演,內地從未有一套芭蕾舞劇 是穿着旗袍來演出,由於編舞事前會先觀察 女主角穿着旗袍的舞姿,故很多芭蕾舞動作 都是根據旗袍樣式來設計,連抬腿角度都調 校得非常細緻,避免一些尷尬角度。

飾演女主角王太太的首席主要舞者戚冰 雪自言,《花》劇是她首次穿着旗袍跳芭蕾 舞,為了演得傳神,她看了不少老電影,觀 察當時女性穿旗袍的體態,但最初穿着旗袍 式排練服也花了些時間適應,她笑道:「對芭 蕾舞者,平時都是大手大腳的,穿了旗袍突 然變得很拘束,但編舞很符合我們穿上旗袍 後的動作形態,所以後來覺得跳起來滿有味 道。」

舞出含蓄情感

吳虎生飾演《花》劇的男主角李先生, 一演便十七年。當年他首次擔當芭蕾舞劇男 主角,感覺猶如與角色一起成長,愈能發現 編舞的心思。他舉例指,劇中有多段王太太 與李先生的雙人舞,二人有不少相反的動 作,「藉以表達主角的精神狀態,有時是擦肩 而過,有時二人身體不是向同一方向,但他 們的心已經互相吸引,這也是芭蕾藝術吸引 的地方,給予觀眾很多想像空間。」

Choreography for the qipao

The qipao is the most representative outfit of the era, but it’s not exactly the most practical outfit for ballet dancers. According to Xin, the French costume designers closely studied how China’s qipao dresses had evolved during the past century—including features such as the collar, sleeves and pattern design—and created dresses with high slits for the dancers. Xin says: “The qipao was the quintessential Shanghainese outfit at that time, with different designs for married women and young girls as well as those who were not well-off.” For example, the qipao worn by Mrs Li was designed with one folded side and one slit side to make it easier to dance in.

Wu Husheng, Vice-Director of the Shanghai Ballet and the dancer who plays the lead male character Mr Li, says mainland China had never seen ballet dancers wearing qipaos before the ballet production premiered. He added that as the choreographer studied how the female protagonist danced and moved in a qipao before choreographing the ballet, many ballet movements were designed around the limitations of the dress—even the angles of leg lifts were carefully adjusted to avoid any embarrassment.

Qi Bingxue, First Principal Dancer of the Shanghai Ballet and the performer of the lead female role Mrs Wang, says she first danced in a qipao while performing in A Sigh of Love. She reveals that she watched numerous old films to study how women moved in qipaos at the time in order to perform more vividly, and that she became used to wearing a qipaostyle outfit during rehearsals. Qi smiles and explains: “The dancers who were used to making big movements in ballet productions were suddenly constrained by their qipao outfits. Still, the choreography was well adapted to the movements and gestures of dancers wearing qipaos, so the dance feels vibrant.”

Dance with subtle emotions

Wu has now played the lead male character, Mr Li, in A Sigh of Love for 17 years. The character was Wu’s first male role in ballet theatre, and playing the role has contributed to his artistic growth as well as providing a key to understanding how a choreographer thinks. For example, he mentions the recurring scenes of pas de deux performed by Mrs Wang and Mr Li, in which they move in opposite directions: “To illustrate the protagonists’ mental states, sometimes they pass by each other, and sometimes their bodies move in different directions, but all along they are attracted to each other. That is what makes the art of ballet attractive and provides room for the audience’s imagination.”

The female protagonist wearing the qipao makes many unforgettable movements, and despite being constrained in a tight costume, she projects an image of grace while being metaphorically chained up.

The male and female protagonists are engaged in a tug-ofwar between emotion and reason, and the audience is able to feel these subtle sentiments despite a lack of dialogue. A Sigh of Love was a test of the actors’ determination because the dances were arranged according to the storyline, in which the protagonists gradually experience strangeness, familiarity and a fleeting relationship. “To handle these emotions, the

男女主角若即若離,為感情與理智角 力,即使沒有對白,觀眾仍能感受那含蓄的 情緒。「《花》劇很考驗舞者的定力,因為舞 段從故事角度出發,男女主角由陌生、到試 探、到熟悉,再短暫在一起。舞者處理都要 很多耐心,不能操之過急……我們演出也像 說故事一樣,跳完一段,我的情緒也隨人物 釋懷,感受孤獨,體會悲傷。」吳虎生道。

這舞劇已巡演十七年,但舞團依然追求 創新,在2023年初便曾移師石庫門實境演 出。在上海土生土長的吳虎生說,雖然香港 觀眾不是在實境觀賞,但相信仍能把觀眾帶 進故事中。王太太和李先生兩家居住的是上 海歷史建築石庫門,出入的娛樂場所是1933 年開業至今的百樂門舞廳。而舞劇音樂多元 化,中樂演奏《帝女花》的〈香夭〉、周璇唱 的國語流行曲《花樣的年華》、古典音樂如貝 多芬的四重奏等等,襯托着李先生與王太太 的悲歡離合;同時,舞蹈設計糅合了古典芭 蕾、現代芭蕾、民族舞、爵士舞等等不同舞 種,透露着上海在那個年代的開放與前衛。

dancers must be very patient… We acted as if we were telling a story. Whenever I finished a dance, I felt the character’s emotions, undergoing relief, loneliness and grief,” says Wu.

Although the dance theatre performance has toured for 17 years, the Shanghai Ballet still pursues innovation in A Sigh of Love and even staged the show in a real shikumen building in early 2023. Wu, who was born and raised in Shanghai, says that even though the Hong Kong audience will not experience the show in such a unique venue, festivalgoers will still become absorbed in the story. Mrs Wang and Mr Li live in a shikumen, a historical building in Shanghai, and the entertainment venue they visit is the Paramount Ballroom, which opened in 1933. And the music adds further to the immersion, with the show featuring period tunes such as Double Suicide from Princess Changping, played on traditional Chinese instruments; the Mandarin pop song An Era Like Flowers by Zhou Xuan; and classical works of Beethoven. All of these speak of the joy and sorrow Mr Li and Mrs Wang experience when they get together and then break up. Meanwhile, the choreography combines different forms of dance such as classical ballet, modern ballet, folk dance and jazz dance, revealing how liberal and advanced Shanghai was during that era.

編舞 伯特蘭.德阿特 伯特蘭.德阿特生於1957年。先於法國第戎市音 樂學院學習舞蹈,1974年到比利時布魯塞爾,在 莫里斯.貝嘉的默德拉學校進修。

1978年,他加入貝嘉的二十世紀芭蕾舞團。

從1984至1991年,他先後擔任二十世紀芭蕾舞 團和瑞士洛桑貝嘉芭蕾舞團的芭蕾舞大師。

1993年,他獲委任為瑞典加爾堡芭蕾舞團的 聯合藝術總監。1996年,他創立自己的伊斯特芭 蕾舞團。1997年5月,他獲任命為萊茵國家歌劇 院的舞蹈總監,以及其芭蕾舞團的藝術總監。

Choreographer Bertrand d’ At (1957-2014)

Born in 1957, Bertrand d’At started his dance studies at the Dijon Conservatory in France before joining Maurice Béjart’s Mudra school in Brussels in 1974.

In 1978 he joined Béjart’s Ballet du XXe siècle as a dancer and performed in ballets. From 1984-91, he worked as Ballet Master for the Ballet du XXe siècle, and then for the Béjart Ballet Lausanne.

In 1993, he was appointed as Co-Artistic Director of the Cullberg Ballet in Sweden before founding his own company, Ballet Est, in 1996. In May 1997, he was appointed to the position of Dance Director in the Opéra national du Rhin and Artistic Director of its dance company.

D’At started to choreograph in 1984 and his works include Prokofiev’s Roméo and Juliet (Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin, 1990) and The Prince of the Pagodas (Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin, 2002).

Playwright Cao Lusheng

Cao Lusheng is a professor at the Shanghai Theatre Academy and a former deputy editor of Theatre Arts at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. As a famous playwright, his representative modern drama works include Quatre-Vingt-Treize, Red Poppies, Zhuang Zhou’s Trying His Wife, To Be or Not to Be/Who Killed the King, The Gadfly, Sun Yat-sen, Master Hongyi and Jade Zen Master. He has received various awards, including the Wenhua Award and the National Stage Excellent Project Screenplay Award.

Lighting Designer Oliver Oudiou

Oliver Oudiou was born in the outer suburbs of Paris, France, and received his Bachelor’s degree in Drama Studies from the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in 1987. From 1988-89, he studied lighting design at ISTS in Avignon, France.

He started working on productions in 1990 and his credits include Le Quatuor d’Alexandrie, Don Quichotte, Antoine and Cleopatra, The True Story of the Périchole and Le Révizor.

Scenery, Costume Designer Jérôme Kaplan

Jérôme Kaplan studied stage decoration at the Ecole de la Rue Blanche until 1987. After that he designed costumes and decor for a number of theatrical productions including Rossini’s Barber of Seville, Massenet’s Don Quichotte and Vivaldi’s Montezuma (all three operas directed by Ariel Garcia Valdes).

Since 1991, he has created sets and costumes for numerous ballets with Jean-Christophe Maillot and les Ballets de Monte Carlo (including L’enfant et Jes Sortilèges, Romeo and Juliet and Cendrillon) and with Zhang Yimou and Xin Peng Wang (Raise The Red Lantern for the National Ballet of China in Beijing) and Bertrand d’At (The Prince of Pagodas and Le chant de la terre for the Strasbourg Opera).

Wu Husheng graduated from the Shanghai Dance School in 2003 and joined the Shanghai Ballet in the same year. He won the gold medal in the men’s group and the Igor Youskevitch Award at the ninth New York International Ballet Competition, the gold medal in the men’s youth group at the fourth Shanghai International Ballet Competition, the Gold Medal for Dance Drama and Dance Poem at the ninth China Dance Lotus Awards, and the Dance Drama Award at the 10th China Dance Lotus Awards. His repertoire includes principal roles in nearly 20 full-length productions such as The White-Haired Girl, Swan Lake and Hamlet. Additionally, he joined different projects as a choreographer. With Follow the Light, he received the awards of creation and performance, as well as Excellent Work of the 14th National Dance Exhibition.

Qi Bingxue graduated from the Shanghai Dance School and joined the Shanghai Ballet in 2014. She was promoted to First Principal Dancer in 2023. She has danced all principal roles in productions including The White-Haired Girl, Coppelia, Giselle, The Last Mission of Marco Polo, A Sigh of Love, Swan Lake, Le Fantôme de l’Opéra (Derek Deane), The Lady of the Camellias (Shanghai Ballet version, Derek Deane), and more.

She has received various awards including Rising Leading Dancer at the 30th Shanghai Magnolia Awards, the top awards at the third Beijing International Ballet and Choreographer Competition, the Gold Award at the fifth Shanghai International Ballet Competition, and the 10th China Dance Lotus Awards, among others.
