第五十一屆香港藝術節隆重舉行,可 喜可賀。

逾半個世紀以來,藝術節每年均呈獻 多姿多彩的文藝節目,由古典音樂、 歌劇、戲劇,以至舞蹈、多媒體項 目等,包羅萬有,令觀眾大飽眼福。

今屆藝術節以《收音機與茱麗葉》及 《春之祭》芭蕾舞表演揭開序幕,兩 齣經典作品經由著名編舞家愛德華· 克魯格重新編排,加上斯洛文尼亞 國家歌劇院馬里博爾芭蕾舞團傾力演 出,萬眾矚目;約五星期後,歐洲頂 尖交響樂團—德國班貝格交響樂團將 登台獻技,為今年藝術節畫上圓滿句 號。其間上演的焦點節目還有: 國 際星級女高音安娜·涅翠柯與丈夫男 高音尤西夫·伊瓦佐夫聯袂表演的音 樂會;由藝術家威廉·肯特里奇精心 製作、南非木偶劇團和比利時里切卡 爾古樂團奇妙演繹的蒙特威爾第歌劇 《尤利西斯歸鄉記》;由芭蕾天后娜塔 麗亞·奧斯波娃領銜主演的芭蕾巨 星之《「世」不可擋》及傳奇舞姬之 《趾尖》;以及國際鋼琴大賽冠軍劉曉 禹的演奏會。

藝術節向來十分重視本地演藝人才, 致力讓他們一展才華。今屆藝術節亦 會上演多個粵劇節目,包括《竹林愛 傳奇》、「毛俊輝.粵劇情」、《畫皮》 (精新版),以及「短篇粵劇—戲說 八德」; 並帶來其他本地作品,包括 《飯戲攻心》踏台版、《末戀.無愛合 約》、舞蹈歌劇《兩生花》等等,定 必精彩萬分,不容錯過。

大眾還可通過藝術節,體驗繽紛的藝 術魅力。法國食蟻獸沉浸式藝術工作 室創作的《第一步》,會邀請觀眾互 動共舞;在大館舉行的一系列免費藝 術科技節目,以及「無限亮」計劃, 亦會讓公眾參與其中。「無限亮」計 劃由本地和海外不同能力的藝術家擔 綱演出,鼓勵青少年衝破界限,探索

行政長官的話 MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

I would like to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 51st edition.

For more than half a century now, the Arts Festival has enthralled audiences with a superb annual programme of arts and culture performances embracing classical music and opera, theatre, dance, multimedia and a great deal more.

This year’s Arts Festival programme opens with the Slovene National Theatre Maribor’s ballet performances of Radio and Juliet and Le Sacre du Printemps, two classics re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Edward Clug. It closes, nearly five weeks later, with a concert by Germany’s Bamberg Symphony, one of Europe’s greatest orchestras. Other highlights include Anna Netrebko, one of the world’s great sopranos, performing with her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov; artist William Kentridge’s remarkable production of Monteverdi’s opera, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, brought to life by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and Belgium’s Ricercar Consort periodinstrument ensemble; Ballet Superstars’ Force of Nature and Legendary Ballerina

in Two Feet featuring supreme ballerina Natalia Osipova; and concerts by the international award-winning piano virtuoso Bruce Liu.

As always, the Festival shines a spotlight on standout artists from Hong Kong. This year’s Cantonese opera offerings include Love in the Bamboo Grove, Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, The Painted Skin (Refined Edition) and Virtues and Morality—Four Cantonese Operas. Local productions including Table For Six on Stage, Loveless Romance and Love Streams are sure to be among this year’s Festival highlights.

Several programmes invite public participation as well, including the First Steps participatory dance performances staged by France’s Tamanoir Immersive Studio, as well as Tai Kwun’s free series of arts tech productions and the Festival’s No Limits programme, led by local and international artists of varying abilities. No Limits’ offerings emphasise youth exploration, as does the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival with its school tours, preperformance workshops and special programming. And then there is the Festival PLUS creative activities that bring artists and audiences together in communities throughout Hong Kong.

I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its inspired commitment to the arts and to Hong Kong’s continuing rise as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. My thanks, as well, to the Festival’s many generous sponsors and donors.

I am delighted to welcome you to the 51st edition of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. As the city recovers from the disruption of the pandemic, the Festival is returning with an array of live performances featuring top-notch artists from Hong Kong and across the world. Despite the boundless possibilities offered by the internet, attending performances in person remains an irreplaceable experience. It gives me great pleasure to share this collective experience with you today.

The Festival is made possible by the generosity of our supporters.

I wish to thank the HKSAR Government, via the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, for the annual subvention which underpins our long-standing work. I am also grateful for the ongoing contributions from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, as well as corporate sponsors, charitable foundations and individual donors. My sincere thanks go

to the participating artists for their dedication to bringing the best to our audiences, especially those returning after previous cancellations due to the pandemic.

On behalf of the Festival team, I would like to extend to you a heartfelt welcome to the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Our theme this year, “Coming Back, Moving Forward”, represents our determination to come back in full force after several years of uncertainties caused by the pandemic. After five decades of hard work and dedication, the Festival has established itself as a premier arts event in the region and an important international arts festival. We are honoured to carry this legacy forward, while advancing our multifaceted work to stay relevant in the present. In the 51st edition, we discover creative voices through new renditions of masterpieces, cross-disciplinary collaborations and commissioned productions— all of which showcase the breadth and endless possibilities of the performing arts, taking us one step

forward in this journey of exploration. Beyond exceptional performances, we are also offering a series of auxiliary PLUS programmes to enhance audience engagement and provide deeper insights into our programmes. Our strong commitment to arts education is seen in the extensive outreach activities aimed at inspiring the younger generation of Hong Kong through promoting quality arts.

The Festival steps into the second half of its first centenary with both optimism and renewed courage to bravely face the great challenges ahead. I hope you will stay close with us and be inspired by what the Festival has to offer.

香港藝術節於 1973 年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的文化 盛事,於每年 2、 3 月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國際藝術家 的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育活動,致力豐 富香港的文化生活。

香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2022/ 23 財政年度預計收

入(包括第 51 屆香港藝術節及 2023 年「無限亮」)約港 幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔總收入約 18%,另外約 24%需來自票房收入,約 43%則需依賴來自 各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊助和捐款。預計餘 下的約 15%則來自其他收入,包括政府針對捐款和贊助收 入而提供的配對資助。

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2022/23 (including the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2023 “No Limits”) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 18% of the Festival's total income. Around 24% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 43% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. The HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres, such as*:

• Chinese opera: China National Peking Opera Company, Hebei Clapper Opera Troupe, Shanghai Zhang Jun Kunqu Art Center, Suzhou Kunqu Opera Company of Jiangsu, Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family – A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina

成立 30 年來,已為逾 810, 000 位本地中學生及大專生提供 藝術體驗活動。藝術節近年亦開展多項針對大、中、小學 生的藝術教育活動,包括由國際及本地藝術家主持的示範 講座及工作坊、學生展演、演前講座、公開彩排、以及欣 賞藝術節演出。同時,通過「學生票捐助計劃」,藝術節 每年提供約 10, 000 張半價學生票。

香港藝術節每年主辦一系列多元化並深入社區的「加料節 目」,例如電影放映、示範講座、大師班、工作坊、座談 會、後台參觀、展覽、藝人談、文化導賞團等,鼓勵觀眾 與藝術家互動接觸。

2019 年正式開展,透過一系列的演出及多元的 教育及社區外展節目,「無限亮」致力創造共融空間,讓不 同能力人士均可以一同欣賞、參與、擁抱藝術。

Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake co-commissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera.

The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 30 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 810,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.

The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

The HKAF actively promotes inclusiveness and understanding via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

The HKAF officially launched the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation in 2022 to provide greater financial security and longterm sustainability for the Festival. Donations to the Foundation will help the Festival to present large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for. (2023

《蕭紅》與《兩個女子》都是成 熟的歌劇作品,由二者所衍生 的《兩生花》重在詩意。

舞蹈的作用是將劇中的寫實抽 象化、將人物的情感視覺化, 令表演在現實與虛幻、真實與 想像之間遊走,詩意地呈現主 題和意義。正如意珩所言:「生 命是有答案的。找到它,可以

串連愛與靈魂。」愛與靈魂是 看不見、摸不到的,卻需要面 對,這是存在的意義。

表演者,在這個演出是幸運 的,因為有思想深邃的劇本作 為依歸,有澎湃洶湧、細膩 委婉的音弦動律為指引,他們 可以完全投入演出。如何將 歌者、舞者、演奏者共冶一 爐,共襄盛舉,是我的挑戰; 而能夠參與這個製作,也是我 的幸運。

我相信表演不外乎「情動於中 而形於言,言之不足,故嗟嘆 之; 嗟嘆之不足,故詠歌之; 詠歌之不足,不知手之舞之, 足之蹈之也。」古語已有之, 我盡力實踐。

Heart of Coral and Women Like Us, two previously developed operas, have now been recreated and combined into the heavily poetic Love Streams.

Dance serves to obscure the realistic elements of the operas and visualise the emotions of the characters. It enables the performance itself to wander between reality and fantasy, and to cruise along the existing and the imagined. After all, the themes and meanings are conveyed in a way that resembles the aesthetic quality of poetry. Just like how librettist Yi Heng said: “There is always an answer to life. Once it is discovered, the heart and the soul can unite as one.” We are all born to constantly and inevitably turn towards the invisible and intangible love and spirit: the quest for a meaningful life.

Grounded on stage by a thoughtfully conceived script comprised of deep thoughts and led by undulating tones of surging, subtle and delicate music, the performers can fully immerse themselves into the play. Finding synergy among the singers, dancers and performers in a grand ensemble is more than a challenge, but I am proud to have been given the task.

“Emotion moves within and takes shape in words. Words are not enough, and so one sighs it. Sighing is not enough, and so one chants it out in songs. Chanting is not enough, and so unknowingly one’s hands dance

it and one’s feet tread it.” The Book of Poetry from thousands of years ago sums it all up. I believe this describes the true essence of performance and I strive to interpret it.

Winner of two Hong Kong Dance Awards in 2003 and 2006 for his outstanding dance performances, and awarded Best Artist (Dance) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2009, Yang Yuntao is an accomplished dancer and choreographer. He joined Hong Kong Dance Company in 2002 as Principal Dancer. He was the Company’s Assistant Artistic Director from 2007 and has been its Artistic Director since November 2013.

Yang has choreographed for various dance companies. His award-winning choreography credits for the HKDC include Spring Ritual—Eulogy, winner of Outstanding Achievement in Production at the 2013 Hong Kong Dance Awards and presented in Beijing and Taipei in 2013; The Legend of Mulan, winner of Outstanding Production and Outstanding Ensemble Performance at the 2014 Hong Kong Dance Awards and presented in New York and Sydney in 2015, London in 2017 and Minsk in 2019; Storm Clouds, winner of three awards at the 2015 Hong Kong Dance Awards; L’Amour Immortel, winner of three awards at the 2016 Hong Kong

Dance Awards and presented in Beijing, Guangzhou, Taipei, Shanghai and Hangzhou from 2017 to 2019; Waiting Heart, winner of the 2019 Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Medium Venue Production; and Convergence, winner of the 2022 Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Online Production. 故事大綱 WOMEN LIKE US SYNOPSIS

兩個背景不同的女子,帶着各自的愛情困境相遇。魚因為世俗期望 與自己不愛的丈夫結婚,婚後感冒久治不癒,終於決定尋找女子的 弟弟、魚的前男友楚,以求解開心結;女子身為殮容師,因為世人 對她職業的恐懼而失去朋友,她準備向男友夏坦白自己的職業,卻 又害怕夏會被嚇跑。

兩個女子觀照彼此的困局,面對來自社會的壓力,她們會怎樣在愛 情的舞台上勇敢活出真我?

Two women from different backgrounds; two encounters with love. Fish marries a man she doesn’t love just to please others. But after her marriage, her persistent cold refuses to get better. At last, she becomes determined to reunite with ex-boyfriend Chu to find happiness.

Woman, Chu’s older sister, is an undertaker’s cosmetologist. Because others fear her occupation, she has lost many friends. She is preparing to reveal her profession to her boyfriend, Hsia, but is afraid he will flee in fear. Woman and Fish bear witness to each other’s predicaments. Facing the pressures of society, how will they live their true selves on the stage of love?

西西,原名張彥,生於上海, 1950 年定居香港。據她自述, 筆名「西西」是象形字,像是 穿着裙子的女孩站在地上的 四方格,玩童年遊戲「跳飛 機」。她畢業於葛量洪教育學 院,隨後任職教師,並從事文 學創作,編寫電影劇本。1960 年代撰寫影評影介,達四百多 篇。四十二歲提早退休,專注 寫作、研究。數十年來出版新 詩、散文、長短篇小說和電影 評論等四十多種。《兩個女子》 即改編自她著作的短篇〈像我 這樣的一個女子〉和〈感冒〉。

西西的寫作手法瑰麗多變,往 往一篇一貌,對文壇影響深 遠,且獲獎無數,備受港內外 推崇,包括 2000 年星洲日報舉 辦之「花蹤世界華文文學獎」; 2009 年長篇《我城》獲《亞洲 週刊》評為二十世紀全球華文 小說 100 強;2019 年,獲美國 紐曼華語文學獎,同年底並獲 瑞典蟬文學獎,是首位得這兩 獎的香港作家。2022 年,獲香 港藝術發展局頒發終身成就獎。

Xi Xi (1937-2022) was born Zhang Yan in Shanghai and relocated to Hong Kong in 1950. The character “Xi” in her pen name is a pictogram that resembles a girl in a dress playing hopscotch on a square grid. After graduating from Grantham College of Education, Xi Xi worked as a teacher and started her literary journey by writing film scripts. By the 1960s she had released more than 400 film introductions and reviews. Retiring from her

day job at the age of 42, she started focusing on writing and research. During the following decades, Xi Xi published more than 40 publications of poems, essays, short fiction, novels and film critiques. Women Like Us is adapted from the writer’s famous short stories “A Girl Like Me” and “The Cold”.

Xi Xi’s multifaceted and kaleidoscopic writing style injects a genuine uniqueness into each composition throughout her broad repertoire, with a lasting influence on the world of literature. The multiaward-winning writer has long been highly regarded by local and international readers. Her most prized titles include the Huazhong World Chinese Literature Award by Sin Chew Daily in 2000; being included on the list of the Top 100 Chinese Novels of the 20th Century by Asia Weekly in 2009 (for My City); and becoming the first Hong Kong recipient of the Newman Prize for Chinese Literature and The Cikada Prize, both in 2019. In 2022, Xi Xi was granted the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

作曲家的話 Composer’s Note

2017 年有幸參與香港藝術節委 約創作的音樂會《世紀‧香 港》,自此我便致力創作糅合 香港文學和音樂的演出,特別 是以華語或廣東話演唱的聲樂 作品。以粵語演唱的作品為數 不少,包括流行曲、音樂劇和 合唱作品,但用傳統西方美聲 唱法( bel canto )演出的粵語 作品卻絕無僅有,更遑論以粵 語演唱的歌劇。用香港人的母 語(粵語)寫一套以本地文學 為靈感的歌劇,是我近年的一 個夢想。

《兩個女子》的故事有很多不 同的情緒表達,包括甜蜜的戀 愛回憶、面對未來的擔憂和掙 扎、興高采烈的婚宴場合、 渴望被諒解的心情等。為了 更有效地演繹不同情節,音 樂上我嘗試採取「兼收並蓄」 ( eclectic )的作曲方法,例如 把較前衛的無調性音樂和玩味 十足的仿古典片段共冶一爐。

博採眾家之餘,我希望整套歌 劇仍是一個有機的音樂作品, 能夠結合不同風格而不顯突兀。

《兩個女子》從構思到現在,長 達五年之久。由於疫情肆虐, 演出被逼數度延期,確實令人 十分無奈。不過我相信每部作 品都有它的生命和時間;作為一 個創作人,唯有盡自己最大的 努力完成作品,其他控制不到 的事情便不需要過份憂慮。

當大家閱讀這篇感言的時候, 相信歌劇終於可以在舞台上演 出——這便是最好的時間了。

Since my participation in Hong Kong Odyssey, a concert commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2017, I have been endeavouring to create performances that fuse Hong Kong literature with music, especially vocal pieces sung in Chinese or Cantonese. Cantonese pop songs, musicals and choral works are common, but Cantonese works performed in the bel canto (“beautiful singing”) traditional Western style are almost unknown, let alone operas sung in the language. Writing a Hong Kong literature-inspired and Cantonese-sung opera for the people of Hong Kong had not only come across my mind as an idea, but was an ambitious dream of mine in recent years.

Numerous emotions are expressed in Women Like Us, including splendid memories of romantic love, concerns about the future, high spirits at a wedding reception, and a desire to be understood and reconciled. Musically, I have attempted to experiment with an eclectic approach (using diverse styles in composition), for example by blending the more avant-garde non-tonal music with some whimsical faux-classical pieces, for a more distinguished effect in each section. It's a somewhat risky decision, but I intend the opera to be an organic ensemble of copious musical styles delivered in a subtle and unadorned manner.

Five years have passed since Women Like Us was conceived. The pandemic led to the show being postponed multiple times, which was frustrating. Even so, to my mind, every single work has its own life; each production has its own timeline. As a composer, all I need to do is to harness my energy during the creation process, and eliminate as much distress as possible about things that are beyond my control.

By the time you are reading this, the opera will finally be ready to be performed on stage. When could be the best time, if not now?

Daniel Lo Ting-cheung is one of the most active composers in Hong Kong, frequently commissioned by local music groups such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. Lo has won various prizes in international contests including first prizes at the seventh Musica e Arte Composition Contest and the third Migratory Journeys International Music Composition Competition.

Lo’s works cover a wide range of musical genres, from orchestral to vocal pieces. The past few years have seen the premieres of Autumn Rhythm for orchestra, commissioned by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta for its Asian tour in autumn 2019; and Poids for 10 instruments, written for Hong Kong New Music Ensemble’s tour of South Korea and Taiwan in spring 2019. One of Lo’s current compositional interests is to seek ways to integrate music with Hong Kong literature. Recent works inspired by contemporary local writers include the chamber opera Women Like Us; Mary’s Chalk Circle for narration, unaccompanied choir and video; and the semi-staged cantata The Banquet at el Bulli.

Lo completed his PhD (Composition) at the University of York in the UK in 2017, fully supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund. Previously, he studied composition at the University of Hong Kong where he graduated with first-class honours in 2009 and then earned an MPhil (Music Composition) in 2012.

Xi Xi’s two short stories, “A Girl Like Me” and “The Cold”, depict how two young women from different backgrounds live under others’ expectations and eventually find the courage to be themselves. Adapted from these two classical literary pieces in Hong Kong, Women Like Us was presented as a work-in-progress in 2019, premiered online in 2021, and will be delivered to the audience as a danceopera in 2023. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has been with us on this journey: whether they are the cast and crew on and off the stage, or our dearest audience. As we created this dance-opera over the past few years, the characters became my best friends, helping me through various challenges in life. When Chu sings of his unchanging love for Fish, he reminds her that “There are times to be brave, and times to rest”. When Fish bravely decides to pursue her freedom and follow her heart, she was indeed “Surging ahead; Surging toward the light” with only her beautiful singing voice as company. When Girl understands that “The scent of lilies wafts through funeral halls or living rooms; It’s not the lilies’ fault”, she no longer needs validation from others to know her self-worth. I found courage and hope through these characters, and hope that the performance also brings the audience strength as we all surge towards the light.

Composer Daniel Lo and I were brought together by Xi Xi and Women Like Us. We often consulted Xi Xi when producing the work, hoping that we could preserve the spirit of its original. But at the same time, we hope to incorporate into the work our perception of the world as young creators, giving the characters a voice to sing of the contemporary times and matters relevant across times, genders, and nations. Xi Xi always made sure not to give us any pressure before the performances and left us room and freedom for creation. As lyricists writing an adaptation, it was a blessing to have her trust. We deeply regret having to bid farewell to her at the end of 2022. Although she cannot enjoy the performance in person, I have no doubt that she is watching from above and telling us her thoughts. Let’s pay tribute to Xi Xi through this performance.

Wong Yi is an award-winning Hong Kong writer, librettist, radio show host, and editor at Fleurs des Lettres.  In 2020, she was named one of 20 Young Sinophone Novelists to Watch by the Taiwanese literary magazine Unitas. She is the author of four short story collections: Ways To Love In A Crowded City (2021), The Four Seasons of Lam Yip (2019), Patched Up (2015), and News Stories (2010). She was the Hong Kong Writer-in-Residence for Hong Kong Baptist University's first Chinese Writers Workshop in 2021, and has participated in events such as the Singapore Writers Festival, Singapore Book Fair, Hong Kong International Literary Festival, and Taipei International Book Exhibition.

Her collaborative work with artists from other disciplines includes participation in the Los Angeles Architecture Exhibition Island__Peninsula organised by The Hong Kong Institute of Architects in 2019, writing the libretto for the Cantoneselanguage chamber opera Women Like Us (commissioned and produced by the Hong Kong Arts Festival, premiered in May 2021), and writing an original text for the multimedia concert The Happy Family.

HEART OF CORAL SYNOPSIS

故事從遙遠的中國北方——呼蘭縣說起,戰火當中,一名女子渡過 短暫而轟烈的一生。

蕭紅因逃婚而邂逅蕭軍,而首部小說《生死場》亦獲魯迅關注,正 當蕭紅沉醉於幸福之際,命運卻和她開了個玩笑——與蕭軍的感情 觸礁、魯迅病重去世。頭一次,她清醒地感到自己的孤單,最終, 懷孕的蕭紅獨自去了香港。曾經逃離的故鄉變成她記憶裏唯一的歸 處,促使她寫下《呼蘭河傳》。淺水灣畔,病弱的蕭紅帶着身體和 內心的傷痕,等待黎明到來,生命在催促她終結。

This is a story about a woman who spends her short but brilliant life in turbulent times. It begins in faraway Hulan County, northern China, where a young Xiao Hong grows up.

After she flees from an arranged marriage, Xiao Hong meets the love of her life, Xiao Jun, and wins over the literary giant, Lu Xun, with her novel The Field of Life and Death. This happiness doesn’t last long— her relationship with Xiao Jun starts to go south, and Lu Xun, her beloved mentor, passes away abruptly, leaving her in tatters. Now pregnant and alone in the unfamiliar city of Hong Kong, memories of her homeland that she so desperately wanted to leave behind have become her only refuge, which leads to her magnum opus, Tales of Hulan River. In Repulse Bay, a wasted Xiao Hong awaits dawn and her demise in peace.

蕭紅,原名張廼瑩,1911 年生 於黑龍江呼蘭縣,幼年喪母。 1930 年為抗婚而離家出走,其 後在魯迅等作家的幫助下開始 創作,並於 1935 年出版成名作 小說《生死場》。當時中國正 值抗日戰爭時期,日軍佔領了 蕭紅的家鄉呼蘭,以及她求學 的地方哈爾濱。為逃避戰火, 蕭紅開始了流亡和寫作生涯, 輾轉到過青島、上海、武漢、 臨汾、西安、重慶等地。1940 年,因戰爭關係飛抵香港,在 貧病中寫完小說《馬伯樂》和 代表作《呼蘭河傳》。1941 年 病逝,年僅三十一歲,葬於香 港淺水灣。

鄉土和女性是蕭紅筆下的兩個 重要命題,她的作品多描述鄉 土的民情風俗,以及女性的生 活困迫。她與張愛玲同列「民 國四大才女」,並獲著名作家魯 迅評為「當今中國最有前途的 女作家」。

Xiao Hong was born Zhang Naiying in 1911 in Hulan District, Heilongjiang Province and lost her mother at a young age. In 1930, Xiao Hong fled from an arranged marriage and attempted a literature career with the support of Lu Xun and other writers. Her debut novel and defining success, The Field of Life and Death, was conceived in 1935. Xiao Hong’s budding career coincided with the Second Sino-Japanese War, as Hulan and Harbin—where she grew up and studied—were both occupied by Japan. Xiao Hong escaped the battlefields and lived as a writer in exile, branching a circuitous route from Qingdao to Shanghai, Wuhan, Linfen, Xi’an and Chongqing. In 1940, she found shelter in Hong Kong and while dealing with illness and poverty she finished writing two novels, Ma Bole and Tales of Hulan River, the latter regarded as her masterpiece. Xiao died in 1941 at the age of 31 and was buried in Repulse Bay.

Xiao Hong’s writing deals with the key themes of identity and femininity. Her work often portrays the folklore and customs of her countryside hometown, while at the same time highlighting the harsh conditions of women’s lives. Along with Eileen Chang, Xiao Hong was celebrated as one of “the big four talented women in the Republic of China”, and praised by Lu Xun as “the most promising female writer in China nowadays”.

為何要重寫《蕭紅》?

Why Rewrite Heart of Coral?

有這麼一個說法: 寫過歌劇的 作曲家,從此不再一樣。從 2013 年的《蕭紅》起,這十年 間,我完成了四齣華語歌劇, 《兩生花》裏全新版本的《蕭 紅》會是第五齣。

為何要重寫《蕭紅》?《兩生 花》用上較大型的樂隊,就算 音樂照舊,我也得重新配器。 更何況這十年間,除歌劇外, 我還創作了不少聲樂作品,逐 漸形成了自己的一套華語文本 入樂策略。因此,當香港藝術 節籌劃製作《兩生花》時,我 已決定重寫部份段落。原先的 想法是大概重寫三成,不料牽 一髮動全身,最後差不多重寫 了九成。

歌劇製作需投入大量資源,全 新創作的歌劇首演自然備受矚 目。耳朵從沒離開過浪漫樂派 的樂評人會問你為何沒有琅琅 上口的詠歎調; 唯西方馬首是 瞻的同行會認為你的樂風追不 上歐美的前衛歌劇; 抱文化純 粹主義的學者會批評你寫的不 是中國音樂。但這通通都不是 我關心的問題。

華語是單音節多聲調語言,為 其譜曲,既要遵從曲詞的聲調 起伏,又要不被其所困,談何 容易。每次面對劇本,我總是 戰戰兢兢,誠惶誠恐,真有字 詞如鐵,鍛句成鋼的感覺。這 趟重寫《蕭紅》也沒有例外。

一路走來,我當然不再是十年 前的我,頭髮白了不少,也少

了許多。總結經驗,我仍是那 句老話: 藝術創作,外人無從 置喙,得失寸心知。

There is a saying that the experience of writing an opera transforms a composer forever. Starting with Heart of Coral in 2013, I have completed four Chinese-language operas over the past 10 years. The new version of Heart of Coral in Love Streams will be the fifth.

Why rewrite Heart of Coral?

There’s a larger ensemble in Love Streams. Even if the music remains intact, I still have to redo the orchestration. Moreover, apart from operas, I have also composed many vocal works during the past 10 years, gradually codifying my set of strategies in setting Chinese texts to music. So, when the Hong Kong Arts Festival was planning the production of Love Streams, I had already decided to rewrite certain passages. My original plan was to amend about 30 per cent of the music. But the creative process took on its own momentum and eventually about 90 per cent of the score was altered.

Opera productions require a huge amount of resources, and for any new work, all eyes will be on the premiere. Music critics whose ears never left 19th-

century Romanticism might ask why there are no catchy arias; fellow composers who view the West as the bellwether for contemporary music might think that your style lags behind the Euro-American avant-garde; and scholars who embrace the ideology of cultural purism might accuse you of not writing Chinese music. But none of that matters to me.

The Chinese language features single syllables and multiple tones. When setting Chinese words to music, the composer must both adhere to the tonal inflections while avoiding being limited by them. This is tremendously challenging. Every libretto fills me with apprehension, as though I have to forge iron into steel while treading on eggshells. The current rewrite of Heart of Coral is no exception.

I have come a long way since starting my operatic journey. I am of course no longer the same composer I was 10 years ago. My hair is greyer, and there is less of it. To sum up the experience, my old saying endures: regarding artistic creation, outsiders have no say; success or failure, only the artist knows the best.

Chan Hing-yan is currently James Chen and Yuen-Han Chan Professor in Music at The University of Hong Kong.

Lauded for their subtle mediation between Chinese elements and Western idioms, Professor Chan’s compositions have been heard around the world at prestigious festivals. Recent works include four chamber operas (Kungfood 2021, Ghost Love 2018, Datong – the Chinese Utopia 2015, Heart of Coral 2013). The first two were commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival, who also entrusted Professor Chan as composer and Music Director of an extravaganza staged cantata Hong Kong Odyssey to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover in 2017. Professor Chan served as Artist Associate 2016-18 of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Over the years, the orchestra has commissioned and presented his works at home and abroad in Europe (2005), South America (2010), Canada, New York (2012), Taiwan (2016), Beijing (2010) and Shanghai (2007).

Professor Chan received the “Best Artist Award (Music)” at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2013. His three collaborations with the City Contemporary Dance Company (Dao Extraordinaire 2009, Warrior Lanling 2007, The Conqueror 2005) have won him much acclaim as well as a Hong Kong Dance Award in 2008, when he also received commendation for “Persons with Outstanding Contributions to the Development of Arts and Culture” in the Secretary for Home Affairs’ Commendation Scheme.

At HKU, Professor Chan was conferred the Outstanding Research Student Supervisor Award (2013-14), in recognition of his guidance to postgraduate students in the pursuit of research excellence. In addition, he has been an advisor to HKU’s Cultural Management Office since its inception in 2013, and has been instrumental in planning and delivering a number of innovative programmes for its MUSE series.

蕭紅是個特別的人物。

她既是一個對象,也是一個被 塑造的角色。

有人評論說她後期一些作品, 觸及了人性的隱秘之處。在我 看來,那不是一些人庸俗化的 欲望,而是一種大的、廣闊 的東西。

在很多傳記中,她總有一種自 我拋棄的感覺,可我覺得那是 她的求生,她很努力的想突破 一次,是反叛和自在的。人是 複雜的,一個人到底是甚麼樣 子,任君選看。

不想寫一個人的生平,也不願 意把她看成是一個悲劇,我只 想用我的語言切進她的獨自之 地,塑造這個女人更明滅更湧 動之處。

我希望透過這個作品,看到一 種生命的色彩。對蕭紅來說, 那是故鄉賦予她的性情、她的 恐懼和承擔、懵懂和追求。而 對其他更多的人,會看到一種 更有格局的內在精神——可以串 聯生命的答案。

我們每個人都是在各自的年限 裏完成同樣的東西。困惑、對 抗、接受、擁有、否定、失 去、重新面對生活……這整個 起伏,有的人說是掙扎,有的 人說叫爭取。

Xiao Hong was an exceptional person.

She was not only a character, but also a role model waiting to be moulded. I am loath to treat her story as a tragedy. That is my position.

Some critics depict her later works as touching upon the deepest secrets of the human psyche. To me, these are not common desires, but notions far larger and broader.

Much of her writing is shrouded by a sense of self-surrender, yet I detect a fervent desire for life: she strove to break through in her own maverick and carefree manner. Humans are complex by nature: it all depends on our perspectives and choices.

I’m wary of delineating a straightforward biography, because that does not qualify as artistic creation. And this work is not intended to be an ode to Xiao Hong. I only want to examine her and her alone, to wield words in shaping those brilliant and poignant facets belonging to her.

I hope that through this work, we can appreciate those very colours of life. For Xiao Hong, they comprise the temperaments, fears and responsibilities, as well as stubbornness and aspirations that her hometown and upbringing bequeathed her. Others might detect an inner

spirit within this structure. When strung together, an answer to life emerges.

All of us must complete prescribed tasks within our respective timespans. Doubt, resistance, acceptance, possession, rejection and loss, facing life anew, riding the ups and downs that mark existence... Some view them as struggles while others revel in grappling with them.

I must extend my heartfelt thanks to the Hong Kong Arts Festival, composer Chan Hingyan and director Yang Yuntao. It is my good fortune to have had the opportunity to work with you.

Inter - Generational Dialogue in a World of Dance and Opera

當香港舞蹈團藝術總監楊雲濤 收到香港藝術節邀請,想他把 兩部室內歌劇《蕭紅》( 2013 ) 與《兩個女子》( 2021 ),串成 一齣大型舞蹈歌劇《兩生花》, 還讓他擔當導演與編舞時, 他的確有點意外,畢竟他過去 跟香港藝術節沒甚麼交集; 但 再想想,又覺得沒那麼意想不 到,「其實香港舞蹈團包容性很 大,民間舞、芭蕾舞、現代舞 等等,不拘一格。《蕭紅》本來 就是一個中國女性的故事,西 西的小說也很當下,我們很適 合演繹這些作品。」

全音樂表現女性故事

《兩生花》是原創舞蹈歌劇,楊 雲濤也是首次接觸舞蹈歌劇, 但他曾為歌劇編舞,亦在舞蹈 上採用過歌劇音樂,又提到知 名德國現代舞編舞者翩娜.包 殊的作品常常採用歌劇音樂,

因此他對這種表演形式並不陌 生。作為一位編舞,楊雲濤認 為音樂是歌劇故事和畫面的基 調,亦是舞蹈的靈魂,「在《兩 生花》裏,舞者以身體、意 境、狀態來傳達音樂。」他就 像跟作曲家在同一空間對答, 「作曲家通過音樂佈下迷陣,我 就以舞蹈解碼。」

談到蕭紅和西西,楊雲濤坦言 不算是她們的讀者,但也曾拜 讀過二人的作品。而爲了這 次演出,他又仔細參詳了歌劇 《兩個女子》所取材的西西著作 〈像我這樣的一個女子〉和〈感 冒〉,「你必須帶着自己的經驗 去讀,才會明白西西文字的厲 害之處。她就是能把一些貌似 平凡、日常的事情,寫得不平 凡。」比起蕭紅,他覺得跟西 西的距離近一點,「畢竟大家都 活在同一城市、同一時空。」

他本來就對女性題材的創作很 感興趣,「以女性角度看世界, 更敏感、更富幻想、更能打破 邏輯,有趣得多。男性嘛,來 來去去都是追逐權力、名利、 金錢,好像很現實,反而很不 現實。」

楊雲濤曾於現場看過歌劇《蕭 紅》,故體會較深,「蕭紅就像 一朵最脆弱的鮮花,生於一個 最嚴苦的寒冬裏,卻因而長得 更艷麗燦爛。很難說是生不逢 時,抑或反而是最好的時代, 更顯得才華橫溢,讓大家永遠 記住那顆高貴的靈魂。」楊雲 濤認為《兩生花》其中一位作 曲家陳慶恩的音樂很有氣魄, 「把現代音樂與傳統樂器結合, 十分震撼。」既然描繪的是歷 史長河那種大格局,他編的舞 蹈較寫意,較不敘事,「留下多 些空間和意境。」楊雲濤也跟

陳慶恩討論過,最後作曲家決 定把劇中的唸白刪掉,全以音 樂呈現故事。

比起《蕭紅》,他對《兩個女 子》較小心翼翼,除了和作曲 家盧定彰討論劇本外,還向文 本作家黃怡了解作品。他稱 《兩個女子》呈現一些很日常 的狀態,但音樂澎湃,格局不 小,「可能只是一些聊天場面, 但內心起伏很大。」所以他設 計的舞蹈場面也不小,以承托 音樂的氣勢,通過舞者的身 體、動作、擺位、空間調度表 現出來,以舞台上的動與靜, 映襯複雜內心世界。《兩個女 子》的人物、事情都很寫實, 但舞台畫面卻呈現很多想像,

「人就是這麼樣,講一套做一 套,甚至連想也一套。我便把 想的那一套放在舞台上。」譬 如有句歌詞是「我思念你」, 「怎樣思念呢?是排山倒海, 還是細水長流?我就以形體做 出來。」

縱使自己作爲編舞,他卻認爲 音樂才是全劇的立足點,再 以舞蹈錦上添花,「不是誰服 務誰,而是互相襯托,互相 成就,把故事呈現得更絲絲 入扣。」

Yang Yuntao, artistic director of the Hong Kong Dance Company, was surprised when the Hong Kong Arts Festival invited him to direct and choreograph the danceopera Love Streams, merging two previously staged chamber operas, Heart of Coral (2013) and Women Like Us (2021). This is because he and his dance company had rarely collaborated with the Arts Festival in the past, but after some thought the reason for the invitation became obvious. “The Hong Kong Dance Company embraces everything. Whether it’s folk, ballet, modern and so on, our choreographers and dancers are navigators of uncharted waters. Heart of Coral is quintessentially a Chinese woman’s story, while Xi Xi’s contemporary works speak vividly to our times. I totally see the common thread between the literature and our work.”

A woman’s story told through music

But as an original dance opera, Love Streams may pose something of a challenge for Yang, who is new to this combined art form. Still, he came equipped with much relevant experience, having choreographed for opera and incorporated operatic music into dance in the past. Yang also notes that famed German choreographer/ dancer Pina Bausch also regularly fused opera and dance. And Yang is no stranger

to hybrid performances. As a choreographer, Yang believes that music is the foundation of everything—the story, the visual imagery of the opera, and the soul of the dance. “In Love Streams, dancers use their bodies, moods and situations to convey the music.” Yang imagines himself working with the composer in the same studio: “The composer weaves a maze through music; I decode it with dance.”

Yang is not a loyal reader of Xiao Hong and Xi Xi, but is not totally unfamiliar with their work either. Having comprehensively studied Xi Xi’s short stories

”A Girl Like Me” and “The Cold”, which inspired the opera Women Like Us, Yang says: “You must equip yourself with your personal experience as you journey through the story, otherwise the powerful pen of Xi Xi will go unnoticed. She had the magical ability to transform a mundane, humdrum existence into something extraordinary.”

Compared to Xiao Hong, Yang feels closer to Xi Xi. “Both of us were living in the same city at the same time.” The male choreographer has always been interested in working with material related to women.

“When you try to observe the world from a woman’s perspective, you become more sensitive. The level of fantasy, potential to break the rules, and the degree of openness become very obvious. Things simply become much more interesting. Men habitually

chase power, fame and money, which seems very realistic, yet very unrealistic.”

Yang has seen the live opera Heart of Coral and has a deep understanding of the work. “Xiao Hong is like a profoundly delicate flower that was born in the bitterest winter, but sprouted from the roughest soil and blossomed into something splendid. It is hard to say if the world she was born into was good or bad, but her immense talent flourished even more brightly against this adversity. Without this, such a noble soul might not have been able to connect generations of readers.” He describes the music of composer Chan Hingyan as imposing, sometimes vigorous, sometimes mellow, “a magnificent assemblage of modern music and traditional instruments”. Since the performance is based on the grand narrative of history, Yang prefers to shift the focus from narration to ambience, to “let the dance breathe in a larger space and elevated mood”. After a discussion with Chan, the composer decided to cut the dialogue and present the story through music.

Yang is more cautious about Women Like Us than Heart of Coral. To further his thoughts, Yang also consulted composer Daniel Lo and librettist Wong Yi. He says the scenes in Women Like Us may involve trivial, everyday situations, but the musical style is contrastingly

surging and commanding. “A scene with casual chatting may seem calm, but the underlying emotions are stirring.” In response to the lofty ambience of the music, Yang’s choreography is striking, delivered through bold movements, positions and spatial modulation, as a reflection of the complex inner world of the protagonist. “The clash between the writer’s turbulent mind and unimpressive reality is huge.” Meanwhile, the characters and plot in Women Like Us are realistically depicted in the novel, but the stage version is full of imagination. “We are always like this—we say one thing and do another, even think another. And I’m putting the choice to ‘think’ on stage. For example, a lyric says ‘I miss you’. ‘How? Do you miss me as strong as a crushing wave, or as subtle as a steady stream?’ My answer will be delivered through body movements.”

Surprisingly for the choreographer of the entire work, Yang emphasises music over dance as the focal point of the dance opera. “It is not a binary opposition for one to serve the other. Things can exist mutually, and adorn and fulfill each other, perfecting a story that has been intricately woven together.”

Highly praised for his remarkable rhythm by Montreal's La Presse, multitalented conductor and percussionist Vicky Shin has collaborated with various ensembles across Asia, North America and Europe in both conducting and percussion roles.

Ensembles he has worked with include the International Ensemble Modern Akademie Klangspuren Ensemble, Ensemble Linea, Ensemble Modern and the soundSCAPE New Music Festival in Italy.

Shin finds the interaction between performers and composers unique, which renders the creative process of rehearsing enlightening. His main focus is to perform contemporary music and most recently he has worked with Steve Reich and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

He is currently the Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, recording several records and premiering several new works. He is also the Founder/Music Director of

Shin obtained a Master’s degree in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music and a Bachelor’s degree in Music from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. He is privileged to have attended rehearsals and masterclasses by Maestro Peter Eötvös, Yannick Nezet-Seguin and Kent Nagano.

Kenix Tsang is a graduate of the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and received her Master’s degree from Codarts University for the Arts in the Netherlands. Her teachers have included Chan Siu-kwan, Frans Huijts and Dongjian Gong. She was the second prize winner at the 17th Osaka International Music Competition (Vocal Recital Course), and currently teaches at the University of Hong Kong and the Education University of Hong Kong.

張吟晶現為香港的頂尖青年女 中音歌唱家之一。她在香港演 藝學院先後以優異成績完成音 樂學士及碩士學位課程。

Samantha Chong has a varied repertoire ranging from early music, oratorio, songs, opera and contemporary works. Chong graduated with a Master of Music Degree, having earlier

earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music, both at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

She was the winner of the first ASEAN Vocal competition, organised by Singapore Lyric Opera in 2016. After her graduation, she started her career as a soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Hong Kong, Musica Viva and the Global Symphony Orchestra. Chong made her Italian debut in 2019 with Teatro Petruzzelli, singing Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Recently, she was also invited to perform with the Erasmus Orchestra, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Hong Kong—Vienna Music Festival, the Kuala Lumpur City Opera, the Hong Kong Grand Opera, The Singapore Lyric Opera, the China Sichuan Music Conservatory and the Mozart Festival in Shenzhen, China.

Born in Hong Kong, opera singer, conductor and composer Alex Tam graduated from the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) Opera Course and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Tam has taken leading roles in operas, concerts, and other productions worldwide and has performed more than 30 operatic roles. He performed his first leading role at the age of 19 as Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), followed by Almaviva (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), Tonio (La Fille du règiment) and many others.

He is currently Chorus Director of Opera Hong Kong, a voice teacher and choir conductor with the HKAPA, a conductor of PolyU Choir, and president of the Aria Academy of Music. Tam received the ARAM award from the Royal Academy of Music in London for his significant contributions to the music profession. In 2018, he received the Outstanding Musician Award from the Hong Kong Music and Dance Association. Tam is also a radio presenter on RTHK Radio 4.

A native of Hong Kong, Apollo Wong is a conductor and operatic bass-baritone. He has sung major operatic and musical roles including Don Pasquale (Don Pasquale), Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte) and Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), among others. As a singerconductor, Wong has notably both sung the bass solos and conducted choral-orchestral works including Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 (Symphony of a Thousand), Verdi’s Messa da Requiem and Faurè’s Requiem. Also involved in contemporary music, he performed in worldpremiere operas by Chan Hingyan. He recently appeared in the world premiere of Valtinoni’s musical Alice in Wonderland as Duchess and Caterpillar, and created the singer-conductor role of Lion/Master for the score of the 2022 musical WILD.

Educated in the USA and Germany, Wong was the winner of Palm Springs Opera Guild Vocal competition and the Pasadena Opera Guild Vocal Scholarship. In 2019, Wong won first place at the Hong Kong Choral Conducting Competition and the Asia Pacific Youth Choir Award.

Since 2006, Carol Lin has taken principal mezzo-soprano roles in opera productions including the title role of Carmen and Maria de Buenos Aires. She has worked with organisations such as the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Lin holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and a Master of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, soprano Rachel Kwok has been an active vocalist throughout Hong Kong and Asia in recent years. Her recent performances include Give & Thrive with the Gustav Mahler Orchestra and the Bach Cantata Lecture Concert Tour of Malaysia with Bachfest Malaysia. She has

also won various awards in recent years.

On the opera stage, Kwok has starred in opera roles such as Olympia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte. In 2021, she made her debut with Adina with Opera Hong Kong in L’elisir d’amore, receiving critical acclaim for her vivid performance and delicate voice.

Bonnie Liu is a Music graduate of the Hong Kong Baptist University, and was instructed by Chan Siu-kwan.

Liu performs as an opera singer and concert soloist in the classical and contemporary music scene, in productions such as Mozart’s La finta semplice, Schubert’s Mass No.5, and the 41st and 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival’s chamber opera productions Heart of Coral and Datong

Liu has also performed internationally as a chorister

in Estonia, France, Japan and the USA. Since 2021, Liu has served as a fellow of the HKPhil Chorus.

Ernest Hui is a Hong Kong vocalist who has instructed groups in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Macau. Apart from teaching and performing, Hui has also worked as a composer and choral conductor in multiple theatrical productions. Hui took part in the chorus ensemble of Heart of Coral (2013 premiere).

Roberto Abbondanza. Since graduating in Italy, he has performed different roles in a number of opera productions, namely Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Sesto in Handel’s

Giulio Cesare in Egitto. Lau has also been invited to sing as a soloist in performances of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Bruckner’s Te Deum, Haydn’s Creation and Schubert’s Mass in A flat Major. He is also a choral conductor, currently working with Musica Viva’s opera chorus.

Lam Kwok-ho has performed as soloist in opera productions in Hong Kong and Taiwan. His operatic credits include Somnus in Semele, the title role of Gianni Schicchi, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Guglielmo in Cosi fan Tutte, Escamillo in Carmen, Schaunard in La Boheme. He participated in the premieres of Chan Hing-yan’s chamber opera Heart of Coral and Daniel Lo’s Women Like Us at Hong Kong Arts Festival.

more than 180 opera, operetta and musical productions with companies such as the Indiana University Opera Theater, Light Opera Works (Chicago), the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Pamiro Opera (Wisconsin), Opera Pacific (California), the Los Angeles Opera, Musica Viva (Hong Kong) and Opera Hong Kong; and festivals including the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Beijing Music Festival and Opera Festival di Roma (Italy). She also worked as voice coach for students at the Depaul University of Chicago, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the University of California Los Angeles. She has been the Principal Répétiteur of Opera Hong Kong since 2004.

Established in 1981, the Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) was incorporated in 2001 as a charitable and non-profit-making institution, and is financially supported by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. As one of the major flagship performing arts companies in Hong Kong, the HKDC’s mission is to promote Chinese dance with a contemporary artistic vision and a Hong Kong character. Since its inception, more than 200 productions have been staged. It is also on a quest to infuse Chinese martial arts into dance, seeking new expressions of movement and aesthetics that embody its cultural roots.

As a cultural ambassador of Hong Kong, the HKDC constantly brings the city's unique artistic style to the world by touring to different cities across the globe, encouraging cultural exchange. Pan Lingjuan graduated from the Beijing Dance Academy, majoring in Chinese Classical Dance. She was awarded scholarships three years in a row, and has toured to France, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, Oman, Korea, Belgium, and Ireland (invited by the Irish Embassy in 2009). She has won numerous awards, including the third prize at the National Dance Competition in 2001, the CCTV Dance Awards’ Commendable Dancer Award in 2002, the third prize at the Beijing Dance Competition and the third prize at the Guizhou Dance Competition.

Pan joined Hong Kong Dance Company in 2011 and her performances in principal roles include Plateau Bluebells, Masquerade, The Legend of Mulan, The Butterfly Lovers, Storm Clouds, L’Amour Immortel, Chinese Hero: A Lone Exile, Waiting Heart, Liu San Jie, Mazu the Sea Goddess, Nine Songs and The Moon in Myth of the Dancing Durumi.

She received the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer at the 2017 Hong Kong Dance Awards for her performance in Chinese Hero: A Lone Exile.

生於香港,林靖嵐畢業於英國 華威大學法律系及聖三一拉邦 音樂舞蹈學院。她從小接受多 項舞種培訓,現為自由身舞者 及編舞。近期演出包括鄧樹榮 戲劇工作室《哈姆雷特》及新 約舞流《 Maze 3.0 》等。

Born in Hong Kong, Jasmine Lam graduated from the University of Warwick with a Bachelor of Laws, and from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance with a Graduate Diploma in Dance. She now works as a freelance dancer and choreographer in Hong Kong. Her recent performances include Hamlet by Tang Shu Wing Theatre Studio and Maze 3.0 by Passoverdance.

Born in Hong Kong, Pansy Lo graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2015, majoring in Ballet. She joined the City Contemporary Dance Company in the same year as a fulltime apprentice dancer. She is currently working as a freelance dancer and choreographer. In 2021, she presented her solo choreography -ache at Voice Out, commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Evains Lui graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Contemporary Dance and Choreography. 香港創樂團 Hong Kong New Music Ensemble

香港創樂團由凌藝廉於 2008 年 成立,是亞洲首屈一指的當代 音樂組合,多年來為觀眾帶來 高水平的當代音樂演出。樂團 以創新的節目獲各地觀眾熱烈 迴響,獲美國有線電視新聞網 譽為「香港最前衛樂團之一」。 除音樂演出外,樂團亦透過教 育外展活動、跨媒介合作及研 究計劃為本地及國際藝術家建 立實驗及合作平台。

香港創樂團現由十五位成員組 成,以各種靈活組合於不同場 境演出。當中包括不少由香港 創樂團委約創作的作品。樂團 多年來演出多首當代音樂大師 的經典名作,並為多位本地及 海外作曲家的新作作首演。

香港創樂團曾與多個團體及文 化機構合作,包括進念‧二十 面體、香港中樂團、廣東現代 舞團、愛麗絲劇場實驗室等。

香港創樂團自 2012 年起成為香 港藝術發展局資助團體,並兩 度獲香港特區政府的「藝能發 展資助計劃」資助,創辦「現 代學院」。

Founded in 2008 by William Lane, the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (HKNME) is Asia's leading new music group, dedicated to presenting contemporary music at the highest possible standard. Renowned for its exciting performances, the HKNME’s productions extend beyond the concert stage to educational outreach events, interdisciplinary collaborations and research projects with a global network of artistic associates.

The Ensemble has collaborated with renowned organisations such as Zuni Icosahedron, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Guangdong Modern Dance Company, soundpocket, Studio Acht and Alice Theatre Laboratory.

The HKNME has been annually funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council since 2012.

馮國基畢業於香港演藝學院、 香港浸會大學電影藝術碩士, 主修電影導演。2003 年獲「香 港舞蹈年獎—最佳燈光設計」 及香港舞台劇協會頒發「最佳 燈光設計」獎項。作品在香港 超過二百多個,更多次獲優人 神鼓、舞蹈家楊麗萍大型舞 劇《孔雀》、多倫多 Canadian Stage 等各地邀請創作設計。

Gabriel Fung graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Directing, and the Hong Kong Baptist University with a Master of Fine Arts in Film. In 2003, he received the Outstanding Lighting Design award from the Hong Kong Dance Awards and the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies. He has produced more than 200 works in Hong Kong, and has been invited to design for U-Theatre,

the dance spectacle The Peacock by dancer Yang Liping, the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto, and many other venues worldwide.

A fashion and theatre costume designer, Cheng Man-wing graduated from L'Ecole Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré, L'Université de la Sorbonne in France, and The Somerset College of Arts and Technology in the UK, majoring in Fine Art Textile and Fabric Printing Technology. Cheng is keen on exploring interactions between fashion and the theatre. He periodically presents his fashion collections in Paris, and has recently designed costumes for theatre art groups including Theatre du Pif, On and On Theatre Workshop, Actors' Family, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the City Contemporary Dance Company, Theatre Horizon, Prospects Theatre, Y-Space and the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre.

蔣源龍於英國薩里大學音樂及 錄製系取得一級榮譽學士學 位,並榮獲多個獎項。他曾於 倫敦市政廳音樂及戲劇學院工 作,現於香港演藝學院任教。

蔣源龍曾與多個著名藝術家及 團體合作,為其錄製音樂及設 計音效,包括梵志登、張緯 晴、香港管弦樂團和香港芭蕾 團等。近期參與的製作包括港 芭 X 港樂《布蘭詩歌》、2022 及 2023 年的《綻放大館》及鋼琴 家牛牛的唱片《 BEETHOVEN Fate & Hope 》。他亦曾於盧景 文教授帶領的非凡美樂管理多 項歌劇、音樂會及比賽製作。

Roy Cheung graduated from the University of Surrey in the UK with first-class-honours Bachelor's degrees in Music and Sound Recording, and won multiple awards along the way.

Before relocating back to Hong Kong, he worked at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and is currently teaching at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

He has produced recordings and designed sound for many major artists and organisations in the region, including Jaap van Zweden, Rachel Cheung, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong Ballet. Recent productions include HK Ballet X HK Phil's Carmina Burana, Tai Kwun InnerGlow 2022-23 and Niu Niu's album Fate and Hope. He has also worked with Musica Viva, led by veteran producer and director Professor Lo King-man, managing opera productions, concerts and competitions.

Gloria Ngai received her degree from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and her Master’s degree from Central Saint Martins. Since graduation, she has been working with different performing arts groups in Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Opera

Hong Kong, Zuni Icosahedron, the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, Tang Shuwing Theatre Studio, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Yat Po Singers. Ngai is a widely recognised production manager in opera and international touring productions. She has collaborated with different companies including The Globe, Selladoor, Tall Stories Company, Lyric Hammersmith (UK) and Opera Monte Carlo.
