第五十一屆香港藝術節隆重舉行,可 喜可賀。

逾半個世紀以來,藝術節每年均呈獻 多姿多彩的文藝節目,由古典音樂、 歌劇、戲劇,以至舞蹈、多媒體項 目等,包羅萬有,令觀眾大飽眼福。

今屆藝術節以《收音機與茱麗葉》及 《春之祭》芭蕾舞表演揭開序幕,兩 齣經典作品經由著名編舞家愛德華· 克魯格重新編排,加上斯洛文尼亞 國家歌劇院馬里博爾芭蕾舞團傾力演 出,萬眾矚目;約五星期後,歐洲頂 尖交響樂團—德國班貝格交響樂團將 登台獻技,為今年藝術節畫上圓滿句 號。其間上演的焦點節目還有: 國 際星級女高音安娜·涅翠柯與丈夫男 高音尤西夫·伊瓦佐夫聯袂表演的音 樂會;由藝術家威廉·肯特里奇精心 製作、南非木偶劇團和比利時里切卡 爾古樂團奇妙演繹的蒙特威爾第歌劇 《尤利西斯歸鄉記》;由芭蕾天后娜塔 麗亞·奧斯波娃領銜主演的芭蕾巨 星之《「世」不可擋》及傳奇舞姬之 《趾尖》;以及國際鋼琴大賽冠軍劉曉 禹的演奏會。

藝術節向來十分重視本地演藝人才, 致力讓他們一展才華。今屆藝術節亦 會上演多個粵劇節目,包括《竹林愛 傳奇》、「毛俊輝.粵劇情」、《畫皮》 (精新版),以及「短篇粵劇—戲說 八德」; 並帶來其他本地作品,包括 《飯戲攻心》踏台版、《末戀.無愛合 約》、舞蹈歌劇《兩生花》等等,定 必精彩萬分,不容錯過。

大眾還可通過藝術節,體驗繽紛的藝 術魅力。法國食蟻獸沉浸式藝術工作 室創作的《第一步》,會邀請觀眾互 動共舞;在大館舉行的一系列免費藝 術科技節目,以及「無限亮」計劃, 亦會讓公眾參與其中。「無限亮」計 劃由本地和海外不同能力的藝術家擔 綱演出,鼓勵青少年衝破界限,探索

I would like to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 51st edition.

For more than half a century now, the Arts Festival has enthralled audiences with a superb annual programme of arts and culture performances embracing classical music and opera, theatre, dance, multimedia and a great deal more.

This year’s Arts Festival programme opens with the Slovene National Theatre Maribor’s ballet performances of Radio and Juliet and Le Sacre du Printemps, two classics re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Edward Clug. It closes, nearly five weeks later, with a concert by Germany’s Bamberg Symphony, one of Europe’s greatest orchestras. Other highlights include Anna Netrebko, one of the world’s great sopranos, performing with her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov; artist William Kentridge’s remarkable production of Monteverdi’s opera, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, brought to life by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and Belgium’s Ricercar Consort periodinstrument ensemble; Ballet Superstars’ Force of Nature and Legendary Ballerina

in Two Feet featuring supreme ballerina Natalia Osipova; and concerts by the international award-winning piano virtuoso Bruce Liu.

As always, the Festival shines a spotlight on standout artists from Hong Kong. This year’s Cantonese opera offerings include Love in the Bamboo Grove, Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, The Painted Skin (Refined Edition) and Virtues and Morality—Four Cantonese Operas. Local productions including Table For Six on Stage, Loveless Romance and Love Streams are sure to be among this year’s Festival highlights.

Several programmes invite public participation as well, including the First Steps participatory dance performances staged by France’s Tamanoir Immersive Studio, as well as Tai Kwun’s free series of arts tech productions and the Festival’s No Limits programme, led by local and international artists of varying abilities. No Limits’ offerings emphasise youth exploration, as does the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival with its school tours, preperformance workshops and special programming. And then there is the Festival PLUS creative activities that bring artists and audiences together in communities throughout Hong Kong.

I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its inspired commitment to the arts and to Hong Kong’s continuing rise as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. My thanks, as well, to the Festival’s many generous sponsors and donors.

I am delighted to welcome you to the 51st edition of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. As the city recovers from the disruption of the pandemic, the Festival is returning with an array of live performances featuring top-notch artists from Hong Kong and across the world. Despite the boundless possibilities offered by the internet, attending performances in person remains an irreplaceable experience. It gives me great pleasure to share this collective experience with you today.

The Festival is made possible by the generosity of our supporters.

I wish to thank the HKSAR Government, via the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, for the annual subvention which underpins our long-standing work. I am also grateful for the ongoing contributions from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, as well as corporate sponsors, charitable foundations and individual donors. My sincere thanks go

to the participating artists for their dedication to bringing the best to our audiences, especially those returning after previous cancellations due to the pandemic.

Our theme this year, “Coming Back, Moving Forward”, represents our determination to come back in full force after several years of uncertainties caused by the pandemic. After five decades of hard work and dedication, the Festival has established itself as a premier arts event in the region and an important international arts festival. We are honoured to carry this legacy forward, while advancing our multifaceted work to stay relevant in the present. In the 51st edition, we discover creative voices through new renditions of masterpieces, cross-disciplinary collaborations and commissioned productions— all of which showcase the breadth and endless possibilities of the performing arts, taking us one step

forward in this journey of exploration. Beyond exceptional performances, we are also offering a series of auxiliary PLUS programmes to enhance audience engagement and provide deeper insights into our programmes. Our strong commitment to arts education is seen in the extensive outreach activities aimed at inspiring the younger generation of Hong Kong through promoting quality arts.

The Festival steps into the second half of its first centenary with both optimism and renewed courage to bravely face the great challenges ahead. I hope you will stay close with us and be inspired by what the Festival has to offer.

香港藝術節於 1973 年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的文化 盛事,於每年 2、 3 月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國際藝術家 的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育活動,致力豐 富香港的文化生活。

香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2022/ 23 財政年度預計收

入(包括第 51 屆香港藝術節及 2023 年「無限亮」)約港 幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔總收入約 18%,另外約 24%需來自票房收入,約 43%則需依賴來自 各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊助和捐款。預計餘 下的約 15%則來自其他收入,包括政府針對捐款和贊助收 入而提供的配對資助。

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2022/23 (including the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2023 “No Limits”) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 18% of the Festival's total income. Around 24% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 43% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. The HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres, such as*:

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family – A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina

成立 30 年來,已為逾 810, 000 位本地中學生及大專生提供 藝術體驗活動。藝術節近年亦開展多項針對大、中、小學 生的藝術教育活動,包括由國際及本地藝術家主持的示範 講座及工作坊、學生展演、演前講座、公開彩排、以及欣 賞藝術節演出。同時,通過「學生票捐助計劃」,藝術節 每年提供約 10, 000 張半價學生票。

Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake co-commissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera.

The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 30 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 810,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.

The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

The HKAF actively promotes inclusiveness and understanding via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

The HKAF officially launched the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation in 2022 to provide greater financial security and longterm sustainability for the Festival. Donations to the Foundation will help the Festival to present large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for. (2023

逃家少女小狐狸正在酒吧中乞討 錢財,好為當晚尋個棲身之所。

小狐狸跟着霍羅斯特回到家, 但他的兒子和養女卻對小狐狸 很不友善,極盡羞辱捉弄之能 事。大打一架後,小狐狸決定

回到街頭碰碰運氣,偷了些錢便 逃走了。

流浪街頭的小狐狸慢慢適應了無 家可歸的生活,並結識了一眾街 友。她自由奔放,想永遠如此無 拘無束。不久,一位帥氣的年 輕人出現,小狐狸淪陷了……

數月後,小狐狸發現自己懷孕 了。她以為年輕的戀人會將她 拋棄,然而對方卻向她求了婚。

於是,這對小情侶着手迎接新生 命的到來。

與此同時,霍羅斯特忘不了那位 充滿野性的小姑娘。他向警察 朋友夏拉斯特傾訴,說他很擔心 小狐狸孤身一人在街頭的安危。 這位不可靠的警察叫他大可放 心,他定會把小狐狸帶回來。

夏拉斯特上街巡邏,發現了肚子 已高高隆起的小狐狸,正蝸居在 一個臨時搭建的板房。他立刻 追了上去,一場追逐後,小狐 狸眼看就要逃脫,夏拉斯特卻拔 出了槍。在最後的掙扎中,小 狐狸中槍身亡,夏拉斯特慌忙處 理了屍體。

A young runaway who goes by the name Vixen finds herself in a bar begging for money so she can get a bed for the night. She meets a man who offers to take her home—it's safe and warm, he promises.

The man, named Forester, takes Vixen to his house, where his son and his foster daughter tease and torment her. After a vicious fight, she decides she'd prefer to try her luck on the streets, so she steals some money and runs away.

Out in the wild, Vixen finds a life for herself among the down and out. She's free and she wants to keep it that way. Then a handsome young man crosses her path, and she falls for him…

Several months pass and Vixen finds out she is pregnant. Although she expects her young lover to abandon her, instead he

proposes and the couple start planning to bring their baby into the world.

In the meantime, Forester can't get the fierce young girl out of his mind. He tells his friend, a dodgy policeman named Harasta, that he is worried about Vixen all alone on the streets. Harasta tells Forester he can find Vixen and bring her home.

Harasta heads out onto the streets and discovers the now heavily pregnant Vixen living in a makeshift hut. A chase ensues and Vixen almost gets away, but Harasta pulls a gun on her. During a final struggle, Vixen is shot and Harasta hurriedly removes her body.

Forester is left never knowing what happened to Vixen, the girl who made his heart remember what it was like to be young and free. He returns home and life goes on.

The core theme at the centre of Janácek‘s The Cunning Little Vixen is the cycle of life; the growing simplicity as we age and the realisation that with death, there is also new life. In this production of Vixen, we focus on the human elements of the narrative and have made the characters real people, not animals. This brings the cycle of life into sharp focus and, as we follow the Vixen, now a young homeless girl on the run, we are confronted with some of the harsh realities of life as they play out around us. As a voyeur, the audience members become almost complicit in the goingson around them and are left to question their own thoughts and feelings about life.

In the United Kingdom, we see homelessness almost every time we go out, but rarely become more than passersby. We don’t often get to know the real people behind what we see and don’t learn of their reallife experiences. Homelessness exists in varying degrees around the world and there are forgotten people in every society, so our story translates

In addition to this, the audience is also at the heart of the action and often becomes a part of the scenes. Compounded with the use of headphones to deliver the music, there are few distractions for the audience, so it is really living alongside the characters during the show. Together, this all adds up to create a unique operatic experience that does away with the red velvet curtains and the proscenium arch. We have removed the degree of separation between audience and stage, making the two become one on a shared journey.

Accessibility is a big buzz word in opera and companies are always looking for innovative ways to break down barriers for the audience in order to diversify the reach of the art form. By bringing in technology, humanising the characters and including the audience, we help connect the opera and the audience in a way that wouldn’t normally be experienced in a formal setting. And with all of that said, all that remains for me to say is: Follow the girl.

透過《小狐狸》的佈景設計, 我們想帶你來到一個你可能不 熟悉的領域。除了耳機傳來 的音樂是沉浸式的,我們也希 望你能體驗小狐狸的世界,感 受其中的活力與危險,並在小 狐狸奮力求生時,跟隨她的腳 步,成為她旅途中的一分子。

本製作最初版本的設定,是在 倫敦骯髒昏暗的荒街野巷。我

們從一間酒吧啟程,跟隨女孩 來到霍羅斯特家塞滿梳化的客 廳,然後穿過佈滿塗鴉的牆, 鐵網圍住的城中村,以及衰敗 的都市景象。這時,你已進 入陽光照射不到的倫敦地下世 界。在這裏,小狐狸會利用她 找得到的一切資源,來築起自 己的小家。

自 2017 年倫敦首演後,我們 每到一座城市,就會根據當地

當你進入大館操場空間,就會 瞬間來到小狐狸的領地。這次 的故事從大樹下講起,很快, 我們就會跟隨女孩來到霍羅斯 特在香港的家。從他的公寓 穿出後,我們撥開晾曬中的衣 服,便來到後門。眼前,一條 小巷彷如這座充滿活力的都市 中千百條小巷,帶着我們一路 向下,來到洗衣場石階,見證 接下來故事的展開。

To tell the story of our Vixen, we need to follow her into her underground world.

Through the design for Vixen, we want to draw you into a world you may not be familiar with. Alongside the musical immersion you will hear in your headphones, we want you to feel a part of the vibrant but perilous world she must survive in, to actually walk alongside her and play a role in her journey. Our original production was set on the gritty and dark backstreets of London. We start our journey at a bar and follow the girl to the sofa-filled living room of the Forester House. Finally, upon seeing the graffiti-covered walls and fenced shantytowns and urban decay, you have entered the underground world and follow her onto London’s backstreets, where Vixen uses whatever she can find to make a home.

The overall look of Vixen has been adapted according to each location we have used since our first show in London in the summer of 2017. The design always depends on what we can find to recreate the production as realistically as possible despite the very different locations. Using local cultural references and familiarities helps set the scene.

In our London production set in the arches of the Vaults Theatre beneath Waterloo Station, the corridor up to the Forester House was filled with

the real life-faces and details of missing people from London and surrounding areas. We hoped to raise awareness of real-life runaways such as our young Vixen.

For our Beijing production, we set up in a building near the Sanlitun shopping plaza complex in Chaoyang District. We used local street signs, banners and even street posters to make the audience feel they were somewhere familiar, but also truly immersed in Vixen’s world.

Now we find ourselves in Hong Kong, with its magnificent skyline and high-rise buildings. Having walked around to gain inspiration from the city’s landscape, after taking a wrong turn from the Temple Street night market, I was immediately drawn in by the back alleys and lanes. In every direction, the narrow corridors were filled with overhead wires, hanging drying racks, air conditioning units, dripping water pipes and Hong Kong’s distinct bamboo

scaffolding. This is Vixen’s world. The “in-between” parts of a city.

After arriving at the beautiful space at Tai Kwun, you are transported to Vixen’s world. From underneath the canopy of trees, soon we are following the girl on her journey. We find ourselves watching Vixen and Forester in his Hong Kong apartment. From the back of his house, pushing past his washing, we head through the back gate. We are then led down one of the familiar alleyways that run through this dynamic city…. and down to the Laundry Steps you go, to watch the story unfold.

How Silent Opera Pumps Up the Volume on the Classics

「歌劇」一詞讓你想起甚麼?假如你對歌劇的印象是衣香鬢影的觀眾加上華麗得嚇人、放滿紅絨椅的 歌劇院,那麼來自英國的寂靜歌劇團或會改變你對歌劇的固有印象。

What do you think of when someone says “opera”? If it’s an ornate, intimidating opera house full of red velvet seats and people in posh evening wear, then the Silent Opera company from the UK wants you to forget everything you’ve learned so far.

寂靜歌劇團由導演黛思‧伊凡 於約十年前創立,借用隨着「無 聲的士高」熱潮而普及的技術, 專注為新一代製作歌劇表演。參 加者在體驗這些沉浸式演出時, 可以選擇聆聽歌手及伴奏樂手現 場奏唱,或戴上無線耳機,收聽 預先錄製的管弦樂版歌劇演出。

樂總監史提芬‧希金斯來港籌 備 2023 年香港藝術節演出—— 賽馬會本地菁英創作系列: 沉 浸式歌劇《小狐狸》,並與《閱 藝》進行訪談,她說歌劇團成立 的契機其實並非近年流行的無聲 的士高。

伊凡說:「我在倫敦成長,當地 戲劇界有很多新奇事。非主流劇 場的發展蓬勃,孕育大批實驗性 或沉浸式劇作。我有音樂背景, 對歌劇情有獨鍾,便想:『怎樣 能仿效這些劇團,讓歌劇邁向新 發展呢?』」

「我只看過英國皇家歌劇院和英 國國家歌劇團的演出,那時的 我,面對這些票價昂貴、不太 親民的大型表演藝術機構,有種 被拒於門外的感覺。我想正視 這個情況,於是投身創作。」

尋找新聲

伊凡說她在大學時開始思索如何 籌劃場域特定的歌劇,工具只有 一部鋼琴。後來發現缺少了管弦 樂團,整個構思有欠全面;加入 管弦樂團的元素後,她又發現要 在表演場地移動樂器或容許樂手 自由走動,在安排上並不容易。 後來,伊凡在倫敦乘搭地鐵時靈 機一觸,想到新的方法。「我在

地鐵上看見大家都戴着耳機,沉 醉在自己的小宇宙。如果觀眾 可以置身於歌劇的聲境之中,同 時聽到管弦樂團及歌手的演出, 然後在到處遊走時,身邊人突然 開口高歌,那一定非常有趣。 最後決定採用無線技術的無聲的 士高耳機,是因爲它最方便。」

技術革新

希金斯解釋單用預先錄製的管弦 樂音軌並不理想,因為這會令歌 手失去現場伴奏時的發揮空間。

他說:「我們希望改善技術,演 出時保留音樂的感性。我與黛 思最初合作時運用了 Qlab(用 作調控背景音效、影片、燈光 及其他舞台指令的程式)播放音 樂片段,相比起電腦程式,那 更像是有生命力、其他會呼吸的 樂器。」

「我想,既然我們會使用各種錄 音片段和信號,還會把六十位演 出者的聲音收錄入電腦,那麼何 不善用電腦本身的功能,更深入 利用軟件創作呢?」

希金斯意識到 Qlab 軟件可透過

無線耳機偵測到歌手在演唱前急 速吸氣的聲音,並啓動播放錄音 片段的指令。隨後,現場樂手 與演出班底不斷磨合並熟習錄音 片段,寂靜歌劇團的構思亦大 功告成。

讓樂手走出樂池

伊凡說雖然演出依賴電子儀器進 行,但寂靜歌劇團同樣會起用樂 手現場奏樂。「一般歌劇演出的 樂手都有種疏離感,他們一概穿 黑衣,好像隱沒在樂池裏,也沒 人會鼓勵觀眾多留意他們。我 的想法是,樂手身處「舞台」, 配合現場演出奏樂,我們要怎樣 才能讓他們在戲劇世界裏感到輕 鬆自在?」

「舉例說,樂手在《小狐狸》化 身街頭樂團在路邊賣藝賺錢,所 奏樂曲的來源正是原著歌劇,所 以歌手可以自然融入演唱,成為 劇場空間裏的一份子,而觀眾不 會有距離感。」

行演出,並將原劇本的背景設定 從倫敦改為香港,加入本土風 味,例如劇中的狐狸便說要請母 狐喝一杯珍珠奶茶。為了讓本 地觀眾對配樂更感親切,錄音團 隊亦下了不少苦功,例如收錄香 港行人過路處的聲音地景。

不難想像,寂靜歌劇團在成立之 初曾面對主流歌劇界不少質疑, 但他們迎難而上,最終贏得很多 歌劇界資深前輩的讚賞。希金斯 說:「我們的演出不是上流社會 的聚會,它緊貼城市脈搏,觀 眾毋須盛裝出席,不受任何規條 約束。我們是不會害怕那些『歌 劇特警』的。」

Founded by director Daisy Evans in London just more than a decade ago, Silent Opera proudly produces opera performances “for the next generation” using technology popularised by the silent disco movement. During these immersive performances, participants can either listen to the opera singers live, backed by performers on live instruments, or put on wireless headsets to hear a pre-recorded full orchestral performance of the opera they are experiencing.

But the popular silent discos that have emerged in recent years weren’t the original inspiration for the company, Evans told FestMag in Hong Kong late last year while she was preparing for their 2023 HKAF show Vixen alongside company music director Stephen Higgins.

“When I was growing up in London, there was a lot of really cool theatre stuff happening. There was a big fringe scene and there’s a lot of experimental and immersive theatre,” she says. “I came from a musical background, I really liked opera, and I thought, ‘How can I get opera to do what these other theatre companies are doing?’

“The only opera I could see was the Royal Opera House and the English National Opera and these big, kind of scary, expensive institutions. And a lot of those doors were barred to me at that age. But I wanted to get straight in there and start creating.”

Finding a new voice

Evans said she started to formulate plans for site-specific operas while at university, just using piano, but found the concept lacking without an orchestra. And then after adding an orchestra she encountered logistical problems in trying to enable musicians and their instruments to remain mobile around the performance venues. And then, while travelling on London’s Underground trains, Evans had a lightbulb moment. “On the Tube, I was starting to see that everyone was wearing headphones and were in their own little world. I thought it would be so interesting if you could put people into the sonic world of the opera as they were walking around a performance, so the person next to you could start singing and you’d hear the whole of the orchestra as well as the singer. The silent disco headphones use wireless technology, so that seemed to be the easiest way to do it.”

A technological revolution

Higgins explains that simply using a pre-recorded orchestral track wouldn’t work because it robbed the singers of the freedom they had when performing over live music. “We thought we’d try and develop a way of working that still used this technology but retained a musical sensibility,” he says. “So for our first shows together, the music clips were triggered by QLab [a macOS program for playing back sound, video,

light, and show control cues], but as a sort of living, breathing instrument rather than as a computer program.

“Eventually, I thought, well, you’re getting all this information [such as musical cues and audio clips] and you’re putting 60 performers into a computer. Why don’t you just use what the computer has in the first place and make something a bit more electronic based?”

Ingeniously, Higgins realised that audio clips could be launched by the software when it detected—via wireless microphones—the sound of a singer taking in a sharp breath before singing. And then, after working out how live musicians could integrate with the cast and the audio clips being triggered on the software, the Silent Opera concept was complete.

Musicians dragged out of the pit

Evans said that despite their reliance on electronics, it was vital that Silent Opera shows also made use of live musicians. “When you go to the opera, the musicians are very separate. They’re all wearing black, they’re in a pit and you’re either not encouraged to look at them at all or they’re kind of hidden. I just thought, ‘They’re there and they’re making the sound that goes along with this, so how do we make sure that they feel at home in this dramatic world?

“In Vixen, for example, they

are a band of street buskers trying to earn money. The tunes they’re playing are inspired by material from the original opera, which then our singers can join in with. So it all fits together, but it’s all part of the same dramatic world and you can imagine yourself being there.”

Vixen is Silent Opera’s version of The Cunning Little Vixen, composed by Leoš Janácek, and is the latest in a long line of opera classics to receive an immersive overhaul by the British company—others that have received the Silent Opera treatment include La Boheme, L’Orfeo, Carmen and Don Giovanni.

Roaming the relics of history

The Hong Kong version of Vixen takes place at several locations around the Tai Kwun complex— the Prison Yard and Laundry Steps—and it’s taken on a local

flavour: the references in the original text to life in London have all been changed to Hong Kong, the Fox offers to buy the Vixen a bubble tea, and the audio team worked hard to make the soundtrack familiar to a local audience, such as by sampling the sound of Hong Kong pedestrian crossings. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Silent Opera team initially faced scepticism from the establishment, but it eventually won praise from many opera veterans—although sometimes through gritted teeth. “What we do is urban, it’s not at all posh, you don’t have to dress up, and there are no rules,” says Higgins. “We’re not scared of the opera police.”

黛思.伊凡製作的《藍鬍子城 堡》獲得 2022 年南岸獎的歌劇 類提名。她獲 Sky Arts Futures Fund 資助,成立了銳意創新 的寂靜歌劇團。她為歌劇團 導演了新版的洪佩爾丁克作品 《韓賽爾與葛麗特》、莫扎特的 《唐璜》、普契尼的《波希米亞 人》、珀塞爾的《狄多與伊尼 阿斯》等。 寂靜歌劇團曾在國 際巡迴演出。伊凡曾獲得國際 歌劇獎青年導演獎提名,並以 其《女人皆如此》獲得外西區 戲劇獎之最佳歌劇製作獎。

Daisy Evans’ production of Bluebeard’s Castle was nominated in the opera category at the 2022 South Bank Awards. She was a recipient of the Sky Arts Futures Fund for founding and creating the innovative Silent Opera company. With the company she has directed a new version of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Puccini’s La bohème, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and more. Silent Opera has toured internationally. Evans has been nominated for the award for Young Director at the International Opera Awards and won the award for Best Opera Production for her production of Cosi fan tutte at the Off West End Theatre Awards.

Her notable productions include films of The Telephone for the Edinburgh International Festival, Hansel and Gretel for the Scottish Opera, Don Pasquale and Cherry Town for the Welsh National Opera, Carmen remastered for the Barbican and Royal Opera House, and Wakening Shadow for the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. As a librettist she has written English versions of The Magic Flute, Bluebeard’s Castle, Hansel and Gretel, Don Pasquale, Vixen, Don Giovanni, L’orfeo and La bohème.

Stephen Higgins has conducted many world premieres such as The Way Back Home, directed by Katie Mitchell, at the Young Vic and Opera de Paris; Dr Dee by Damon Albarn, directed by Rufus Norris, at the Manchester Festival and at ENO; and The Duchess of Malfi, a collaboration with ENO and punchdrunk.

His other conducting credits include Magic Flute for ENO, Owen Wingrave for the Bastille, Thais for Chelsea Opera Group, L'Elisir d'amore and Hansel and Gretel for Opera Holland Park, and Don Pasquale and Blaze of Glory for WNO.

Higgins worked with Stephen  Sondheim on revivals of A Little Night Music and Sunday in the Park with George at the Châtelet theatre in Paris, conducted Into the Woods at the Theatre Royal Bath and Gershwin’s Crazy for You in Gothenburg, Sweeney Todd in Bergen with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Phantom of the Opera in London's West End.

His new company, Theatre of Sound, launched with a production of Bluebeard’s Castle with five-star reviews from across the national and international press, and a nomination for the South Bank awards. It is now set to tour the US and Canada.

Mark Burns grew up in England and studied at the Royal Northern College of Music. He regularly works with many of the UK’s major opera companies such as the Royal Opera, the Scottish Opera and the Welsh National Opera. He also has a close association with the Buxton International Festival, directing numerous productions including Tisbe, Lucio Papirio Dittatore and La Voix Humaine, the latter starring Dame Felicity Lott. He was also an Associate Board Member of the Buxton Festival for several years until 2021.

Burns has a passion for working with emerging artists and has directed at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music, as well as working with emerging artists at the Scottish Opera. Previously, he assisted Sir Thomas Allen on his production of Don Giovanni for the Scottish Opera and will be joining him again to assist Il Barbiere di Siviglia for the company this autumn.

香港近年炙手可熱的青年指揮家 葉詠媛,曾獲格林美最佳指揮獎 得主尼爾遜稱讚:「指揮對你來 說就像呼吸一樣自然,音樂天賦 不可多得!」現為候任香港小 交響樂團副指揮。她曾任香港 藝術節、非凡美樂、香港大歌 劇院等客席指揮,亦曾於 201618 樂季出任香港管弦樂團助理 指揮,期間除了協助音樂總監梵 志登及首席客席指揮余隆,亦曾 與艾遜巴赫、杜托爾、辛奈斯 基、霍斯特等大師合作。

葉詠媛畢業於香港中文大學音樂 系,獲一級榮譽。後獲尤德爵 士紀念基金全費獎學金,遠赴美 國印第安納大學修讀合唱指揮音 樂碩士,修業期間為系內副導 師之一。後再於維也納音樂與 表演藝術大學深造管弦樂指揮,

師隨拉祖域及韋德拿,畢業時獲 當屆唯一的最高榮譽獎。她同 時展開了歌劇指揮和合唱指揮的 生涯,曾經指揮的歌劇作品包括 《卡門》、《魔笛》、《漂泊的荷蘭 人》、《諾瑪》等,亦曾任維也納 合唱團 Chorus Delicti 音樂總監 七年,指揮不少海外及本地的 合唱團。

A rising young conductor in Hong Kong, Vivian Ip has received praise from the winner of the Grammy award for Best Conductor, John Nelson: “Conducting is like breathing for you. Bright talent you have!” She has recently been appointed Associate Conductor Designate of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Ip has guest conducted at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Musica Viva Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Grand Opera, and served as Assistant Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra from 2016-18, where she assisted Music Director Jaap van Zweden and Principal Guest Conductor Yu Long, as well as overseas conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Charles Dutoit, Vassily Sinaisky and Lawrence Foster.

Ip received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music (First Class Honours) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. With an Associate Instructorship and the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship for Overseas Studies, she received her Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting at the Indiana University Bloomington. Ip graduated in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, receiving the highest award of the year, under the supervision of Uroš Lajovic and

Johannes Wildner. As an opera conductor, Ip has conducted operas such as Carmen, Die Zauberflöte, Der Fliegende Holländer and Norma. As a choral conductor, she served as the Music Director of Chorus Delicti Wien for seven years and worked with numerous local and international choirs.

Her highlights include performing the role of Rosina in The Barber of Seville with both the Aspen Opera Center and the Mediterranean Opera Festival, the title role in the world premiere of Pierangelo Valtinoni’s Alice in Wonderland at the 2021 Hong Kong Arts Festival, and her Carnegie Hall debut in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with the Cecilia Chorus of New York. Yau was named “My Favourite Young Music Maker” on Radio Television Hong Kong in a public vote. Praised for his “deliciously deep and rich” voice (The Birmingham Post), Michael C.T. Lam was awarded the Gil Rodriguez Scholarship by Opéra de Baugé for his outstanding contributions to its operatic season in 2019. He studied music and was trained at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Hungary. He has regularly performed in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany and other European countries. Passionate about opera, he has sung more than 30 operatic roles including the title roles of Macbeth, Don Pasquale, Giulio Cesare and Il barbiere di Siviglia. He also sang the role of Konfuzius in Gustav Mak’s Die Legende von Konfuzius with the Budapest MÁV Symphony Orchestra in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in 2022.

Lyric baritone Caleb Woo graduated from the Eastman School of Music in New York (Master of Music degree), Chung Chi Divinity School (Master's degree) and Baptist University (Bachelor’s degree). He is now serving at the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingan University and the Education University of Hong Kong as an instructor, adjunct lecturer, assistant professor and artist in residence.

Aaron Kwan recently graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as a baritone under the teaching of Albert Lim. He is currently studying with David Quah as a tenor. During his studies at the HKAPA, Kwan received a number of scholarships including the Cecil Leong Scholarship, the Hong Kong Children’s Choir Scholarship, the Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir Scholarship and the Music Connect Scholarship. In 2018, Kwan won the Espoir Prize in the Lieder Group at the 19th Osaka International Music Competition.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, baritone HoWang Michael Yuen has been a musician all his life. He obtained his Bachelor of Music from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and then studied his Master of Music in Vocal Performance at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, graduating with distinction. HoWang’s recent performance in the role of Sasha in Cherry Town, Moscow by the Welsh National Youth Opera marked his emergence as a successful young baritone. He was recently admitted to the David Seligman Opera School at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and will start intensive opera training in autumn 2023.

Ashley Chui is a mezzosoprano based in Hong Kong. She has portrayed opera roles including Carmen and Mercedes in Carmen. Besides opera performances, Chui has collaborated as a soloist with the International Chamber Orchestra of America, the Oberlin in Italy, and more. She won the second prize at the 2013 Yokohama International Music Competition and the special prize at the 2022 IseShima International Singing Competition. Chiu earned her Bachelor of Music in Classical Voice from the Manhattan School of Music.

Amanda Ng studied at the Royal College of Music, London (Master of Music in Vocal Performance) with Veronica Campbell; and at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Bachelor of Arts in Music) with Chan Siu-kwan. In 2019, she was selected as one of the city’s Young Music Makers by RTHK Radio 4 with the title of “Adjudicators’ Choice”. She also won the third prize in the senior vocal category at the 20th Osaka International Music Competition. She has been repeatedly invited by the Hong Kong Economic Trade Office to give performances with her trio around Europe.

Frankie Fung Yat-hei has been studying with renowned Italian soprano Isabel Gentile and baritone Roberto Abbondanza. After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Hong Kong, Fung pursued a Master’s degree in Chamber Vocal Music at the G. Briccialdi High Institute of Musical Study in Terni, Italy, under the tutorship of Abbondanza. During his studies in Italy, Fung performed in different cities such as Castel Viscardo, Porano and Perugia.

Internationally acclaimed violinist Ruda Lee made her concerto debut when, at the age of six, she became the youngest winner of the World Symphony Orchestra Competition. Born in Seoul, South Korea, her music career started with great success at many local and international competitions, and her first composition won the Seoul President’s Award at the age of 12. Lee has appeared at prestigious occasions such as the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors gala in Washington D.C., where she performed with Yo Yo Ma and Pamela Frank in front of US President Barack Obama.

Bob Hui Wing-hang began learning the flute when he was 9. He was awarded the Bachelor of Music (Honours) with First Class Honour from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. As an orchestral player, Bob performed as Principal Flute with the Asian Youth Orchestra. He was also invited to perform with the Guiyang Symphony Orchestra, Opera Hong Kong Orchestra and Musica Viva. Currently he is a regular guest flautist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.

林嘉奇從七歲開始學習雙簧 管。林 氏 於香港演藝學院主修 雙簧管,師承姚桑琳教授,並 於 2014 年畢業,獲得雙簧管演 奏高級文憑及音樂學士(榮譽) 學位。2017 年和 2018 年,林氏 受到管樂雅集邀請到法國五 月 藝術節演出。林嘉奇現為香港 城市室樂團合奏雙簧管及英國 管首席。

Lam Ka Ki began oboe lessons from the age of seven. He majored in oboe performance at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) and graduated in 2014 with an Advanced Diploma and a Bachelor of Music (Honours) Degree. At the HKAPA he studied oboe under Professor Yiu Song-lam and performed in masterclasses led by Christian Schmitt, Gordon Hunt, and Maurice Bourgue. In 2017 and 2018, he performed with the Hong Kong Wind Kamerata at the Le French May Festival. Kelvin Lam is currently the Tutti Oboist and Principal English Horn player of City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong.

何晉業,本地年青單簧管演奏 家。於香港演藝學院完成學 士學位,其後獲獎學金前赴曼 哈頓音樂學院完成碩士學位課 程。何晉業活躍於表演舞台, 現為香港交響管樂團之首席單 簧管。他亦受邀於廣州交響樂 團、香港歌劇院樂團、香港 管弦樂團擔任合約樂手,並曾 為 Hong Kong Quintessence 成 員之一。

Ho Chun-yip, an active young professional clarinetist from Hong Kong, recently finished his Master’s degree of Music at the Manhattan School of Music under a scholarship and earned his undergraduate degree from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. As an active performer, Ho now plays principal clarinet in the Hong Kong Symphonic Winds. He has also performed with various orchestras and ensembles such as the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, the Opera Hong Kong Orchestra, the Hong Kong String Orchestra and the Hong Kong Quintessence Quintet.

梁國章分別在德國、美國、加 拿大及日本國際音樂比賽獲得 一等獎的殊榮。他亦常在不同 的大學及薩克管活動作演出或 大師班。梁氏是音樂兒童基金 會音樂總監、香港國際單簧管 及薩克斯管協會副會長,以及 香港管弦樂團和香港小交響樂 團的特約樂師。

Jacky Leung has won first prizes in various international music competitions in Germany, USA, Canada and Japan. He was also invited to perform and conduct masterclasses in different universities. Jacky is the Music Director of the Music Children Foundation, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong International Single Reed Association, freelance saxophonist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.

鄧灝威於香港土生土長,畢業 於香港浸會大學中文系,以及 香港演藝學院戲劇學院導演系 (一級榮譽)。曾為中英劇團駐 團導演,現為自由身劇場工作 者。熱愛音樂,喜愛電影,鍾 情閱讀,近來迷戀攝影。

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Tang Ho-wai studied Chinese Language and Literature at the Hong Kong Baptist University. He then further studied Directing at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He was an resident director of Chung Ying Theatre and currently a freelance theatre worker. He loves music, movies and reading, and has recently become obsessed with photography.

Kitty Callister originally studied Fashion Textile Design at the University of Brighton and spent six years working in the men's tailoring department at Glyndebourne Festival Opera. In 2011, she finished studying an MA in Theatre Design at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Her previous engagements include set and costume design for The Trial of Elgan Jones (Theatr na nÓg).

Ryan Lo

勞正然現為香港演藝學院駐院 藝術家(設計)。2017 年畢業 於香港演藝學院,主修佈景及 服裝設計,除表演設計外,對 展覽、主題公園、戶外節日裝 飾等設計亦有涉獵。近期參 與的舞台製作包括: 香港話劇 團《夜鶯玫瑰》(佈景及服裝設 計)、艾菲斯劇團《斑馬》(佈 景設計)。

Ryan Lo is a design artist in residence at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He graduated from the HKAPA in 2017, majoring in Set and Costume Design, and has since done design work in various areas including performances, exhibitions, theme park events and festive outdoor installations. Lo’s recent performance design work includes Rose of Nightingale by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre (set and costume design), To Dye or Not to Dye by Fiesta Space (set design).

程凱雯畢業於香港城市大學並 取得創意媒體學院理學士學 位,並於 2016 年畢業於香港演 藝學院,主修舞台佈景及服裝 設計。現為自由身舞台工作者。

近期服裝設計作品包括: 中英 劇團《金龍》、風車草劇團《騙 局喜劇》、香港演藝學院舞蹈學 院夏季演出《 COVEN 》。

Cheryl Ching Hoi-man originally received a Bachelor of Science in Creative Media from the City University of Hong Kong. In 2016 she graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Set and Costume Design. She is currently a freelance stage worker. Her set and costume design work includes Der goldene Drache (Chung Ying Theatre), The Comedy of Terrors! (Windmill Grass Theatre), COVEN (HKAPA School of Dance).

傑克‧威爾薛

Jake Wiltshire has extensive experience as a lighting designer in his native UK and worldwide. He has worked with major opera companies and festivals including the Welsh National Opera, the English National Opera and the Garsington Opera, as well as nearly all of the UK’s leading music conservatoires. Internationally, he’s worked on a variety of productions in Beijing, throughout North America and across Europe. His engagements this year include Andre Chenier for the St. Galler Festspiele, Switzerland.

陳鈞至,耶魯戲劇學院藝術 碩士,主修設計。留美期間 憑《第十二夜》獲康乃狄克 州評論人獎傑出燈光設計提 名。他憑《審美與人的自由》 入圍第二十六屆 ifva 媒體藝 術組,亦於德國多蒙特劇院 附設之 Academy for Theater and Digitality 研究人工智能於劇場設 計之應用。

Samuel Chan received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama, where he majored in Design. His work on Twelfth Night was nominated in the category of Outstanding Lighting Design at the Connecticut Critics Circle Awards. His installation Aesthetics and Freedom of Human Beings was a finalist in the Media Art Category in the ifva Awards in 2020. Chan is a fellow of the Academy for Theatre and Digitality of Theatre Dortmund, where he is researching the application of artificial intelligence in theatrical design.

Max Pappenheim is a sound designer and composer based in south London who is an associate artist of The Faction and Silent Opera. His work in the opera includes Bluebeard's Castle (Theatre of Sound),  Giovanni (Silent Opera), Miranda (Opéra Comique, Paris and European tour); Hansel and Gretel (BYO/Opera HollandPark).

夏恩蓓

夏恩蓓畢業於香港演藝學院舞 台音響及音樂錄音系。現時為 多個本地及海外舞台製作擔任 音響設計師及工程師,並獲邀 請擔任音樂節的音響顧問。近 期作品包括: 自由空間 X 香港 話劇團《大狀王》、香港中樂團 《極》和中英劇團《穿 Kenzo 的 女人》(獲第 30 屆香港舞台劇獎 最佳音響設計獎)。

Ha Yan-pui graduated from the Theatre, Sound and Music Recording Department at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She has worked as a sound designer and engineer for many local and overseas productions, and as a sound consultant for various musical festivals. Her recent design work includes The Impossible Trial for Freespace x Hong Kong Repertory Theatre; Ji for the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra; The Woman In Kenzo for Chung Ying Theatre (winner of Best Sound Design at The 30th Hong Kong Drama Awards).

Christopher Reid is an awardwinning sound designer based in London. He has more than 20 years’ experience working on a variety of theatrical productions in the West End, on Broadway and around the world. His work as a sound designer in the theatre includes The Inheritance at the Young Vic, West End and Broadway, the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company's Hamlet at RADA, and Pinocchio.

李玨熙現為獨立製作人,涉足 音樂、劇場、舞蹈、多媒體 創作及展覽。近期項目策劃及 製作合作單位包括: 香港藝術 節、西九文化區管理局表演藝 術(音樂與戶外)、香港演藝 學院戲劇學院、大館(表演藝 術)、東九文化中心、香港展能 藝術會、港大繆思樂季及太古 坊等。他畢業於香港浸會大學 音樂系,及後取得英國皇家音 樂學院演奏科學碩士學位。

Michael Lee is currently an independent producer, involved in projects covering music, theatre, dance, multimedia and exhibitions. He has collaborated with organisations including the Hong Kong Arts Festival, West Kowloon Cultural District (music and outdoors), the Drama School of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Tai Kwun (performing arts).

Lee graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Studies from the Hong Kong Baptist University and later obtained a Master’s degree in Performance Science from the Royal College of Music in London.

Gloria Ngai received her degree from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and her Master’s degree from Central Saint Martins. Ngai is a widely recognised production manager in opera and international touring productions. She has collaborated with different companies including The Globe, Sell A Door (UK), Tall Stories Company, Lyric Hammersmith (UK) and Opera Monte Carlo.

鋼琴合作藝術家張頌欣於加拿 大讀書及工作。他是一名排 練指導、聲樂指導、室內樂 音樂家和指揮。2016 年 3 月, 他與香港藝術節合作,擔任安 娜.涅翠柯亞洲巡迴演出的排 練指導。近年,張頌欣成立 DictionLab 語中作樂,在社區 教授不同語言的發音學,推動 並分享藝術歌曲與詩詞的關係 和重要性。

Collaborative pianist Ronald  Cheung studied and worked in Canada, and enjoys a versatile career as répétiteur, vocal coach, chamber musician and conductor. In March 2016, he served as répétiteur for Anna Netrebko’s Asia tour in collaboration with the Hong Kong Arts Festival.
