第五十一屆香港藝術節隆重舉行,可 喜可賀。

逾半個世紀以來,藝術節每年均呈獻 多姿多彩的文藝節目,由古典音樂、 歌劇、戲劇,以至舞蹈、多媒體項 目等,包羅萬有,令觀眾大飽眼福。

今屆藝術節以《收音機與茱麗葉》及 《春之祭》芭蕾舞表演揭開序幕,兩 齣經典作品經由著名編舞家愛德華· 克魯格重新編排,加上斯洛文尼亞 國家歌劇院馬里博爾芭蕾舞團傾力演 出,萬眾矚目;約五星期後,歐洲頂 尖交響樂團—德國班貝格交響樂團將 登台獻技,為今年藝術節畫上圓滿句 號。其間上演的焦點節目還有: 國 際星級女高音安娜·涅翠柯與丈夫男 高音尤西夫·伊瓦佐夫聯袂表演的音 樂會;由藝術家威廉·肯特里奇精心 製作、南非木偶劇團和比利時里切卡 爾古樂團奇妙演繹的蒙特威爾第歌劇 《尤利西斯歸鄉記》;由芭蕾天后娜塔 麗亞·奧斯波娃領銜主演的芭蕾巨 星之《「世」不可擋》及傳奇舞姬之 《趾尖》;以及國際鋼琴大賽冠軍劉曉 禹的演奏會。

藝術節向來十分重視本地演藝人才, 致力讓他們一展才華。今屆藝術節亦 會上演多個粵劇節目,包括《竹林愛 傳奇》、「毛俊輝.粵劇情」、《畫皮》 (精新版),以及「短篇粵劇—戲說 八德」; 並帶來其他本地作品,包括 《飯戲攻心》踏台版、《末戀.無愛合 約》、舞蹈歌劇《兩生花》等等,定 必精彩萬分,不容錯過。

大眾還可通過藝術節,體驗繽紛的藝 術魅力。法國食蟻獸沉浸式藝術工作 室創作的《第一步》,會邀請觀眾互 動共舞;在大館舉行的一系列免費藝 術科技節目,以及「無限亮」計劃, 亦會讓公眾參與其中。「無限亮」計 劃由本地和海外不同能力的藝術家擔 綱演出,鼓勵青少年衝破界限,探索

I would like to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 51st edition.

For more than half a century now, the Arts Festival has enthralled audiences with a superb annual programme of arts and culture performances embracing classical music and opera, theatre, dance, multimedia and a great deal more.

This year’s Arts Festival programme opens with the Slovene National Theatre Maribor’s ballet performances of Radio and Juliet and Le Sacre du Printemps, two classics re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Edward Clug. It closes, nearly five weeks later, with a concert by Germany’s Bamberg Symphony, one of Europe’s greatest orchestras. Other highlights include Anna Netrebko, one of the world’s great sopranos, performing with her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov; artist William Kentridge’s remarkable production of Monteverdi’s opera, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, brought to life by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and Belgium’s Ricercar Consort periodinstrument ensemble; Ballet Superstars’ Force of Nature and Legendary Ballerina

in Two Feet featuring supreme ballerina Natalia Osipova; and concerts by the international award-winning piano virtuoso Bruce Liu.

As always, the Festival shines a spotlight on standout artists from Hong Kong. This year’s Cantonese opera offerings include Love in the Bamboo Grove, Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, The Painted Skin (Refined Edition) and Virtues and Morality—Four Cantonese Operas. Local productions including Table For Six on Stage, Loveless Romance and Love Streams are sure to be among this year’s Festival highlights.

Several programmes invite public participation as well, including the First Steps participatory dance performances staged by France’s Tamanoir Immersive Studio, as well as Tai Kwun’s free series of arts tech productions and the Festival’s No Limits programme, led by local and international artists of varying abilities. No Limits’ offerings emphasise youth exploration, as does the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival with its school tours, preperformance workshops and special programming. And then there is the Festival PLUS creative activities that bring artists and audiences together in communities throughout Hong Kong.

I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its inspired commitment to the arts and to Hong Kong’s continuing rise as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. My thanks, as well, to the Festival’s many generous sponsors and donors.

I am delighted to welcome you to the 51st edition of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. As the city recovers from the disruption of the pandemic, the Festival is returning with an array of live performances featuring top-notch artists from Hong Kong and across the world. Despite the boundless possibilities offered by the internet, attending performances in person remains an irreplaceable experience. It gives me great pleasure to share this collective experience with you today.

The Festival is made possible by the generosity of our supporters.

I wish to thank the HKSAR Government, via the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, for the annual subvention which underpins our long-standing work. I am also grateful for the ongoing contributions from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, as well as corporate sponsors, charitable foundations and individual donors. My sincere thanks go

to the participating artists for their dedication to bringing the best to our audiences, especially those returning after previous cancellations due to the pandemic.

Our theme this year, “Coming Back, Moving Forward”, represents our determination to come back in full force after several years of uncertainties caused by the pandemic. After five decades of hard work and dedication, the Festival has established itself as a premier arts event in the region and an important international arts festival. We are honoured to carry this legacy forward, while advancing our multifaceted work to stay relevant in the present. In the 51st edition, we discover creative voices through new renditions of masterpieces, cross-disciplinary collaborations and commissioned productions— all of which showcase the breadth and endless possibilities of the performing arts, taking us one step

forward in this journey of exploration. Beyond exceptional performances, we are also offering a series of auxiliary PLUS programmes to enhance audience engagement and provide deeper insights into our programmes. Our strong commitment to arts education is seen in the extensive outreach activities aimed at inspiring the younger generation of Hong Kong through promoting quality arts.

香港藝術節於 1973 年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的文化 盛事,於每年 2、 3 月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國際藝術家 的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育活動,致力豐 富香港的文化生活。

香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2022/ 23 財政年度預計收

入(包括第 51 屆香港藝術節及 2023 年「無限亮」)約港 幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔總收入約 18%,另外約 24%需來自票房收入,約 43%則需依賴來自 各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊助和捐款。預計餘 下的約 15%則來自其他收入,包括政府針對捐款和贊助收 入而提供的配對資助。

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2022/23 (including the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2023 “No Limits”) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 18% of the Festival's total income. Around 24% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 43% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. The HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres, such as*:

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family – A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina

成立 30 年來,已為逾 810, 000 位本地中學生及大專生提供 藝術體驗活動。藝術節近年亦開展多項針對大、中、小學 生的藝術教育活動,包括由國際及本地藝術家主持的示範 講座及工作坊、學生展演、演前講座、公開彩排、以及欣 賞藝術節演出。同時,通過「學生票捐助計劃」,藝術節 每年提供約 10, 000 張半價學生票。

香港藝術節每年主辦一系列多元化並深入社區的「加料節 目」,例如電影放映、示範講座、大師班、工作坊、座談 會、後台參觀、展覽、藝人談、文化導賞團等,鼓勵觀眾 與藝術家互動接觸。

2019 年正式開展,透過一系列的演出及多元的 教育及社區外展節目,「無限亮」致力創造共融空間,讓不 同能力人士均可以一同欣賞、參與、擁抱藝術。

Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake co-commissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera.

The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 30 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 810,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.

The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

The HKAF actively promotes inclusiveness and understanding via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

The HKAF officially launched the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation in 2022 to provide greater financial security and longterm sustainability for the Festival. Donations to the Foundation will help the Festival to present large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for. (2023

毛俊輝 FREDRIC MAO

毛俊輝是資深戲劇藝術家及著 名舞台導演,早年赴美進修 戲劇並長期在當地從事專業演 與導工作,回港後出任香港演 藝學院戲劇學院表演系主任, 為本地演藝界培育眾多出色的 接班人。

他於 2001 年至 2008 年擔任公司 化後的香港話劇團的首任藝術 總監,卸任時獲頒「桂冠導演」 名銜。多年來執導不少具香港 文化色彩、叫好叫座的劇目, 其中包括《酸酸甜甜香港地》、 《還魂香 / 梨花夢》、《新傾城之 戀》、《情話紫釵》、《杜老誌》 等等。曾為中國國家京劇院執 導改編自《德齡與慈禧》的京 劇《曙色紫禁城》,又為康文 署主辦的中國戲曲節導演粵劇 《李後主》新譯本。

2014 年至 2016 年獲邀出任香港 演藝學院戲曲學院創院院長。

2018 年為香港藝術節改編及 導演的粵劇《百花亭贈劍》創 新版本深受歡迎,促成藝術節

四十七年來首次連續兩季重演 同一劇目,更於 2019 年先後赴 深圳、上海及廣州巡演,獲得 熱烈迴響。

Renowned theatre practitioner and stage director Fredric Mao studied theatre and practiced professionally in the US, later returning to Hong Kong as the Head of Acting at the School of Drama of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), where he developed generations of local young talent. He became the first Artistic Director of the incorporated Hong Kong Repertory Theatre (HKRT) in 2001 and was bestowed the honourific title of HKRT’s “Director Laureate” upon his departure in 2008. Mao has directed many distinguished stage productions with a Hong Kong cultural flair, such as Sweet & Sour Hong Kong, Secret of Resurrection, Love in a Fallen City, The Liaisons and Tonnochy. Mao directed Forbidden City at

Dawn, an adaptation of De Ling and Empress Dowager Cixi, for the China National Peking Opera Company. He also adapted and directed a new Cantonese opera production of The Last Emperor of Tang at the Leisure and Cultural Services Department’s Chinese Opera Festival.

At the invitation of the HKAPA, Mao became the Founding Chair of its newly established School of Chinese Opera from 2014 to 2016. In 2018, Mao adapted and directed a reboot version of Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, a classic Cantonese opera, at the 46th Hong Kong Arts Festival, the success of which prompted the Festival to restage the same programme the following year— the first time in the history of the Festival. The play was performed in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Guangzhou to widespread acclaim.

原定於 2022 年香港藝術節演出 的《粵劇新姿創作坊》因疫情 之故被迫取消,但當藝術節邀 請我們在 2023 年重新推出這個 節目時,我便進一步在這幾個 劇目上作出新的探索,找出符 合各劇目特色的演繹,而打造 了今年這個《毛俊輝•粵劇情》 的演出。

我的選材包括《蝴蝶杯》的 〈藏舟〉、《孝莊皇后與多爾袞》 的〈密誓〉,以及《蝶影紅梨 記》的〈窺醉/亭會〉,雖然這 三齣折子戲都是描寫两性之間 的感情世界,但差別很大,可 以從不同的切入點去品嘗幾個 不同調子的演繹。例如〈藏舟 一夜〉,就是通過演員的唱做唸 圢的基本功將經典再現,但加 上舞台的調度,投影與燈光的 設計,希望營造出一種純屬戲 曲的寫意情懷。〈密誓背後〉則

強調人物角色的描繪,一對曾 經相愛的男女如何因權力、地 位、私慾而帶出真真假假的面 貌,展現出粵劇舞台較少見的 人物個性化的演繹。至於〈我 的窺醉〉則嘗試透過一個現代 女子的視角,與觀眾一起重新 體驗這經典的愛情故事,或許 帶來另一番滋味。

作為一個戲曲導演,我不僅關 注怎樣指導演員演繹好故事和 角色,還需要是對不同的劇目 有其獨立的構思和處理手法, 希望為粵劇做到一種「創造 性的傳承」。對於戲的主旨精 神、說故事的方式、表演的探 索,以至製作上的美學都是身 為導演值得探研的課題。由於 香港粵劇長久以來沒有推行導 演制,所以不但表演者對導演 的工作陌生,甚至傳統的粵劇 觀眾對此也不甚理解,所以有

個像香港藝術節這樣的平台, 能夠讓人認識導演的創作尤其 寶貴,而 2018、2019 年兩度 公演的《百花亭贈劍》就正正 是我們在這方面成功合作的最 佳例子。

《毛俊輝•粵劇情》可以說是我 繼續為粵劇探索前路的一個實 踐過程。希望我和我的團隊所 付出的努力最終能得到觀眾的 積極回應,包括不同角度的意 見,這樣必然有助啟發我們, 讓我們共同為香港的粵劇創作 打開更廣闊的天空。

Originally scheduled for the Hong Kong Arts Festival 2022, the performance titled Cantonese Opera Creative Studio was cancelled due to the pandemic. However, after the Hong Kong Arts Festival invited us to perform the three excerpts in 2023, I explored them further to find new interpretations and finally created Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023 for the Festival this year.

I have chosen to perform Hiding in the Boat adapted from The Butterfly Cup, Secret Vow adapted from Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang and Dorgon, and Peeking at the Drunk adapted from The Butterfly and Red Pear Blossoms. Although these three excerpts are all about the relationship between the two sexes, they are very different and can be interpreted and appreciated from different perspectives. For example, in Hiding in the Boat, the basic stage skills of Cantonese opera are demonstrated through the recital, the acting and the stage movements by the actor and actress. Through the stage modulation, projection and lighting design, we want to create a purely theatrical mood. Secret Vow emphasises the portrayal of the characters: how a man and woman who once loved each other are brought to life by power, status and personal desires, showing a threedimensional interpretation of the characters that is rarely seen on the Cantonese opera stage. As for Peeking at the Drunk, it

is an attempt to re-experience the classic love story from the perspective of a modern young woman, with some surprising choices, which may allow the audience to appreciate it from a new angle and with affection.

As a Cantonese opera director, I am not only concerned with directing the actors and actresses to perform their roles and the story as best as possible, but I also need to have my own ideas and approaches to different plays because I aspire to achieve a "creative heritage" for Cantonese opera. The theme of the play, the method of storytelling, the exploration of acting, and the aesthetics of the production are all worthy subjects for a director to explore. As the director system is largely absent in Hong Kong's Cantonese opera scene, not only are the performers unfamiliar with the duties of a director, but even traditional Cantonese opera audiences do not understand it very well. This is why it is particularly valuable to have a platform like the Hong Kong Arts Festival where people can get to know more about the director's work. The production of Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers at the Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2018 and 2019 is a perfect example of our successful collaboration in this regard.

Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023 can be seen as part of my empirical process for exploring the future of Cantonese opera. I hope that my efforts and those of my team will be well

received by the audience, and that the different perspectives will help inspire us so we can work together to open up a wider horizon for the creation of Cantonese opera in Hong Kong.

田玉川偶遊龜山,恰逢盧總督之子盧世寬打死漁 夫胡彥,玉川不平,將盧世寬打死,遭盧府追 緝。玉川被胡彦之女胡鳳蓮相救,並在舟中訂下 婚約而暫時分別。鳳蓮持玉川所贈的蝴蝶杯往田 家求助,為父鳴冤。

As Tian Yuchuan wanders on Turtle Mountain, he witnesses General Lu’s son, Lu Shikuan, killing a fisherman named Hu Yan. Tian avenges the fisherman by killing Lu Shikuan and is sought for prosecution by the Lu family, but is rescued by Hu Yan’s daughter, Hu Fenglian. They briefly part ways after their engagement on a boat. Fenglian seeks help from the Tian family, showing them the butterfly cup Yuchuan gifted her, and decides to seek justice for her deceased father.

孝莊皇后初為清太宗皇太極之莊妃,皇太極駕崩 後,她與皇太極十四弟多爾袞聯手擁立幼兒福 臨為帝,是為順治帝。孝莊與多爾袞早年曾相 戀,福臨登基後,多爾袞以攝政王身份迫孝莊再 續前緣。

The Empress Dowager was the consort of Emperor Taizong of the Qing dynasty, Hong Taiji. After his death, she joins hands with his brother, Dorgon, in enthroning her young son, Fulin, who later becomes the Shunzhi Emperor. Since they used to be in love, Dorgon, serving as Prince Regent, forces the Empress Dowager back into a relationship.

Zhao Ruzhou, a talented scholar from Shandong, and Xie Suqiu, a famous courtesan from Bianjing, have been soulmates for three years and are eager to see each other. To flee from the persecution of Prime Minister Wang, Suqiu hides in the house of Ruzhou’s friend. In an attempt to keep her identity a secret, Suqiu decides to pass herself off as the late Mayor Wang’s daughter, Yulian.

無懼與現代碰撞 毛俊輝重構粵劇

Theatre Veteran Reimagines a Traditional Art Form

近年來,粵劇似乎正努力走進公眾視線,吸引年輕觀眾以及創作革新成了粵劇界的一大命題。但如何 拿捏?如何在創新之餘保留傳統?中間可能有千百個答案,而毛俊輝「毛 sir 」便是其中一個身體力 行的深耕者。這次由他一手打造的《毛俊輝·粵劇情》,就以三段戲,三種實踐,力求為粵劇發展闖出 一片天。

Extensive efforts have been made to revive Cantonese opera in recent years, including new banknote designs featuring Cantonese opera stars and the construction of the landmark Xiqu Centre. Yet the traditional art form’s future remains uncertain, as senior citizens continue to make up most of the audience. Practitioners have been tasked with bringing forth reforms of the sector and promoting the traditional art among young people. But how should this be done? How do we strike a balance between the old and the new? For years, theatre veteran Fredric Mao has attempted to answer these important questions. And his most recent creation, Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, which comprises three excerpts, is an attempt to open up new possibilities for the genre.

具有開放靈魂的粵劇 在人文薈萃的上海成長的毛俊 輝,自小跟隨父母接觸中國各 大地方戲,由此孕育出一套海 納百川的戲劇哲學。他形容, 自己一直在尋找自己的根; 而 在尋找過程中,漸漸發現自己 最感興趣的還是粵劇。到底粵 劇有何魅力?他解釋:「比之 發展工整成熟的京劇,大雜燴 式融合了南、北精粹的粵劇反 而更靈活,更具開放性。」

想當然爾,《毛俊輝·粵劇情》 也活用了這種靈活性進行了大 幅度的實驗。但毛俊輝強調, 自己做的始終是粵劇,不是甚 麼實驗劇場:「以前的人看戲 是種消閒,動輒就看上三個鐘 頭以上,現在的人哪有這種時 間?所以我們的製作更要物 有所值,一部戲頂多兩小時多 一點。」

豐富粵劇角色個性

愛之深,自然責之切,毛俊輝 亦不諱言粵劇有其局限性:「傳 統粵劇講的是行當: 生、旦、 淨、丑,一看便知忠奸; 但現 代觀眾想看的是有層次、有邏 輯的故事,黑白分明、面譜化 的表演已難以再滿足他們。」

於是他索性變換思維,從現代 劇場的角度出發,重新審視何 謂「粵劇」。

在鋪排上,三齣折子戲由古入 今,層層遞進:〈藏舟一夜〉回 溯根本,僅在燈光、畫面等舞 台效果上追求新觀感,意在襯 托出演員的傳統身段;〈密誓背 後〉原本是講述孝莊皇后與多

爾袞的一段愛情故事,毛俊輝 決定揮慧劍,斬迷思,展現人 物心理的暗湧;〈我的窺醉〉則 更進一步,從一個現代女子的 眼光來解讀唐滌生名作《蝶影 紅梨記》,帶領觀眾由框框外的 全新角度「窺探」戲曲。

即便在製作中大玩不同敘事和 視覺元素,毛俊輝認為粵劇說 到底還是一個「人」字:「以前 的戲固然好看,但既定一套的 格式在這瞬息萬變的時代是不 夠用的,所以我們要發掘人物 的複雜性還有他們背後帶出來 的視角。雖然孝莊皇后和多爾 袞是真心相愛,但他們同時也 愛自己的權力,不可能為愛情 犧牲一切; 汝州的痴心,現代 的素秋又會怎樣接收?我們又 會怎樣去看經典呢?——這樣 的人物塑造和戲劇張力是以往 粵劇不曾有的。」

儘管不斷以不同方式解構傳統 粵劇,其作品、語氣中卻難掩 毛俊輝對粵劇滿滿的愛。「所 謂創新不是要丟棄舊的東西, 而是要在舊的東西裏尋找新的 出路。」

Openness is of the essence

While growing up in Shanghai, China’s cultural hub and a city where different cultures converge, Mao was exposed to different forms of Chinese opera from various parts of the country, an experience which greatly informed his own philosophy of theatre. He speaks of a restless search for his roots, a process which uncovered his ultimate passion for Cantonese opera. “Compared with Beijing opera, which embodies creative sophistication and maturity, Cantonese opera has proven to be more flexible,” says Mao. “As a blend of the South and the North, it has a natural openness to it.”

This flexibility assisted the drastic experiments involved in the production of Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, although Mao stresses that he is ultimately committed to Cantonese opera, not experimental theatre. A lot of thought went into deciding what elements were included in the experiments. “In the past, going to operas was a common pastime,” Mao says. “People were used to spending three hours or more in the theatre. But no one has that much time to spare these days, not to mention audiences now have very different viewing habits and tastes. So our productions have to be worth people’s time and shouldn’t go on for more than around two hours.”

Building complexity

Despite his strong passion for Cantonese opera, Mao is also quick to admit its limits. “Traditional Cantonese opera is all about the hangdang system, meaning the characters do not vary beyond the set roles of sheng, dan, jing and chou. The hero and the villain are obvious from the start. But audiences today look for more nuanced stories; the dichotomous and stereotyped performances are hardly convincing anymore.” Amid these changing times, Mao did not hesitate to explore new perspectives when reviewing the meaning of Cantonese opera, particularly from a contemporary theatre perspective.

The three opera excerpts in Cantonese Opera Classics

Circa 2023 are presented in a linear manner, from the most traditional to the most modern, taking the audience on a

journey through Mao’s unique creative mind. Adapted from the classic The Butterfly Cup, “Hiding the Boat” preserves the original story but takes on a new look and feel in terms of stage effects, such as the lighting and mise-en-scène, to amplify the actors’ movements and artistry. In “Secret Vow”, Mao probes deeper into the psychology of the characters, revisiting the originally rosy love story between Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang and Dorgon from the Qing Dynasty, bringing to light the turbulence that lay beneath the surface. And “Peeking at the Drunk”, Mao’s reinterpretation of Tong Tik-sang’s The Butterfly and Red Pear Blossoms, reimagines the classic tale from the perspective of a modern woman.

To Mao, the heavy reworking of narratives and visual elements has all been done in service of the characters, who remain the heart and soul of Cantonese

opera. “Classics will stay classics, but they might not offer the best storytelling in such fast-changing times. We must endeavour to cultivate complexity in the characters and mature the perspectives they embody. Such as with the story of Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang and Dorgon—it wouldn’t make any sense for them to give up their power and authority for love. In another case, Peeking at the Drunk, how should a modern woman deal with being courted by a feudal man? This unprecedented effort in character building and creating dramatic tension challenges the way we reimagine the classics.”

Despite having been in constant search for new ways to reinterpret the classics, Mao has always loved Cantonese opera in its entirety, old or new. “To be innovative doesn’t mean you discard what’s old,” he emphasises. “It is a way to unearth new angles and reflect on the value of traditions from there.”

洪海生於廣州,畢業於廣東粵劇學校及香港演藝學院戲曲學院。他 曾為紅豆粵劇團主要演員,主攻文武小生,師承粵劇表演藝術家羅 品超,深得劉洵、許堅信、鄺宏基、胡芝風、麥惠文等名師指導, 其代表劇目有《三打白骨精》、《拜將台》、《馬上良緣》、《五郎救 弟》、《武松》等。2017 年創辦碧海粵劇團,致力保存與宏揚中國 傳統文化。

Hong Hai was born in Guangzhou and graduated from the Guangdong Cantonese Opera School and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts' School of Chinese Opera. Hong was a leading actor in the Guangzhou Hongdou Cantonese Opera Troupe, and mainly plays wenwusheng (male civil and military) and xiaosheng (young leading male) roles. He studied under Cantonese opera performer Lo Pan-chiu, and was mentored by veterans such as Liu Xun, Hui Kin-shun, Kuang Hongji, Hu Zhifeng and Mak Waiman. His notable repertoire includes The Monkey King Thrice Beats the Bony Ghost, Arena, Warriors' Romance, Yang Wulang Saving His Younger Brother and Wu Song. He founded the Azure Seas Cantonese Traditional Theatre in 2017 with a vision to preserve and promote traditional Chinese culture.

曉瑜,畢業於香港演藝學院中國戲曲首屆學士學位課程,以及香港 中文大學文化及宗教文化碩士學位課程。主攻閨門旦、青衣、刀馬 旦。其扮相端莊大方,聲線甜美,戲路廣闊。現於香港各個劇團擔 任長劇及折子戲的主要角色。

Xiaoyu is one of the first students to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree in Chinese Opera at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She also obtained a Master of Arts Degree in Religious Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She mainly plays the roles of guimen dan (maiden), qingyi (young to middleaged female), and daoma dan (young female warrior). Known for her mellow voice, she now plays main roles in full-length plays and Cantonese opera excerpts with different troupes in Hong Kong.

衛駿輝女士從事演藝事業逾卅五年,畢業於香港八和粵劇學院。近 年積極參與幕後工作,其中以《花木蘭》及《木蘭傳說》最令人津 津樂道。其戲曲風格創新大膽,又不失傳統韻味,獲各方讚賞,口 碑載道。

2021 年她得到青年同行基金及其創辦人吳仕福先生,GBS,太平紳 士的支持及鼓勵,創作一套以抗疫為主題的民初戲曲舞台劇《香江 號》,結合梨園子弟的團結精神,藉此為香港社會打氣。

A graduate of the Cantonese Opera Academy of Hong Kong, Wai Chun-fai has been performing Cantonese opera for more than 35 years. In recent years, she has also started working behind the scenes and her works such as Mulan and The Legend of Mulan are much loved by fans of Cantonese opera. Her bold yet traditional Cantonese opera singing style has received wide acclaim.

In 2021, Wai received financial support from the Youth Connect Foundation and its founder, George Ng Sze-fuk, GBS, JP, and produced Spirit of Hong Kong. The Cantonese opera-style musical was set in the early Republic period, with a theme of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, and aimed to inspire Hong Kong by demonstrating the solidarity among Cantonese opera performers.

林芯菱畢業於湛江市藝術學校,後應聘於佛山粵劇團。其後來港, 在香港演藝學院進修戲曲課程,並獲得多項獎學金。畢業後任職 「演藝青年粵劇團」花旦。

「十年磨一劍」,林芯菱感到藝術造詣漸漸成熟,遂成立「紅菱艷粵 劇團」,希望能演出心儀的劇目。

After graduating from the Zhanjiang Art School, Shirley Lin honed her skills in the Foshan Cantonese Opera Troupe. Later, she pursued further studies at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), and was awarded various scholarships for her outstanding performances. After graduation, she joined the Young Academy Cantonese Opera Troupe as a huadan (young female lead).

Lin has mastered a wide range of skills and has now founded the Magnificent Red Cantonese Opera Group, hoping to perform the Cantonese operas she enjoys.

王志良畢業於廣東粵劇學校,並以滙豐銀行獎學金修畢香港演藝學 院課程,2011 年加入香港演藝青年粵劇團,由創團起擔綱文武生 至 2018 年。在職期間,他擔任演藝學院粵劇應用學習課程導師。 王氏唱做俱佳,尤以腰腿功及長靠戲見長。2014 年榮獲西九戲曲 中心粵劇新星展演「優秀表演獎」;2016 年獲香港電台第五台戲 曲天地梨園之最頒發梨園新輝,同年代表演藝學院參加台灣「香港 週」演出。

Wang Zhiliang graduated from the Guangdong Cantonese Opera School and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) on an HSBC Scholarship. He joined the Hong Kong Young Academy Cantonese Opera Troupe in 2011, and has played a wenwusheng role since the troupe’s foundation in 2018. He has been an instructor for HKAPA’s Applied Learning Courses for Cantonese Opera. Wang excels in singing and acting, and specializes in yaotuigong (waist and leg technique) and changkaoxi (high-ranking military male operas). In 2014, he won the Outstanding Performance Award at the Rising Stars in Cantonese Opera Showcase organised by the West Kowloon Cultural District. In 2016, he won the RTHK 5 Best of Chinese Opera’s Rising Star Award and represented HKAPA to participate in the “Hong Kong Week” performance in Taiwan.

林穎施獲全免獎學金畢業於香港演藝學院,自香港演藝青年粵劇團 創團即擔綱正印花旦,並擔任學院應用學習課程以及全球首個全網 上粵劇課程主講導師。

她擔演多套大型古裝粵劇,參演 2018 及 2019 年香港藝術節《百花 亭贈劍》女主角。她熱心公益活動及跨界演出,曾灌錄多張唱片, 與香港乳癌基金會、東華三院、唐氏基金會等機構舉辦多個大型慈 善演出,現為穎施藝術中心主席。

Lin Yingshi graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) after being awarded a full scholarship. She has been working with the Young Academy Cantonese Opera Troupe as a zhengyin huadan (female lead) since its foundation. She also teaches at the HKAPA in Applied Learning courses and in the world’s first online Cantonese opera programme.

Lin has performed in numerous grand, costumed Cantonese operas. In 2018 and 2019, she performed in Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers at the Hong Kong Arts Festival as the female protagonist. Lin is active in community activities and interdisciplinary performances, having recorded several albums and co-organised charity performances with groups such as the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, and Hong Kong Down Syndrome Association. She is currently Chairperson of the Alis Arts Centre.

2017 年畢業於香港演藝學院,主修表演。2018 年期間任職 atelier theatre hong kong 全職演員;現為自由身工作者。

參與製作包括《杏仁豆腐心》、香港話劇團《往大馬士革之路》、法 國外亞維儂藝術節 2019《猩猩人》、聲蜚合唱節《布偶劇場─巴赫 遊學團》以及香港話劇團《傾城無方》等。《猩猩人》更獲法國外亞 維農當地媒體四星評價。

Wong Tsz-ching graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in Acting in 2017.In 2018, he was a full-time actor at atelier theatre hong kong. He is now working freelance.

His works include Heart of Almond Tofu, To Damascus, Part One of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, L’humanzee at the Festival d’Avignon OFF 2019, Puppet Theatre – Walking Bach to School at SingFest, Castle of Glass of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, with L’humanzee earning a four-star rating from local journalists at Avignon OFF.

Eric Leung graduated from the School of Drama of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree. He received the Outstanding Actor Award at the Academy for his thesis project, The Happiest Day I Lost. In 2020, he was the winner of the Outstanding Actor Award at the Hong Kong Theatre Libre for his performance in Listener. He has gained recognition for his performance in Love Avatars, Leap Day, and I Swim at Viu TV.

黎晞朗,五歲。曾參與香港話劇團劇季節目《曖昧》的演出。現為 香港話劇團戲劇學校幼兒/兒童戲劇課程學員。

Lai Hei-long is five years old. He performed in the season programme, Ambiguous, of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre. He is currently taking the toddlers’ and children’s drama courses offered by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre.

李章明是深圳市粵劇團始創人之一,是該團音樂首席、編曲和指 揮,也是香港作曲家及作詞家協會會員。2010 年代表香港參加中國 上海世博會演出,負責由毛俊輝導演的舞台劇《情話紫釵》之粵樂 設計和統籌。他還參與了 2018 年第 46 屆及 2019 年第 47 屆香港藝術 節粵劇製作,為《百花亭贈劍》進行編曲和音樂統籌,並到上海、 廣州、珠海巡迴演出。李章明現為恆青曲藝社社長。

Li Cheung-ming co-founded the Shenzhen Cantonese Opera Troupe, where he now serves as troupe master, arranger and conductor. Li is also member of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong. In 2010, Li was music designer and coordinator for Fredric Mao’s The Liaisons, a production featured on the HKSAR programme for the Shanghai World Expo 2010. In 2018 and 2019, he was the composer and music director of the Cantonese opera, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, performed at the 46th and 47th HKAF. The play was subsequently toured in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Zhuhai. He chairs the Evergreen Chinese Opera Musical Club.

陳志權,香港具代表性舞台佈景及服裝設計師。 他於 2016 至 2022 年擔任香港後台技術人員協會主席,並於香港演藝學院擔任舞台設 計系主任直至 2022 年。

最具代表性作品包括香港話劇團《浮士德》——這作品使他第三度獲 得劇協最佳佈景設計。其他作品包括大型廣東粵劇《蝶影紅梨記》 以及香港芭蕾舞團《羅密歐與朱麗葉》。

One of the most prominent set and costume designers in Hong Kong, Ricky Chan was the chairman of Hong Kong Association of Theatre Technicians and Scenographers from 2008 to 2012, and head of Theatre Design Department of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts from 2016 to 2022.

His most representative works include the award-winning Dr Faustus by Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, the large-scale Cantonese opera production Shade of Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom and Romeo + Juliet by Hong Kong Ballet.

陳焯華畢業於香港演藝學院科藝學系,主修劇場燈光設計。他從 1997 年開始與著名劇團「非常林奕華」的長期合作關係。2019 年, 他憑《羅生門 》一劇獲得第二十八屆香港舞台劇獎最佳燈光設計, 又憑《紫玉成煙》贏得香港舞蹈年獎 2019 年的傑出燈光設計獎。

Billy Chan graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Theatre Lighting Design. His long-term collaboration with Edward Lam Dance Theatre began in 1997. In 2019, he received the award for Best Lighting Design at the Hong Kong Drama Awards for Rashomon (Chung Ying Theatre), and the award for Outstanding Lighting Design at the Hong Kong Dance Awards for Waiting Heart (Hong Kong Dance Company).

譚嘉儀是⾹港演藝學院學士 ,主修舞台及服裝設計,同時亦是香港 中文大學文化研究碩士 。她參與的舞台服裝設計製作超過九十個, 於⾹港、台灣、北京、上海、廣州、德國、加拿大 、英國、澳門 、 紐約和新加坡等地演出。

參與作品包括意大利歌劇、中國戲曲、舞蹈劇、話劇、音樂劇和形 體劇場。她分別於 2004 及 2015 年獲⾹港戲劇協會頒發最佳舞台服 裝設計,又於 2008 年獲亞洲文化協會利希慎獎助學金 。

Mandy Tam holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Set and Costume Design from the HKAPA, and a Master's degree of Intercultural Studies from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has since worked in more than 90 productions in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Berlin, Canada, British, Macau, New York and Singapore.

Her experience in costume design encompasses Chinese and Western opera, dance, drama, musical and physical theatre. In 2004 and 2015, she won the “Best Costume Award” from the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies. In 2008, she was awarded a scholarship from the Lee Hysan Foundation Fellowship of the Asian Cultural Council.

Jaycee Kwok graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts' College of Theatre and Entertainment Arts in 2011, majoring in Sound Design.

Since 2011, Kwok has cooperated with numerous theatre companies and cultural organisations, including Kearen Pang Production, Chung Ying Theatre Company, Windmill Grass Theatre, The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and Hong Kong Art Festival.

In 2020, He was awarded Best Sound Designer at the 29th Hong Kong Drama Awards for his design work in A Dream Like a Dream.

成博民畢業於香港中文大學新聞與傳播學院。現為影像設計師、影 像導演及視覺總監。眾聲喧嘩創團成員之一。

成博民為多媒體工作室「春秋大夢」創辦人及藝術總監,以動態影 像及投影為主要創作媒介。

他曾策劃及創作大型建築投影計劃《光築城市》。近期建築投影作 品有大館《 innerglow 2023 》(聯合視覺總監)。

Oliver Shing graduated from the School of Journalism and Communication of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is currently a digital image designer, digital image director and visual director. He is one of the co-founders of the Heteroglossia Theatre. Shing is the Founder and Visual Director of the multimedia studio, DAAIMUNG, which creates projects with motion graphics and projection mapping.

Shing organised and created Lights Up, a large-scale architectural projection mapping project. One of his recent architectural projection mapping projects is InnerGlow 2023 at Tai Kwun (in which he also served as Creative and Visual Director).

畢業於香港演藝學院,主修舞台及技術管理。

畢業後以自由工作者身份參與不同劇團和文化機構的舞台演出,擔 任製作及技術管理工作。近年亦為多個本地作品的國內及外地巡演 出任製作總監一職。

Bobo Chan is a graduate of the HKAPA, majoring in Stage and Technical Management.

She worked as a freelancer in production management and technical supervision after graduating. She has also served as a production supervisor for numerous foreign and domestic performances in recent years.

Recent stage productions with Chan’s participation include My Very Short Marriage, We Are Gay, One Last Gift, Proof and Big First Love Day.

Chan Chi-nok graduated from the HKAPA with majors in Arts, Event and Stage Management.

She has worked on stage management and co-ordination for a number of productions involving Hong Kong and foreign performing arts groups. In 2014, she won the award for Outstanding Deputy Stage Manager at the 23rd Hong Kong Drama Awards.

Her recent works include My Very Short Marriage by Such/, One Last Gift by Emperor Entertainment Group, I'mperfect by the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation and A Kind of Eternity by Schoolmates Theatre.
