Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. The Government is committed to promoting the development of arts and culture in the city, and we are blessed to have the support of devoted sponsors and donors who join us in making the Hong Kong Arts Festival an international success. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

《崔斯坦與伊索德》:一種舞蹈的詮釋 要是你喜愛華格納的歌劇《崔斯坦與伊索德》的話, 勅使川原三郎的舞蹈版本是必看的傑作。 愛情總是令人難以捉摸;兩個愛人對完美愛情的「憧 憬」及其不可能,透過夢幻般的藝術處理,以及由飾 崔斯坦的勅使川原三郎,與飾伊索德的佐東利穗子合 作演繹的高難度雙人舞去表現。在作品中,他倆被對 方深深吸引,意欲相互緊抱,但卻沒有任何身體觸 碰。無論他們如何努力嘗試,也未能抓住他們想抱的 人—然而經過無數次令人失落的嘗試,終令他們可 一窺愛戀中的閃亮極致 。 伊索德經歷過愛情高峰與當中矛盾,注定要面對絕對 的孤寂。當崔斯坦死去後,伊索德身邊就只剩下一片 巨大的虛空—沒有人、沒有任何東西能夠填滿它。 失去了他,她就感到自己好像是孤單一人置身於整個 宇宙 。 同一時間在這個演出當中,相當神秘地,我們會感到 崔斯坦以一種看不見的存在方式現身,就如無處不 在、充滿激情的愛戀雙人舞之殘影,一直陪伴着伊索 德。 她雖然獨舞,她卻與吸收在空氣中(還是周圍的空 間?)的他同在。直到由佐東演繹伊索德的最後一場 戲,我們才看見華格納之「愛與死」的最終極呈現; 這是一齣由與歌劇版本大相逕庭的層面重新創作而成 的,新穎、令人驚歎的《崔斯坦與伊索德》。 節錄自歌劇評論人盛岡美穗的文章

Tristan and Isolde: A dance interpretation Tristan and Isolde – If you love Richard Wagner's opera, Saburo Teshigawara's superb dance version is a must-see masterpiece for you. Love is always too elusive to catch it in one’s arms; the two lovers’ sehnsucht for the perfection of love and its unattainability is represented by a miraculously artistic and acrobatic duet with Saburo Teshigawara as Tristan and Rihoko Sato as Isolde, in which they are passionately attracted to hold each other but never have physical contact. No matter how desperately they try, they cannot hold who they want – but innumerable frustrating challenges allow them to get a glimpse of the sparkling pinnacle of love. Isolde, who goes through both the culmination of love and its paradox, is destined to face absolute solitude. Once Tristan passes away, there remains only a massive void around Isolde – no-one, nothing, cannot fill it up. Without him, she feels as if she is totally alone in the whole universe. At the same time, mysteriously, in this performance we feel that Tristan is there as an invisible presence, as a ubiquitous after-image of the passionate love duet, accompanying Isolde. She dances solo, but she is with him who has been absorbed in the air – or is it in the space? In the final scene for Sato's Isolde, you can see the ultimate realisation of the Liebestod; this is a novel, stupendous expression of Tristan and Isolde, recreated in a totally different dimension from the original opera. Saburo Teshigawara on his approach to dance You have a strong and specific stance or, if I may say, “philosophy” of dance. Could you tell us a bit more about your understanding of dance and what are you pursuing with your work in relation to the audience?

How has that affected your work, especially in Tristan and Isolde, where it seems, from time to time, like you are performing as a sculpture trying to break free?

The conflict between a human being’s exterior and interior is a paradoxical thing. I am interested in paradoxes out of context, of complex matters which look simple, and simple matters which are in fact complex. As an organised method of dance, this paradox gains a moving life. That is what dance is for me.

Sensitivity and fragility, huge wave-like forces, are two opposites which might seem like they do not belong together. Both exist in this great music by Wagner, and I feel it [the music] is born from the same small point. When I can feel that this great music and our tiny bodies are not on a different dimension, but can exist at the same level, this is when a dance piece can be created.

How does it feel to live the life of a successful and renowned artist, who is constantly creating new works, collaborating with different artists, ensembles, institutions, and touring a lot?

You dedicate a lot of time to teaching. Do you teach your students to work on their moves the same way you do; to overthink, to deconstruct, to work from within?

Curiosity that constantly keeps flowing, like a natural phenomenon, is what keeps moving me. This curiosity almost always appears together with tranquillity, and it leads me to a state of somewhat unstable and calm excitement. It is such a fun thing.

I do not teach them my way of thinking. I do talk about it, but I believe that there are individual ways of expression. The important thing is to release the mind and body, to concentrate and elevate it, to have fun, to be interested in difficulties, to forget, and not to give up. I try to teach that these are the elements which can make each person’s own rhythm. The rest depends on [the students] themselves.

You once said you like to overthink things. Is this overthinking crucial for deconstructing complex emotions and concepts? Is overthinking crucial for minimalism? Yes, and it is also necessary to make things simple and organised. Making things simple means searching for various simplicities, and not just one. You are also a sculptor. When did you start to feel the need to do the opposite, to work with movement instead of things frozen in time? When I thought that dance was a sure way of expression for me. Since then I had a premonition that the incomprehensibility and clarity of the body would lead me to something unknown.

Saburo Teshigawara on this production of Tristan and Isolde It’s surprising that the Tristan and Isolde story, a medieval Celtic tale that has long figured in literature, film and in Wagner’s opera of the same name, has been so infrequently used by choreographers... Why do you think that is so?

Tristan’s and Isolde’s love develops in between the social structures which surround them. How do you show this world?

I suppose it could be because of the existence of such a long and grand opera; maybe people thought it impossible to make such a piece into a dance.

Human beings are able to have a concrete vision even in their imagination, by creating some kind of limit. By not trying to express everything perfectly and taking care of details, the way of expression becomes abstract and suggestive.

What attracted you to these two figures and their mythological context?

By loving each other, Tristan and Isolde have to lie and hurt the ones they love.

The structure of these two people in Wagner’s opera is mythical, but not just symbols of a man and a woman. They reflect the profound human emotion and passion and the despair that comes with it, within the actuality of reality; it allows me to find this mythological context within my present body which is far away from it, as if looking through a telescope from the other side.

Even the mythology within the impossibility of such a thing as an “absolute love” bears out the paradox of daily love, and its desire and despair.

For thousands of years, this myth has been told in many different ways. Which way did you choose for your version? My basis was the story upon which Wagner’s opera is based. I was interested in the emptiness and physicality between two people who strongly desire each other. And how do you tell the love story of Tristan and Isolde choreographically? I searched for the possibilities of dance within the impossibility of expressing such a theme through dance. If expressing such a thing seems impossible, it can become the possibility to search for the possibility of a dance. Which aspects of being human do we find in this old legend, and which are still relevant today? Emotion and behaviour are always paradoxical. Yet, or therefore, we can solve various human difficulties using the confusion within this paradox.

In your previous work Absolute Zero you worked with stillness, in Green you were performing with animals in order to find what is inherently human. What were the predispositions of your choreography for Tristan and Isolde? Conflicting love and struggle. Impossible love. Harmony from disharmony. An end without an end. Can you shortly describe your work process on Tristan and Isolde? How did you choose the excerpts from Wagner’s opera and how did you rearrange them into a new piece? Also, what was the starting point for creating the dance material and the approach to composition? How did you collaborate with Rihoko Sato? The most important thing was not to miss the main story’s stream. I used a lot of the prelude and interlude, and tried not to add descriptive expression. To Rihoko, I did not ask her to dance as if she was playing a role. Rather, the main methodology for this piece was to become the music; a transparent existence. In that way, she dances Isolde’s passive tragedy as if living it, and not just telling it or explaining it.

Once the piece was finished and you performed it around the world, did your attitude change toward it? How can you sustain the “liveness” of the dance? When a piece has its premiere, it means it is born. And from that point, it keeps growing, like a living life. Therefore we always live in a new piece. And we too live together this new life, with the piece, each time. How would you place Tristan and Isolde in the context of your very diverse performing works? I think this is an emotional piece. Not in a theatrical way, but a dance that abstractly expresses the emotion which is within the music. KARAS was formed in 1985 by Saburo Teshigawara and Kei Miyata. The group's aim was to search for a “new form of beauty”. “Dance” is a form of art that consists not only of dance but also of elements of art, music, conscience methodology and historical views. KARAS began considering all such factors through the fusion of physical movement, visual art, rock and classical music.

手創立,其宗旨是去尋索一種「新形式的美」。 「舞蹈」作為一種藝術形式,其實不僅涉及舞 蹈動作,還包含各樣藝術元素、音樂、意識方法 論與歷史觀點。渡烏舞團就透過融匯形體動作、 視覺藝術、搖滾及古典音樂,去思考以上各項要 素。 作為一個藝術家,就應當面對隱藏於平靜表面底 下的社會心理限制。

怎樣也可以,不是嗎? 因此,渡烏舞團相信藝術不應因循守舊,而是要 有新的發現。我們希望以自己的方法,而並非以 行之已久的傳統藝術或藝術方式,去發掘仍然潛 藏的可能性。我們或者會發現一些疑惑或問題, 我們將會以行動去把這些發現表達出來。

Being an artist means facing the sociopsychological restrictions hidden under an outwardly serene surface. Anything goes – doesn’t it ? Thus, KARAS believes that art must not stagnate conservatively. New discoveries must be made. Rather than art or art methodology springing from conventional ideas established through history, we hope to act with our own methods with respect to still hidden possibilities. What we discover may be doubts or questions. We want to express these through action.

Saburo Teshigawara Saburo Teshigawara began his unique creative career in 1981 in his native Tokyo after studying plastic arts and classic ballet. In 1985, he formed KARAS with Kei Miyata, starting group choreography and their own activities. In every year since then, he and KARAS have been invited to perform in major international cities around the world. In addition to solo performances and his work with KARAS, Saburo Teshigawara has also received international attention as a choreographer/director. He has been commissioned by many international ballet companies, such as the Paris Opera, a company for which he has created repertoire pieces. Te s h i gawa ra h a s a l s o re c e i ve d i n c re a s i n g international attention in the visual arts field, with art exhibitions, films/videos as well as designing scenography, lighting and costume for all of his performances. Teshigawara’s keenly honed sculptural sensibilities and powerful sense of composition, command of space and his decisive dance movements all fuse to create a unique world that is his alone. Keen interests in music and space have led him to create site-specific works, and collaboration with various types of musicians. Besides the continuous workshops at the KARAS studio in Tokyo, Saburo Teshigawara has been involved in many education projects. Recently, young members of the KARAS company have come from the Dance of Air project, an educational initiative with a performance at the culmination of a year-long workshop process, produced by the New National Theatre Tokyo. Since 1995, S.T.E.P. (Saburo Teshigawara Education Project) has run together with partners in the UK, following the same format as Dance of Air. In 2004, Teshigawara was selected as the dance mentor for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, to work for one year with a chosen protégé.

Direction, lighting design, dancer From 2006 to 2013, Teshigawara taught at the College of Contemporary Psychology, St. Paul’s (Rikkyo) University in Japan. Since 2014, he has been a professor at the Tama Art University, in the department of Scenography Design, Drama, and Dance. Through these various projects, Saburo Teshigawara continues to encourage and inspire young dancers, together with his creative work. In 2013, he established his own private creative space, KARAS APPARATUS, in Ogikubo, Tokyo. Here, he continually works on a performance series called Update Dance.

Rihoko Sato studied gymnastics in the UK and the United States, where she lived until the age of 15. Having participated in KARAS’ workshops in 1995, she joined the group in 1996. Since then, she has performed in all of the company’s group works, and also works as the artistic assistant to Saburo Teshigawara in all his creative activities. Sato is acclaimed internationally as one of the main figures in Teshigawara’s works. In 2009 she presented her first solo dance SHE, directed by Teshigawara, leaving a striking and emotional impression. Her exceptionally sensitive body and nerves create a wide range of dynamism, from melting fragility to sharp intensity, opening a new dimension for physical expression. Sato has also assisted with KARAS’ education project S.T.E.P. and worked as dance mistress for Teshigawara’s commissioned works for other ballet companies. She received the Best Dancer Award for her duet with Vaclav Kunes in Scream and Whisper at the Les Étoiles de Ballet2000 Awards in 2005 in Cannes, France, the Japan Dance Forum award for 2007, the 40th edition of the Premio Positano “Leonide Massine” Per la Danza 2012 and most recently the Japan Dance Critic New Face award in 2016.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sergio Pessanha graduated in Architecture and Urbanism from the University of Brasilia in 1983. Pessanha has worked as a set and lighting designer, as well as technical director with many different directors and choreographers from different countries, such as EnDança, Eliana Carneiro and Maura Baiocchi (Brazil), Joao Fiadeiro, Angela Guerreiro and Rui Horta (Portugal), Maria Rovira and El Teatro Fronterizo (Spain), Alvaro Restrepo (Colombia), Los Denmedium and Vicky Cortés (Costa Rica), Les Ballets C. de la B. (Belgium), Constanza Macras (Germany) and from 2000 onwards with Saburo Teshigawara (Japan). He has taken part in over 350 international festivals with different dance and theatre productions in around 30 countries between America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Since 1994 Pessanha has lived in Germany while working all over the world.
