Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far.

This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape.

Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds.

Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses.

The Government is committed to promoting the development of arts and culture in the city, and we are blessed to have the support of devoted sponsors and donors who join us in making the Hong Kong Arts Festival an international success. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations.

• Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera.

HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people.

Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.

HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

About Playing Hooky A day at school: arriving in the schoolyard, friends, games, laughing, chattering, fooling around! The bell rings, the class begins… from math to recreation, from reciting to recitals, it's a jam-packed day for four pupils!

Four personalities, each so different from the other, burst into dances, songs and poetry. They shift from rejection to mutual acceptance, in their differences, their ideas, their individual talents.

Class ends and the noise explodes: skipping, playing ball, celebrating their world of invention and imagination, shouting the promise of lasting friendships.

Following on from previous PPS Danse production Tales for Naughty Children, Pierre-Paul Savoie again draws on the unique and captivating world of poet Jacques Prévert, this time with Playing Hooky, a show in which four dancers play challenging roles with splendid multidisciplinary ease. Music comes from Benoît Côté, who previously composed the music for Tales for Naughty Children and The Chairs. In a modern mode full of originality, the composer breathes new life into nursery rhymes and children's songs, expressed through the voices of Alexandre Désilets, Amylie and Geneviève Toupin.

Playing Hooky is a celebration of children's games, dance, song, music and poetry, of creativity, perseverance and camaraderie.

皮埃 - 保羅．薩瓦 Pierre-Paul Savoie 皮埃 - 保羅．薩瓦與詩人雅克．普雷維爾有 幾點相像：他喜愛任何年齡的人，喜愛和他 們談天，更喜愛聆聽他們的話。他與普雷維 爾一樣，喜愛以各種方式表達自我。他對當 代舞的喜愛油然而生，亦擅長把當代舞結合 劇場，創作出改編自尤內斯庫著名劇作的《椅 子》。 1989 年，薩瓦成立 PPS 舞團，為自己的創作 設立大本營。舞團讓他能夠追尋他的願景： 透過文化行動計劃鼓勵年輕人創作，啟發新 一代。2010 年，薩瓦以普雷維爾的詩作為藍 本創作《頑童記》。自此，音樂和歌曲成為 他生命中重要的一部分，正如普雷維爾一樣。 他其後創作了分別致敬加拿大歌手拉薩．迪 塞拉及詩人兼作曲家李奧．費雷的作品。 薩 瓦 獲 頒 加 拿 大 藝 術 協 會 積 琪 蓮． 拉 穆 獎 （1996）、里多獎（2014）及蒙特利爾文化 行動獎（2015）。他作為編舞家和舞台導演， 為觀眾帶來詩意純粹的難忘時刻： 「我真的覺得編舞有點像寫書法、寫作或是作 詩：你編寫、組合動作，嘗試賦予它們意義。」

藝術總監、編舞 Artistic Director, Choreographer Pierre-Paul Savoie resembles Jacques Prévert in several ways: like the poet, he has great affection for people of all ages. He loves to chat with them and especially to listen. Like the poet, he expresses himself in different ways. Modern dance is his natural passion but he likes to interweave it into theatre, as in his adaptation of The Chairs, based on the famous play by Ionesco.

In 1989, to give his creations a base, Savoie founded PPS Danse. The company has allowed him to pursue his heartfelt wish to awaken new generations through youth creations that have emerged through numerous cultural action programmes. In 2010, Pierre-Paul Savoie created the work Tales for Naughty Children by Prévert.

From then on, just as for the poet, music and song became increasingly important in his life. Savoie then created a tribute to the singer Lhasa de Sela, and a further one to the poet and composer Léo Ferré.

Savoie has received the Jacqueline Lemieux Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts (1996), the Prix RIDEAU Tournée (2014) and the City of Montreal's Prix de l'action culturelle (2015). 文本 Texts An artist of words, famous for his clever wordplay with the French language, the poet Jacques Prévert disliked school as a child: he found it quite boring. No doubt he would be astonished to see today that no fewer than 450 French schools now bear his name!

Perhaps it is because he so truly loved childhood, for him synonymous with total freedom and unfettered imagination.

Born at the turn of the 20th century, Prévert was acquainted with the Surrealists of his era such as Breton, Aragon, Peret and Queneau. In the 1930s, he wrote plays and film scripts for them, with wonderful poetic dialogue in his immortal Les visiteurs du soir, Quai des brumes and Les Enfants du paradis. He then turned his hand to writing songs, notably for Yves Montand and Juliette Greco.

But Jacques Prévert was above all a poet. His first collection of texts, entitled Paroles in reaction to the expression "Les paroles s'envolent, les écrits restent" (Words fly away, writings remain), appeared in 1946 and was a huge success. Playing Hooky features three texts from Paroles and six texts from Prévert's Histoires, also published in 1946. Always modern, always disconcerting and poetic, never boring, the poet died in 1977, leaving a large body of work that continues to enchant children and adults alike.

An Interview with Artistic Director and Choreographer Pierre-Paul Savoie Why Jacques Prévert?

Taming differences

I re a d h i s p o e m c o l l e c t i o n Pa ro l e s i n my adolescence, towards the end of my secondary school life. His poetry enchanted me, and I started to write poems as well. From then on my interest in theatre, and finally, dance grew. I find Prévert nonconformist, with lots of humour, and his strident gaze at society and adults gives me joy.

As an adult, I am deeply moved to see that children’s behaviour is apt in terms of accommodating cultural difference. However, beyond this difference, there is still a “segregation” of marginal personalities.

I particularly like his humanity and his love of children. He knows how to respect their intelligence.

His universe is so rich: there is humour, societal issues. For me, his words are always timely. I like the idea of introducing him to new generations. Two words that describe him? Different and essential.

What are the themes you tackle in your theatre work?

Learning and entertainment Children are eager to discover, invent, create and play. We learn to live in a thousand and one ways, but we normalise and value similar models too much, which leaves little space for different types of personalities to develop in a group of people.

Celebrating the imagination This is what I appreciate most in Prévert: he fulfils his desire to escape reality through poetic moments in his imagination.

Besides mastering their coordination for rope and balloon games, they must have excellent lung capacity to play, dance and sing at the same time.

Besides, out of the four actors in Playing Hooky, three had taken part in my other theatre piece based on Prévert. They are well trained for this extremely demanding work.

In fact, it is the actors who provide the theatre with a true inter-disciplinarity. As we follow them from the beginning to the end, they are the ones who give the theatre its full meaning.

What role do the singers play?

Alexandre Désilets is a gifted singer and performer who has been collaborating with PPS Danse for many years. He knows what is appropriate for a song, how to make it his own and how to make it unique. With his well-developed artistic sense, he recommended Amylie to me because he could hear how their voices complement each other. Together they gave a childlike colour to Benoît’s music, and especially a great vocal quality.

What significance does the music hold in this piece?

This is my third project collaborating with composer Benoît Côté, a creator who also acts on stage. When I give him a text, he gives magic back to me. His creativity and artistic sense significantly contributed to the work and often exceeded the boundaries of music. His observations are always discerning, and offered me a necessary perspective during the creative period.

How did you develop the play's script?

After I had finished my text collage and elaborated my choreography, Lise Vaillancourt, a playwright and a novelist, helped me create links between the scenes and the people, as well as how the texts converse with each other. Her accompaniment in playwriting led to surprises and contributed to the development of the script. It was with her help that I could weave between the scenes.

Since its founding in 1989 by choreographer, dancer and stage director Pierre-Paul Savoie, PPS Danse has pursued a mission to create and stage choreographic works in the dance-theatre genre. PPS Danse has maintained its position as a pillar of Quebec’s dance community by investing in three major areas: young audiences, the general public and cultural initiatives.

The company’s artistic approach emphasises the principle of encounters: the meeting of artists, shared themes and artistic languages, the meeting of works, communities and audiences. PPS Danse explores areas of encounters that both diverge and converge, albeit towards a common goal: to have young and adult audiences discover and cultivate an interest in dance.

Theatricality is also a rich component of the choreographic effort. The body gives expression to the choreographic vocabulary, as gestural adjunct to the drama and narrative, through expressivity, communicability and humanity.

Cultural Mediation Cultural Mediation is a key component of PPS Danse’s mission. The Cultural Mediation Workshops spark the creative process so vital to all stages of creation, from the germ of an idea, through to the hard work, production and performance. Through these workshops we are able to connect with children, adults and seniors, to share inventive and playful activities, to affirm a democratic vision of art, to learn about choreography and develop a love for dance.

Mathilde Addy-Laird

Performer

Mathilde Addy-Laird was drawn to the performing arts from a very early age. After dance and gymnastics she discovered theatre and pursued her college studies at Cégep de StLaurent with theatrical aspirations. Very quickly she chose a creative path by forming the Théâtre AcharnéE with three other female actors.

She then developed a strong interest in socially engaged theatre, focusing on artistic forms that challenge and question our choices in society. Her work emphasises the actual experience of exchanging with the audience during a live performance. Thus the notion of giving, receiving and transforming the spectator has become an essential factor.

Through numerous inter-disciplinary performances, this imperative serves her work as an actor and also as creator, puppeteer and dancer, particularly in the young audience theatre milieu. Inspired by the natural openness of children and their immense generosity, Mathilde is aiming to recreate this relationship with adults.

Chantal Baudouin

Performer

Chantal Baudouin discovered her passion for movement by way of gymnastics. She took her first dance classes at the age of eight and later joined the young troupe DansEncorps.

As a member of DansEncorps, Baudouin has had the opportunity to participate in the Dance and the Child International conference on three occasions (in Brazil, the Netherlands and Jamaica). In 2005, she represented Canada at the Jeux de la Francophonie in Niger.

Baudouin has worked with various choreographers including Serge Bennathan, Anna Blewchamp, Christopher House, Thomas Hauert, Gerry Trentham and Pierre-Paul Savoie.

In 2013, she danced in New York for ProjectLIMB in the show Glass Jaw by Gabriel Forestieri.

Recently Badouin rejoined the DansEncorps troupe and is working with choreographer Pierre-Paul Savoie and teaching at the École DansEncorps.

Nicolas Boivin

Nicolas Boivin is from Québec, Canada. He started dancing aged 12 years old in a hip hop style. Afterwards, Boivin became interested in ballet and contemporary dance, and in 2017 he graduated from the Contemporary Dance School of Montreal. Boivin works with a lot of generosity and authenticity; recently he has worked with Cas Public Company and PPS Danse.

Professional dancer Marilyne St-Sauveur has performed in pieces by choreographer MarieJulie Asselin, Marie Béland, Lynda Gaudreau, Frédérick Gravel, Emmanuel Jouthe, OSEZ!/ Karine Ledoyen, Dean Makarenko, Pierre-Paul Savoie, Andrew Tay and Katie Ward, as well as for La 2e Porte à Gauche.

Her projects have taken her throughout Québec and Canada, and also to the USA, France, England and Belgium. Presented with awards by both Cégep de Saint-Laurent and Université du Québec à Montréal, St-Sauveur has taught at Département de Danse du Cégep de SaintLaurent for over 10 years. Most recently, she has been sharing her passion for dance with the elderly together with the company Danse Carpe Diem.
