MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE
I would like to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 51st edition.
For more than half a century now, the Arts Festival has enthralled audiences with a superb annual programme of arts and culture performances embracing classical music and opera, theatre, dance, multimedia and a great deal more.
This year’s Arts Festival programme opens with the Slovene National Theatre Maribor’s ballet performances of Radio and Juliet and Le Sacre du Printemps, two classics re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Edward Clug. It closes, nearly five weeks later, with a concert by Germany’s Bamberg Symphony, one of Europe’s greatest orchestras. Other highlights include Anna Netrebko, one of the world’s great sopranos, performing with her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov; artist William Kentridge’s remarkable production of Monteverdi’s opera, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, brought to life by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and Belgium’s Ricercar Consort periodinstrument ensemble; Ballet Superstars’ Force of Nature and Legendary Ballerina

in Two Feet featuring supreme ballerina Natalia Osipova; and concerts by the international award-winning piano virtuoso Bruce Liu.
As always, the Festival shines a spotlight on standout artists from Hong Kong. This year’s Cantonese opera offerings include Love in the Bamboo Grove, Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, The Painted Skin (Refined Edition) and Virtues and Morality—Four Cantonese Operas. Local productions including Table For Six on Stage, Loveless Romance and Love Streams are sure to be among this year’s Festival highlights.
Several programmes invite public participation as well, including the First Steps participatory dance performances staged by France’s Tamanoir Immersive Studio, as well as Tai Kwun’s free series of arts tech productions and the Festival’s No Limits programme, led by local and international artists of varying abilities. No Limits’ offerings emphasise youth exploration, as does the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival with its school tours, preperformance workshops and special programming. And then there is the Festival PLUS creative activities that bring artists and audiences together in communities throughout Hong Kong.
I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its inspired commitment to the arts and to Hong Kong’s continuing rise as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. My thanks, as well, to the Festival’s many generous sponsors and donors.
I know you will treasure every performance, every moment, of this year’s Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Kevin Cheng's World of the Sheng

The history of the sheng can be traced back more than 3,000 years to the Shang dynasty, when the instrument first appeared in the ancient Chinese characters known as the oracle bone script. But the sheng’s debut as a solo instrument in the modern era only took place around 60 years ago. In 1956, Shanxiborn sheng player Hu Tianquan and composer Dong Hongde collaborated on the first modern solo sheng piece, The Phoenix Unfolds Its Wings. Drawing on local opera traditions and adding unique techniques for playing the sheng such as tremolotonguing and glissando, the tune has become a must-learn classic for sheng players.
The following decades marked the birth of many solo pieces for the sheng, with many of them inspired by regional music and created by practitioners based on their own original techniques, often with distinctly Chinese titles such as Jin Tune, Raise the Red Lantern, Weishan Lake Boat Song and Spring Morning on Hainan, to name but a few. Many of these even added Western musical elements, blending the West into the East.
At the same time, the contemporary reformation of Chinese musical instruments has led to the sheng being used in a wide variety of different musical forms. In fact, there should be no comparison between these types; adding or removing a note does not make it better or worse. After all, the different types
emerged mainly to cater to the musical traditions and playing habits of different regions, just as there are different accents or pronunciations within the same language. On the other hand, different types of fingering can add new dimensions to a piece of work. In this concert, I will play the traditional 26-reed sheng and a 38-reed keyed sheng. A reed is a mouthpiece and each reed carries a tone. The reed arrangement of the traditional sheng may seem random, but it facilitates the fingering of traditional harmonic combinations in a well-ordered way, producing a simple and pure sound. The pitch range of the keyed sheng is extensive, including all semitones. Its reed arrangement may appear complicated and difficult, but it makes fingering easy for some special intervals or harmonic combinations.
I have participated in various types of fusion performances since I moved to Singapore eight years ago. The uniqueness of Singapore's culture lies in its multi-ethnic makeup, and cross-ethnic artistic fusion has gradually evolved into a distinctive Singaporean style. I believe it is important to preserve the unique language of Chinese instruments while blending different cultures and musical genres to bring to light the irreplaceable charm of each instrument.
Today's concert showcases the charm and colour of the sheng through rearranging the regional
16
and ethnic tunes of various countries, and the collision with Western instruments. The ten pieces are based on classical folk tunes from Guangdong, Mongolia, Southeast Asia and South America, covering the genres of jazz, swing, pop and bossa nova. I spent the past year discussing and revising the works with the composers in order to make the most of the distinct sounds and techniques of each instrument in every single piece.
The Hong Kong Arts Festival has commissioned three pieces of music for today's concert. Dondang Sayang and Joget and 5D! were composed by aspiring Singaporean composer Phang Kok Jun. He is active in the Chinese and Western music scene in Singapore, and has written a variety of compositions that are euphonious yet with a tinge of passion and romance. Last year, he wrote Finger Dance for me in a unique genre that pushed the boundaries of the
traditional sheng and was warmly embraced by the audience. Another commissioned work, A Martial Dance, composed by Hong Kong composer Pong Law, combines traditional Chinese music with pop elements. Pong graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a degree in Composition, and frequently composes for local performers and performing arts groups. In addition to his expertise in classical and pop music, he is also a master of Chinese instrumentation.
Bringing the sheng into the hall, today we enter Kevin Cheng's world and experience how tradition meets modernity.

《 Dondang Sayang and Joget 》

Astor Piazzolla

Moon Reflections
Moon Reflections is inspired by the well-known erhu work by Hua Yanjun (Ah Bing), Reflection of the Moon on Lake Erquan. The piece uses melodies from Erquan as a base, topped with the material and harmonic structure of popular jazz music, creating a dialogue between tradition and modernity that breaks through time and space. After the prelude in blues, the cello, sheng and piano take turns to play the theme of Reflection of the Moon on Lake Erquan. The flow of the music inspires flashbacks of memories, evoking a complex mixture of emotions: pain, joy, sorrow, pleasure, frustration, regret and more. At the close, each instrument echoes the melody, as if they are organising their emotions and preparing for the next journey. Finally, the sheng concludes the piece with the opening theme.
Grasslands Fantasia
The work is based on the Inner Mongolian folk song Mu Ge (The Song of the Herders), with a presentation in the style of jazz. It was first written for Chinese orchestra, premiered by Singapore Chinese Orchestra in 2006. The version for this performance is a re-arrangement by Kevin
Cheng Ho-kwan.
The introduction, rich and fearless, is played by cello
which imitates the Mongolian folk instrument, the matouqin; it narrates the story of the grasslands. Different instruments follow successively to play the theme of Mu Ge, some of them lyrical and others exuberant, depicting the magnificent scenery of the grasslands. The ending depicts a gradually receding melody, leaving an air of reminiscence.
Dondang Sayang and Joget
Two popular Malay music genres are featured in this piece. The Dondang Sayang is a love song, featuring poetic lines sung by two singers in a flowing, ballade style. A Joget, on the other hand, is a fast-paced, triple-meter dance, meant for joyous occasions.
This piece rewrites these two genres as a sheng solo. In Dondang Sayang, the sheng takes on the role of two singers, playing melismatic lines filled with ornaments that are characteristic of this style. While the harmonic progression is faithful to the original, the sheng solo veers in and out of the harmonic structure, occasionally injecting a few surprises in an improvisatory performance.
The Joget’s theme is based on the Dondang Sayang melody and brings the ensemble together in a lively tutti. Hemiolas and shifting phrases allow the music to come to life in a joyous dance.
Funky Solo
Funky Solo is adapted from the Indonesian folk song Bengawan Solo created by legendary singer-songwriter Gesang Martohartono. The music combines funk and blues materials and rhythms, creating a sense of relaxation and humor. The middle part is interspersed with the big band style, putting a new spin on the unsophisticated folk melody. The lead passages of soprano sheng, harp, cello and double bass demonstrate the unique timbre and skills of each instrument, and at the same time feature improvisations, giving players the freedom to express their own musical feelings.

Hispanic Dance
Hispanic Dance by Claude Bolling is the first movement of the Concerto for Classic Guitar and Jazz Piano, written for guitarist Alexandre Lagoya in 1976. Tonight’s version is rearranged by Kevin Cheng Hokwan, adapting the solo guitar part for sheng.
Bolling (1930-2020) was a French jazz musician, composer and arranger. He was also a child prodigy; by the age of 14 he was playing jazz piano professionally with the likes of Lionel Hampton, Roy Eldridge and Kenny Clarke. He was a major part of the traditional jazz revival in the late 1960s, and he became friends with Oscar Peterson. Starting with his Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio in 1975, Bolling wrote a series of “crossover" compositions. He would find a classical musician, proficient in any instrument, and compose a piece for them accompanied by a jazz piano trio. These pieces blended classical styles with modern swing. They were wildly popular, with his Suite for Flute appearing on the Billboard top 40 classical charts for more than 10 years.
Café 1930
Café 1930 by Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) is the second movement of the Histoire du Tango suite, where the composer tells the history of tango in four parts styled at 30-year intervals. Piazzolla provided programme notes that expanded on the
individual movements: “Café 1930: This is another age of the tango. People stopped dancing it as they did in 1900, preferring instead simply to listen to it. It became more musical and more romantic. This tango has undergone total transformation: the movements are slower, with new and often melancholy harmonies. The tango orchestra came to consist of two violins, two concertinas, a piano and a bass. The tango is sometimes sung as well.”
Bunga Sayang
Composed by Singaporean artist Dick Lee in 1994, Bunga Sayang is the theme song of his musical Kampong Amber. This piece is a contemporary tune based on the Peranakan culture in Singapore. Peranakan folk music is noted for its fusion of English in Malay-inspired tunes, largely because the Peranakans themselves are often conversant in both languages. The piece has regularly been used in the Singapore National Day Parade. It captures the narrative of an equatorial Singapore, a home with love and hope for all.
Tonight’s version is arranged by Kevin Cheng Ho-kwan for sheng, cello, harp and percussion.
Canton Ballad
This piece features the wellknown Cantonese piece Autumn Moon Over the Calm Lake rewritten as a jazz ballad. A solo sheng will be accompanied by a jazz trio, combining to create a tranquil but colourful
atmosphere. Parts of the original melody will be retained, but with re-harmonisation. In the middle segment, the sheng plays an improvisatory passage, during which other moon-themed Cantonese pieces will appear as cameos.
5D!
5D! fuses many elements: most recognisably Indian Carnatic music and jazz. The tongue-incheek title is meant to sound like the Cantonese phrase “faai di” (“hurry up”), referring to the piece growing faster and faster through metric modulation, but it means more than that.
“Five” also refers to a five-note pentatonic scale. The piece takes numerous references from the

Chinese pentatonic scale as well as the Indian mohanam raga.
“Five” also refers to five-note phrases. The piece features many of those, which, when played against the common threeor four-beat patterns, create irregularity and syncopation. It challenges the performers while creating an exciting and unpredictable musical atmosphere.
“Five” also refers to the sections of the piece, starting with an improvisatory Alap, a free-tempo solo found in Indian music, followed by sections that get faster and faster, featuring freeflowing jazz-like improvisations.
“D” refers to the centric note of the piece and appears as a drone throughout. This again is a reference to Indian Carnatic music, in which a tambura constantly plays a drone.
A Martial Dance
In Hong Kong, Theme of Pioneers, General’s March and Prelude to the Dagger Society are widely known tunes heard in numerous martial arts films and TV dramas. Many people will immediately associate them with the film The Young Swordsman Lung Kimfei from the 1960s, the 1990s film Once Upon a Time in China, and even the martial art moves popularised by these films.
A Martial Dance is a short, light-hearted piece that takes elements from these three pieces, exemplifying the styles of jazz, pop and fusion.
With a solo sheng as the core, the composer uses the rhythm section commonly used in jazz or pop to go along with the harp and cello. It presents a unique style, carrying a pop flavour while preserving the charm of traditional Chinese music.

Tradition Meets Modernity
in Kevin Cheng’s Brave New World
The Chinese sheng has a long history, so how can it be used to interpret the meaning of “tradition” in modern times? At the upcoming Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong-born sheng musician Kevin Cheng will bring us a programme that attempt to answer this question.

Sheng (second from left), as seen in this Tang-dynasty Buddhist art from the Yulin Caves, has mostly been an ensemble instrument throughout Chinese history.

Searching for the roots of the sheng
Encyclopedia Britannica tells us that the earliest image of the sheng dates back to around 1100 BC, and the earliest surviving instrument can be traced to the Han dynasty. It has mainly been an ensemble instrument throughout its 3,000 years of history. Hong Kong-born sheng musician Kevin Cheng says: “Since the founding of Modern China, all disciplines have been flourishing, and the sheng needed its own traditional repertoire. Therefore, Shanxiborn composer Hu Tianchuan wrote The Phoenix Unfolds its Wings in 1956 and established the sheng solo tradition. It was convenient that Hu based it on Shanxi traditional bangzi tunes.”
A custom-made performance
Cheng’s fateful encounter with the musical instrument goes back to his first year in secondary school, when he joined the Chinese orchestra and picked up the sheng on his teacher’s recommendation, both because it sounded good and no-one else was playing it. The next year, Cheng won an inter-school music competition with his sheng, and the rest is history. Cheng recalls a memory from his school days: “I studied in a church school, and the hymnbook used numbered musical notation, which was also used in Chinese musical scores when we learned them. A fellow sheng player at school picked up the hymnbook and started playing hymn tunes with the sheng. It was unexpectedly beautiful! While I worked in Singapore during the past few years, I also saw the development of diverse possibilities in Chinese music. Singapore, being so multicultural, does not share the burden of ‘inheriting tradition’ as in mainland China.” Cheng believes that as the sheng does not have an historical soloistic tradition, there are infinite possibilities when it comes to writing new music or arrangements for the instrument. Cheng will present a diverse programme for traditional sheng and keyed sheng with traditional Chinese, Nanyang (Southeast Asian), Indian and Western elements. Cheng particularly likes one of the commissioned
works, A Martial Dance, by Hong Kong composer Pong Law, in which popular Chinese tunes from martial arts films are quoted. The sheng player also participated in the creative process, making the piece an idiomatic and virtuosic display of the instrument.
In Cheng's ingeniously arranged programme, tradition and modernity collide and intermingle with each other, materialising an intercultural dialogue that transcends time and space through music.
