MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

I would like to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 51st edition.

For more than half a century now, the Arts Festival has enthralled audiences with a superb annual programme of arts and culture performances embracing classical music and opera, theatre, dance, multimedia and a great deal more.

This year’s Arts Festival programme opens with the Slovene National Theatre Maribor’s ballet performances of Radio and Juliet and Le Sacre du Printemps, two classics re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Edward Clug. It closes, nearly five weeks later, with a concert by Germany’s Bamberg Symphony, one of Europe’s greatest orchestras. Other highlights include Anna Netrebko, one of the world’s great sopranos, performing with her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov; artist William Kentridge’s remarkable production of Monteverdi’s opera, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, brought to life by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and Belgium’s Ricercar Consort periodinstrument ensemble; Ballet Superstars’ Force of Nature and Legendary Ballerina

in Two Feet featuring supreme ballerina Natalia Osipova; and concerts by the international award-winning piano virtuoso Bruce Liu.

As always, the Festival shines a spotlight on standout artists from Hong Kong. This year’s Cantonese opera offerings include Love in the Bamboo Grove, Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, The Painted Skin (Refined Edition) and Virtues and Morality—Four Cantonese Operas. Local productions including Table For Six on Stage, Loveless Romance and Love Streams are sure to be among this year’s Festival highlights.

Several programmes invite public participation as well, including the First Steps participatory dance performances staged by France’s Tamanoir Immersive Studio, as well as Tai Kwun’s free series of arts tech productions and the Festival’s No Limits programme, led by local and international artists of varying abilities. No Limits’ offerings emphasise youth exploration, as does the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival with its school tours, preperformance workshops and special programming. And then there is the Festival PLUS creative activities that bring artists and audiences together in communities throughout Hong Kong.

I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its inspired commitment to the arts and to Hong Kong’s continuing rise as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. My thanks, as well, to the Festival’s many generous sponsors and donors.

I know you will treasure every performance, every moment, of this year’s Hong Kong Arts Festival.

The success of an opera is intrinsically linked to its script, the director and the performances of the actors. Each component is indispensable. Cantonese Opera—Love in the Bamboo Grove was written by Raymond To, a contemporary dramatist, screenwriter and film director with numerous accolades. After being celebrated in the theatrical field, To challenged his limits by writing a Cantonese opera (even though this is not his first time, he seldom writes Cantonese operas). It is for this reason that I decided to accept the invitation to serve as director.

We have known each other for quite some time and first worked together during the production of one of his classics, The Mad Phoenix. I was honoured to play the role of Sit Kok-sin in that play, and we got to know each other better. This is our first time working together as playwright and director, so I was eagerly awaiting the experience.

After receiving the script of Love in the Bamboo Grove, I read it in detail. My first impression was that it is a highly malleable opera with a fresh setting, encouraging people to smile through the storm. There remains room for creativity in the parts for singing and spoken dialogue, in the expression through body movements, and in the fighting scenes, and the opera also includes dancing and acrobatic fighting. There is much to offer

in terms of content, and the new set design, accompanied by lighting design, enriches the performance on stage. Along with the percussion and music-playing, the audience can expect much visual and audio entertainment. For this performance, I worked with an outstanding team, including young actors and a band full of vigour and vitality. I believe all these factors make our opera a breath of fresh air.

First of all, many thanks go to the Hong Kong Arts Festival. I am not just being polite, but am genuinely grateful. Although Nga-ki and I formed the Nan Art Workshop and have produced numerous performances, this is my first time co-ordinating a performance under a large organisation like the Hong Kong Arts Festival. While co-ordinating with people across various disciplines, I encountered many things and learned a lot during the process, making this an invaluable experience. I would like to express my gratitude to the Festival for trusting me and offering me this precious opportunity.

Second of all, I am grateful to Raymond To for his recognition and guidance. Many people would like to receive a script from To, but he was willing to put his precious time into writing a tailored script for us. He analyses and shares with us the personality of the characters in detail all the time. He was

definitely an essential character in the opera! To also coached us with great generosity during the production of another new Cantonese opera, Surfing the Sea of Blood, giving us much useful feedback. For Nga-ki and I, To is our mentor on the road of artistic creation. I am deeply thankful!

Thirdly, I would like to thank our director, Sun Kim-long. He has devoted much time and effort to this opera, paying meticulous attention to every detail during rehearsals . He is truly a role model for the young generation as a veteran in the field of Cantonese opera.

Thanks also go to Jason Kong, our music arranger. We have been friends since before we found fame. I remember that when we were still working as extras in operas, we always analysed the scenes and came up with new ideas for scripts in our free time. That is how we created and produced A Hidden Arrow, The Women’s Kingdom and the Delusive Love, The Sin of Hero and Surfing the Sea of Blood. Kong’s aspirations in music and art have never changed.

I would also like thank Han Yanming, Wyborn Leung, Cheung Ching-wo, Vanessa Tsang, Leung Yuet-wai, Ko Wing-hei, Share Kalok, Cheng Nga-ki, Johnson Yuen, Wang Kit-ching, Jim Ho-fung, Lo Lai-see, Cheng Lan-fen and Annie Chow. They are all distinguished artists in Hong Kong, and I believe it is only with their efforts and contributions that a brilliant performance can be delivered.

Lastly, I would like to thank every audience of Cantonese opera. It is only with their support that Cantonese opera can continue to be performed and passed on.

The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove and The Song of Guangling

Political instability erupted in the late Wei era when Sima Zhao plotted against the House of Wei and sought to replace it with the House of Jin. At that time, seven scholars became disillusioned with the political situation and chose to live as recluses. They often gathered in a bamboo grove in Shanyang county (now in Henan province), where they drank, played music and indulged in discussions about xuanxue (mystic learning) and the philosophies of Laozi and Zhuangzi. Later, people referred to them as the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. It was only when Sima Zhao executed one of the Seven, Ji Kang, when the remaining members parted ways. The legend goes that before Ji Kang died, he played the piece The Song of Guangling, which tells the historical story of Nie Zheng assassinating the King of Han. While a musician would normally seek to be neutral and calm when playing the qin, this tune has a fervent, impassioned melody, which is a rarity for such pieces.

This is a story about the descendants of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove in the Western Jin dynasty. Xiang Chong, son of Xiang Xiu, has mastered the swordplay. He finds childhood friend Ji Dan, the daughter of Ji Kang, in the Bamboo Grove, in the hope of marrying and protecting her, fulfilling his promise.

A Taoist world in the Bamboo Grove

The first sight you see when walking into Raymond To’s humble home is a shelf full of trophies he received at the Golden Horse Awards and Hong Kong Film Awards. Just a few steps away, there’s a small, quaint enclave full of Chinese paintings and calligraphy. The multifaceted space reveals the many hats that To has been wearing over the years—playwright, screenwriter, painter and now, with his latest work, Love in the Bamboo Grove, the newly added role of Cantonese opera librettist. To enjoys walking the roads less travelled, and this time he’s been on a romantic journey of blood and tears to the abstruse cosmos of Taoism.

A film and TV virtuoso returns to his Cantonese opera origin

To’s writing career has always been connected to Cantonese opera. As a rising playwright 20 years ago, To’s popularity was built on his fine scripts for films and stage plays based on Cantonese opera. His notable Hu Du Men tells the story of a woman who professionally plays the female version of the “civil and martial” male leading role in Cantonese opera. Blockbuster The Mad Phoenix chronicles the epic life of legendary Cantonese opera playwright Kong YuKau (often referred to by the stage name “the 13th son of Nanhai”). Cantonese opera has been To’s calling, not just as a source of inspiration but an art form he ultimately yearns for, all dating back to his childhood years. While working as a junior broadcaster for Rediffusion Television, To sat alongside Cantonese opera celebrities

Sin Kim-lai, Tang Kee-chan and other big names in the radio station. Frequenting Cantonese opera theatre as a little boy, To recounts: “For my generation, going to the theatre was as common as kids listening to rap music nowadays. Kids often got free entry. They simply sat on their mothers' laps during the night-long play.”

Four decades of writing have passed at the click of a finger. Over the course of a vast but focused career, To did attempt to create Cantonese opera using a different approach, such as what

was described as the “Chinese opera-musical” The Pearl Shirt (a Cantonese opera version was made afterwards), in which To sought to defy the conventions of the traditional performing art. And after flirting with experimentation, To’s greatest wish now is to write a “genuine” Cantonese opera script. Faithfully equipped with gongs and drums, a prescriptive singing system, hand movements and everything else inherited from tradition, Love in the Bamboo Grove is a fresh take on the classic art form.

From ruins and debris to Taoist utopia

How does tradition coexist with innovation? Backed by an indepth historical analysis, the early Jin dynasty-set Love in the Bamboo Grove quest for love and selfhood by two descendants of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove against social unrest and a feud between warring families. Although the subject of romantic love between a handsome scholar and a pretty girl is regularly seen in classical Chinese literature, the work is not a plain ode to the stereotype. Set in the lesserknown context of the Western Jin dynasty and using the form of Cantonese opera to retell the unique tale of the Seven Sages, the work has a lot to offer modern audiences.

So who were the titular Seven Sages? They were a group of idiosyncratic intellectuals devoted to nature and leisure.

Rejecting urban life and politics, the group indulged in play and alcohol, and were influenced by the Taoist philosophies of Laozi and Zhuangzi. To elaborates: “The hidden motive behind the play is to raise people’s awareness of Taoism, a fundamental discipline embedded in our cultural DNA that’s been overshadowed by mainstream Confucianism and Buddhism. The Three Teachings of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism have been a harmonious aggregate in Chinese philosophy since the Jin dynasty, but most of us have neglected the importance of Taoism in the history of thought. I hope to construct a world that is pure and true to Taoism through this play.”

28

While the teachings of Laozi and Zhuangzi are often seen as vague and difficult to grasp, To decided to deal with this enormously complicated topic using a simple love story. “Taoism is not a monotonous set of values; it is about adjusting controversies and finding ‘oneness’ across heterogeneous matters. The social-political world is everchanging, people’s conflicts are never-ending, but there is always a universal substance that connects everything.” The story depicts an array of characters with divergent standpoints; some are loyal to their vow of living as a recluse and some—such as Shan Tao—decide to resume political duties. The script makes no judgement and is completely neutral on each character. “What matters the most in a play is still the entertainment aspect. When an audience is asked to think continually, there is no room to enjoy the art. After the show, if there is a particular role that intrigues you, or even represents you, that will be your personal answer to all the questions.”
