第五十一屆香港藝術節隆重舉行,可 喜可賀。

逾半個世紀以來,藝術節每年均呈獻 多姿多彩的文藝節目,由古典音樂、 歌劇、戲劇,以至舞蹈、多媒體項 目等,包羅萬有,令觀眾大飽眼福。

今屆藝術節以《收音機與茱麗葉》及 《春之祭》芭蕾舞表演揭開序幕,兩 齣經典作品經由著名編舞家愛德華· 克魯格重新編排,加上斯洛文尼亞 國家歌劇院馬里博爾芭蕾舞團傾力演 出,萬眾矚目;約五星期後,歐洲頂 尖交響樂團—德國班貝格交響樂團將 登台獻技,為今年藝術節畫上圓滿句 號。其間上演的焦點節目還有: 國 際星級女高音安娜·涅翠柯與丈夫男 高音尤西夫·伊瓦佐夫聯袂表演的音 樂會;由藝術家威廉·肯特里奇精心 製作、南非木偶劇團和比利時里切卡 爾古樂團奇妙演繹的蒙特威爾第歌劇 《尤利西斯歸鄉記》;由芭蕾天后娜塔 麗亞·奧斯波娃領銜主演的芭蕾巨 星之《「世」不可擋》及傳奇舞姬之 《趾尖》;以及國際鋼琴大賽冠軍劉曉 禹的演奏會。

藝術節向來十分重視本地演藝人才, 致力讓他們一展才華。今屆藝術節亦 會上演多個粵劇節目,包括《竹林愛 傳奇》、「毛俊輝.粵劇情」、《畫皮》 (精新版),以及「短篇粵劇—戲說 八德」; 並帶來其他本地作品,包括 《飯戲攻心》踏台版、《末戀.無愛合 約》、舞蹈歌劇《兩生花》等等,定 必精彩萬分,不容錯過。

大眾還可通過藝術節,體驗繽紛的藝 術魅力。法國食蟻獸沉浸式藝術工作 室創作的《第一步》,會邀請觀眾互 動共舞;在大館舉行的一系列免費藝 術科技節目,以及「無限亮」計劃, 亦會讓公眾參與其中。「無限亮」計 劃由本地和海外不同能力的藝術家擔 綱演出,鼓勵青少年衝破界限,探索

I would like to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 51st edition.

For more than half a century now, the Arts Festival has enthralled audiences with a superb annual programme of arts and culture performances embracing classical music and opera, theatre, dance, multimedia and a great deal more.

This year’s Arts Festival programme opens with the Slovene National Theatre Maribor’s ballet performances of Radio and Juliet and Le Sacre du Printemps, two classics re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Edward Clug. It closes, nearly five weeks later, with a concert by Germany’s Bamberg Symphony, one of Europe’s greatest orchestras. Other highlights include Anna Netrebko, one of the world’s great sopranos, performing with her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov; artist William Kentridge’s remarkable production of Monteverdi’s opera, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, brought to life by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and Belgium’s Ricercar Consort periodinstrument ensemble; Ballet Superstars’ Force of Nature and Legendary Ballerina

in Two Feet featuring supreme ballerina Natalia Osipova; and concerts by the international award-winning piano virtuoso Bruce Liu.

As always, the Festival shines a spotlight on standout artists from Hong Kong. This year’s Cantonese opera offerings include Love in the Bamboo Grove, Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, The Painted Skin (Refined Edition) and Virtues and Morality—Four Cantonese Operas. Local productions including Table For Six on Stage, Loveless Romance and Love Streams are sure to be among this year’s Festival highlights.

Several programmes invite public participation as well, including the First Steps participatory dance performances staged by France’s Tamanoir Immersive Studio, as well as Tai Kwun’s free series of arts tech productions and the Festival’s No Limits programme, led by local and international artists of varying abilities. No Limits’ offerings emphasise youth exploration, as does the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival with its school tours, preperformance workshops and special programming. And then there is the Festival PLUS creative activities that bring artists and audiences together in communities throughout Hong Kong.

I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its inspired commitment to the arts and to Hong Kong’s continuing rise as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. My thanks, as well, to the Festival’s many generous sponsors and donors.

I am delighted to welcome you to the 51st edition of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. As the city recovers from the disruption of the pandemic, the Festival is returning with an array of live performances featuring top-notch artists from Hong Kong and across the world. Despite the boundless possibilities offered by the internet, attending performances in person remains an irreplaceable experience. It gives me great pleasure to share this collective experience with you today.

The Festival is made possible by the generosity of our supporters.

I wish to thank the HKSAR Government, via the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, for the annual subvention which underpins our long-standing work. I am also grateful for the ongoing contributions from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, as well as corporate sponsors, charitable foundations and individual donors. My sincere thanks go

to the participating artists for their dedication to bringing the best to our audiences, especially those returning after previous cancellations due to the pandemic.

Our theme this year, “Coming Back, Moving Forward”, represents our determination to come back in full force after several years of uncertainties caused by the pandemic. After five decades of hard work and dedication, the Festival has established itself as a premier arts event in the region and an important international arts festival. We are honoured to carry this legacy forward, while advancing our multifaceted work to stay relevant in the present. In the 51st edition, we discover creative voices through new renditions of masterpieces, cross-disciplinary collaborations and commissioned productions— all of which showcase the breadth and endless possibilities of the performing arts, taking us one step

forward in this journey of exploration. Beyond exceptional performances, we are also offering a series of auxiliary PLUS programmes to enhance audience engagement and provide deeper insights into our programmes. Our strong commitment to arts education is seen in the extensive outreach activities aimed at inspiring the younger generation of Hong Kong through promoting quality arts.

The Festival steps into the second half of its first centenary with both optimism and renewed courage to bravely face the great challenges ahead. I hope you will stay close with us and be inspired by what the Festival has to offer.

香港藝術節於 1973 年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的文化 盛事,於每年 2、 3 月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國際藝術家 的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育活動,致力豐 富香港的文化生活。

香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2022/ 23 財政年度預計收

入(包括第 51 屆香港藝術節及 2023 年「無限亮」)約港 幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔總收入約 18%,另外約 24%需來自票房收入,約 43%則需依賴來自 各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊助和捐款。預計餘 下的約 15%則來自其他收入,包括政府針對捐款和贊助收 入而提供的配對資助。

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2022/23 (including the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2023 “No Limits”) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 18% of the Festival's total income. Around 24% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 43% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. The HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres, such as*:

• Western opera: Bavarian State Opera, Oper Leipzig, The Bolshoi Theatre, The Mariinsky Theatre

• Chinese opera: China National Peking Opera Company, Hebei Clapper Opera Troupe, Shanghai Zhang Jun Kunqu Art Center, Suzhou Kunqu Opera Company of Jiangsu, Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family – A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina

成立 30 年來,已為逾 810, 000 位本地中學生及大專生提供 藝術體驗活動。藝術節近年亦開展多項針對大、中、小學 生的藝術教育活動,包括由國際及本地藝術家主持的示範 講座及工作坊、學生展演、演前講座、公開彩排、以及欣 賞藝術節演出。同時,通過「學生票捐助計劃」,藝術節 每年提供約 10, 000 張半價學生票。

2019 年正式開展,透過一系列的演出及多元的 教育及社區外展節目,「無限亮」致力創造共融空間,讓不 同能力人士均可以一同欣賞、參與、擁抱藝術。

Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake co-commissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera.

The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 30 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 810,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.

The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

The HKAF actively promotes inclusiveness and understanding via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

The HKAF officially launched the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation in 2022 to provide greater financial security and longterm sustainability for the Festival. Donations to the Foundation will help the Festival to present large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for. (2023

莫扎特於 1770 年與父親首赴 意大利期間,獲著名的博洛尼 亞愛樂學院破格取錄,在馬天 尼神父門下修習作曲,深受傳 統意大利的巴羅克風格薰陶, 因此當時的作品均強調旋律精 緻,此曲即為一例。定稿時作 曲家只有十六歲。

工整輕盈的第一樂章充分奠下 樂曲愉悅的基調,高音聲部安 排大量十度、十二度的複音程 構成新穎脫俗的和聲。三個樂 章是典型快–慢–快佈局,第 二樂章固然抒情,悄悄流淌於 中低音聲部的不協和音與高音 聲部岔開的切分音依然調皮。 第三樂章以迴旋曲式重現更緊 湊的主題。

莫扎特這早期之作結構精煉, 共四聲部,亦無費時改編的雙 音,故口琴四重奏改編版本也 得以保留原曲的一切精髓。

莫扎特

G 小調第一鋼琴四重奏,K478

此曲與上面的清新形成強烈對 比,於 1785 年寫成。莫扎特正 值盛年,流露大師手筆。深沉 的 G 小調,即此作和第四弦樂 五重奏、第四十交響曲等名作 的調號,尤受後世注視。

當時德奧藝壇興起在作品傾注 激烈情感的狂飆突進運動,飛 快的第一樂章由大量密集的經 過音和琶音構築,不急於解決 的第七音暗自躁動。靜謐的第 二樂章轉入近系的降 B 大調, 同樣的綿長寫法反使音樂開始 抒情。開首主題在第三樂章以 平穩的 G 大調回歸,鬱結一 掃而空。

當年成立英皇口琴五重奏之創 舉,宛如莫扎特為樂壇帶來鋼 琴四重奏這形式。原曲為鋼 琴與三部弦樂器而寫,是次鋼 琴及口琴四重奏改編版本加入 另一中音聲部,有助豐富細 節,在肌理而言,亦使四部相 對小巧的口琴能與樂器之王旗 鼓相當。

馬歇爾.格蘭查尼 《狂想曲》,作品 10

法國豎琴家和作曲家格蘭查尼 有多首作品行世,事實上, 一戰爆發導致觀眾與音樂家俱 歿,曾令年青的他意興闌珊, 暫停演奏。直至步入婚姻,以 及獲得在著名的楓丹白露學校 授課的機會,使他重新奮發, 並於 1921 年寫下此獨奏。只憑 一部豎琴,但效果卻媲美交響 樂,標誌他的風格邁向成熟。 格蘭查尼是虔誠的天主教徒, 他以《節日萬歲》這首復活節 守夜彌撒的聖詠作為旋律素 材。當時教堂音樂由男性詩班 獻唱,故此曲第一部份 G 小 調開始的聖詠主題就是中音聲 部。接繼是萬花筒般的華彩樂 段,疾速的六連音琶音、清澈 的泛音和半音階在極為寬廣的 音域中倘佯。聖詠主題在最後 部分以穩定的節奏重現,重新 確立大調調性。

其後,格蘭查尼在紐約茱莉亞 學院擔任豎琴系主任。在美 式英語中,口琴的叫法亦為 Harp,碰巧與這晚音樂會的主 角相合。

愛德華.基普斯基 悲歌小協奏曲

基普斯基近年屢獲各大作曲比 賽獎項。有別於埋首藝術科技 或先鋒音樂語彙的同輩,現年 36 歲的俄羅斯作曲家擅寫古典 音樂,亦是俄羅斯豎琴學會的 中堅。他的眾多作品,由簡短 的行板到大型交響樂,均為豎 琴此樂器而作。

開首滯緩的不協和音使人頓覺 悲涼,引出豎琴主題。基普 斯基往往在半音級進和弦或動 機出現時短暫轉換更為躊躇的 2 / 3 拍號。中低兩聲部在這單 樂章的小品中屢有發揮,各與 豎琴有甚長的單獨對答。獨奏 華彩樂段過後,主題先是更為 厚實地再現,再漸漸褪去,結 束全曲。

這首樂曲本為豎琴及弦樂四重 奏所作。陳毅堅改編給豎琴及 口琴五重奏的版本並非普通的移 植,他不避轉換和增繁音符, 務求樂曲最為適合口琴演奏。 額外加入的中音口琴,亦增加了 音樂的張力和情感表現,這亦 得助於客席樂手莊庭皓對音色 和音量要求的完美掌握。

蕭斯達高維契

D 大調第四弦樂四重奏, 作品 83

這首樂曲是蕭斯達高維契於 1949 年失業期間所創作的,當 時蘇聯政府整頓文藝界,不容 許只着重形式和技巧的創作。 為此,作曲家把猶太民間音樂 作為此曲及同期的第二鋼琴三 重奏的音樂素材,借以音樂排 遣自身苦難的猶太人來明志, 溢於言表。

第一樂章的 D 大調固然富民間 色彩,但這明亮的調亦常象徵 權力。第二樂章轉入小調,圓 舞曲的活力似乎仍無法抑壓不 安。巨大的悲憤在一氣呵成的 第三和第四樂章迸發,高音嘶 吼,低音肅殺。民間音樂主題 最後迴光返照,難阻全曲無奈 地結束。

英皇口琴五重奏曾演繹五首蕭 斯達高維契的作品,此版本雖 於多年前已完成改編,卻從未 公開演出。口琴的金屬音色在 這充滿異國情調又悲壯的作品 中有不同色相,高音口琴激憤 填膺,中音與低音口琴則表達 心如鐵石的堅決。

Mozart: Divertimento in F Major, K138

During Mozart’s first journey to Italy, he was admitted to the famous Philharmonic Academy of Bologna in 1770 and studied composition under Father Giovanni Martini, who imbued the young Mozart with traditional Italian Baroque style. This piece, emphasising exquisite melodies, is a case in point. The composer was only 16 when it was completed.

A typical fast-slow-fast layout prevails in the three movements. The first movement establishes a jovial temperament, and the top solo line is arranged with extensive compound intervals of tenths and twelfths to form memorable harmonies. Despite the lyricism of the second movement, the dissonances that flow stealthily through the bass and tenor and the syncopations that diverge in the treble remain mischievous. A more compact theme is recapitulated in the third movement along with a rondo form.

This refined early Mozart composition maintains all of the original essences after the arrangement for the same four-part harmonica quartet without costly alterations of double stops.

Mozart: Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, K478

In stark contrast to the freshness of the above, this piece was written in 1785, while Mozart was in his heyday as a maestro. The melancholic G minor, the key of this and other masterpieces such as the String Quintet No. 4 and Symphony No. 40, has been of particular interest to future generations.

The Storm and Stress Movement, which saturated the works with intense emotions, was prevalent in the AustroGerman art scene at the time. Arpeggios and passing notes are abundant throughout the rapid first movement. The leading tones, not eager to be resolved, are implicitly agitated. With elongated phrasing, the second movement's placid modulation to the closely related B-flat major gives the music a lyrical aspect. The opening theme returns in the third movement in a steady G major, sweeping away the malaise.

Mozart's contribution to the new piano quartet form and the founding of the King's Harmonica Quintet are both innovations. The piece was originally for piano and three strings, but this arrangement for piano and harmonica quartet brings an additional tenor part, which enhances the intricacies and elevates the four relatively diminutive harmonicas to be comparable with the piano in terms of texture.

Marcel Grandjany: Rhapsodie, Op. 10

French harpist and composer Marcel Grandjany published a considerable variety of compositions, but in fact the WWI, which led to the fatality of listeners and musicians, dismayed the young composer, and he ceased performing, until marriage and the opportunity to teach at the esteemed Fontainebleau Schools motivated him. In 1921, this solo—on par with a symphony—marked the maturity of his musical style.

The Easter vigil mass chant “Hail festal day” is utilised as musical material by devout Catholic Grandjany. Back then, church music was sung by male choristers, so the G minor first part of this harp solo is in the middle register, followed by a kaleidoscopic cadenza with lightning sextuplet arpeggios, pristine harmonies and chromatic scales in an enormously wide range. In the last section, the chant theme reappears with a comfortable pace and reinstate a major key. Grandjany then headed the harp department at the Juilliard School in New York. A fantastic coincidence is that “Harp” is another name for tonight’s protagonist in American English.

Eduard Kiprsky: Elegiac Concertino for Harp and String Quartet

In recent years, Kiprsky has triumphed across composition competitions. The 36-yearold Russian specialises in writing classical music and is a stalwart of the Russian Harp Society, despite contrasts to his contemporaries who are dedicated to Art Tech or avantgarde musical language. His compositions for harp range in length from short movements to lengthy symphonies.

The opening's slow disharmony presents as a dismal introduction to the harp's theme. Kiprsky often creates a momentary metre change— a more hesitant 2/3 metre— when motif or chromatic chord movements emerge. In this single-movement creation, the middle and bass parts are frequently featured, both with a prolonged counterpoint to the harp. After the cadenza flourishes, the motif returns in a more substantial gesture, followed by a gradual fading.

This work was initially for harp and string quartet, whereas Chan Ngai-kin does not refrain from modifying and adding notes for harp and harmonica quintet—it is thus not a straightforward conversion. The extra tenor harmonica further increases the music's tension and emotional expression, as the guest player Ivan Chong Ting-ho has accomplished the Quintet’s desired timbre and volume.

Shostakovich: String Quartet No 4 in D Major, Op. 83

Shostakovich was unemployed when he composed this work in 1949 because of the Soviet government's crackdown on the art scene, which prohibited formalised compositions. Not only is Jewish folk music the material for this work and the concurrent Piano Trio No. 2, but the composer also uses it as a metaphorical eulogy for those who relieve suffering through music.

Although the opening D Major movement is folkloric, this bright key occasionally denotes power. The vitality of waltz appears unable to quell the agitation in the second movement, which modulates into a minor key. Successive third and fourth movements burst out in great anguish, with screaming high notes and dreadful bassline. A folk music theme exhibits a second wind eventually, but it still cannot restrain a reluctant end.

Although decades ago, this version has never been played in public by the King’s Harmonica Quintet, who have already performed five of Shostakovich’s string quartets. In this exotic and tragic work, the harmonica's metallic timbres are distinguishable—the treble trembles with outrage, while the tenor and bass express heartfelt determination.

口琴五劍俠

Blowing in the Wind

口琴演奏在疫情下挑戰重重,由於演奏時口琴必須在嘴唇上左右移動,難以如長笛等其他管樂器般, 佩戴着具開口的特製口罩來演奏。於 1997 年世界口琴節中勇奪冠軍的英皇口琴五重奏,原定在 2022 年第三度踏上香港藝術節舞台,唯最終不敵疫情高峰,無奈延期。幸好他們能於 2023 年重返香港藝 術節,讓觀眾見證他們如何跨越三十五載仍無懼風雨,繼續演出。

The pandemic has posed a great challenge for harmonica performances. Due to the way the instrument is played, harmonica players are unable to wear the kind of musician masks specially designed for wind instrument players. The King’s Harmonica Quintet, which won the champion title at the World Harmonica Festival in 1997, was scheduled to perform at the Hong Kong Arts Festival for the third time in 2022. Unfortunately, that had to be postponed due to the pandemic. The quintet is now due to return in 2023 and audiences can witness the vitality of the ensemble after playing together for more than 35 years.

創口琴演奏古典樂風潮

英皇口琴五重奏由英皇書院五 位來自不同年級的校友組成, 成員中學畢業後即使分別在不 同的大學就讀,仍無阻兄弟 情,全因彼此同樣熱愛口琴。 中音口琴手駱英棋憶述初中 時,總會趁小息練習口琴:「我 們的樂團是以師兄教師弟的傳 統指導模式開始的。」而這種 教學方式也延至香港口琴界的 晚輩中。

當初他們以口琴演奏古典音 樂,算是音樂界的異類,而且 將音樂作品編成口琴五重奏的 創新路更非易行: 口琴的發聲 有吹吸的規範,改編時須考慮 不同種類的口琴配搭與其他樂 器的配合。因此,英皇口琴 五重奏加入一支額外的中音口 琴,兩支中音口琴共有三個八 度的音階與高音口琴重疊,又 有一個八度音階與低音口琴重 疊,再加上聲量強化了的中音 聲部,擴大了演奏的可能性,

成員堅持編曲時不簡化原曲, 同時要求展現口琴技巧。例如 他們把蕭斯達高維契的弦樂四 重奏作品改編後,所有段落的 演奏難度均極高,要求不同口 琴聲部之間高度協調,但十五 首作品中英皇口琴五重奏已演 奏過其中五首,這場音樂會亦 會帶來第六首:D 大調第四弦 樂四重奏,作品 83,這首曲他 們在 2000 年首登香港藝術節舞 台前已開始編曲。每次的編曲 均由個別成員主導、在練習中 作微調,可想而知過程繁複又 費時。幸好他們偶爾有陳毅堅 相伴,陳同為口琴演奏者,熟 知口琴結構的特點,他的編曲 更貼合英皇口琴五重奏的理想 效果。而這次音樂會的曲目也 有兩首由他所編。

俄羅斯音樂之旅

多年來,英皇口琴五重奏堅持 盡可能以原班人馬亮相,即使

有成員未能出席演出,也至 少要有三名英皇口琴五重奏成 員,加上新成員頂替。由於成 員劉振邦移民,此次音樂會便 由與他們曾多次合作的莊庭皓 在下半場演奏第一中音口琴。 音樂會分為上、下半場,上半 場由英皇口琴五重奏的四名成 員演奏莫扎特的兩首曲目,藉 輕快的旋律將觀眾帶入狀態。 而他們在 G 小調第一鋼琴四重 奏,作品 K478 中將首次與鋼琴 家羅乃新共奏一首完整作品, 此曲目亦是最早為鋼琴四重奏 創作的作品之一。

這次也是英皇口琴五重奏首次 與豎琴手于丹合作,音樂會的 下半場將在于丹的豎琴獨奏作 品中展開,再由英皇口琴五重 奏帶領觀眾踏上一場俄國音樂 之旅,音樂會將會以前述的蕭 斯達高維契作品作為壓軸。

A brotherhood based on a shared passion

The members of the quintet were co-alumni of different years at King’s College and then went to different universities. But their shared passion for harmonica playing brought this brotherhood back together.

Rocky Lok Ying-kei recalls how the quintet rehearsed together

during recess in their junior high school years. “Our quintet was formed on the basis of typical mentorship among seniors and juniors,” he says. And under their influence, younger harmonica players in Hong Kong continue to be coached in the same way.

They stood out in the world of music for playing classical

pieces on harmonica, yet arranging musical works for a harmonica quintet isn’t exactly easy. Harmonicas have both blow and draw notes, and the compatibility of the sounds produced by different harmonicas and other instruments must be considered when arranging these works. By adding an extra tenor

harmonica, the twin tenors can make certain octaves overlap with the treble and bass notes. While adding dynamic strength to the middle voices, they are able to exploit the potential of the harmonica and allow music from different instruments to blend in better during their performances.

When arranging compositions, members of the quintet never simplify the original music as they seek to demonstrate the capabilities of the harmonica using various techniques. For instance, with the rearranged String Quartets of Shostakovich, all movements are extremely difficult and demand high levels of collaboration among players. Of Shostakovich’s 15 String Quartets, the quintet has already performed five of them, and will present its sixth—String Quartet No. 4 in D Major, Op. 83—at the upcoming HKAF concert. The quintet had already started arranging this piece before its first performance at the HKAF in 2000, demonstrating how the arrangement process has always been complex and time consuming. Certain members usually first take the lead when arranging a piece, but the arrangement is revised and modified at every practice session as the members seek perfection. Luckily, they can occasionally work with their friend, experienced harmonica player Chan Ngai-kin, whose arrangements perfectly align with the quintet’s goals. He was responsible for rearranging two

pieces for the 2023 concert.

A journey into Russian music

Over the years, the quintet has endeavoured to perform with its original line-up. When at least three members are available, they invite guest performers to replace any absent members. At the upcoming concert, with original member Lau Chunbong now living overseas, the quintet has invited Ivan Chong Ting-ho, who has worked with the ensemble many times, to play the first tenor harmonica in his place. The concert is divided into two parts. In the first half, the four original members of the quintet will play two pieces by Mozart, hoping to draw in audiences with lively melodies. This will be their first time performing a full work with pianist Nancy Loo as they play Piano Quartet No1 in G minor, K478, which is also one of the major works first composed for piano quartet.

The quintet and harpist Dan Yu will also collaborate for the first time at the concert. The second half of the concert begins with a solo by Yu. The quintet and Yu will then take the audience on a journey through Russian music and will conclude the concert with the abovementioned work by Shostakovich.

英皇口琴五重奏成立於 1987 年,成員屢獲個人殊榮,至 1997 年在德國世界口琴節重奏 項目奪得冠軍,獲《明報》讚 譽「讓世界驚艷」。英皇口琴 五重奏創建合奏形式,開拓曲 庫,與志同道合友人成立香港 口琴協會扶掖後進,亦常獲邀 任世界和亞太大賽評判、大師 班講者,是香港乃至世界口琴 界的翹楚。

早期的英皇口琴五重奏以改編 古典室樂作品奠立曲庫,當 年奪魁之作即為德伏札克《第 十二弦樂四重奏,作品 96, 「阿美利堅」》。千禧年後, 五重奏除繼續展示對古典樂的 深刻見解,亦肩負推廣本地新

音樂的使命,開始廣邀香港 作曲家譜寫新作,碩果已逾 三十套,時長、風格和編制多 樣。五重奏至今三登香港藝術 節舞台,亦曾聯袂香港管弦樂 團、香港小交響樂團和香港中 樂團等本地頂尖旗艦職業樂團 獻技,海外演出足跡也已遍及 二十個國家共三十個城市。

五重奏由高音口琴手何百昌和 陳樹強、中音口琴手劉振邦和 駱英棋、低音口琴手關文豪組 成。自劉振邦於 2015 年移民 後,他在合奏中兼顧高中低聲 部的全面能力是客席中音口琴 均須達到的嚴格標準,好使五 重奏每有演出,示人的總是卅 五年如一的卓越音感與嚴謹態

度。而是次加入之客席成員, 就正好是完全契合本次音樂會 所需的冠軍級演奏家莊庭皓。 何百昌演奏用的純銀口琴為挪 威名匠波列斯德鑄造,陳樹強 使用的 Kepler 十四孔木蓋板鍍 金琴格口琴為本地製琴師劉天 麟所設計及製作,駱英棋的 S64X 中音口琴由德國和萊樂 廠提供簧板以安裝在日本名匠 岸直孝所製的全木/全銀口琴 上,而關文豪聲音雄厚的低音 全木口琴亦為岸直孝新作。

Members of the King's Harmonica Quintet, established in 1987, have received various accolades from solo and duet competitions. The Quintet was described by HK Magazine as “world-beaters and heavenly harps” in 1997 after winning the championship of the World Harmonica Festival in Germany. By initiating instrumentation and expanding repertoires, establishing the Hong Kong Harmonica Association alongside other enthusiasts to nurture newcomers, as well as promoting jury members for competitions and as masterclass presenters in international and Asia-Pacific harmonica festivals, the Quintet is a leading harmonica ensemble in Hong Kong and worldwide.

The early King's Harmonica Quintet founded its repertoire base with classical chamber music arrangements, just as it was crowned world champion with Dvorák's String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96, “American”. Since the start of the new millennium, while also demonstrating its profound insight into classical music, the Quintet has been actively championing new music in Hong Kong by commissioning local composers to produce more than 30 sets of new works of various durations, styles and configurations. It has been featured three times at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, and has collaborated with local flagship professional orchestras

the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. It has performed overseas in 30 cities across 20 countries.

The Quintet is made up of Ho Pak-cheong and Kenneth Chan Shu-keung (treble harmonica), Lau Chun-bong and Rocky Lok Ying-kei (tenor harmonica) and Johnny Kuan Man-hou (bass harmonica). Lau emigrated overseas in 2015, and guest tenor harmonica players at current performances (including the guest performer at the latest concert, Ivan Chong Tingho) are required to match his ability to play a wide spectrum of registers. This quest for perfection has enabled the Quintet to consistently deliver outstanding performances with distinguished musicality and rigorous musicianship during the past 35 years.

Ho uses a silver treble harmonica made by the renowned Norwegian harmonica maker Georg Pollestad. Local harmonica maker Dick Lau designed and fabricated the Kepler wooden cover with gold-plated alloy comb 14-hole harmonica that Chan uses. Lok plays with Hohner original S64X reedplates installed on all-wood / all-silver harmonicas made by Japanese craftsman Naotaka Kishi, whose newly made allwood bass harmonica model is used by Kuan.

何百昌為威爾斯親王醫院的骨 科主管、香港中文大學醫學院 名譽臨床教授及音樂系客席口 琴導師。何百昌為香港口琴協 會的創會會長,於 1987 年與 摯友成立英皇口琴五重奏,在 兩次世界賽中取得多項殊榮, 並曾於全球廿二個國家共超過 四十個城市演出。2002 年,以 獨奏家身分在黃大德的指揮下 與香港管弦樂團合奏《慕迪之 小組曲》,多次獲邀作亞太口琴 節的評審及表演嘉賓。2005 年 成為首位香港人被委任為德國 世界口琴節之評委。何百昌擅 於組織工作,曾主理 2004 年第 五屆亞太口琴節及 2023 年第一 屆香港國際半音階口琴大賽。 何百昌因成就卓越,於 2002 年獲選為香港十大傑出青年, 2007 年獲政府頒授行政長官社 區服務獎狀,2022 年又獲邀為 共創明天 Teen 計劃星級導師。

Ho Pak-cheong is the chief of orthopaedic services at Prince of Wales Hospital, and an Honourary Clinical Professor of the Faculty of Medicine and an Honourary Tutor of the Music Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He established the King's Harmonica Quintet with friends in 1987 and won numerous titles at the World Harmonica Competition in 1995 and 1997.

Ho also served as the founding president of the Hong Kong Harmonica Association from 2002-09.

Ho has appeared on concert stages in 40 cities in 22 countries all over the world. In 2002, he performed James Moody's Little Suite as a soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Samuel Wong. He has been an adjudicator and guest performer at the biennial Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival (APHF) since 1996, and became the first Hong Kong jury member at the World Harmonica Competition in Germany in 2005.

Ho has rich organising experience, serving as chairman of the fifth APHF in Hong Kong in 2004 and more recently the first Hong Kong International Chromatic Harmonica Competition in 2023. In recognition of his accomplishments, he received the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong Award in 2002 and the Chief Executive's Commendation for Community Service from the Hong Kong Government in 2007. In 2022, Ho was invited to serve as the star mentor in the Strive and Rise Programme organised by the HKSAR Government.

陳樹強是英皇口琴五重奏的創 始成員。1995 年於日本橫濱世

界口琴大賽中,與另一成員駱 英棋合作,取得了二重奏公開 組亞軍。兩年後,於德國世界 口琴大賽中夥拍何百昌參加公 開組,取得了第二名; 同年, 五重奏獲得了重奏組冠軍。

陳樹強在英皇口琴五重奏中作 為第二口琴手,演出經驗豐 富,演奏技巧及音樂造詣出 色,在五重奏演奏之中取得極 佳的平衡作用,被譽為擔任此 聲部的最佳人選。

除了精通吹奏口琴之外,陳樹 強亦有吹奏長笛和木笛。現時 於香港醫學會管弦樂團擔任長 笛及短笛手。由於醉心早期音 樂,近年不斷研習木笛及巴羅 克長笛,並參與不少歐洲教授 和演奏家的大師班及課堂。

Kenneth Chan is a founding member of the King's Harmonica Quintet. In 1995, when the Quintet made its overseas debut in Yokohama, Japan, Chan partnered with fellow Quintet member Lok Ying-kei to play duo in the World Harmonica Championship and received the first runnerup prize. Two years later, when the Quintet won the World Harmonica Festival Competition in Germany, Chan partnered with Ho Pak-cheong to play duo and again took the first runnerup position in the open category of the competition.

Chan is the most experienced second treble harmonica player in the Quintet and is regarded as the best candidate to fill the position because of his balanced harmonica technique and outstanding musicianship.

Apart from being a proficient harmonica player, Chan is a versatile musician who also performs on the flute and recorder. He is the flautist cum piccoloist in the Hong Kong Medical Association Orchestra. His profound interest in early music led him to pick up the recorder and baroque flute, and participate in many European maestros' masterclasses and lessons.

駱英棋自 2011 年起擔任和萊公 司口琴品牌的國際代言人。

八十年代在學期間,他於香港 校際音樂節屢次獲獎(含獨奏 與二重奏的四次冠軍與兩次亞 軍)。九十年代於世界口琴節數 獲冠、亞、季軍。自 1999 年起 獲邀在澳洲、新加坡、馬來西 亞、中國與香港多地作獨奏演 出。自 1995 年起,他於各國際 性與香港本地口琴節、音樂節 等比賽中擔任評審逾五十次, 並演出及主講。

駱英棋自 2002 年起為香港口 琴協會創會會員,曾隨其樂團 在逾十五個城市演出過,期間 曾任該會的秘書、司庫、副會 長、會長、顧問及理事。

駱英棋擁有三十多年跨國企業 區內首席財務官經驗,並持 有七個專業學會的資深會員資

格。他亦是香港中文大學工商 管理碩士校友會會長( 2005 年至 2010 年)、課程顧問委員 會成員( 2005 年至 2012 年)、 香港大學專業進修學院外聘委 會( 2014 年至 2016 年)、香港 理工大學文化及設施推廣處委 員( 2014 年至 2018 年),並自 1997 年起擔任香港數所大學及 專業學會的區內客席主講。

Rocky Lok has been a harmonica international endorser for Hohner since 2011.

He was the four-time champion and two-time runner-up in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival Solo and Duet Classes in the 1980s, and the champion and runner-up at the World Harmonica Festival in the 1990s. Lok has performed as an invited soloist in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, mainland China and Hong Kong since 1999. He has judged (more than 50 times), performed and talked at international and local harmonica and music festivals since 1995.

Lok is a founding member of the Hong Kong Harmonica Association (since 2002) and has performed in more than 15 cities. He has served as the association's Secretary (since 2003), Treasurer (since 2005), Vice-President (since 2009), President (since 2011), and Advisor cum Director (since 2017).

He has worked as a Chief Financial Officer of multinational companies in the

region for more than 30 years and is a fellow member of seven professional bodies. Lok served as President of the MBA Alumni Association of the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2005-10 and as a member of the Advisory Board of CUMBA Programmes from 2005-12. Other notable roles include External Examiner of SPACE, University of Hong Kong, from 2014-16, a Council Member of the Cultural Promotion and Events Office at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University from 2014-18, and a guest speaker at tertiary institutes and professional bodies in the region (since 1997).

莊庭皓是資深半音階口琴導 師,曾於香港教育大學、香港 城市大學、香港理工大學、英 皇書院、何東中學、聖保羅男 女中學和英皇書院同學會小學 等作口琴教學,為學界口琴薪 火相傳不遺餘力。

莊庭皓現為 Perfect Fourth 口 琴四重奏的半音階口琴手。自 2011 年起,他獲委任為香港口 琴協會理事。2018 年起,他獲 委任為香港口琴協會副會長。 2018 年 6 月,他遠赴德國完成 和萊口琴維修培訓,成為香港 首位和萊認證的口琴維修技師。

Ivan Chong was the champion in the Duo (Adult) category at the World Harmonica Festival (WHF) in 2009. Since 2014, he has been appointed as an adjudicator and invited as a guest performer at the Seoul International Harmonica Festival, the Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival (APHF) and the WHF.

Chong is an experienced chromatic harmonica teacher. Having taught the harmonica at different educational institutions, he is devoted to cultivating the spirit of “passing the torch” of harmonica culture at local educational institutions.

Chong is currently the chromatic harmonicist in the Perfect Fourth Harmonica Quartet. Since 2011, he has served as the Director of the Hong Kong Harmonica Association (HKHA). He was appointed the Vice-President of the HKHA in 2018. Chong completed a training programme in Trossingen, Germany, in 2018 and was accredited as the first Hohner Harmonica Service Technician in Hong Kong.

文化藝術發展的貢獻。

Johnny Kuan's virtuosity has astonished harmonica players and audiences around the world. “The bass playing is outstandingly sensitive,” exclaimed Douglas Tate, the late British harmonica legend. Kuan is also the president of the Hong Kong Harmonica Association, and the music director and conductor of its Orchestra. As an experienced harmonica orchestra conductor, he has meticulously interpreted various classical and modern works. He has conducted the Association Orchestra to premiere many original largescale pieces by famous Hong Kong composers such as Joshua Chan, Hui Cheung-wai, Chan Ka-fu and Mui Kwongchiu. He often appears at the Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival, World Harmonica Festival and Singapore Youth Festival as an adjudicator, guest performer and guest speaker. In 2020, he was awarded the Certificate of Commendation by the HKSAR Government for his contributions to promoting the development of culture and art.

羅乃新藝術成就不凡,且多才 多藝,既是鋼琴演奏家,又是 電台節目主持、演員、作家及 教育工作者。她現任教於香港 演藝學院、香港浸會大學、香 港中文大學及香港大學。羅乃 新畢業於美國茱莉亞音樂學院 及英國皇家北方音樂學院,師 承蒙茲、馬蓋斯、貝利慕特、 阿戈斯堤、伯格史茲和溫頓。

羅乃新曾與歐美和亞洲多個樂 團合作,包括茱莉亞交響樂 團、丹麥電台交響樂團、克羅 地亞蕯格勒布電台交響樂團、

希臘塞薩洛尼基國家交響樂 團、新加坡交響樂團及菲律賓

Nancy Loo is one of the most versatile artists in Hong Kong, being pianist, radio programme host, actress, writer and educator all in one. She currently teaches at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong. She attended the Juilliard School and The Royal Northern College of Music. Her teachers included Mieczyslaw Munz, Adele Marcus, Vlado Perlemuter, Guido Agosti, Ryszard Bakst and Derek Wyndham.

Loo has performed in concerts in Europe, North America and Asia. She has appeared as a soloist with The Juilliard Orchestra, Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Zagreb Radio Symphony Orchestra, Thessaloniki State Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic of

the Philippines. In Hong Kong, she has played with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. She appears frequently in festivals and events on the local music scene. She was the founder of the piano and woodwind sextet ‘Les Six’ and is currently a member of the ‘LENK Quartet’.

Apart from stage performances, Loo is active in the recording studio. Her notable recordings include Nai-Chung Kuan’s Ambush from All Sides with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra; Doming Lam’s Moonlight on the Spring River; Schoenberg’s Lieder with soprano Jasmine Law. Loo has also contributed to the soundtracks of films The Map of Sex and Love (2001), The Source of Love (2002) and more. She has been named one of the city's Ten Outstanding Young Persons, was a recipient of the Medal of Honour presented by the HKSAR Government and was named Artist of the Year (Music) by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. She has served as a volunteer for inmate rehabilitation since 2012 and she teaches music in prisons.

于丹自 2001 年在第五屆美國國 際豎琴大賽中勇奪金獎後,曾 到美國、歐洲、亞洲演出,大 獲好評,又於紐約林肯中心杜 利音樂廳及倫敦威格摩音樂廳 舉行獨奏會和室樂音樂會,她 的專訪特輯亦在中國中央電視 台中文國際頻道作全球播出。

2011 年,與香港管弦樂團合 作,為盛宗亮的豎琴協奏曲 《鄉思》作首演。

于丹曾於中國各大音樂學院、 英國皇家音樂學院,以及美國 各地主持豎琴大師班。2008 年 定居香港後,教授豎琴,學生 在法國、日本、俄羅斯、塞爾 維亞、韓國、中國內地、香 港、美國舉辦的國際及全國比 賽中,屢獲殊榮。她錄有《夜 鶯》及《春江花月夜》兩張獨 奏 CD。

Dan Yu was a gold medallist at the prestigious fifth USA International Harp Competition in 2001 and has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia to critical acclaim. She has appeared in solo recitals and chamber concerts at Alice Tully Hall, New York and Wigmore Hall, London, and was featured in a documentary broadcast worldwide by CCTV 4 in China. In 2011 she gave the Asian premiere of Bright Sheng's Never Far Away for harp and orchestra with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dan Yu has given harp masterclasses at music conservatories in China, the Royal Academy of Music in London and in the USA. Since moving to Hong Kong in 2008, her students have won prizes at international and national competitions in France, Japan, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, mainland China, Hong Kong and the USA. Her recordings include two solo CDs titled The Nightingale and Spring on the Moonlit River.

Dan Yu holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and an Artist Diploma from Indiana University. Currently she is Music Director of the Hong Kong Harp Chamber, and a harp instructor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Dan Yu was Co-Chair of the Host Committee for the World Harp Congress 2017 held in Hong Kong. In 2013 and 2019 she served on the jury of the USA International Harp Competition. “A unique and major talent... she's already in a class by herself,” said the New York Concert Review
