City of Dreams Pavilion

Stack Trace Pavilion Stack Trace I provides a secluded space for performance and education where the relationship between those ‘contained’ inside and those outside is reversed. Its radial plan and alternating layers of bamboo manipulate the visual permeability of the pavilion walls; people inside can observe through panorama those outside, while those outside can only glimpse in. The pavilion is based on a synthesis of the architectural concepts of modularity and sectioning expressed through use of recycled pallets and layered sustainable bamboo.

Modularity

Stack Trace produces from repeating structural units a free-form volume. Gramazio & Kohler’s Structural Oscillations, Venice, 20072008, explored this concept with the robotic placement and rotation of bricks as an irreducible component of architecture along a continuous curve to generate three-dimensional form. Stack Trace extends this by allowing the repeating structural unit to define through linear extensions a volume beyond itself. Embedded consistencies of assembly procedures facilitate construction by hand; rotation of the modular units is uniform, and the variation in length between nearby linear elements is limited.

Sectioning

Stack Trace defines form through horizontal sectioning of a volume. Mafoombey, Helsinki, 2005, by M. Kalliala and E. Ruskeepää, used stacking of inexpensive cardboard to create internal geometries. The volume of material required for this approach at Stack Trace’s larger scale would be impracticable. Lowering the resolution of the section to the thickness of a pallet, and using linear, rather than planar, elements in alternating directions solves this but still allows a form to be read through the rotation of the bamboo around the structural axis.

Bamboo 90mm diameter

Sustainable materials that store carbon are used in the construction. The embodied energy, including that from transport, of the materials is low. The simple, modular construction allows elements to be assembled offsite or onsite, and the pavilion can be disassembled for reuse elsewhere. The pallets and bamboo can be recycled to different purposes, and have end-of-life uses as fuel sources or organic gardening matter.

New ABP Hall

In this studio you will explore a range of ideas focused around informal learning environments. These explorations will be set around and within the proposed central studio space for the new Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. This space is intended to become the focus of activity for the faculty in the future. It will be un-programmed space and a place for collaboration and invention. Initially, you will investigate and conduct research into new schools of architecture, the lineage of the studio as a spatial type, historical precedents, alternative typologies, the impact of new technologies on learning spaces, and the hall as gathering space. Armed with this knowledge you will then be asked to reconsider the central studio space and to manipulate program, form, skin, detail, furniture, structure to amplify and

The general programmatic organization of the current Schematic Design will be the starting point. You will be asked to develop design strategies that create new environments for learning and a sense of place and community for the entire Faculty within and around the central studio hall space. Indeed, your ideas will not be constrained by the conventional demarcations between enclosed and open spaces, or studio and hall, or interior and campus - they may permeate throughout. These strategies may include radical interventions and urban gestures, or operate at a finer grain of inhabitation, always loosely working within the parti of the current Schematic Design. The particular design processes of our practices will form the basis of exploring and presenting your design. There will be an opportunity for interaction with the Boston based office of NADAAA. Studio Leaders: Stefan Mee is a Principal at John Wardle Architects and a design leader within the practice, having joined in 1994 following graduation in Architecture from the University of Melbourne. He has worked on projects of all scales at John Wardle Architects, including many successful design competitions. Jasmin Williamson is an Architect at John Wardle Architects and is leading many aspects of the new building for the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning. Bryon Kinnaird from the Faculty of Architecture, Building & Planning will also be involved in the studio. Studio participants will include several others from John Wardle Architects and NADAAA, including John Wardle, Nader Tehrani as well as other guests during the

Tessellation at FABLAB Window Concept Diagram The idea behind this tessellation is inspired by the new ‘Melbourne Model’ program in the University of Melbourne education system. This system changed the old scheme of specialization into more cross-disciplinary program. At the moment, in the Faculty of Architecture Building Planning (ABP), there is only one bachelor degree which is Bachelor of Environment (B.env). After students graduate from this degree, they could choose variety of 8 specific post-graduate program. Architecture, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, and Property, are few examples of the major area. The initial thought of this tessellation was to create a pattern that could reflect the scheme of Mel-

bourne Model. The lines that come out from one point illustrate the current education program in ABP. There are a lot of options that student can choose for their master program. Then, lines that intersect each other attempt to represent the notion of cross-disciplinary, where people that come from different education background could study and interact together. This tessellation will be located in the front window of FabLab, just beside the main entrance of ABP building. Definitely, it will be one of the visual appearances for people (staff, student or visitor) that passing or coming to the building. So this tessellation has to work as one of the story teller about ABP Faculty. It has to represent art, creativity, design, and etc. That is the reason why the overall shape of this tessellation is not flat, because it tries to give the sense of sculptural object or a piece of art. The shape of the tessellation starts from considerably flat (near the entrance) and start to get bigger as it move further from the entrance. It was intentionally made in order to blend the tessellation with the building.

This is the final morphed of the module into the surface boxes; it starts pretty flat and similar, and then drastically changes at one point.

The 1: 5 physical model was made by laser cutter, using 2mm boxboard. The assembly of all elements used the grillage structure. Traditional notching method was used in order to join the intersection part. One significant thing that has to be considered when making a grillage structure fabrication is the tolerance of the notching. There is so important to test cut first before submit the file for final fabrication. In addition, labeling also plays a big role, as it would be really easy to get confuse when working with lots of pieces.

Grid ( with its specific name) in Rhino’s model, as the basis for the fabrication process.

Layout the elements into 900x600 layout. Labelled each element into its unique number / id.

Pull out all the elements from the board.

Assembly all of the elements by looking at their label names. Do the horizontal and vertical elements first, then diagonal elements after that.

Kampoeng Artist Kota Tua

Kampoeng Artist at Kota Tua Jakarta Problem Statement Nowadays, The Old Town of Jakarta is not becoming a prime tourist destination anymore. Most of the heritage buildings are damage and unmaintained, which creates a negative image for the visitors. Moreover, there is a big concern with the lack of attractive places and public facilities around the Old Town. In order to attract larger visitors, these problems need to be addressed. Visitors will not come to the Old Town just for the sake of admiring the historical buildings; they also need attractive places that can offer various activities. As currently there is a growing number of youth that visit the Old Town, there is a potential to explore the Old Town as part of creative industry that focus on the involvement of young society.

Design Proposal As the nation capital, Jakarta is ‘melting pot’ of representatives from throughout the archipelago. It is a city of contrast; the traditional and the modern, the sacral and the worldly, the poor and the rich, often stand side by side in this bustling metropolis. Kampoeng Artist at the Old Town of Jakarta tries to deal with those contrasts by using the concept of inclusive urbanism. Kampoeng Artist consists of student housing, artist housing, workshops, art retails, art library, amphitheatre, indoor theatre, 1 to 1 museum, as well as open spaces.
