Autumn arrives bringing a vibrant programme The Hive has enjoyed a busy summer, with our holiday workshops for young people proving more popular than ever. Further workshops will be taking place throughout October half-term, which will provide a seasonal flavour to our programme.

Summer saw the much anticipated arrival of DASH Disability Arts Shropshire to the centre. Both DASH and resident language school Bright Owls are expanding the Hive’s provision of arts and culture across the West Midlands. Our aim is to offer as many creative and educational opportunities as possible.

Shrewsbury Film Society is commencing its second season delivering current and classic films from around the world. We welcome the return of many events and activities. Classes with Shrewsbury Life Drawing, monthly folk and Jazz concerts, drama sessions with Shrewsbury Youth Theatre through to live action with EDW Wrestling – incorporating everything inbetween from toddlers music to open mics and much more…

September will also see a first for the centre, with the hosting of our very own Indian Summer Bazaar.

We hope this event will follow on from the success of our street party and become yet another annual extravaganza in the Hive’s calendar.

As a registered charity and not-for-profit organisation, the Hive does not just operate an arts venue in Shrewsbury. We also deliver outreach work across the region in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin, working with young people and the wider community. More information on one of our creative projects can be found on page 12.

Venue Hire The Hive has two versatile, air-conditioned spaces available for public hire: Performance space: a ‘black-box’ sound-proofed space; suitable for meetings, presentations, exhibitions, band rehearsals, live music gigs and theatre performances.

Meeting room: a comfortable space, suitable for groups of up to 10.

Live Theatre Handa’s Surprise Friday 23rd November Touring again by popular demand, The Little Angel Theatre’s vibrant production of Handa’s Surprise is visiting schools and venues this autumn. The much loved children’s book by Eileen Browne is brought to life through puppetry, dance and songs, creating an intimate, magical production with audience participation.

Set in the warmth and colour of a Kenyan village, this beautiful production recounts the gentle story of a young girl Handa, taking fruits in a basket to her friend Akeyo. On her colourful journey Handa encounters various mischievous animals who steal her fruit – a monkey, an ostrich, a zebra, a giraffe, an elephant, an antelope and a parrot!

This is a charming and funny show full of dance and rhythm, aimed at ages 2-5+.

The performance is hosted in association with Arts Alive and is part of the KinderGardens programme, providing children under 7 with an introduction to theatre.

Bespoke Creations Eco workshops and skills share Who’s Playing Learn how to recycle, reuse and renew Term-time from Thursday 19th April.

Weekly sessions for all ages and abilities drop-in for a chat, support and to learn something new. Recycle old clothes & textiles ~ make your own accessories ~ alter your clothes ~ use a sewing machine ~ learn to knit ~ recycle broken jewellery ~ monthly clothes swapshop ~ or bring your own project.

Thursdays 3-6pm Bringing small business owners from across Shropshire £4.50 per workshop together to share experiences and knowledge - providing an informal forum for supporting peers to embrace all that the wide subject of marketing has to offer.

Sessions are hosted in the Hive Gallery space and are led

by Shropshire-based marketing consultant Claire Dowdall. Events offer a creative setting for relaxed networking, group discussions and breakaway activities.

Hive Gallery Space Flaxmill Maltings Community Arts Until Friday 21st September An exhibition showcasing artwork inspired by Ditherington Flaxmill Maltings, a collection of grade one listed buildings, including the first iron framed building in the world affectionately known as the grandfather of the modern skyscraper.

Views of the Universe from my Garden Shed Monday 1st October until Thursday 20th December A collection of images by astro photographer Peter Shah.

These astro vistas were all captured from a back garden observatory on the Shropshire and Mid Wales borders – showing what is possible from relatively small and inexpensive equipment.

EDW Wrestling Come to the Hive for a night of exciting entertainment and live action with EDW! Join the excitement as fan favourites Joey Sanchez, EDWards and Tyler Hazzard do battle with the notorious Players Club over control of EDW in a series of dramatic, breath-taking encounters.

EDW has been running professional wrestling shows since 2008 and is proud to base its shows at the Hive with a frequently sold-out crowd creating a fantastic atmosphere!

The shows feature some of Britain's fastest rising stars and are ideal for people of any age, from the first-timer to the die-hard fan.

Arts Award The Arts Award is a national qualification which supports young people ages 11-25 to develop as artists and arts leaders.

As an Arts Award supporter, the Hive offers accreditation within most projects and runs informal drop-in sessions for general advice and guidance.

Drop-ins are every month on the second Tuesday (2pm – 5pm) and last Thursday (4pm – 6pm).

Hive Project Outreach Overview Encompass Encompass was an innovative project which took place between February and July 2012, leading up to performances 19th-21st July 2012. This exciting digital dance project connected people across the world and got them dancing in the run-up to the Olympics. The project worked with hundreds of young people from its base in Shropshire and, via its interactive website, across the globe.

The project integrated film and live performance to create a breath-taking show in a huge 21 metre 360-degree digital Cinemax dome, constructed by Igloovision.

Encompass 360 Digital Dance was inspired by the legacy and spirit of the birthplace of the modern Olympics.

From the latest hip-hop to, Kathak to Ballroom, every style was embraced to engage schools and community groups, and get them dancing!

William Brookes School is the UK's only Coubertin School and a specialist Performing Arts College. The project linked to Coubertin Schools around the world, inviting young people from these schools to be part of the project both through digital links on-line and through actual participation in the final performances.

Encompass was a collaboration between William Brookes School, The Edge Arts Centre and Shropshire Council Community Arts and Festivals Team, Igloovision and the Hive Music and Media Centre. Artists Chris Vandyke and Callum Goodwilliam from the Hive were part of the artistic team working with Toby Norman-Wright (Artistic Director), Sonia Sabri (Dance Artist), Anna Belyavin (Assistant Dance Artist) and Igloovision 360-degree audio visual dome.

Hive artists created the website, photographed and documented Encompass activities and led the digital media, interactive kaleidoscope and graphics elements of the project; leading workshops with young people across the county and spending days collating and editing moving image for the 360-degree dome experience.

To complement the final show in the dome, a varied programme of live dance, film and interactive digital activities took place at The Edge Arts Centre in Much Wenlock, as well as Samba drumming by Bang On.
