welcome My name is Charlie Adlard and I’m immensely proud to announce that I am The Hive’s new and very first Patron.

Let me introduce myself to you. I’ve been a professional cartoonist & illustrator for over 25 years, primarily working in the comic book industry. I’ve drawn most of the big superhero characters from Marvel and DC, dabbled in licensed properties such as the X-Files and Mars Attacks and for the past 15 years, I’ve been a co-creator of The Walking Dead, which originally started as a comic and has since swept the world as a top rated TV show.

I am a regular user of The Hive, attending films, gigs, playing music and going to life drawing sessions every Tuesday night.

I feel very strongly linked to the people, the place and I feel very at home and inspired when I walk through those front doors.

To me The Hive is a treasure we cannot afford to lose in Shrewsbury and I hope, as Patron, to support and communicate the good it does across the county and beyond. This is also an exciting time for the organisation, as for the first time last year, we set up a Creative Advisory Board which is proving to be a valuable asset to The Hive. It has led to a fantastic new brand for the organisation that I and other local creatives have been deeply involved in.

With all this going on, 2019 is shaping up to be the start of a great year for The Hive. I’m really excited to be Patron and it’s a good time to be creative in Shrewsbury!

A World Without War Svetlana Elantseva

15th December - 20th January This exhibition “A World Without War” is the first event on an international art competition for young people aged 7-17 years. This large-scale project promotes the right for children to live in joy, love and friendship. The finalists will be exhibited in Russia next year in the Moscow House of Nationalities and will represent the UK.

Back in Time

S h re w sbu r y LGBT History Festival 1 st F e bru ary - 28th February A fascinating and engaging journey through our local LGBT+ history, from 1949 to the present.

A unique collection of imagery and poignant information, set in a national context. All welcome to the free exhibition launch 6 – 7pm on Friday 1st February.

4 t h Marc h - 1st April As an illustrator Naomi takes influence from nature and often combines this with narrative to create her work. Her style is very decorative and she likes to incorporate as much hidden detail as possible using watercolour, ink and fine pen detail.

Sunday 17th February Award winning music exploring Celtic traditions and working them anew; the music is self-styled, singular and toe-tappingly good - an irresistible blend of world music and Celtic roots, presented with good humour, energy, joy and passion.

Mile Twelve

Sunday 17th March Mile Twelve is an award-winning young American band, beautifully walking the line between contemporary and traditional Bluegrass. Mile Twelve has been on a swift rise since the band’s formation in Boston in late 2014. Spring 2019 will see Mile Twelve embark on their debut tour of the UK.

Salt House

Saturday 13th April Songs are central to Salt House. New songs that sound as if they’ve always been here. Ancient ballads woken up. Poems given the tunes they deserve. Songs about place, politics, landscape and birds. The group’s attention to detail, shared passions and care for their craft sees Salt House soar.

hIVE PROJECTS

S4S Stitched Up Project

Throughout 2018, local people have taken part in practical textilebased workshops to explore how they could take a more sustainable approach to their shopping habits.

Workshops have focused on creative ways to change the clothes that they have already got or to alter charity shop purchases – upskilling participants and aiming to change their buying habits through lots of discussion about how they can do things differently.

The project has taken place at multiple locations, including The Hive where the gallery space has frequently hosted creative fashion in progress!

The Hive was invited by the University of Wolverhampton to be a community partner in this successful bid to The Arts and Humanities Research Council.

hIVE supporter spotlight Crowdfunder #HiveOpenDoor

In November 2018 we ran a Crowdfunder campaign #HiveOpenDoor to help improve the appearance and accessbility of our front entrance.

Thanks to the incredible support of people from across Shropshire and further afield, we raised a staggering ÂŁ3510.

Because of funding by Arts Council England, this can be match funded to ÂŁ7020.

We want to say a big thank you to everyone who donated to this Crowdfunder campaign and helped us reach this incredible total.

Work will start on the front entrance in 2019.
