ABOUT THE UNITED STATES TENNIS ASSOCIATION

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the U.S. and the leader in promoting and developing the growth of tennis at every level, from local communities to the highest level of the professional game. A not-for-profit organization with more than 715,000 members, it invests 100 percent of its proceeds in growing the game. It owns and operates the US Open, one of the highest-attended annual sporting events in the world, and launched the US Open Series, linking seven summer WTA and ATP World Tour tournaments to the US Open. In addition, it owns approximately 90 Pro Circuit events throughout the U.S. and selects the teams for the Davis Cup, Billie Jean King Cup, Olympic and Paralympic Games. The USTA’s philanthropic entity, the USTA Foundation, provides grants and scholarships in addition to supporting tennis and education programs nationwide to benefit under resourced youth through the National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) network. For more information about the USTA, go to usta.com or follow the official accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat.

The USTA Hawaii Pacific Inc (USTA HPI) is one of the 17 geographic Sections within the USTA organization. Incorporated in 1973, the Hawaii Pacific Inc. embraces over 7,500 individual members and 45 organizational members in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas. In addition, the Section is further subdivided into four Community Tennis Organizations (CTO’s): Kauai, Maui, East Hawaii & West Hawaii. The Hawaii Pacific Inc. is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to carrying out the goals of the national association within its region, particularly with respect to promoting tennis opportunities for juniors and adults of all abilities and all cultural backgrounds. Get Out and Play

Welcome to our 2025 USTA Hawaii Pacific Yearbook. It is a privilege and a pleasure to celebrate another year of great tennis in USTA Hawaii Pacific. We thank our USTA members who play in USTA programs and tournaments. We also thank our dedicated staff members and volunteers who are guided by our mission statement:

“Growing tennis to inspire healthier people and communities everywhere.”

In 2024, all our core USTA programs met or exceeded 2023. Our participation numbers were at least 5% or greater over previous years participation numbers.

In 2025, we will be continuing to work on The USTA Hawaii Pacific Campus. USTA Hawaii Pacific acquired a 7-acre parcel of land in the heart of Ewa Beach, and the Campus will consist of 12 tennis courts, a large parking lot and a clubhouse with offices, restrooms and storage. The Campus will host the core USTA programs including Junior Team Tennis, Junior Tournaments, Adult Leagues, Adult Tournaments, the very popular Play & Learn tennis instructional classes and after school education programs. The Campus will help us keep on rallying and growing the game in the Hawaii Pacific Section for years to come!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE | Ron

2024 Section Highlights

2024 was an exceptional year for USTA Hawaii Pacific! We exceeded all of our participation and financial goals.

Tennis Facility Management: USTA Hawaii Pacific manages 3 tennis facilities: The Hawaii Prince Tennis Club on Oahu, The Royal Kona Resort in Kona and The Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch on Maui. The Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch was closed because of the Maui wildfires and, thanks to a grant from the USTA, we were able to reopen the 11-court facility in January of 2024. The Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch hosts the Lahaina Junior Tennis Club, who lost their courts because of the wildfires, and several USTA tournaments and programs. The 3 tennis facilities allow us to expand the number of tennis courts we have access to and increase the number of USTA programs and activities.

NJTL: We established our first NJTL Chapter in Hawaii. The Betty Kanuha Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to provide after school youth programs. They currently run an after-school tennis introductory tennis program at the Old Airport tennis facility in Kona. They have added parent classes alongside the youth classes, and they are planning to start a new class in the Native Hawaiian language.

Campus: We are excited to announce the new Section tennis facility called the Campus. It will be built on a 7 acre parcel of land that we acquired from Gentry Homes Hawaii. We received the title to the property in December of 2024 and we now own the land free of debt. Park Engineering has completed the design of the Campus and we are in the process of submitting permits to the Department of Planning and Permitting. The Campus will comprise of 16 tennis courts, a large parking lot and a building with offices, storage, restrooms and a pro-shop. The Campus is located in Ewa Beach on the island of Oahu and it is adjacent to a large elementary school, Holomua Elementary School. The Campus is surrounded by over 10,000 homes and 11 public schools.

Red Ball: USTA Hawaii’s ““Shortcourt Tennis” program / Red Ball, is very important to USTA Hawaii Pacific. We have hired a full time ShortCourt/Red Ball Program Manager who will introduce and promote Red Ball in our Section calling it “ShortCourt” tennis. In addition, the ShortCourt/Red Ball Program Manager will promote tennis in the schools and coordinate and manage all festivals, fairs and expos.

Team: We have a new and highly qualified board of directors. We filled all staff positions in 2024 for the first time since the beginning of Covid. We now have an outstanding team of volunteers and staff who will lead our Section to future growth and success in conjunction with the USTA mission of 35 million players by 2035.

2024 NEIGHBOR ISLANDS YEAR IN REVIEW

KAUAI COMMUNITY TENNIS ORGANIZATION www.ustahawaii.com/kauai

CHRISTINE WATANABE, President kauaicto@hawaii.usta.com

The Kauai CTO had a wonderful 2024 as we reestablished a new Board of Directors, supported a women’s 40+ 4.0 league, and a tri-level for 4.0.  In addition, we supported all 3 High School tennis teams as well as the Muriel Osborne foundation by publicizing grants for coaches to work with junior players.  We are looking forward to an even better 2025!

COMMUNITY TENNIS ORGANIZATION www.ustahawaii.com/maui

CATHY HALL, President mauicto@hawaii.usta.com

Maui tennis is going strong, with numerous events and opportunities for both junior and adult players over the past year. Multiple junior tournaments were held on Maui this year, with participation from local and visiting players. Junior coaches who received equipment grants through USTA Hawaii Pacific have made a significant impact, and junior players are advancing in sportsmanship and skills. Many adult volunteers contribute to Maui junior tennis, dedicating considerable hours. Adult league tennis participation remains robust, with continued growth in the leagues. Sectionals for 55+, 65+, Tri-level, and Ekolu were hosted on Maui this past year, facilitated by the efforts of the Sectionals coordinator, host facility, and local volunteers. There are plans to host more sectionals in 2025. MCTO provided several travel grants to juniors and adult league teams heading to sectionals and nationals last year. Many recipients of these grants volunteer at Mauihosted events for court monitoring. MCTO has grant applications available on the USTA website for junior travel events and welcomes input from the tennis community on other grant uses. The MCTO board members, consisting of myself, Cathy Nicoloff, Clarita Balala, Jill Kanahele, Jane Sakakihara, Kris Oyama, and Mike Kinoshita, have played key roles in making adult league tennis accessible on Maui. The board helps coordinate leagues, manage costs, coordinte travel grants, schedule courts, obtain County permits, and assist with various events. Thanks to all my fellow board members for their generous contribution to benefit the community. Community members are encouraged to reach out if interested in assisting the tennis community or providing suggestions.

2024 NEIGHBOR ISLANDS YEAR IN REVIEW

WEST HAWAII COMMUNITY TENNIS ORGANIZATION

www.ustahawaii.com/westhawaii

KIRK SHORTE, President whawaiicto@hawaii.usta.com

The “2024 Wrap-Up” document summarizes USTA events in West Hawaii throughout the year. These events included junior tournaments, adult leagues, and sectional championships.

Several USTA junior tournaments were held, including the L7 Junior Singles Tournament in July with players from Seattle, Oahu, and the Big Island. In November, L7 Junior 1-Day Singles Tournaments featured 26 participants from Maui and the Big Island. The Junior Circuit Green & Orange Ball Tournament in August included players from Texas, California, and the Big Island. Finally, the Junior Circuit Winter Green Ball & Orange Ball Tournaments took place in December.

Adult leagues and championships also occurred, such as the USTA 55+ Men’s Section Championships in July, where the Kona team competed against a team from Oahu. West Hawaii fielded two teams in the USTA 55+ Mixed Doubles League Season & Sectionals. Additionally, West Hawaii teams were represented in the USTA 40+ Mixed Doubles Sectional Championships in September. The document also mentions the USTA 18+ Ekolu League Season.

A non-sanctioned Adult & Junior Turkey Singles Tournament took place at the end of November, with participants ranging from ages 9 to 73. Royal Kona Resort Tennis Club will co-host the 2025 Sectional Championships.

EAST HAWAII COMMUNITY TENNIS ORGANIZATION

www.ustahawaii.com/easthawaii

DAVE OKAMURA , President ehawaiicto@hawaii.usta.com

The East Hawaii tennis community continues to flourish. From juniors to adults and families, the positive support from the community for all tennis activities is remarkable. It is so nice to see everyone show up to help at tournaments, eat concession food and participate in fundraiser clinics. Adult league participation remained steady, similar to 2023 and for the first time in a while, EHCTO ran a tri-level league. A handful of teams advanced to nationals but the highlight of the year was when Hilo’s Aloha Aces won the Mixed 18 and Over 6.0 National Championship in Surprise, Arizona.

Hilo Junior Tennis currently has 75 juniors from 55 families. They continue to have weekly drills and match play, run three tournaments and put together Junior Team Tennis teams.

We are grateful for the partnerships we have with the County, UHH and high schools to use their courts for league play and in return, EHCTO has supported cleaning and maintenance of the courts with supplies and manpower. Again, we are so fortunate to have a supportive tennis community.

The EHCTO committee is transitioning to new members and leaders. We appreciate all that Nancy Kelly, Wana Agasa, Andrea Ueno and Jon Tokuuke have done for EHCTO and the tennis community for many years. We will have big shoes to fill.

PRESIDENT’S AWARD

Play & Learn Tennis Classes

Our Play and Learn Tennis program on Oahu and Maui provided classes at 18 facilities, private and public. Our social, accessible, active and affordable classes were enjoyed by 10,000+ students. Each session had over 110 classes to choose from. 58% of our participants are children and 42% are adults. 18+ USTA coaches share our passion and are critical in meeting the growing demand for year round lessons and play time. A special Mahalo to our USTA Play And Learn Tennis Coaches!

Children and Youth Day (CYD)

We returned to Children and Youth Day on October 6th to celebrate and honor our keiki. Like many community organizations, we were on pause due to the pandemic and was thrilled to return to the grounds of the capitol where we created a Kids Tennis space for this annual event. Many thanks to Kaiser High School and McKinley High School tennis team members that volunteered for us. This was an opportunity for us to showcase our youth programs with nearly 25,000 attendees.

Short Court Tennis

In June 2024, we introduced our new ShortCourt Tennis that offers all the great benefits of tennis just on a shorter court with a low compression ball and 23 inch rackets. The modified equipment fosters a vibrant, social atmosphere, encouraging longer rallies, skill development and lots of fun. The revolution of ShortCourt Tennis was promoted at our Play and Learn Tennis sites and the Hawaii Prince Tennis Club. A good many players who haven’t played tennis in several years and looking to ease their way back into the sport, joined our free and promotional clinics.

We also provided two free ShortCourt clinics to our local AARP Hawaii members and proved to be an ideal modified tennis activity for the 50 plus community.
