ABOUT THE UNITED STATES TENNIS ASSOCIATION
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the U.S. and the leader in promoting and developing the growth of tennis at every level, from local communities to the highest level of the professional game. A not-for-profit organization with more than 715,000 members, it invests 100 percent of its proceeds in growing the game. It owns and operates the US Open, one of the highest-attended annual sporting events in the world, and launched the US Open Series, linking seven summer WTA and ATP World Tour tournaments to the US Open. In addition, it owns approximately 90 Pro Circuit events throughout the U.S. and selects the teams for the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, Olympic and Paralympic Games. The USTA’s philanthropic entity, the USTA Foundation, provides grants and scholarships in addition to supporting tennis and education programs nationwide to benefit under resourced youth through the National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) network. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
| Russell Lum - President

Get Out and Play
Welcome to our 2024 USTA Hawaii Pacific Yearbook. It is a privilege and a pleasure to celebrate another year of great tennis in USTA Hawaii Pacific. We thank our USTA members who play in USTA programs and tournaments. We also thank our dedicated staff members and volunteers who continue to be guided by our mission: “To promote and develop the growth of tennis.”
In 2023, all of our core USTA programs met or exceeded 2022 participation numbers. Play & Learn, our introductory tennis classes, exceeded 2022 numbers by 9 % and set a new record of over 9,800 participants. Adult League participation exceeded 2022 by 5 % and we doubled the number of junior tennis tournaments conducted in 2022.
We are saddened by the losses suffered by the Lahaina wildfires. We are trying to do our part in supporting the Maui tennis community by reaching out and offering assistance to Maui Junior tennis clubs, tennis professionals, high school tennis teams, the Maui Interscholastic League and other members of the Maui tennis community. In January of this year, the USTA commenced management of the previously shuttered Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch, and is making the courts available at no cost to the Lahaina Junior Tennis Club five days a week. In addition, the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch will host the qualifying tournament for the State High School Tennis Tournament. We know that we will have continuing challenges in 2024, but we’ll be here to accept those challenges and keep on rallying in the Hawaii Pacific Section for years to come!
Russell Lum President | USTA Hawaii Pacific2022-2024 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

EXECUTIVE

Executive Director’s 2023 Highlights
2023 was an outstanding year for the USTA Hawaii Pacific. We reached or exceeded all of our participation goals for the first time since 2019!
Play & Learn: One of the major highlights of 2023 was the Play & Learn tennis program. The Play & Learn tennis program are group instructional classes at 18 locations throughout Hawaii. 60% of the participants are youth and 40% are adults. Play & Learn started 22 years ago and set a new record in 2023 with over 9,000 participants. It is our largest tennis program in terms of participants and revenue.
Tennis Facility Management: USTA Hawaii Pacific now manages 3 tennis facilities with the addition of the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch in Lahaina, Maui. The Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch is a full service tennis facility with 11 hard courts including a 3,500 seat stadium court. In recent years, the Tennis Ranch hosted several men’s and women’s Challengers, the Fed Cup with the USA versus Germany and the Legends Championship Series with former # 1 world ranked players. We also manage the Hawaii Prince Tennis Club on Oahu and the Royal Kona Tennis Club on Hawaii Island. These facilities allow us to provide USTA tennis programs and activities and expand the number of tennis courts that we have access to.
Level 2 National Selection Junior Tournament: We hosted our 15th Level 2 National Junior Tennis Tournament in October. It was a Section run tournament and we plan to host another one in 2024.
Section Tennis Facility: We acquired 7 acres from Gentry Homes Hawaii in Ewa Beach adjacent to Holomua Elementary School. We hired architect Peter Vincent & Associates to design the USTA Hawaii Pacific Campus. The Campus will include a 78 car parking lot, a building with a pro shop, offices, restrooms, a meeting room and 12 hard courts including a small stadium court. We are in the final design stage and we will apply for building permits shortly. We envision that the Campus will be the tennis “mecca” of Hawaii and the Pacific with every imaginable tennis program, activity and event.
Team: We have an excellent 16 person board of directors who will finish their two year term in November of 2024. We have an outstanding staff who are hard working, passionate and dedicated. Together, the board and staff form an outstanding unified team who will lead our Section to promote and grow tennis into the future!

PROGRAMS

In 2023, the Kauai Community Tennis Organization (KCTO) was able to support two Women’s 40+ teams compete with the winner going to Sectionals. The organization was also able to support our four high schools with a donation to support the island (Island, Kapaa, Kauai & Waimea High Schools) for equipment and play. We were able to successfully advocate to keep a public tennis court in Koloa as it had been earmarked for eight pickleball courts. Instead we were able to save one tennis court and the other court is now four pickleball courts that are used regularly. We are working to build a Plan and Learn program for the island, more league play and also hope to advocate for county court refurbishment in 2024/2025.

CATHY HALL, President cathyhall.mcto@gmail.com
Despite the tragedy on Maui this year, we are still on the courts growing the game, and tennis continues to bring us together as a community, keeping us healthy and having fun. Following the Maui wildfires, a significant grant was made to the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section to benefit Maui tennis. MCTO has been gathering input from the Maui tennis community on the best use of these funds. Initiatives already implemented include USTA HP taking over operations at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch and providing tennis equipment for several juniors’ tennis programs. MCTO also now has grant applications posted on the USTA website for junior travel events. Other funds for juniors continue to be available upon request through MCTO. Junior tennis programs continue to see growth and Maui has resumed hosting junior tournaments. MCTO has been making donations of tennis balls to all the clubs and pros this year. The MCTO board comprised of Cathy Hall, Cathy Nicoloff, Clarita Balala, Colette Watanabe, Jane Sakakihara, Jill Kanahele, and Kris Oyama all played a key part in making adult league tennis available on Maui. The board has been instrumental in helping to coordinate our leagues, managing costs, coordinating travel grants, scheduling courts, and assisting with various events. I want to thank my fellow board members for their efforts, they are an asset to our community. Please reach out to any of us if you are interested in helping your tennis community or if you have input or ideas for us to consider.

NICK YAMASAKI, President westhawaiitennis@gmail.com
The West Hawaii region has had a very busy year. We held nine tournaments between the Royal Kona Resort Tennis Club and Holua Racket and Paddle; which included Orange and Green Ball, Junior and Adult Tournaments. We also had the opportunity to host the BIIF Championships for the High School Players at the Seaside Tennis Club at the Mauna Kea Resort. It was nice to see a lot of new junior players on the court.
As for the Adult leagues, we had the privilege to host the Mixed 40, Adult 65, Tri-Level and Ekolu Sectionals at the Fairmont Orchid at Mauna Lani.
The West Hawaii Community Tennis Organization is here to help promote and develop the growth of tennis in West Hawaii, through numerous programs and grants. We were able to help support the various tournaments and leagues through our grants, including to help send our Adult 65 - Women’s 8.0 and 9.0 teams to Nationals.

NANCY KELLY, President ntk96720@yahoo.com
East Hawaii adults and juniors had another successful tennis year! In 2023 EHCTO ran nine adult leagues and had a total of 1,100 registrations, up from 993 in 2022. We also had an increase in unique player participation, from 262 in 2022 to 270 in 2023. Our highlights included hosting the first 70 & Over Doubles Invitational tournament, again hosting the Mixed 18 Sectionals, and having our Mixed 55 & Over 7.0 and 8.0 teams and our 18 & Over 2.5 team advance to Nationals. The continued success of tennis in East Hawaii is largely due to the volunteer efforts of the EHCTO board: Jane Iida, Ioana Agasa, Andrea Ueno, Jon Tokuuke, Lori Nekoba and Nancy Kelly, and LLCs Dave Okamura, Kira Mae, Sheri Kinoshita, Diane Noda, Marissa Hayashi, and Kip Nagata.
Hilo Junior Tennis also experienced growth with 125 juniors from 91 families in 2023. They hosted a July summer tournament and a Green Dot tournament in September. There were four Junior Team Tennis Leagues in the Fall with eight teams. Two teams participated in the Sectional tournament with the 3.0 (14) team winning the championship. They continued to have drills and match play and had three juniors compete in National tournaments. Thanks go out to Board members: Jill Atwal, Reiko Bando, Karen Dodo, Grace Funai, Christine Gumbs, Zaida Igawa, Michael Kanemoto, Sandy Kimura, Paige Nakano, Jenny Nishida, and J Yoshimoto for their dedication and efforts to support and promote the junior tennis program in East Hawaii.

Play & Learn Tennis Classes
Our Play and Learn Tennis program on Oahu and Maui provided classes at 18 facilities, private and public. Our social, accessible, active and affordable classes were enjoyed by 9500+ students. Each session had over 100 classes to choose from. 65% of our participants are children and 35% are adults. 18 coaches helped to serve and retain this surge of interest in tennis as a sport for a lifetime. Just like the rest of the country, we continue to share the healthy sport of tennis with many new families.
Coach Workshop
We hosted the USTA Level 1 Coach Workshop at the Hawaii Prince Tennis Club in July. 16 coaches sharpened their teaching and engagement skills in the 2 day training led by our National Coach Education Team - Steve Keller and Ricky Harper.
