ABOUT THE UNITED STATES TENNIS ASSOCIATION
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the U.S. and the leader in promoting and developing the growth of tennis at every level, from local communities to the highest level of the professional game. A not-for-profit organization with more than 715,000 members, it invests 100 percent of its proceeds in growing the game. It owns and operates the US Open, one of the highest-attended annual sporting events in the world, and launched the US Open Series, linking seven summer WTA and ATP World Tour tournaments to the US Open. In addition, it owns approximately 90 Pro Circuit events throughout the U.S. and selects the teams for the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, Olympic and Paralympic Games. The USTA’s philanthropic entity, the USTA Foundation, provides grants and scholarships in addition to supporting tennis and education programs nationwide to benefit underresourced youth through the National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) network. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
| Russell Lum - President
Tennis is booming. Let’s keep on rallying!
In 2022, it was a privilege and a pleasure to celebrate another year of great tennis in USTA Hawaii Pacific. We thank our USTA members who play in USTA programs and tournaments. We also thank our dedicated staff members and volunteers who continue to be guided by our mission: “To promote and develop the growth of tennis.”
Tennis has been booming. In 2022, tennis participation in the U.S. increased for the third consecutive year, adding one million more players to bring the total number to 23.6 million and representing a three-year increase of 33 percent. In Hawaii Pacific, our Play & Learn lesson program has experienced 27% growth over 2021 with over 8,000 registrations and Junior Team Tennis increased 24% over 2021 with over 6,000 participants.
Tennis is good for you. Our sport offers physical, mental and social benefits that enhance all of our lives. Recent studies have shown that tennis extends longevity and increases the quality of life. We are proud to share the sport of tennis with as many people as possible. We know that we will have continuing challenges in 2023, but we’ll be here to accept those challenges and keep on rallying in the Hawaii Pacific Section for years to come!
Russell Lum President | USTA Hawaii Pacific
2022-2024 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Executive Director’s 2022 Highlights
2022 was an excellent year for the USTA Hawaii Pacific. It was a return to normalcy after the disruption caused by the Covid 19 pandemic. All tennis facilities were reopened and most USTA and other tennis programs and activities resumed.

Play & Learn: One of the major highlights of 2022 was the Play & Learn tennis program. The Play & Learn tennis program are group instructional classes at 18 locations throughout Hawaii. 60% of the participants are youth and 40% are adults. Play & Learn started 21 years ago and set a record in 2022 with over 8,000 participants and a 27% increase over the previous year. It is our largest tennis program in terms of participants and revenue.
Junior Team Tennis: Junior Team Tennis came surging back in 2022 with a 24% increase over the previous year and our best year yet.
The Guam National Tennis Center: Guam is a U.S. territory in the Western Pacific Ocean and part of the USTA Hawaii Pacific. It is 3,798 miles from Honolulu and a little over an 8 hour flight. The Guam National Tennis Federation, headed up by President Torgun Smith, added 5 new tennis courts to their existing facility of 8 tennis courts and 4 junior courts.
Tennis Facility Management: The USTA Hawaii Pacific manages 3 tennis facilities in Hawaii to include the Hawaii Prince Tennis Club, the Royal Kona Tennis Club and the Alohilani Resort. These facilities allow us to provide USTA tennis programs and activities and expand the number of tennis courts that we have access to.
Level 2 National Selection Junior Tournament: We hosted our 14th Level 2 National Junior Tennis Tournament in October. It was a Section run tournament and we hope to host another one in 2023.
Section Tennis Facility: We have been saving our money and searching for land to build our own Section Tennis Facility. After several failed attempts, it looks like we have finally identified land and we are working out the details of an agreement with the land owner. The initial layout will include 10 tennis courts, a multi-purpose basketball and volleyball court, a building, a parking lot and a playground. There is room to build additional courts in the future.
Team: We have a new, excellent 16 person board of directors who started their two year term in November of 2022. We have filled all full time staff positions with highly qualified and professional staff. Together, the board and staff form an outstanding unified team who will lead our Section to promote and grow tennis in the future!

CAROLYN LUM, President

Kauai Community Tennis Organization (KCTO) stayed safe in 2022 and to our surprise we had 2 Women’s 40+ teams compete with the winner going to Sectionals and winning to travel to Nationals. The team that headed to Nationals was: Women’s 40+ 3.5 team, & “Hanalei Reign.”
Thanks to the Muriel Osborne Foundation, funds were given to each of the four high schools on island (Island, Kapaa, Kauai & Waimea High Schools) who were able to complete the 2022 season and send Kauai winners to Hawaii States in May, 2022.
On the Adult side, Christine Watanabe made the move to Kauai for good, joined the KCTO board and successfully ran a Labor Day Fun Tournament of singles, doubles and mixed doubles in spite of competition from the Kauai Marathon held luckily only on Sunday.

KCTO has high hopes for more activity in 2023 as more courts are being redone to accommodate both tennis and pickleball. We thank USTAHPS for more inspiration and guidance as normal times return.

We’re back on the courts and growing the game.
Adult league tennis continues to see good growth. Our league Captains deserve applause for all their efforts in bringing teams together. The annual Captains recognition brunch along with a live ball clinic designed for “On Court Strategy,” was the focus of this year’s event. Cathy Nicoloff, Sara Yoshinaga, Mino McLean, Barbara Wallace and Tricia Wilstead aided with on court instruction. This year Maui hosted the Adult 18 and 40 & Over Sectional events. Our thanks go out to the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch as our host facility.
A significant donation was made to MCTO this year and as a result we established the Donna Vaughn Memorial Fund. These additional funds are designated for Maui’s adult league teams who qualify and advance to USTA National Championships. All other funds for our juniors continue to be available upon request through MCTO.
Junior tennis programs under the direction of tennis professionals: Cathy Nicoloff, Lisa Poulsen, Mac Pascual, WJTC, Barbara Wallace and Tricia Wilstead to name a few, continue to see growth and the kids are enthusiastic. MCTO has been making donations of tennis balls to all the clubs/pro’s for this year.
The MCTO representatives: Chris Scharein, Cathy Nicoloff, Janie King, Jill Kanahele, Jane Sakakihara, Clarita Balala and Ted Gee, Kris Oyama and Nani Ehlinger all played a key part in making tennis available on Maui. They are instrumental in helping to coordinate our leagues, managing costs, scheduling courts, and assisting with various events. They are an asset to our community. Reach out to any of these individuals if you are interested in helping your tennis community. Mahalo, Chris

WEST HAWAII COMMUNITY TENNIS ORGANIZATION

NICK YAMASAKI, President

The West Hawaii region has had a very busy year. We held 11 tournaments at the Royal Kona Resort Tennis Club, which included Orange and Green Ball, Junior and Adult Tournaments. We also had the opportunity to host the BIIF Championships for the High School Players at the Seaside Tennis Club at Mauna Kea Resort. It was nice to see a lot of new junior players on the court.
As for the Adult leagues, we had the privilege to host the Mixed 40, Adult 65 and Ekolu Sectionals at the Fairmont Orchid at Mauna Lani.
The West Hawaii Community Tennis Organization is here to help promote and develop the growth of tennis in West Hawaii, through numerous programs and grants. We were able to help support the various tournaments and leagues through our grants, including to help send our Adult 65 - Women’s 8.0 team, Kauna’oa, to Nationals.

NANCY KELLY, President

ntk96720@yahoo.com
Tennis is alive and well in East Hawaii for adults and juniors!! In 2022 we ran nine adult leagues, adding the Mixed 55 & Over league. We had a total of 83 teams which was still below the 92 teams we had in 2018 before the pandemic. Our highlights included hosting the Mixed 18 sectionals and the men’s 65 and Over team advancing to Nationals. The continued success of tennis in East Hawaii would not be possible without the EHCTO committee and LLCs, Jane Iida, Ioana Agasa, Andrea Ueno, Jon Tokuuke, JoAnn Ishida, Dave Okamura, Kira Mae, Sheri Kinoshita, Lori Nekoba, Diane Noda, Richard Tsunoda, and Nancy Kelly.
Hilo Junior Tennis hosted a July summer tournament and a Green Dot tournament in September. There were four Junior Team Tennis Leagues in the Fall with eight teams. Two teams participated in the Sectional tournament with the 3.0 (14) team winning the championship. We continue to do drills and Match Play and had three juniors compete at National tournaments. Thanks go out to Board members, Jill Atwal, Reiko Bando, Karen Dodo, Grace Funai, Christine Gumbs, Zaida Igawa, Michael Kanemoto, Sandy Kimura, Paige Nakano, Jenny Nishida and J Yoshimoto for their dedication and efforts to support and promote the junior tennis program in East Hawaii.
Our Play and Learn Tennis program on Oahu and Maui provided classes at 20 facilities, private and public. Over 8000 students benefited from our accessible, active and affordable classes. Each session had over 100 classes to choose from. 65% of our participants are children and 35% are adults. 18 coaches helped to serve and retain this surge of interest in tennis as people ventured outside for safer recreation in our still present COVID environment. Just like the rest of the country, we had great opportunities to share the healthy sport of tennis with many new families.
