Please be advised that the island of Bali will celebrate ‘Nyepi’ on Tuesday, 12 March 2012. Nyepi is also referred to as the ‘Balinese Day of Silence’. It symbolises the beginning of the Lunar New Year in accordance to an ancient Hindu calendar system that dates back some 1,934 years. Nyepi is considered one of the most auspicious events on the Balinese religious calendar. Every effort is made to observe this occasion with a 24 hour period of quiet solitude. Nyepi is all about self reflection and is essentially a time to cleanse the island of any negativity that may have accumulated. Bali literally comes to a standstill and all form of outside activity is strictly prohibited. Guests staying on the island are asked to respect this unique tradition by remaining in the confines of their resort for the entire duration of the celebration. Nyepi begins on Tuesday, 12 March at 6.00 am and ends on Wednesday, 13 March at 6.00 am. Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport will not operate during this period. continue to page 2

Nyepi Day – The Balinese Day of Silence

Nyepi Day – In Room Movies

from first page.

A number of ceremonial rituals take place several days prior to Nyepi. The first is referred to as Melasti whereby all asacred objects from Bali’s community temples are taken to the sea to be purified. Each Balinese household will then perform a small ceremony on the day before Nyepi. This involves a series of offerings to appease the spirits of the underworld and eliminate negative elements. The underlying philosophy of Balinese Hinduism is all about striving to attain balance between the three parallel realms of the spiritual, physical and unseen worlds. In the lead up to Nyepi, Balinese community groups spend weeks crafting gigantic monster effigies called Ogoh-Ogoh. These creations are paraded through the streets in a noisy procession on the eve of Nyepi to deter evil forces from disturbing the harmony of Bali.

As per a regulation of the Government of Bali, all television providers, including cable channels, will not broadcast during Nyepi Day, however, our resort will offer 2 video channels with movies and family movies all day and food and beverages are also available round the clock should you wish to order snacks to accompany your in-room movie experience.

A local Ogoh-Ogoh parade will take to the streets of Kuta on Monday, 11 March starting at 6.00pm. The monsters will be symbolically paraded around a main intersection three times before heading to the beach for a ritual burning ceremony. Resort guests are welcome to watch the parade on the main street. However, we advise anyone who is interested to walk to the location of the parade as vehicles will not be permitted access. This is definitely a one-of-a-kind photo opportunity that is not to be missed. Most Balinese choose to observe Nyepi in their ancestral village or home compound. Any form of fire, physical work, travel or revelry is prohibited. Food is prepared one day in advance but many Balinese adults choose to fast and meditate as part of their personal journey of self contemplation.

The day after Nyepi marks a beginning and it is also a time of forgiveness where past wrongdoings are excused. Extended families gather and the New Year is welcomed with fresh and positive outlook. During Nyepi, we request that you do not leave the Resort’s grounds as a sign of respect for this cultural celebration. Swimming in the ocean or strolling on the beach is not permitted during this time. In addition, all lights and noise at the Resort will be minimized. Therefore, to ensure complete safety, the garden will be closed after sunset. We also remind you to keep your balcony light turned off during the evening. Curtains and shutters in your room must also remain closed. Members of our staff will be walking around the Resort to ensure that no lights are seen. For your convenience, the Resort has compiled an array of activities during the Nyepi break. We hope that your observance of Nyepi will be an enriching experience. The Ogoh-ogoh; a must watch exorcism parade... On the evening of the day before Nyepi, people all over Bali engage in noisy exorcism rites to drive away the buta and kala, starting in their homes and proceeding to join together at crossroads in villages and towns. Led by Brahman priests and accompanied by gamelan orchestras, people carry torches and beat drums and gongs, shouting "Get out" to the demons. Ogoh-ogoh are larger-than-life-size effigies of demons and monsters. Mounted on racks lashed together from bamboo poles, the ogoh-ogoh are carried by groups of young men in processions through the streets to the crossroads where they meet ogoh-ogoh carried by youths from other banjar, while other people shout, throw firecrackers, and fire noisemakers that resemble small cannons. For weeks before the event, (mostly) young men and boys all over Bali have been feverishly engaged in constructing the ogoh-ogoh, while older and more prosperous banjar members contribute small sums to pay for materials. Most ogoh-ogoh are constructed from bamboo and paper-mâché, but nowadays some are assembled from sculpted blocks of polystyrene foam or other materials, the painted and decorated or clothed. It is worth stressing that the young men and boys who create these incredible objects are, in most cases, not professional artists; they are residents of the same village, or neighbors in the major city of Denpasar or other towns. In recent years, ogoh-ogoh artists have also become more creative and innovative in their choice of subject matter. Classic ogoh-ogoh are designed to resemble specific evil spirits and demons, but nowadays, the ogoh-ogoh design have expanded in taking more modern form or to resemble people that is in the news due to some scandal. The pre-Nyepi exorcism ceremonies concludes with the ogoh-ogoh being borne back to the banjar temples where they were made, to be burned in bonfires, though nowadays a few ogoh-ogoh are given a brief extension of life to remain at the banjar temples for a few weeks. After the ogoh-ogoh have gone up in smoke, it is time to return home to clean house and also to prepare food in advance for the next day. At 6 am, Bali’s Day of Silence begins. For the second time, Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali is also participating in creating an ogoh-ogoh and will be joining the parade on 12th March 2013, at 5 pm starting from front lobby area. The Ogoh-ogoh Inn - Team Wayan Dina Utama, Bellboy. “It is matter of habit and matter of the prestige. It feels so weird when we don’t create Ogoh-ogoh,” said Dina. For him and Balinese youngsters, “When it was banned few years ago, it was like extinguishing our creativity and enthusiasm,” Dina continued. Dina and the other members of his local community (Banjar) started to raise fund from the companies located in his Banjar territory. A simple ogoh-ogoh will cost them IDR 2.500.000-3.000.000. Of course, the money which has been collected from those companies is not enough. However, similar to other Banjars, he still has money saving from the members’ regular contributions. “We are tired but also fun. We work together until late at night while laughing or chatting,” said Dina closing the conversation.
