ctober holds a special place in my heart for a number of reasons. In addition to my birthday, this month marks the six year anniversary of my first visit to Hippocrates Health Institute. It was during that initial visit that my passion for all HHI does to educate people around the world, with its genuinely attainable message of hope for a healthier, happier future, ignited. This issue is packed with stories that will enlighten you to live well on a deeply meaningful level. What may come as a shock to some is that wellness is not all about the physical body but about the body as a whole; mind, body and spirit. Should any of these three areas be lacking, we simply do not thrive. Optimum living occurs once balance within the entire person is achieved. You’ll read about the powerful role of forgiveness as this wonderful issue is packed with mentally and spiritually provoking articles to teach us to operate out of a place of love and acceptance rather than fear and rejection. The thought provoking article “Sorry Isn’t Enough” explains the valuable difference between being sorry and forgiveness. In “The Psychology of Healing” we learn how our ability to sort through life experiences, forgive, and let go, greatly influences our ability to heal. As usual, there’s plenty of exciting activities going on at HHI this fall. orgiveness Most of us carry boulders in our hearts and minds representing unresolved issues. As time passes, we learn to endure these obstacles by lowering the bar for our own expectations and dreams. Imagine how much energy and discord these blockages render throughout life. Unfortunately, learning to adapt to this state often dwindles our ability to know that they are present. We each process events, encounters and situations in our own unique way. For one, being exposed to a shocking amount of stress does not dent their optimism. For another, a feather landing in the wrong place may activate is not a right or wrong or good or bad in this, there is just on problem.� Forgiveness is one of the most powerful tools that we possess. It frees us from the burden of blemished memories and allows our heart and soul to soar into the stratosphere of compassion. This progressive act moves the darkest thoughts and brings light to the blind parts of self. All healing, for all concerns, begins with forgiveness. First, we should forgive ourselves for harboring such nonsensical rhetorical gibberish. Next, if we perceive that somebody did us wrong, we must HEALTH elevate ourselves to truly see that they did not mean harm; it was all they were capable of. IN TES RA Freeing the boundary between ourselves and others illuminates the magnificence of contact and figuratively plugs us in to the rhythmic universe of goodness. Each day, we should direct our focus on processing and releasing all sadness. Before sleep at night, review any concerns or gnawing negative memories you have from the day. Commit to RA Y letting go or working out the problem before moving into the ethereal world of conY TIN G SIXT scious sleep. There is no doubt that you will enhance your energy, expand your joy and benefit from a sound rest. On the other hand, when we allow this emotional and mental debris to mount into a monster that seems untenable, we are smothered below the weight of sadness. Just think, with one quick change of mind, you can open up the watershed and allow the contaminating hurts to leave you. Each and every person we have been fortunate enough to observe here at HHI brought about their own recovery as they taught us forgiveness is the most basic and significant way. Resolving issues that have no place in a healthy person is the truly magnificent part of healing. Some of you struggle since childhood because you were taught not to let go and express yourself. It is never too late! And like a bird flying off from the highest peak, you will gain a new vista of a life of strength, stability and possibilities. Do not be fearful to let go of your sadness as letting go will allow your true persona to rise. Your entire body and mind is exhausted from holding this weight, drop it and allow it to be a memory not an enemy. As you gracefully move with authenticity in the direction of true liberation, the process of release and forgiveness will become second nature. This, we know, can become part of your repertoire of well-being. This, we know, is the most significant aspect in recovery and this, you will learn best friend you have ever found.

t the beginning of 2010, I was diagnosed with a very aggressive breast cancer (HER2+) which I quickly proceeded to address through surgery, chemo and radiation. My doctor informed me that 75 percent of patients with my particular type of cancer have a repeating occurrence within the first three years. I politely and decidedly told my doctor that reoccurrence was not going to happen with me. In trying to equip myself to win my battle with cancer, before ever even visiting Hippocrates Health Institute (HHI), I purchased all of Brian and Anna Maria Clement’s books as well as the series of 12 DVDs of informative classes. I earnestly invested myself in learning a new way to be well as I studied and incorporated their wise and healthful practices into my life. Immediately following my traditional cancer treatment protocol, I booked a flight for my first visit to HHI. That initial visit changed my life completely! Prior to my devastating cancer diagnosis, I hadn’t exactly been what one would describe as a “healthy” person since I have rather unfortunate genetics regarding my heart and circulation. My parents each died of heart disease and I’ve lost two sisters in their early forties due to heart disease. My brother had heart surgery at the age of 42 and ten years ago my cardiologist told me that I was probably going to have a heart attack within the next five years. As my cardiologist witnesses my ever improving heart and circulation he continues to be surprised at how my style of life has had such an incredibly positive impact on my overall wellness! The Hippocrates Lifestyle™ has tremendously improved my immune system. I have not only reversed the aggressive cancer and kept reoccurrence at bay, but I’ve also effectively addressed my troubled heart and circulation. After returning to HHI yearly since my first visit and receiving incomparable help from Brian, Anna Maria and Tom Fisher, I came to

the conclusion that I needed to start spreading this healthy lifestyle message in effort to help others, especially those with cancer. Last year, I became a Hippocrates Health Educator and, through that experience, created a project for patients with cancer. Currently, I’m writing my first book in a series, From Cancer to Life: A Deep Journey Through Spirituality and Healing, where I share my experience beginning from when I found out I was sick all the way through to the positive impact that HHI has had on my life. This first book will be sold on Amazon beginning in December 2016! The next book from this series called, From Cancer to Life, will come out soon. The second book will be a guide, not only for people with cancer, but for all those who want to regain or improve their wellness through living a healthy lifestyle.

ll too often we use the word “sorry” to diffuse the immediate occurrence. Unfortunately, most of the time that we utter this word it is disingenuous, becoming systematically robotic. When somebody pushes back, we purge with the “s” word. What this achieves is nothing good and only adds fuel to the deeply suppressed, unconquered, issues from the past. These hostile memories raise their ugly head on an on-going basis until we are ready and willing to dismiss them by genuinely acknowledging their teaching. All of us, myself included, often brush things aside rather than taking the time to address them straight on. Time and again we recycle this pattern and, quite often, refuse to resolve it. This is not a cyclical process that is there to annoy you, but a brilliant teaching begging you to learn. Respecting the possibilities that this lesson will bring by embracing the event, either comfortably or uncomfortably, certainly enriches your conscious reserves, fueling a smoother future. Forgiveness is the grown-up in the room that requires thought and demands respect. Being

and abandonment from a brother who looked up to him. Dead silence stilled the room; tears came to his eyes and he said “I’m also sad and sick.” Proposing that we have a meeting together, he let go and said he would love it. Together, they went through the Hippocrates, Life Transformation Program and, on a daily basis, it was clear to see that their unwarranted estrangement had literally rendered both men emotionally and physically ill. People tend to linger in the memories of the past since they fear the future. Their reduced perception is due to the closing of their hearts via perceived burdens. Tai chi was born as

wood. Soon, I learned how to use an axe and a manual saw and it often took all of my might to heat my abode. One day, as I was talking with a local telling how I had to saw wood for hours each day, he asked if I had ever used a chainsaw. Fibbing, I said, “Yes!” He handed me one and off I went. What a revelation I had the following day when it only took one hour, rather than four, to knock down the old, dead trees. Two weeks later, I expressed how happy I was for his generosity and concern and shared that I had cut my work down by three quarters. He suggested that I must have enough wood for all the homes in this valley and I replied, no, just enough for mine! He asked how I was using the saw and when I explained, he asked if I knew that you need to sharpen the blade and put oil on the saw? Seemingly, he saw right through me and realized this chainsaw was a new experience for me. My perception was I had gone from four hours to one hour which was a great improvement and far less laborious. If I had only been open to ask him how to use the chainsaw, my hour of work could have been achieved in only 5 minutes.

Relevant to this is the fact that forgiving is one of the most genuine gifts you can share with someone. Years ago, I received a call from a man who spoke about his younger brother that he had not talked to in 10 years. Inquiring why there was this discourse, he shared that when the brothers had been working together, the younger brother had cheated him one day, then he abruptly said, “But I love him and want to help him because he is now sick!” I asked if his brother knew that he cared so much and he said, “No, I do not want to talk to him.” Changing the conversation, I finally came around to proposing that maybe his illness stemmed from a broken heart

a martial art for wars of yonder years. Until recently, soldiers would adorn themselves with heavy metal armor and systematically, in a line, rapidly run toward their foes in an open field. Inevitably, the weight of this protection combined with the laborious effort the soldiers underwent often caused them to fall. The Tai chi warriors realized that if they moved rapidly out of the way of these soldiers that they would not have physical contact and the warrior would not only fall, but eventually, become exhausted and give up. This little story may help you in understanding why letting go is much more powerful than fighting. The ultimate shield is to succumb to the humbleness of forgiveness. Living in Oregon in the seventies in a small cabin about two miles from another person, I needed to heat my home with

I’ll always remember him looking at me, smiling and saying, “I forgive you for fibbing, but you’ll have to forgive yourself for wanting to do more work than you should have!” Needless to say, once I let go, I was able, willing and ready to learn. When pretending to be something that you are not, it always prevents you from being the best you. Forgiveness is not only something that has to do with your emotional state, this genuine act of compassion can reduce body burdens, spiritual anchors and unhappy lives. The burning, heartfelt passion of release is the magnificent bell that rings diminishing emptiness. When one lets go, they can be filled. When one is filled, they become whole. very October we raise awareness for breast cancer. We honor the survivors, encourage the fighters and mourn those that have lost the battle. This is the month of pink banners and ribbons, but there is nothing pink and pretty about this disease that tears apart families and communities. The sad reality is that breast cancer rates are rising. In order to effectively raise awareness, we all need to know the facts and the projected numbers for 2016. Current data from the National Cancer Institute Surveillance and Epidemiology Program:

• Combine the noodle ingredients in a large bowl. • Using a blender, add all sauce ingredients except the raw organic almond butter. • Gradually incorporate the almond butter to the sauce ingredients while blending on a low setting. • Add the sauce to the vegetables and kelp noodles and toss. rom 1900 to around 1960, the average life expectancy in the USA rose from about 50 years of age to 70. Since 1960, in economically advanced nations, the average life expectancy rose to nearly 80. While that rise has been greatly impacted by a certain “militancy� of modern medicine, namely its effective killing and avoidance of infections, perhaps surprising to much of the population, it has not necessarily been effective in treating chronic illnesses. You see, rising life expectancy statistics are not necessarily related to the best treatment of chronic illnesses. For example, in the twentieth century, the US infant mortality rate dropped by nearly 80 percent. But when we average in the loss of a life at its inception with the loss of a senior life, this throws off the overall calculation because at least two years of our life expectancy increase has been due to saving lives at or near birth. Additional factors influencing longevity also have little to do with how well we treat adult chronic illnesses, such as: fewer car accidents, safer work places, and reduction of cigarette smoking. A study published by Angus Deaton, a 2015 Nobel Prize laureate, indicates that overall mortality, for at least the past decade and a half, has actually been increasing for middle-aged white Americans. Rising alcohol and drug abuse, including prescription opioids, and suicide account for a significant portion of that decadeand-a-half increase. B adulterate their food supply with GMOs and foods grown with chemical synthetics, one has to consider what the chronic illness impact might be? Could a weaker health constitution lead to more Americans turning to drugs, legal and illegal, as well as alcohol and suicide? At the same time, the levels of chronic illnesses have been rising. Multiple studies show that at least half of American adults suffer from a chronic illness. Furthermore, incidences of chronic illness have been increasing in segments of the population through diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, asthma and so on. For example: in a single generation, cancer rates increased 22 percent for white men and 56 percent for white women. If we judge the level of chronic illness by how many adult Americans regularly take prescription drugs, the count of those who are chronically ill jumps to 60 percent. It rises even higher if we adopt a more stringent definition of hypertension, inclusive of individuals suffering from pre-hypertension, meaning those with blood pressure readings between 120/80 and 139/89. A stunning 60 percent of the US adult population is at least

hypertensive. When we add those who are chronically ill in other ways to the 60 percent of hypertensive-ill Americans, the total figure rises to an average of two-thirds to three-quarters of all US adults! Seniors 65 and over show an astounding 90 percent occurrence of being chronically ill. These alarming numbers reflect the monumental and rarely admitted, ineffectiveness of using chemical drugs, surgery and radiation to treat us over our extended lives. The existence of such an abysmal situation was reinforced in my mind when partaking in a 15K road race, the Utica Boilermaker - one of the largest such races in the US with more than 11,000 runners. It offered a sufficient gauge, if indirectly, of our overall health predicament. For example, only about one percent of the participants were 65 or older. While younger runners saw virtually no drop off between each successive 5-year age category, those aged 60-64 saw a 50 percent drop. For example, male runners between the ages of 55-59, numbered 500. Those 60-64 plummeted to 275 and further nosedived to 127 for the next age category of runners between the ages of 65-69. There

hile having one major health problem such as diabetes, heart disease or stroke can increase your risk for an early death, new research warns that the risk of dying prematurely goes up significantly if you have more than one of these conditions. Investigators determined that someone with one of those conditions faces double the risk of early death compared to people who have no such cardio/metabolic problems. oday, farms produce twenty percent more food than the entire global population of 7.5 billion people require. In countries with the highest standard of living, like the United States, forty percent of food is wasted by non-consumption while more people than ever are overweight, obese and morbidly obese. Our children suffer from this emerging crisis more than we do. Frightening global trends reveal that people are eating emotionally, sparked by their stressful lifestyle. High-speed living combined with fast-food choices are a lethal combination for both individual and societal health. When taken to the extreme, disorders like anorexia and bulimia arise. Eighty-five percent of the people suffering these maladies (5 million in the US alone) endured some form of psychological concern during childhood with the most common being anxiety, social phobia and post-traumatic stress. Internationally, the ratio is a shocking five women to one male suffering from these acute disorders. The future wellness of society looks grim due to the multinational food companies’ greed and lack of compassion. These ruthless companies have poured chemically latent genetically modified, high-sugar, low-nutrition and synthetic, opiate enriched products into the marketplace. There are a plethora of reasons for weight gain. Eating foods with little nutrients that are high in fat and sugar, a lack of exercise, stress and the absence of healthy fats, all combine to put on pounds. Stress factors such as the American workaholic culture— where fifty-five percent of

workers do not take vacations— is a pinnacle example of how we literally run ourselves into the ground. Our reptilian brain (first evolving 500 million years ago) primarily works in encouraging reproduction fight or flight response and, or complete shutdown, producing individuals in our high-speed societies that perpetually run their bodies under high intensity stress. This single factor is a major increase in weight gain. Over-and under-eating, fastfood consumption and absence of movement and exercise, pile up added unhealthy weight. In the U.K, weight problems were investigated, researched and published in the British Journal of Medicine, exposing that the main culprit is genetically modified fructose consumption contained in junk foods, especially soda. In the United States more than 1/3 of the adult population is obese (more than 5% morbidly). In the UK, more than ¼ of the adults is obese (2% morbidly). Children that are obese in both nations border around 20%. This data comes from the World Obesity Organization. Under normal conditions, when an infant is born their first and foremost food is mother’s milk. Their small bodies are, in great part, brown fat, which is supported and nurtured by the cholesterol from the mother. Finding the best fitting bra can be a daunting task. Not only do women want a bra that is functional, they want a bra that is comfortable, looks good and provides their body with the best care. All women’s body types are unique and require a different style for proper fit and comfort. Below are twelve tips to finding the best bra.

Look for a bra that supports your breasts without being too restrictive. Restrictive bras can stagnate the lymphatic system preventing it from being able to detoxify properly. If the lymph system accumulates excess waste it can be very detrimental to a woman’s health. Wearing a bra that is less restrictive can also help to strengthen your breast muscles and ligaments. When breasts are regularly being held up and supported by a restrictive bra this can cause the ligaments and muscles to atrophy, thus increasing breasts to sag even more over time.

Refrain from wearing bras that have underwires. Underwires are usually made of metal with a plastic coating. The wires push on the lymph nodes, breast tissue and meridians of the body that correlate to specific organs such as the liver, gallbladder and stomach. These organs can be affected over time through pressure on specific acupressure points. The pressure on these points along with the metal wire can also impede our natural flow of energy in the body. Additionally, this metal acts as an antenna to attract harmful electromagnetic frequencies.

If you have larger breasts, find a bra that has wider shoulder straps which help provide more support. This will help your overall structural alignment and take pressure off of your shoulders.

Find a bra that is not tight around the underbust area and does not dig into your back or sides. For larger busted women, look for a bra that has a wider back band. When you take your bra off at the end of the day, you should not have

indentations or red marks in the areas that your bra was covering. Being free of those red marks help ensure your lymph fluid is draining and is not being trapped when you’re wearing your bra.

If you have smaller breasts or feel comfortable not wearing a full bodied bra, choose to wear a bra that is strapless or perhaps go bra free and just wear a camisole. These styles are less likely to dig into sensitive areas and help support the natural movement of the breasts. Allowing your breasts to move freely along with your daily activities is what stimulates the lymphatic fluid in your system.

Only wear bras made from natural fibers which allow your skin to breathe. Synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic suffocate the skin and heat the body to abnormally

high temperatures. It is especially important that your body remains at a regulated temperature in the breast and vaginal areas. High heat in these areas can be a precursor to breast and cervical cancer as well as infertility.

The most optimal bras are those free from underwires and made from fabrics such as organic cotton. Choose bras made from organic fibers that are manufactured using organic practices to guarantee that they are free of harmful chemicals including: industrial bleaches, toxic dyes, and chemical finishing agents that can contribute to many ill health effects. These chemicals remain in the bra for the lifetime of the garment and do not wash out in the laundry. It is also important to note that breasts are mainly made up of fatty tissues and fat retains more toxins than normal tissues in our body.

Get rid of the padding. Opt for a bra that does not come with padding attached to the bra. If a bra has padding that is synthetic, remove the padding. Most padding is made from petroleum based chemicals and can often contain chemicals such as flame retardants, anti-bacterials and anti-mold chemicals, etc. Pads also hold more heat in the body, and discourages proper temperature regulation.

Look for a bra that contains less than 10% spandex, lycra, or elastane in its fabric content. Ideally, 100% organic cotton is the best option but you should also consider a bra that moves with your body and keeps its shape throughout the day. Therefore, a bra that contains at least 90% organic cotton with 10% or less of spandex, elastane or lycra is satisfactory. Anything more than 10% of these fibers can compromise the purity of the fabric and leads to a higher amount of synthetic fibers against the skin.

For sports and higher impact activities, choose a sports bra that fits loosely yet supports comfortably. Make sure the bra has wider straps so that they are not digging into your shoulders as you move. The wider straps will also help provide support for your back and posture. Exercise is a great way to support our lymph system as we must rely on movement and muscle contractions to move the fluid.

Find the right fitting bras that support you throughout the month. Women’s breast size can fluctuate during their menstrual cycle. Women can also retain more fluid during their monthly cycle and it is important to wear the proper fitting bra during this time. This is an important cycle when your body is working overtime to cleanse the system and eliminate toxins and impurities that you have accumulated throughout the month. Wearing the same size bra all throughout the month is not conducive in supporting this monthly internal cleansing if it is impeding your lymphatic system. It is important to shop for a bra during your monthly cycle to find a proper fitting bra that will assist your body’s system during this crucial time.

Whatever bra style you are wearing, if your bra becomes uncomfortable throughout the day, take it off or loosen it up as much as you can. If the bra is adjustable in the back, adjust it to the widest setting to give you more room. When you sit down, your ribs and back area widen making your bra fit tighter around your chest. Even if your bra seems to be non-restrictive, refrain from wearing a bra as often as you are able. When you get home from work, immediately take off your bra and definitely remove your bra when you go to sleep.

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF HEALING: AN INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR AND COUNSELOR, ANDY ROMAN

W

hile gathering informative articles exploring the topic of forgiveness for this issue of HOW, we were rightfully reminded of the valuable role forgiveness plays in our healing and wellness. In the followng conversation with Andy Roman, where we explore the psychology of healing, the undeniable connection between forgiveness and healing surfaces again. Andy has served as a mind/body psychotherapist at Hippocrates since 1990, practicing and teaching radical feeling-centered, body-focused awareness tools to help our guests and health educators. He conducts private sessions with individuals, couples and families and also facilitates our ongoing, successful Healing Circle Therapy and Support Group. While we’re all aware of the obvious benefits of physical healing, the integral value of psychological healing can easily be overlooked. Let’s begin our conversation with your thoughts on the importance of the psychological aspect of healing. I believe the psychological/emotional component is paramount in the healing process. Neither disease nor wellness happen in a vacuum; they happen in the context of our humanity. Therefore, unwinding the human dramas of pain as the person holds them in his body is central to unlocking the healing response.

In your practice of helping individuals on the path towards psychological healing, where do you begin when counseling someone in the difficult position of battling disease? I begin counseling, always, with what I refer to as a deep feeling approach. I’ve written a book, Deep Feeling, Deep Healing: the Heart Mind, and Soul of Getting Well, in which I describe my deep feeling approach in theory and technique very specifically. In a nutshell, I believe disease portrays a pantomimed version of something unconscious—either repressed (once known and now hidden), or still unknown (never known and still hidden) Consciousness is the cure. I base my work on a holistic triune brain model, which has strong implications for how the body/mind system processes, and often stores, pain and trauma in what I call “Pockets of Unconsciousness” within the body. These dark areas, often located in disease-related areas of the body, carry muscular contractive, selfprotective states that inhibit proper oxygen flow, cellular nitrification and waste removal. My job is to help remove those internalized hindrances by helping the person connect to feelings and bring in the light of love and reality. When a person has deep integrative experiences, those pockets disappear and the system normalizes hormonally, neuromuscularly and mentally.

I look specifically for the body response, the emotional response and the meaning response in how my client portrays his or her experience of the world. These elements clue me in to the nature of what carries the most importance and the most emotional charge and, therefore, the most likelihood of ushering in new awareness. My focus is to help a person become unrepressed and fully feeling. At that point, all the energy that went into staying unconscious can be liberated and the mind/body’s natural move towards health can proceed unhindered. Please share your thoughts on the following familiar topics surrounding the process of healing: 1. HEALING THE PAST… These are the main psychological hurdles that plague the psyche until they are resolved. Most present pain has its roots in past pain, from a time when we, as kids, didn’t have that many resources to deal with both difficult and not-sodifficult life events. Often, an adult person utilizes the same coping strategies based on the same conclusions they came to when they were little. Those childhood strategies must be replaced because the body needs to be updated. The person can then awaken to the present moment— not just intellectually, but viscerally and emotionally. That’s what updates the body and alters the body’s response. That’s what makes a body no longer a suitable host for disease. 2. I DON’T “DO” DISEASE TYPE THOUGHTS… I’ve seen denial or refusal to be sick work favorably, sometimes. I’ve also seen those same decisions as symptoms of selfdelusion which wasn’t in the best interest of the patient when considering the big picture. In my opinion, there’s no single formula here. 3. ATTITUDE… A roll-over-and-die attitude never helps. A healthy state of surrender is the best– that’s a balanced combination of “fight-like-hell” and “accept what I cannot change.” Again, there’s never a single formula, but rather guidelines with which

one navigates the changing waters of dealing with an illness. 4. VISUALIZATION… I’m convinced that inner visualization helps—especially when the visions come from within, as in dreams, for instance. To listen to soothing sounds and have someone else suggest images of waterfalls or something soothing, in my opinion, has limited benefits. But hey, if it helps, I’m for it. For those who have never let themselves relax and enjoy, it may be just be the thing. When I use inner imagery, I try to make it open-ended so the person comes up with their own soothing imagery. 5. THE POWER OF A HEALING ENVIRONMENT… The subtle influences of the environment, especially the social and emotional environment, often play a huge role in triggering stress responses, and therefore, they’re powerful. These same invisible factors of the environment can be rallied for the good. At Hippocrates, we demonstrate them in a positive way through the Healing Circle (support group) and the general pervading sense of unity and community at every stage of a guest’s stay. I

fter a grueling trial and hours of heated deliberation, the jury convicted 19-year-old William of kidnapping and murdering 14-year-old Jessica. The judge sentenced him to life imprisonment and made mandatory meetings with Jessica’s mother, at her request, as part of his punishment. Day after day, Jessica’s mother met with William in a private interrogation room in the prison. While chained to his seat, she yelled at him, cursed at him, cried in front of him. She made him look at photos of Jessica and told him many stories about her. At first, William was sullen, numb and non-responsive. He sat, arms limp, staring out with vacuous eyes. Months into these mandatory encounters, after an especially heart-rending expression of grief from Jessica’s mother, William cracked. At first his face twitched; the mask crumbled. He wailed, “I know what I did was horrible! I’m a monster! I deserve to die! I hate myself!” Tears flooded from his bloodshot eyes. From then on their meetings took a different turn. She saw his pain and his remorse. She saw a tiny seed of light emerging from the dark spiral of his life. She told the guard to unlock his shackles and William was

cooperative and compliant. Two months later she said, “William, I hate what you’ve done. Now that I see that you’re suffering and that you have a conscience about your crime, I can let go of you.” She never visited that prison again. When I saw the TV documentary about their story, I was moved. I took note that Jessica’s mother didn’t magically or “spiritually” jump to forgiveness. She crawled there and made William crawl, too. What Jessica’s mother did to William was also something she did for William. She helped him get in touch at a feeling level and find his humanity in the midst of the black hole of his life. That served as a loving act that released William while simultaneously freeing herself. Natural Rhythms of Forgiveness As a therapist, I see people wrestle with forgiveness, often wanting to skip normal human steps to get there. On one hand, they feel morally compelled to get there instantly, as if it’s simply the “right” thing to do. Every religious tradition espouses that forgiveness, as a quality of the Deity, becomes ours when we, as imperfect creatures, forgive others. To err is human, to forgive is divine. To forgive is to take a step towards divinity. Who wouldn’t want that?

The paradox is that when you skip steps to get to forgiveness, the journey often ends up taking longer. The process of forgiveness is organic and has natural rhythms. Rivers don’t flow in straight lines; they meander according to the terrain. In being wronged, in the wake of boundary violations or betrayal, the inner landscape can include feelings of loss, sadness, grief, hopelessness, despair, powerlessness, resentment and rage. Jessica’s mother knew all of these, and navigated their waters out loud. By neither ignoring or skipping any of the feelings, she let the process unfold organically and ensured a deeper finality at its conclusion. Feeling is the key. An organic path to forgiveness includes natural timing, a natural unfolding that simply can’t be rushed. When it comes to forgiveness, the readiness to let go is the real driver of the process. Jessica’s mother wasn’t ready to let go until she saw and felt certain signs in William that helped her do so. Confronting him, expressing the whole range of her human responses to him, quickened the process for her and for him. As hard as it was, and even if there was an aspect of revenge in her motives, it turned out to be a beneficial, wholesome and righteous thing to do.

Remorse Greases the Wheels of Forgiveness Of course it’s easier to forgive a wrong-doing when the perpetrator is sorry about it. Even in our criminal justice system, when a prisoner comes up for parole, the parole board looks for three things to determine release or not: 1. Admission of guilt, do you own that you did it? 2. Remorse, are you sorry you did it? 3. Rehabilitation, are you changed; can we be sure you won’t do it again? When any of these are not forthcoming, the parole board simply says that the prisoner is not ready to be released yet. Here’s my point: without ownership or remorse, the forgiveness process can, and maybe should, take longer. Self-Forgiveness The last chapter in this saga is self-forgiveness. Now that William has owned the crime and felt the remorse, is there redemption for him? Jessica’s mother never used the word “forgive” or “forgiveness” in her language to William. She said that in seeing his suffering and awakening conscience, she could let go of him. She was not to be the source of William’s redemption, for that source lives within him.

William was no longer denying or even wrestling with his guilt—he was admitting it. He wasn’t blaming others or playing victim in any way. He owned the crime and was doing his time. As the TV journalist followed him for the next months, William reported thinking of Jessica and her mother every day while getting in touch with deep levels of self-loathing about the horror of his actions. “My life was hell before prison, and life in prison was hell, too, but my hell went deep. I was in the hell of self-hate. I had done the unforgivable. I wanted to be punished—to kill my evil self. I wanted to die.” Years into his incarceration, William was introduced to a relative newcomer on the penitentiary circuit, the Prem Rawat Foundation’s Peace Education Program, a non-denominational outreach self-awareness curriculum bringing the message of self-responsibility, dignity, and inner peace to prisoners. He attended classes weekly, and eventually, “Something switched for me,” he recounted. “I heard the message that peace was within me, no matter what I had done, and that I could have it and deserved it. It took me a long time to let that in, but now I’ve accepted it. I am, and will always be, so sorry for what I’ve done, but my life isn’t over and it shouldn’t be. I can live the rest of my life in a way to make up, as best I can, for what I’ve done. I need peace, and I want it.” Jessica’s mother and William, independently, and because of each other, both found acceptance through letting go. Their path to redemption wasn’t neat and tidy; it was messy and very human. Ultimately, whether we get there smoothly or not, in the final act of letting go, we relax into the reality of love.

e know that 100% organic food is an essential foundation to help our families, especially our young people, in their journey towards a salutogenesis blueprint for health, pursuing the positive innate process of choosing factors supporting wellness of body, mind and spirit rather than those that cause disease. In our toxic world it is crucial to stay focused on using the most vibrant of organic foods to promote health, especially when government or corporate initiatives inadvertently (or purposefully) attack our wellbeing. For example, public health officials seek to mitigate exposure to the mosquitoborne Zika virus by exposing the total population of humans and other species, such as bees, to deadly pesticides known to cause harm and compromise health stability. Simply put, there is an imbalance and an urgent need for a correction of priorities. This is not news to most of our readers. You know that we, as a conscious community, are constantly wrestling with government officials and their corporate giant partners to protect food integrity, (in particular, the organic and 100% organic certifications) and set priorities that favor our health. The Hippocrates Health Institute (HHI) has been at the forefront for 40

decades as the standard-bearer and pioneer in providing a model foundation for the highest quality foods policy that truly makes a difference in healthy diets for all families in the USA and worldwide. In the United States, the passage and signing of the national labeling bill, S 764, regarding biotech or genetically engineered foods (GE or GMO) has been a milestone. Clearly this is not the bill that we wanted, but it has become law. This bill has extended the timing of food labeling and the POP Campaign continues to monitor its implementation and policy work to ensure transparency and to make certain your voices are heard. There is a lot that will happen before this bill is fully implemented and we will work to insure the government regulations developed are in the best interest of the public. Sadly, in Washington it has become commonplace for government agencies to take big actions when Congress is out of town, when the public is focused on others issues such as summer vacation, amidst flooding in Louisiana and during one of the most contentious elections in our lifetime. By placing all of these factors near the end of an administration — the staff presses hard to get as many policies in place before the

change of administrations takes place. This is exactly what has been happening with the USDA and FDA in the food and supplements arenas. Food Labeling: An excellent summary of S 764, the Food Labeling Bill, was presented in the last issue of Healing Our World magazine. The USDA is moving forward with assembling a “working group” of internal experts from across agencies. It opted to use a working group rather than form an advisory group because this allows the USDA to circumvent federal advisory committee laws on transparency, public notification and inclusion, and federal document production. The POP Campaign has confirmed that there will be no transcripts, archives, or requirements for public inclusion or notifications of meetings and agendas for this group. USDA offices that are going to participate in this process include the Agricultural Marketing Service, Food Safety and Inspection Service, Foreign Agricultural Service, Office of Budget and Program Analysis, Office of Communications, Office of Congressional Relations, Office of Tribal Relations, Office of the Chief Economist, Office of the General Counsel and Office of the Secretary. POP Campaign’s consultant, Beth

Clay, is keeping a close eye on this activity to give us direct feedback as the meetings unfold. GRAS Final Rule: The FDA, after nineteen years and enormous pressure from consumer groups, issued a proposed rule for public review on food additives, known as GRAS – Generally Recognized As Safe. A lengthy 300-page document describes a safety level for dietary supplements for humans and animals because of the increased use of chemicals in our foods and in the industry. The regulations seem to, for the first time, clearly acknowledge that dietary supplements are part of the food category and do not require the same approval standards established for synthetic drugs — the decade long, multi-billion-dollar approval process that even the big pharmaceutical companies complain about. Part of the agencies capitulation to the rule of law is that the GRAS process will continue to include a voluntary notification transparency process of reporting to the FDA the ingredients in supplements. This is an attractive option for products like probiotics because it is much less expensive to conduct and submit a GRAS notice than a New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) notice.

FDA Issues Revised Draft Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications: In August 2016, the FDA issued their latest iteration of the ‘nonbinding’ Guidance for Industry regarding New Dietary Ingredients (NDI). This is a key component for the full implementation of the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). The first failed draft was issued in 2011 and had many problems that showed that the FDA continues to try to force dietary supplements into a drug regulation model. According to the FDA’s 2012 analysis, there are about 55,600 dietary supplement products in the marketplace with about a ten percent (5,560) increase annually. There were about 4,000 products in the marketplace when DSHEA became law with the FDA acknowledging 750 NDI submissions. In 2011, Brian Clement submitted a six-page comment for the Congressional record stating: “The extensive NDI Guidance document goes too far, is based upon an incorrect premise, proposes protocols that will result in higher consumer prices for supplements and undermines the integrity of the supplement industry subsequently inhibiting access to healthy choices.” The FDA’s response: “Based on those comments and on meetings with industry and other stakeholders, we realized that the 2011 draft guidance contained gaps and unclear statements that were subject to confusion and misinterpretation. Therefore, we decided to clarify and better explain our thinking on some critical issues, in addition to explaining their public health significance, and to request additional comments on these issues before publishing

a final guidance.” One of the important conclusions and possible pitfalls in this document is the commitment by the FDA that they need to develop “an authoritative list of preDSHEA ingredients, based on independent and verifiable data.” The FDA acknowledges the data for this does not exist within its realm and suggests that industry would need to provide this information. Moreover, dietary supplement industry attorney Anthony Young has confirmed there is no “authoritative list of dietary ingredients that were marketed prior to Oct. 15, 1994.” This can be interpreted as the FDA asking the impossible of the industry. This latest iteration of the NDI Guidance document continues to include a suggestion that dietary ingredients that go through a ‘chemical alterations’ requirement, such as sprouting or fermentation will need to go through the NDI process. Industry has expressed concern about the FDA’s interpretation of synthetic ingredients and believes it will need to dialogue further with the agency. The FDA is holding the docket open for 60 days to receive public comment. If you have any comments, please direct them to the POP Campaign at bclay@ hawkinternational.us Biotech Food Production/ CRISPR technology: In September, the Advisory Committee on Biotechnology and Twenty-first Century Agriculture will meet to hammer out a draft report that is to include “a model for convening coexistence discussions at the local level as well as guidance for farmers around the production of identity-preserved crops.” This will begin to set standards for biotech food production as

well as the stage for CRISPR technology to gain momentum which is a process where a particular gene is deleted from a food, such as the “rot gene” in mushrooms, so that the food stays longer on shelves without going bad. We will continue to monitor this activity and keep you informed.
