ransformation is described as significant change. Unfortunately, even slight change seems nearly impossible for most people today.

This is why years ago, we chose to name the core program here at the Institute the Life TRANSFORMATION Program. All of us aspire to improve, to heal, and to truly live a life free of worry, sorrow, and fear. Yet, few are willing to submit to the total eradication of what is holding them back. Moderation always seems sensible, although it never achieves much. Tip-toeing around when you are expected to be fiercely running forward obviously does not achieve the desired outcome. How is it that some people possess the artist Madonna’s ability, where change seems effective and effortless, while most act like the Rock of Gibraltar, which hasn’t shifted in millennia? All of this can be daunting until you honestly evaluate your current circumstance and commit to leaving your burdens behind. Naysayers are going to mock you, your mind will try to talk you out of it, and the required energy to change will elude you.

Pushing strongly against the tide that resists progress will not work. Rather, establish what the obstacle is, place enormous pressure against it, and then release it so it falls to the wayside. Trying to chip away a little at a time will not result in success, either. Think about everything in your life that you have ever done that was exiting, exhilarating, and fulfilling. We can assure you that it was a result of an abrupt shift in attitude and energy. Reaching the goal was swift, agile, and courageous; not passive, slow, and ineffective.

Engage only in matters that you are committed to transforming. Do not minimize your progress by wasting time on incidental concerns that should be easily dealt with. Focus on the formidable nemeses that block your imagination, weaken your soul, and deplete your energy. Fundamentally, your entire life depends on you creating strong, persevering beliefs that are flexible enough to be altered when your consciousness expands. Gold medalists, those recovering from catastrophic disease as well as happy, contributory people all share the same mantra: heal thyself by honoring thyself. To honor oneself is to clear the blockages and disorders that limit your spirit. To be in touch with godliness is to be unshackled from your own sadness so you can be elated in your life’s passion. Live with a depth of sincerity that allows you to expansively project your desires and at the same time enhance yourself.

OF THE PROBLEM Root canals, heavy metals, and other dental treatments from the past may affect your health.

R

oot-canaled teeth are dead teeth!

Dentists are the only professionals in the medical field that would consider leaving a dead organ inside a patient’s body.

Even the best endodontics treatment using a dental microscope will find it impossible to achieve an environment free of bacteria and provide a completely sealed, bacteria-proof root canal filling. Accessory lateral channels and dentino-perio connection via the dentinal tubules are preserved.

Historically, gutta-percha, the material used to fill in the canals, was first introduced in 1847, and is still used today relatively unchanged.

A typical root canal involves the removal of the pulp tissue from the inside of the tooth, rendering this tooth lifeless. The dead tooth, once an organ with its own nerve and blood supply, remains as a dead pillar in the oral cavity.

It is inhabited by various anaerobic, pathogenic bacteria. These decompose the remaining organic tissue and secrete harmful metabolites (toxins). These pathogenic bacteria produce highly toxic and potentially carcinogenic hydrogen sulphide compounds as byproducts of their anaerobic metabolism.

These toxins can cause a number of systemic and organic diseases by creating an irreversible inhibition of the active center of many vital bodily enzymes.

Every time a patient chews, the bacteria and, most importantly, their toxins are released into the lymphatic system of the surrounding tissue. From here, they travel into the bloodstream (focal infection) and throughout the entire body.

A study by Richardson, et al, reported 75 different strains of bacteria found in rootcanaled teeth with apical osteitis. The most frequently found in and around the teeth

were Enterococcus faecalis, Capnocyphaga ochracea, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Leptotrichia buccalis, Gemella morbillorum, and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Four of these cited species attack the heart, three the nervous system, two the kidneys and the brain, and one affects the maxillary sinus.

Vital, healthy pulp and an intact immune system play primary roles in resisting these bacteria. Often, the chronic infection resulting from bacterial colonies develops into a chronic inflammation of the surrounding bone, which permanently activates the immune system.

Macrophages activated during the nonspecific immune response release inflammatory mediators, which circulate into the bloodstream. These encourage the development of chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases or worsen preexisting illnesses.

Dr. Thomas Rau successfully demonstrated a clear link between breast cancer and rootcanaled teeth.

When removing a root-canaled treated tooth, both pre- and post-immunological treatment should be carried out to enable the body to heal the wound, generate new, healthy bone, and prevent infection.

In biological dentistry, we focus on strengthening the immune system, on local sterilization, and on activating the bone healing with natural or intravenously administered substances in order to prevent side effects and negative concomitant symptoms. Antibiotics, when provided intravenously, do not show the negative effects as when taken orally, where patients may feel weak from diarrhea and vomiting due to valuable intestinal bacteria being destroyed.

As a rule, extraction is always carried out as gently as possible; gums and bones

must remain undamaged after the tooth has been removed. The ligament, an elastic fiber that holds the root, should be removed completely. If not removed, the brain will not realize that the tooth has been removed and the distribution of bone-growing factors will last until the ligament has been resorbed, a process which may take weeks.

Immediately, the site is infused by ozone, which has a bactericidal, fungicidal, and viricidal effect. This is a highly effective local sterilization tool available for use in dentistry, free from side effects.

In most cases, an immediate zirconia, metal-free dental implant is inserted into the clean site of the extraction, avoiding a secondary surgery and preventing any further bone loss.

This is accompanied with A-PRF (advanced platelet-rich fibrin), plasma components extracted from the patients’ blood, which are rich in growth factors and fibrin. Therapy using A-PRF promotes wound and bone healing, supports the immune response, and promotes a constant release of growth factors.

If you are looking to get your health back on track, part of the solution is living in a healthy indoor environment. Inside our homes and businesses, the life-giving indoor air we breathe has become increasingly contaminated with new strains of viruses, airborne chemicals, and toxic mold.

t the age of 12, I became a vegetarian and during my entire life I have been active, eaten a healthy diet, exercised, and stayed fit.

I was full of energy, motivated, ambitious, and always on the go.

I led a very busy life and had too much on my plate. I found little time to relax or take a vacation.

I did not pay too much attention to the overwhelming stress in my life. I raised two kids mostly by myself, had a stressful career in IT, and had gone back to school. There is no doubt that I spread myself too thin and, at some point, it all became too much. In my 30s, I developed a syndrome called adrenal fatigue where the level of cortisol (the stress hormone) is low and the

adrenal gland functions below the necessary level. Adrenal fatigue is accompanied by symptoms of extreme fatigue and exhaustion that do not improve with sleep.

I was treated by a doctor, but it wasn’t too helpful.

Regardless of the fact that I ate a vegetarian diet and was fit, the constant stress I experienced over a prolonged time eventually took a toll on my body. In my early 40s, I was totally burned out and was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS. This is a condition in which the heart rate is elevated significantly upon standing, and the blood

pressure is elevated along with symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, and chronic insomnia. I was bedridden for a long time and needed to use a wheelchair to get around. I was given seven different medications to treat the symptoms, and the medications not only did not help but exacerbated the situation.

Traditional medicine doctors led me to believe I would never be able to stand or walk again and would have to take these medications for the rest of my life. I thought, “No way! This is not what I consider a solution!”

Therefore, I decided to look for holistic medicine and consulted a naturopathic doctor. He advised me that the root cause of this syndrome was excessive stress and instructed me to stop all medications immediately. He prescribed both homeopathic remedies and herbal medicines, and within one week of following his treatment plan, I was able to stand for long periods and walk again.

Although I was on my way to recovery, I had not yet reached optimal health. I then discovered Hippocrates Health Institute and decided to take part in its three-week life transformation program. When

I arrived at the Institute, there was a feeling of community and the staff was welcoming and accommodating. They were also knowledgeable and supportive.

They addressed mind, body, and spirit to educate and treat the complete individual. There also

I recently wrote and published a book titled, “The (Formerly) Stressed Vegan— Ultimate Guide to Optimal

was a deep sharing and openness among the guests, with whom I made lifelong friends.

Transitioning from a vegetarian to the raw vegan diet was fairly easy for me. In addition to drinking wheatgrass and green juices, I participated in various cutting-edge therapies. The healing required a lot of patience, strength, and commitment, but I was beyond letting anything stand in the way of regaining my health.

I was ready to do whatever it took. The amazing results I attained after participating in the three-week program at the Institute certainly indicated that all the conventional medical doctors I had consulted were

I have a new infrared sauna that I’ve been using for two weeks. I started at 95 degrees for 10 minutes, and now I’m at 100 degrees for 20 minutes. I have no major health issues, but my blood pressure hovers around 144/86 and I’m a 68-year-old female who takes no medications. I’m looking for suggested daily usage time and temperature. Thanks for the opportunity to ask a question. I appreciate and admire Hippocrates.

With all the talk of gluten and how we need to rid our body from all forms, my holistic doctor still insists that wheatgrass should not be consumed. What is my argument that wheatgrass has no gluten? I know it has something to do with the sprouting. Does this mean I can eat any grain as long as it’s sprouted? Please clarify so I can show this to my doctor and also better understand it myself.

A quarter of a century ago, my colleague and friend, Dr. Coin, conducted a study on hyperthermia. He told me that it worked in the conquest of microbes and mutagens. What would be equally effective is spending time in an infrared sauna, daily. From that day forward, Anna Maria and I, no matter where we are in the world, spend a minimum of 20 minutes at a temperature up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93.33 Celsius) in a sauna or approximately 140 F (60 C) in an infrared sauna, most often after exercising. This is not only safe, but important, and I believe it is one of the many reasons I feel strong, healthy, and fit as I’m moving soon into my seventh decade.

The best way to understand the difference between the living plant of wheatgrass and that of the neutered, cooked powder of wheat is to go back and restudy basic biology.

When germinating this (staff of life), it breaks the gluten down to amino acids, rendering allergies irrelevant. This is the case with any grain, so as long as it is sprouted and then eaten raw there shouldn’t be any ill effects arising from any gluten concerns.

I would like to understand more of the energy theories and frequencies of the body. Do you recommend a book that will help me to understand more of my body as an energy?

One of the books I’ll soon complete, “Quantum Human Biology,” will explain the importance of energy and its related frequencies. Until then, you could reference “Infinite Mind” by Dr. Valerie Hunt or “The Body Electric” by Robert O. Becker. My colleague and friend, the late Valerie Hunt, measured healthy cells at 75 Hz. All disease reduces these frequencies, making your cells and body vulnerable to illness and premature aging. Living, organic, plant-based foods are the core providers of the energy that maintains the fuel for the cell. Here at Hippocrates, we have an energy medicine department, where we utilize state-of-the-art electromagnetic and laser therapies, helping to expeditiously rekindle the protective “glow-factor” in and around healthy cells.

My question is about scars and keloids. I keep on getting scars on any cuts and they turn into keloids with dark pigmentation around it. This never happened when I was younger; after the age of about 40, it started. I wonder if there are any deficiencies involved or is there any treatment available to remove them.

Scars, unfortunately, are quite common and actually block the meridians throughout the body from doing their essential work in maintaining superior health, so it is best if we can eliminate them. As we age, the body’s ability to prevent this tissue mutation lessens unless you maintain the highest-quality nutritional lifestyle. The use of systemic enzymes, deep and therapeutic body work, infrared saunas, and aerobic exercise all help dissolve these unwanted deviations.

I am working with a nutritionist and had extensive food allergy testing done. I am shocked to be allergic to blue and green algae. Everything I have ever known of blue-green algae is that we all need it and that products like E3Live and Chlorella, which I have been taking for years, are good for everyone. Should I not take these anymore since I have tested positive on an allergy test?

The good news is that there is allergy testing. The bad news is, if you repeated it every day over a five-day period, you would find different results consistently. The current technology is more of a biochemical snapshot of that moment rather than an historic indicator that can be trusted. For this very reason, I generally have steered away from using this tool and worked more so with people who are willing and able to catalogue the wide variety of food they ingest as well as the environment within which they reside. From this, we can concretely establish what they are reacting to in their fare as well as particulates within their surroundings, and regrettably, today’s invisible electromagnetic smog is the biggest culprit in this matter of reactive concerns. Algae is rarely considered an allergen. Over the past half-century, I can recall only three or four people who truly reacted poorly to this predigested power food.

A.C.: Robert J. McKee, horticulturalist, student of life, and respected victims’ trial attorney, spent time as a guest here at the Institute, where I interviewed him about his multifaceted and fascinating life. In his role as attorney, he represents injured people and the environment from the scandalous corporate poisoning machine. R.M.: The reason most people don’t hear about what I do is because cases are compelled by the offenders to be quietly, confidentially settled so that the nefarious corporate polluters do not expose themselves. In rare cases, we invite the media as a threat so the accused antics cannot be hidden. for pursuing this professionally is to place a “stranglehold” on the predators in hopes of awakening them.

Bees are essential to pollinate 80 percent of our food crop. We are losing bees worldwide to pesticides like glyphosate (Round Up systemic herbicide) and imidacloprids (synthetic insecticides), etc., and I am currently considering taking up the cause on bee extinction and the contamination of bee products by those systemic pesticides. In France, the farmers successfully forced the government to ban the most egregious poison.

How pesticides spread and amplify is through the leaves to the flower and accumulate in the pollen. Bees pick the pollen up, damaging their bodies and senses, causing a neurotoxin reaction like Alzheimer’s. This makes them confused, so much so that they often cannot find the hive.

If these affected bees do make it to the hive, they poison the queen, collapsing the colony.

Some beekeepers have lost 60,000 hives in one year.

The cascade effect on the environment is altering not only one species, but the entire planetary biome. As an example, here in Dade County, Florida, when we had a hurricane, the stress on our trees made them emit a hormonal compound that attracted beetles, whose larvae then ate them to death.

A.C.: Knowing that multinational food companies intentionally lace top-selling products with synthetic opiates to continue sales by addicted consumers is something out of a science-fiction futuristic novel.

R.M.: Knowing that the former head of the FDA, Dr. David A. Kessler, exposed this “hyper-palatability” corruption in his book, “The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite,” gave me a valid reason for why I was close to burnout and ready to retire. I had been consuming these noxious products my entire life. This realization made it an ideal target to pursue.

If I had only known about the central significance of this essential component, my work and life would have been enriched and enlarged. Can you imagine if I could present to juries what was happening to the very food values (or lack thereof) they are consuming?

One way corporations get around environmental pollution laws is to buy Energy Credits, by leasing land all over the earth to receive carbon credits for the future pollutants they will unleash into the environment. They can pollute so long as they pay to plant trees that will absorb their

Forests are so important for so many reasons. Older trees slow down, just like us, and don’t grow as much. Oddly enough, one of the most potent catchers of carbon that help stop the greenhouse effect are the trees and plants that grow the fastest. Among these are bamboo and hemp. Hemp also reconditions the soil and produces omega proteins, creates fibers, creates valuable cannabinoids (only one of which makes you high).

Your largest neurological system is the endocannabinoid. Mother’s milk calms the baby because of the cannabinoid she’s excreting. Our government made it illegal, not because it made you high, but because it protected Mellon, Carnegie, Dupont, etc., to protect their cotton interest from Mexican hemp competition. American colonists could not have lived here without growing hemp. The plants are superabsorbers of carbon and give us oxygen, withdrawing the carbon from the air and making a refurbished structure out of the soil. Carbon is in all of our own personal molecular chemistry structures.

If we can put our minds and money toward the pursuit of eradicating environmental degradation, we can support the growth of new forests and crops.

This process will not only enrich the soil, stopping desertification, but it will also create a new green economy that can potentially supersede that of the industrial model.

I have learned a lot here at Hippocrates about the roles of phytochemicals found in all edible plants. Learning about those phytochemicals, including cannabinoids in hemp, has made me further commit to my horticultural soul, to the significance of growing and spreading sustainable agriculture.

I visited a tribe in Northern Wisconsin.

They have the oldest cultivated forest in North America. Their chief, hundreds of years ago, said, “We will start to harvest the dead trees at this end of the forest and follow into the sun until we reach the other end, not cutting a single healthy tree.” They make furniture, housing, etc., without mass cutting, just dealing with dying trees, so they always have an active, growing, and sustainable forest. There are no clear cuts.

Trees protect us. I love them. Their seeds drop, sprout, and move daily to face the sun. They produce natural chemicals that are against others that compete for their space, and excrete compounds that attract pollinators, those who spread their seeds.

Most importantly, they provide shade and protect us from the fickle forces of nature.

You may want to watch the Discovery Channel series “The Living Forest.” I’m a shepherd of plant life. I call my seedlings my babies and I always want to make sure to

Chemical companies have to report known adverse effects to the EPA. They are supposed to find the LC50, lowest concentration where 50 percent of the subjects are harmed in some form, which they can fudge, manipulating the data, depending on what harm they are looking for and the duration and doses of the tests. Duration and concentration (a small dose over a long time or a big dose over a short time). Unfortunately, something is still being missed—what happens to the product in the environment, can it create other consequences, secondary and tertiary affects? You have to look at what they cause over time.

When you try to conduct research at a “reputable” university, it is impossible, since the chemical companies peddle influence in all entities, including the FDA and EPA. Money talks. These executives, who create poisonous products, have an attitude that “we don’t care if we kill, maim, or help propagate disease if it creates great income.”

You’d think we would have learned from

history. How many thousands of generations were never exposed to the disease-causing, manmade chemistry that we have to endure today? These inorganic molecules mutate our cells and wreak havoc with our immune system.

Life is always about choices. We have to find a way to create health, happiness, and healing for ourselves.

One example is a case I handled here in Florida with the phosphate industry in Bartow. The entire town, including the elementary school, had higher radiation Geiger counts than Bikini Atoll, where they tested nuclear bombs. Even Chernobyl may be a safer place to live since the numbers are lower.

Another example is that you have to suffer from symptoms of mesothelioma before you can claim compensation from the asbestos industry. What did our legislators do? They passed a law to prevent medical monitoring claims and precluded any lawsuit for exposure until you actually have the disease.

I worked on a case with other lawyers in

regard to an orchid plantation in Panama.

Scott’s Fertilizer product destroyed all the flowers for the largest cut-flower orchid grower in the world. Scott’s slow-release fertilizer was the cause of the 13 hectares of dead plants. Imagine what that may do to those of us who handle it in our gardens.

As you can see, governments and corporations care more for profits and less about human life. For this reason, we have to fight the good fight—apathy doesn’t work.

I had never heard the expression “living food” before; I thought all food was dead or I wouldn’t have eaten it. I never thought of that until I was at Hippocrates, and it now makes complete sense to me having experienced how positively my body reacts to it.

In conclusion, I am optimistic that we humans will find a way to turn the tide and begin embracing pro-body and pro-earth practices. Together, we all can make change occur, via knowledge, commitment, conviction, and love.

y name is Ronn Schuman and I am honored to work as the general manager at Hippocrates Health Institute.

I want to talk to you about my personal experiences and background that led me to join the leadership at this beautiful Institute, where I have enjoyed a life-altering transformation.

My wife, Amanda, and I are both trained and licensed medical professionals.

Amanda is a registered nurse, and I

was trained as a Navy medic and am a registered respiratory therapist.  Amanda and I met in 1980 while working together in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at St. Mary’s Hospital in West Palm Beach. We both love caring for children and actually became acquainted with each other in the hospital maternity delivery room. Back then, doctors handed the newborns to us at birth, and it was our job to help stabilize them. Words cannot describe the joy we had in being able to

help hundreds of newborn babies every month. There is nothing like the miracle of life!

Amanda continued to practice as a registered nurse until she retired in early 2008 due to a health issue. I continued with my career in health care, wellness, and executive management.

I spent the next 30 years creating and managing many different health-carerelated companies in the area of health care, operations, compliance, billing, and

all the wellness centers. We had a pleasant conversation that ended by me asking what her timeline was to make a hiring decision. The young woman responded by saying, “When we find the right person.” I jokingly told her, “No need to look any further as you’ve already found him,” and then politely ended the call.

After I hung up, I spoke to Amanda and said, “I just got a phone call from a wellness center in West Palm Beach that I’ve never heard of, and they

I want to reiterate that neither of us had ever seen anything like Hippocrates before, while we were part of traditional medicine for the past 30 years as healers.

It is also important to note that neither of us was familiar with the raw vegan lifestyle. Amanda and I were raised on a South Florida and

from my previous work and lifestyle and decided that since the food was a benefit to all staff, I would try this new cuisine.

You have to remember that I was raised on a lifestyle of hot dogs, deli sandwiches, chicken parmesan and many other cooked meals. Therefore, the idea of eating raw vegetables every day was not high on my list of foods I wanted to eat!

During my first few months at Hippocrates, I also decided to add some other health-

Life was great for us as we have been together for over 38 years. We raised two beautiful sons who now reside in Portland, Oregon.

Our youngest son is 29 and a vegan chef, and our older son is 36 and a senior computer engineer.

I had just completed a five-year project, working in the substance abuse disorder market helping others with their addictions, and reopened my private consulting practice in late 2017. During that time, I was accepting new clients and one Thursday night, I received a telephone call from a human resource representative from Hippocrates about a job opening.

I distinctly remember the call because when the representative identified herself, I didn’t understand the name “Hippocrates.” In retrospect, I wondered who this was as I had worked in this area of Florida for more than 30 years and thought I knew

are looking for a GM.” We searched on Google and were taken back by the beautiful pictures of the Institute. I was impressed by how many wellness services were offered at Hippocrates.

I contacted the human resource representative again and set up a meeting. Over the next month, my wife and I visited the campus and met directors Brian and Anna Maria Clement, along with members of the management staff, as I interviewed for this key leadership role. Amanda and I were truly moved by the heartfelt weekly guest graduations and tours of the campus.

The guest testimonials were genuine and convinced us the energy we sensed was something very special. I remember the moment that convinced me I really wanted to be part of the Hippocrates team: to quote a guest as he graduated, “When I got here I thought it was a bit pricy and now that I’ve finished my

New York Jewish traditional lifestyle. As most of you may know, this included a diet of bread, seafood, meats, dairy, and poultry, to say the least.

However, all of that was soon to change!

At the end of January 2018, I accepted the offer to work at Hippocrates Health Institute and was excited about the challenges and commitment of living up to the legacy that preceded me as the new general manager.

During that month, I started working full time at the Institute. I was overweight

related changes to my life.

Since the campus was over 50 acres, I walked instead of driving a golf cart.

My journey—life transformation—began as I was now eating raw organic veggies along with the green juices. As most of you know, but I did not then, when you start to eat healthier, your cravings for caffeine, sugar, and carbs disappear. Moreover, I started going home at night no longer hungry, which, of course, was upsetting my wife, Amanda, as she was still cooking the traditional

meals that we had been eating together for the past 30 years.

That, mixed with my detox, was quite an ordeal, but I was determined to make this work.

After a month or so, Amanda started to buy raw vegan and vegan meatless products as well and she

started to feel better. After six months of working at Hippocrates, we both were no longer eating any meat and were living a vegan lifestyle.

Some of the immediate benefits we noted were weight loss and a sense of calmness.

In addition, my wife, a type 2

diabetic, no longer was having high blood sugar levels, and my high blood pressure had returned to normal.

It has now been over a year and I have lost more than 40 pounds and have not had to take any aspirin or Motrin.

I have also stopped my high

blood pressure medications and statins. My doctor verified my bloodwork: my cardiac profile has completely returned to normal limits, which hasn’t happened in over 20 years!

Every day as I walk the Hippocrates property, greeting and helping guests from around the world and supporting hundreds of my colleagues, I am grateful for Ann Wigmore, Brian and Anna Maria, and others dedicating their lives to this work.

The guests continually tell me there is no other place like this in the world.

I understand now what the energy I originally felt was, as until I went through my own transformation, I really could not grasp this renewing gift of life.

My role, or better said, the “gift,” is that all of us at Hippocrates Health Institute are there to help guide others to get in touch with their mind, body, and spirit. As Hippocrates wrote thousands of years ago, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

nce we make the decision to step on the path to better health, we open our eyes to new opportunities and ideas.

Before adopting those new ideas, we often read, study and experiment. Please allow me to offer you a new, healthy idea you may have never considered—donating blood.

There is medical proof that donating blood benefits your health. The first step in donating is a mini-health checkup of your blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and iron count. This small check-up has, in many

instances, saved the blood donor’s life by revealing a health condition of which they were unaware.

In addition, there have been many studies that show that men and post-menopausal women, who donate blood at least three times a year, actually cut their risk of heart attack by 60 percent. Donating blood triggers the body to generate new red cells more quickly to replace those taken.

Why? Because there is never enough blood on hand. Many donors only respond when there is an urgent call for donations or when there is a disaster.

Contrary to most thinking, disasters do not immediately require large amounts of blood for the injured because the injured will be given donated blood already on the shelf that has already undergone testing to establish its purity and safety.

But disasters do need donors who respond quickly to give blood which can be tested and processed to replace what was immediately used at the disaster. Your reward is the joyous satisfaction of knowing you have just saved a preemie’s life, an accident victim, a surgical patient or the victim in a terrorist attack.

The Okeechobee Blood

Roundup volunteer workers invite you to come see the beauty and leisure of Okeechobee while saving lives at their 14th annual event, from 9am to 5pm Nov. 23-24. This small town of only about 5,000 in a county of less than 50,000 has been putting on this drive for the past 13 years.

These volunteers, young and old, have no corporate sponsorship but rely on the generosity of the community’s businesses and citizens who help make it a drive like no other, where hundreds of prizes are donated to encourage donor attendance. The Roundup has received local, state, national and international awards from Florida’s blood bank, One Blood, which draws the blood at The Roundup.

s a certified personal trainer, I frequently field questions about health and fitness. I am passionate about my profession, so I listen to anyone who is serious about making a change. When it comes to inquiries, I have noticed a definite trend. Most people want nutritional advice, fat spot reduction tips, and long-term strategies for weight-loss success.

As I was leaving work recently after a particularly long day, a colleague literally ran after me to ask a question.

He wanted to know what the best “fat burning” foods are. My response—you are smarter than that.

I went on to explain that while some foods have been shown to have fat-burning qualities, we must first take a look at his current nutrition plan to 42

understand why he feels he needs these foods in the first place.

Most people follow what is known as a Standard American Diet, or SAD. Individuals opt for convenience food over what is healthy. They eat processed meals, snacks, and even drink manufactured beverages.

Instead of following a whole foods vegan diet, they introduce chemicals and acidic animal protein into their bodies then wonder why they struggle to lose weight. No magic food is going to reverse the damage of a SAD way of life, especially because some of these foods are loaded with sugar, which has been shown to have addictive qualities.

With so many new diet trends like the latest Keto fad, it’s no wonder people are confused. They

willingly throw their bodies into an unnatural state of ketosis by eating copious amounts of animal protein in an unsustainable weight loss attempt, fail, and gain all the weight back, plus more. They then move on to the next fad and so on.

For anyone who asks for diet advice, my answer is almost always the same. Nutritionally, you cannot go wrong with a high raw vegan diet. If you are getting in all of your nutrients and limiting exposure to toxic food, you likely will not need “fat burning foods” because you will not be overweight in the first place.

When your body is in a peaceful state and getting all of the proteins, vitamins and minerals it needs, inflammation disappears and your body thanks you by letting go of the excess pounds.

Here’s another scenario I often encounter with clients, especially women. They want to slim down particular parts of their bodies. They point to their midsections, thighs, or under their arms and ask how to get rid of excess fat in these areas. Usually, they do not like my answer.

The truth is that you cannot choose where fat comes off your body. Instead, you have to decrease your overall body fat percentage and eventually, your body will let go of fat from those stubborn areas. While unfair, the place you gain weight first is usually the area that lets go of fat last. While that is unfortunate, it does not mean you are doomed to always have a thick waistline or under arm jiggle.

You need to have patience in the process and trust that you will eventually get the result you desire with consistency and

determination. That means pushing on when the scale plateaus.

Lastly, I address the time factor, or what I call the “how long” question. People want to know when they will start seeing results. Will it take a week, a month, or a year? Again, they probably do not like my response, which is it takes as long as it takes.

Instead of setting weight loss deadlines, like a wedding, class reunion, or beach trip, I tell people to stop focusing on the calendar and start formulating long-term goals.

Just like you do not get “fat” overnight, you will not lose weight in a finite amount of time just because you want to. Instead of getting frustrated, I try to help clients see the big picture. This is where visualization comes in to play. Rather than telling yourself you will always be overweight and unhealthy, shift your mindset to a more positive frequency. Tell yourself you are healthy and strong. Visualize effortlessly walking up a flight of stairs or running down the street or buying a smaller clothing size. Your body hears everything that your mind says, so be kind to yourself.

You must be patient when you want to give up the most.

Well-meaning friends and family members will tell you that you are fine the way you are.

Block out the noise and focus on you.

You have big plans for yourself and try not to forget that.

Remember, your health is not a fast fix. It is a lifelong commitment. With some guidance and changes, you, too, can reach your optimal potential.

You must be patient when you want to give up the most.

t seems that cannabidiol (CBD) is everywhere in the media these days. Whether in edibles, oils or soft gels, everyone from professional golfers to National Football League players to your average consumer are reaching for CBD to deal with stress, provide pain relief, fight inflammation, or enhance sleep benefits.

While health claims abound about CBD, the scientific research to back them up has only just begun and we are still unlocking the mysteries about these exciting natural compounds.

With everyone clamoring for this hempderived compound, it’s a great time to try CBD and see if it’s right for you. Before you do, though, we want to help you navigate this new world of CBD products by reviewing a few important considerations to help you make informed choices—and better reach your health goals.

First off, in case you’re wondering, CBD is NOT marijuana. Rather, it’s a naturally occurring compound, and its oil form—the basis for most CBD products—is traditionally extracted from hemp flowers. While it is possible to consume CBD in capsules as dried, crushed flower parts of the hemp plant, using it in an extracted oil form is a far superior approach for bio-availability and bio-efficacy.

Also, the hemp-flower-derived CBD oil isn’t psychoactive as it contains less than 0.3 percent THC, so it won’t get you high.

CBD is known to work within the body’s endocannabinoid system, a network of neurotransmitters throughout the body.

Their role is known to modulate and regulate appetite, immune system functions, 46

and pain management as a part of the neuroimmune system.

Plant-based CBD (exogenous cannabinoid) molecules can act within our endocannabinoid system, augmenting and replacing our sometimes-deficient native endocannabinoid neurotransmitters. In extreme deficiencies, as with epilepsy, dramatic effects have been witnessed. Normally, CBD consumers report less anxiety, better sleep, and less pain.

These are indeed valuable benefits, especially if CBD is full spectrum in nature and consumed in formats that are appropriate for the condition being addressed. For example, it’s not uncommon now for people to reach for a CBD soft gel for a headache or menstrual cramps instead of traditional over-the-counter medication. Not only can CBD be as effective in the correct dose, but it’s also non-toxic to the liver and overall body.

It must be pointed out however, that while CBD offers an exciting new range of health improvement possibilities, it is not a panacea. For example, recent research found evidence for CBD’s sustained anxiety-calming effects, but the sleep benefits were much less sustainable.

Interestingly, while CBD has yet to be classified as an adaptogen, it definitely meets the definition requirements for this healthrestoring class of plant molecules, since it is non-toxic, stress-reducing, and has an overall balancing effect on your anatomy.

Adaptogens are known to bring balance to the body’s cortisol system, supporting healthy adrenal function and offering enhanced immune function, better sleep, and improved

cognition and mood. Adaptogens do not force the body into any particular direction but instead assist the body’s own balancing and healing mechanisms. In other words, adaptogens are utilized by the human body’s intrinsic ability to select the molecules it needs to bring balance to its various systems to heal itself.

Almost every cell in the human body has a receptor for cortisol, the body’s stress hormone. While cortisol is essential for life, continuous high levels of cortisol become toxic, leading to many chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sexual dysfunction, digestive issues, weight gain, and more.

Adaptogens work by restoring a healthy balance to the body’s cortisol system, a key part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the body’s central stress response system that is closely intertwined with the endocrine system and central nervous system.

As time passes, this abnormal state becomes comfortable and we institutionalize that abnormality. This base standard literally becomes social norm and completely accepted nonsense.

How is it that with all of the access we have to knowledge, we have chosen the lowest common denominator and even created a façade that it is truth? There is only one

explanation for this fiasco phenomenon and that is the almost universal lack of core values that people possess today. Wanting to belong, without a contribution to offer, entices us to accept and embrace modern dogma that has little or nothing to do with important pillars of certainty.

Although it is essential for all of us to share, commune, and relate, we never should arrive at the party without a gift.

I’ve heard that happiness is a really important ingredient of healing. Can I just turn it on like a light switch, or how can I make myself happy?

Couldn’t you ask something big instead? Only kidding. This is a good and important question, maybe the most important one of all. If happiness is the antidote to stress, and I think it is, then you’re right, finding and living in happiness, this is important, especially in healing. Science has verified that stress is a killer; it makes tumors grow, keeps us from restorative sleep, and fuels our addictions.

Happiness is elusive when we look outside for it. Happiness is an inside job, meaning that the true source and wellspring of it comes from within our own being. It’s there, waiting for us to be still enough to touch it and join in with it.

Happiness is who we are; just like we were more naturally when we were kids.

As adults, we can make an effort to get in touch with this natural “joie de vivre,” or joy of living, again. A healthy and steady dose of exercise triggers a sense of well-being in most people. Loving relationships help. Meaningful work, too. Being of service. Growing a garden.

Is forgiveness a good tool to dump anger?

A Christian counselor once told me forgiveness is the only answer to anger. But I am not sure if it is a good idea. If I forgive, there is no justice; I continue to be a victim. Is it fair that those who hurt me—my parents, my ex-spouse, my siblings, and some of my past friends—be given a free ride?

A

I do believe that forgiveness is a good tool to get rid of anger at a deeper level.

However, it does not mean we give up our right to be angry when we are ill-treated and hurt, or that we should condone other people’s mistreatments. A Stanford University researcher, Dr. Fred Luskin, writes in his book “Forgive for Good,” that “forgiveness is the journey of moving from telling the story as a victim to telling the story as a hero. Forgiveness means that my story changes so that I, not the grievance, am in control.”

Instead of being a victim, you can choose to be a hero who has the power to forgive. It gets our power back.

By forgiving are we somehow allowing those who hurt us to get away with their actions?

Not at all; we are exercising

our power to liberate ourselves from the clutches of anger.

Buddha’s analogy of anger is also interesting: “An angry man is one who is holding on to a handful of burning coal thinking that he is going to throw it at somebody. But, my friend, who is really burning?”

Just like Luskin explains, the beneficiary of forgiveness is you, not the offender. It is a way of taking back your power, not giving away your power. It helps you to take responsibility for how you feel. It is about your healing, not about the offender’s healing. Forgiveness assists you to improve your physical and mental health.

Every time I have to deal with my mom, I feel put down by her. My brother, who is only two years older than me, also does the same. Because of this experience, I decline sometimes to go to family gatherings. I actually hate to go because I do not want to face them at all. Any suggestions?

A

I can understand that you feel anger toward your mother and older brother, whom you feel are putting you down frequently. It is only natural that you feel reluctant to attend family gatherings. In

this case, it is worth checking into your feeling of being judged or “put down” by them: are they trying to hurt you because it is their nature to hurt others around them, or are they behaving that way because they are victims of certain conditioning which they may be unaware of?

Even if the latter is the case, I do not mean to say that you should condone their behavior. Howev-

Looking at problems from a different perspective is part of the “reframing technique.”

Recently, I worked with someone who felt like a victim because of judging and “putting down” behaviors from her mother and sister. As she was able to regress back to age 4, when her family migrated

from a different country and a different culture to a conservative part of the United States, she was able to experience the behaviors of the “perpetrators” from a different perspective.

Her mother and the older sister had to go through an enormous number of struggles to adjust to the new environment, whereas her 4-year-old self was unaware of the challenges. When she started reframing their behaviors from the perspective that they were victims, rather than unkind people, she was able to forgive them unconditionally.

Her ability to forgive them changed her approach to them and their response to her. She is now happy to go to family get-togethers because she found a bond of love rather than the fear of being judged. Some of our guests have objected to the idea of forgiveness because they felt that forgiving someone could amount to denying that something painful happened to them. But, in fact, it is converting the pain to a gain— of being a hero rather than a victim. Some people are afraid they may be excusing the poor behavior of others if they forgive them, but often our ability to forgive others enables us to point out to the offenders more objectively what they did wrong. As forgiveness heals us from the hurt, we will be more effective in bringing the awareness of justice. It is love, not anger, which makes us a hero.

A

few years ago, I was involved in a lawsuit, and it triggered a growing, ongoing anxiety I just couldn’t shake. One day on my way to my lawyer’s office, I felt overwhelmed by negative thoughts. I crossed the lobby in a trance, pushed the button on the wall, and entered the elevator.

In the mirrored walls of the elevator, I could see my reflection.

I saw the furrow in my brow, and how serious I looked. For some reason, it made me laugh. In fact, I couldn’t stop laughing. I was so visibly riddled with worry that the only relief was laughter.

I laughed my way into my lawyer’s office and found humor (in the form of absurdity) in the rest of the proceedings. Even when I went in front of the judge, I felt calm. Eventually, I was acquitted.

I had laughed my way through a rough time. The worry I’d been plagued with before hadn’t helped a bit.

Since then, I have declared elevators “laugh zones,” whether they have mirrors or not; especially when I find myself enclosed in one with strangers. The awkwardness is no longer just that for me; it’s funny.

I think my humor in elevators is contagious. More than once, a fellow passenger has seen the grin on my face and asked me, “What’s so funny?” I just say, “Elevators,” and they laugh, too.

I’ve expanded my laugh zones to include all publicly placed mirrors, reflective store windows, and even the bathroom mirror in my own home. Seeing myself is funny. Life is funny, Even professionally, as a psychotherapist, I find myself using humor to relieve tension and to connect with people. By holding up a mirror (metaphorically, and yes, sometimes literally), I help my clients tune in to their own absurdity. Their laughter lubricates their growth and helps them face the rough spots with a sense of self-acceptance. Our difficulties do not define us.

There are only three rules for making a laugh zone:

Any place can be a laugh zone.

Once declared a laugh zone, that place can continue to be a source of joy.

Once my ex-wife and I found ourselves in a medieval church in Spain during a recital by chanting monks. We needed to leave before the service was over to catch a train. We got up quietly to tiptoe out and our sandals started squeaking loudly with every step.

At first, we felt awkward, as people cast disapproving looks our way, but then we got the giggles and happily squeaked our way to the exit. Outside, we burst into laughter, and we still laugh with the memory of it. (It’s worth mentioning that our sandals never squeaked before or since.)

You probably go into your office elevator or see the fire hydrant outside your apartment every day. If you can turn those things into laugh zones, you’ll have a positive memory to associate with them, even when you’re in a bad mood.

Small moments of joy like this make a huge difference over the span of a day, the span of a life.

You have to stop being a grown-up to enjoy them.

Kids don’t get the “seriousness” of the adult world. They maintain a playful relationship with everything. Kids play with food, they play at school, they play at church. Playfulness mirrors a built-in lightness of being that’s wholesome and healthy. It just takes practice. Creating these laugh zones fulfills our innate need to play.

Joy is infectious, contagious, and there’s no cure. We spread it every day. Embrace it!

LESSONS I LEARNED FROM HUGGING A WHALE Helping a sick mammal recover became an intimate and revealing experience. | S T O R Y : A N D Y R O M A N L MH C, MS, RN |

I

n June 2011, a pod of 12 pilot whales beached themselves on the shore of Key Largo, Florida. All of them were sick with respiratory infections and were simply too weak to stay afloat.

As you probably know, whales are mammals and need to surface regularly to breathe through their blowholes.

The Marine Mammal Conservancy put out a call for volunteers via Facebook. The volunteers would work four-hour shifts and hold these 20-foot, 7,000-pound whales upright in waist-deep water until they recovered. Day after day, around the clock, a team of dedicated helpers worked to save the lives of these beautiful creatures.

My then-wife, Lynne and I drove down to help out and our son came the next day. When it was our turn, we waded out to the group of people clustered around the enormous, debilitated mammals to relieve them. We were assigned to an adult female whale who had been named “300.�

I stood at her left pectoral fin area, one hand holding up her fin, and the other arm embracing her torso. Lynne stood vigil at the opposite end, near the tailfins. Our sick patient hardly moved as we held her, and her lungs rattled with each breath.

What are the odds of getting to hug a whale? If 300 weren’t so vulnerable, we would never have gotten that close. I think she felt our love and good intentions, which I’m sure helped her to relax.

I’ve come to understand that vulnerability is one of the main ingredients of intimacy, along with trust. We’re all in this together and we all share a beautiful fragility.

and occasionally her teeth, and yes, I was nervous at first. I could smell her strong breath as she blew out her blowhole and did my best to avoid the spray she spewed out with each exhalation. But more amazingly, because I was positioned at her front left end, I could feel her heartbeat! I hugged

300 for the entire four hours.

Her heart was beating against my side the whole time. It was intimate, magic, and revealing—and, by the way, for me, the longest hug of my life!

Here are five things I learned that day from hugging a whale:

As sick as she was and as bad as she must have felt, 300 wiggled with excitement when the conservancy ranger entered the water with a bowl of food! We could feel her joy. We laughed at how cute she was and rejoiced at her spark of perkiness.

Even in the darkest of times, there is something to be learned here. A positive mindset can help us overcome just about anything.

BEING OF SERVICE IS FULFILLING.

I won’t lie: holding up a 7,000-pound whale is not easy. But it was such an honor.

I was so pleased I took the opportunity to volunteer and so satisfied that I could help these animals in their time of need.

We not only bonded with the whales, but we bonded with each other, too. We connected with our innate sense of care and compassion and restored our faith in humanity. My then-wife, son and I were on a high and stayed in the flow of this kindness for days afterward! You’ve heard of tree-huggers, well, we’re whale-huggers!

REMEMBER TO PLAY.

One of the whales, a calf—perhaps only 6 feet long and 400 pounds—as sick and weak as she was, and even in the midst of family tragedy, played at every opportunity.

I heard more laughs coming from the humans holding her than from those holding the adults. Evidently, she was flapping her pectoral fins to knock her humans off balance—not to hurt them or because she was scared, but because she was mischievous! Her playfulness no doubt played an important role in her recovery.

COMMITMENT BEFORE COMFORT.

OK, honestly, I was relieved when my shift was over. Holding a large mammal upright to make sure it could keep breathing was psychologically taxing, physically demanding, and frankly, not that comfortable.

However, the goal was clear, and I felt the commitment. It was personal. I was called to help a living being who needed all the help I could give.

Time and discomfort came second. What a great feeling and lesson: I am bigger than my discomfort.

In the end, 300 survived and currently lives at a marine facility in Orlando. Because she had somehow suffered a spinal injury and could not live on her own at sea, she will be cared for in loving hands the rest of her life. The baby pilot whale also recovered fully and was released to join a pod in the wild.

THE WWII HERO

Raoul Wallenberg, a mild-mannered, apolitical upper-class Swede and an importer of luxury foods from Hungary, took action when he realized that the gruesome Nazi persecution of Jews had

stormed into Hungary. Instead of staying in his safety zone at home, he showed up in Budapest in 1944, and with the help of the U.S. War Refugee Board, he took on the task of saving thousands of Hungarian Jews from massacre.

By harboring them in Swedish safehouses and issuing official Swedish papers, he was able to evacuate them safely in small groups. In the face of

the direct order given by Adolf Hitler to kill the 65,000 Jews in the Budapest ghetto, Raoul raced against time to save them. His bravado, selflessness, and creativity are chronicled in the 1990 movie, “Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg,” starring Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård.

Raoul is credited with saving more than 100,000 lives.

TODAY’S HERO

Like her namesake, South Florida resident Sharon Leontine Wallenberg is making the world a better place. With 20 years’ experience as a representative for several non-governmental organizations affiliated with the United Nations, Sharon, also a vegan for almost 20 years, has established the Raoul Wallenberg Vegan International (or Vegan International).

The 501(c)3 not-for-profit charity is dedicated to educating governments and other non-governmental U.N. organizations about the benefits of the vegan lifestyle and how it can solve complex global problems.

When Vegan International is granted official nongovernmental organization (NGO) status by the United Nations, it will serve as a vegan lobbyist within the U.N. As part of the Economic and Social Council, Vegan International will partner with the U.N. System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to support and promote its global goals to keep the world’s people healthy.

Veganism perfectly aligns with and augments the global vision of the United Nations: optimal health and nutrition, sustainable use of resources, enlightened agriculture, poverty reduction, reduced carbon footprint, and compassion, peace, and justice for the planet and all its inhabitants.

“Vegan” is a word first coined by British activist Donald Watson (1910-2005). His aims were to introduce the moral reasons for eating a plant-based diet and expanding the vegetarian approach beyond its dietary focus to respecting and protecting animals by eliminating animal exploitation altogether.

“Vegan,” it turns out, provides natural solutions to complex global issues.

DIET AND DISEASE

Today’s global food system is not sufficient, leaving about 800 million people hungry, 2 billion micronutrient-deficient, more than 600 million people obese and 2 billion overweight. Something is wrong with this picture.

The WHO, the directing and coordinating authority for health within the U.N., is mandated to solve these problems. It provides leadership on global health matters, shapes the health research agenda, sets norms and standards, articulates evidence-based policy options, provides technical support to countries, and monitors and assesses health trends. Information about plantbased eating could radically influence global trends, and finally nourish the world’s population by sustainable means.

The non-vegan lifestyle is a major contributor to catastrophic health concerns, such as skyrocketing diabetes and heart disease, and potentially devastating antibiotic resistance. (The overuse of antibiotics in animals raised for food causes antibiotic resistance in people.)

Vegan International contributes to the WHO’s goals by providing documented information on the adverse correlation between animal-based diets and disease, and the misuse of antibiotics.

Vegan International disseminates at international levels, proof that the plant-based diet is the most affordable, healthful, and globally sustainable diet available.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

The U.N. FAO has food security for all at the heart of its efforts.

Its goals are: the eradication of hunger and malnutrition; the elimination of poverty; and the sustainable management and utilization of natural resources, including land, water, air, climate, and genetic resources, for the benefit of present and future generations.

Vegan International provides the FAO with vital education about the vegan diet, which uses far less resources of land and water than a conventional diet and shows a direct path toward achieving its lofty goals.

VEGANISM AND CLIMATE CHANGE

In April 2017, the UNSCN organized a panel on climate change and nutrition. The overwhelming conclusion of the panel projected reduced worldwide agricultural productivity as a result of global warming, punctuating the rising need to feed the world’s people more efficiently and economically, both goals furthered by veganism.

Current food production and consumption is responsible for 19-29 percent of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, up to 70 percent of the freshwater use, and more than 60 percent of the terrestrial biodiversity loss, with animal-based foods being major contributors to these environmental changes. If animal-based diets and highly processed food consumption continue, agricultural and food greenhouse gas emissions will rise by up to 80 percent by 2050.

All of these threats are eliminated by adopting a vegan lifestyle.

SHACKLING OF A WEED KILLER

From the last issue’s article, “A Weed Killer’s Escape Plan,” about the safety of Roundup with its primary ingredient glyphosate, the dragnet appears to be narrowing as the “false narratives” and “big bucks” have again lost in new court actions.

As mentioned in the last issue, page 61, following Dewayne “Lee” Johnson’s award of $78.5 million in damages, the Monsanto/ Bayer corporations are challenging the ruling through the appellate courts. A second plaintiff, Edwin Hardeman, proved Roundup was a significant factor in his developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma cancer. This decision was rendered at the federal court level and considered a “bellwether” ruling where the herbicide

was determined to be a “substantial factor” in causing the cancer. The award resulted in $80 million in damages.

On May 13, a third case concluded in Oakland, California, where a jury ruled in favor of Alva and Alberta Pilliod, who also suffered non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Reports stated that “the jury ordered the company to pay $2 billion in damages to the plaintiffs, and an additional $55 million in compensatory damages.” Whether or not these amounts are mitigated in a final ruling, signals are blaring at the German pharmaceutical corporation Bayer about its Monsanto product and subsequent gigantic liability. Appeals are moving forward expecting to land in the Supreme Court.

A NEW SIGNAL AT THE SUPREME COURT

In a recent surprising ruling, the Supreme Court signaled that party lines do not always hold on renderings. On May 13, an Apple iPhone position at the court was challenged in which the price Apple charged for iPhone apps resulted in a liberal interpretation of the pricing formula. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the recent President Trump appointee, voted with four liberals on the court, stating: “In the retail context, the price charged by a retailer to a consumer is often a result (at least in part) of the price charged by the manufacturer or supplier to the retailer, or of negotiations between the manufacturer or supplier and the retailer.” Politics as

usual may not translate to decisions as once were anticipated. Subsequently, the plaintiff ’s position on Roundup and glyphosate may have an outside chance at being upheld.

It is no mystery that deep D.C. political agendas are at play in the recent tariff tapestry against Chinese goods and imports. The Trump administration clearly wants American products to become the priority of choice. The long-game chess moves blink: Buy American; Produce American. One group on the “Cry Me A River” embargo eddy is the genetically engineered soy producers that, by all indications, may be facing significant economic losses and challenges. The question emerges: Might this signal a production shift away from soy production to other opportunities for some growers?

One opportunity and possible winner in this international bio-intersection is the organic industry. Because of higher prices for products from other countries, the increasingly renewed demand for organics may result in more U.S. farmland soil conversions to organic crops, where currently only 1 percent is dedicated to organics1. “Eat local” and “know your farmer” mantras, for products grown within 100 miles of where one lives, are leading the march. Increased organic and food-friendly shopping are resulting in a significant movement of success for farmers’ markets and local organic stores in the “food game,” with many victories for consumers as well as industry and labor.

The speed to market and the rapidly growing interests in hemp is becoming overwhelming, adding another huge demand to U.S. crop production capacities, including convertible land where GE corn and soy once were planted.

In July, the proposed cannabis national rule is scheduled to take effect. The Food and Drug Administration published notices for public hearings and submissions as part of the 2018 mandate under the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, or Farm Bill, regarding “Scientific Data and Information About Products Containing Cannabis or Cannabis-Derived Compounds.” Many new budding business interests are poised to take advantage of the medical value of cannabis, supported at multiple policy levels with scientific studies. Some of these include the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s study supporting pro-hemp policies.

Yet, the soaring demand for quality hemp products is beginning to outpace local production capacities. Industry is searching for high-quality “greenlighted foreign ports” and amicable policies. However, there are still classification restrictions not yet addressed fully at policy levels.

For example, CBD isolate with no THC still is running into a strict Schedule 1 license and import challenge, clogging the pipelines at the international stage and hampering this global sweet spot.
