Hilltops Celebrates NAIDOC Week The Hilltops region celebrated NAIDOC Week last Thursday at the Department of Human Services Office in Young, with a morning tea and art displays showing off the best of the local Wiradjuri people.

NAIDOC Week is nationally celebrated each year in recognition of the first Australians, and this year the event was held from Sunday July 2 to Sunday July 9.

An art display was set up at the Department of Human Services office last week with works from Wiradjuri people of the Hilltops region, including Cheryl Fensom, Roy Levett, and Enid Clarke.

Works of art from local schools, including Young North Public School, Young Public School, and Trinity Catholic Primary School in Murrumburrah, were also displayed.

Planned pesticide use by Council works crews and contractors until week ending Thursday 27th July 2017 will include the use of Round Up, Brush Off, Amitrol, Weedmaster, Dicamba, Grazon, Basta, Primo, MCPA and Broadstrike and Fusilade for herbicide control. Confidor for Aphid and Access for wild fruit tree control on: • All roads in Hilltops Council – Young, Boorowa and Harden area, Shire Parks, Ovals, Laneways and some town areas; • All Villages, Rest Areas and Reserves; and • Old General Cemetery.

In accordance with SSNPA’s Pesticide Notification Plan signs and flashing lights will be provided on vehicles applying pesticides, signs placed to inform the public where required, and escort warning vehicles will be used for the 2016 road shoulder program.

Drivers should exercise extreme caution when passing these vehicles.

The closure will be in operation between 7:00am to 4:00pm Monday 10th July to Friday 14th July for the purpose of scheduled water main renewal works.

Detour signage will be in place indicating an alternate route for north bound traffic via Dundas Street and Campbell Street and south bound traffic to be detoured along Boorowa Street to the east. Council reserves the right to amend the vehicle detours if necessary.

Councillor Briefing for Prospective Election Candidates For those thinking about putting their hand up as a candidate at the September local government election, Hilltops Council is hosting an information session on what’s involved in being a councillor. Council General Manager Anthony McMahon said the session – to be held at 5.30pm on Monday July 17 at Young Town Hall – was designed to help attendees gain a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of an elected member of council. Attendance is free and is open to anyone who is interested in nominating as a candidate at the election later this year. A representative from Local Government NSW (LGNSW) will present on a range of topics including the challenges of being a councillor, council meeting procedures and rules of debate, local government ‘jargon’ and managing conflicts of interest. Technology Boost for Local Schools Member for Goulburn Pru Goward has welcomed the $46 million investment of the NSW Government’s Connecting Country Schools program that will see wireless connectivity upgrades at Boorowa Central School, Rugby Public School and Rye Park Public School.

Work on this four-year program will begin at three other pilot schools, who will road test the solution and the process of implementation.

The pilot program will run until the end of September, and then will be rolled out to schools.

Once a school has been upgraded with the solution, they will be able to apply for additional funds from an innovation fund to maximise the use of the capability within their school and their community.

AGL Seniors Discount Gives Power to The People Member for Cootamundra Katrina Hodgkinson has welcomed the re-signing of a landmark deal between the NSW Government and one of Australia’s biggest energy suppliers to slash power costs for seniors. The government recently renewed a two-year deal with AGL that will see NSW Seniors Card holders in the Hilltops region receive up to 25 per cent off their gas and electricity usage charges from July 1.

AGL has offered Seniors Card members a 25 per cent guaranteed discount off electricity usage and 19 per cent guaranteed discount off gas usage charges on a two-year energy plan.

Council is on the lookout for community members who would like to take a lead role in helping shape Australia Day celebrations.

Council is in the process of formalising the Australia Day committees already in place in Young and Harden and in doing so, would like to include greater community representation.

Australia Day is an important date on our calendar; not only is it a great opportunity for the community to gather together for relaxed and family-friendly activities, but it’s also another chance for us to showcase what’s on offer in our region to potential summer-time travellers who are keen to explore their next destination.

Those interested in being considered for membership can find submission forms on Council’s website or collect a paper version from Council’s administration offices in Harden or Young. Submissions are required by midday on Monday July 17.

Council is also looking for more members for a special committee that’s been established to provide input on proposals, ideas and issues impacting young adults in the community.

The Youth Initiatives Committee was setup last year to ensure the interests of all age groups are fully considered and reflected in the work Council undertakes on behalf of the community.

Young adults and members of the community who engage with this age group on a regular basis are encouraged to be a part of the committee.

Last Saturday July 8, the Rotary Club of Boorowa celebrated its 57th Annual Changeover with a dinner at the Boorowa Recreation Club.

The BBC Awards will culminate in an evening dinner and fun presentation night on Saturday, July 29, 7pm at the Boorowa Ex-Services Club Auditorium.

Dog Show is Coming

The event will be open from 9am to 2pm on each day, and will see dogs in each category of breeds get judged and scored based on their standard of grooming for their particular breed.

“If people are considering buying a particular breed of dog, or are interested to find out which dogs might be best for their families, they can ask all of those questions and get answers,” she said.

“The exhibitors will be on hand to field questions, and will be more than happy to have a chat.”

I was born in Young, so that’s 37 years now!

You get to go on a holiday anywhere in the world. Where would you go and who would you take with you?

I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii and I’d have to take my 4 best friends, because if I left one behind I’d be in trouble.

What do you do in your spare time, or as a hobby?

I play hockey. I’m also a member of the Young Theatre Company and the Hilltops Choir. I can also be regularly found with a good book.

What is your drink of choice?

I don’t drink much, but either Corona or a good cider.

How do you usually start your day?

A cup of tea usually – my work day starts at 6am so I need it to help wake up!

What is your favourite food?

Anything Italian.

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?

Travel more!

What job would you be terrible at?

Computers or anything too scientific!

Who’s your go to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

Elder Abuse

The Australian Law Reform Commission’s Report Elder Abuse – A National Response was tabled on June 14, 2017, concluding a 15-month enquiry. It included 43 recommendations for law reform which aim to achieve a nationally consistent response to elder abuse.

It is intended that that the overall effect of the recommendations will be: • Improved responses to elder abuse in residential aged care including enhanced employment screening of care workers and greater scrutiny regarding the use of restrictive practices in aged care; •B uilding trust and confidence in enduring documents as important advanced planning tools; •P rotecting older people when ‘assets for care’ arrangements go wrong; •B anks and financial institutions protecting vulnerable customers from abuse; • Better succession planning across the selfmanaged superannuation sector; and • Adult safeguarding regimes protecting and supporting at-risk adults.

The Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) used two key principles to frame its recommendations: dignity and autonomy on the one hand and protection and safeguarding on the other. Protecting older people from abuse can be seen to support and enable their ability to live autonomous and dignified lives.

Whilst enduring powers of attorneys and enduring guardianships are important tools to allow people to choose who can make decisions for them they can also facilitate abuse by these decision makers. The ALRC has made recommendations relating to enduring documents including: adopting nationally consistent safeguards; giving tribunals the power to award compensation when duties are breached; and establishing a national on-line register.

The ARLC has also made recommendations regarding wills, particularly to protect older people from undue influence when making a will, and elder abuse within the aged care industry.

The Cherry Blossom Garden Club meeting/lunch. The Cherry Blossom Garden Club will be holding their July meeting and winter warmer lunch on Thursday 13th at C.W.A. rooms, with lunch time at 12pm for 12:30pm. New Landcare Group for Murringo Meeting. Murringo landholders and residents have embraced Young District Landcare’s Microbots in the Young District project, with bat roosting bones installed, wattles planted and an information evening held.

Other Murringo activities held include a Native Bee workshop and bird watching walks.

Now a number of residents have indicated an interest in establishing a local Landcare group.

Roman Rudnytsky and masterclass Internationally renowned concert pianist Roman Rudnytsky returns to the Young Regional School of Music Performance Room on July 20 at 7pm.

Roman has had an illustrious career spanning decades and has toured in over 95 countries.

He has spent many of his years as a university professor of music as well as being an artist in residence. Now retired from teaching, Roman continues to travel as a performer and educator in remote areas. He began performing at the tender age of seven and went on to study at the famed Julliard School of New York where he gained both his Bachelor and Masters of Music. Changes to the Sport of Bowls With a new committee at the helm of Women’s Bowls New South Wales, there are many new ideas and new ways of looking at the sport. Quote; ‘Well if you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you always got.’ This was from Daniel Gatt, new Chief Executive Officer of Women’s Bowls NSW. And he’s right. People don’t like change, but change is what will bring new life to the sport. And there have been many changes over the years.

Colour has come to bowls. Colour in the uniforms, colour in the bowls that we play with, colour in the flags that fly and many colours in the mufti outfits that people wear on social days now. The sport is so much more relaxed and yet the ethics and principles of the sport haven’t changed. Yes, there are rules, but those rules are for the benefit of the players and members of the Bowls Clubs, not just for the sake of having rules.

The sport of bowls is as old as a sport can get and things don’t last that long without there being something to them, something that draws people in and gives them an interest. You only have to look at a bowls magazine or watch the bowls show on TV to see how the sport is attracting younger members. Come on, have a go. Come and see what all the hype is about. You never know, you just might like it.

HILLTOPS REGION SPORT

This Week at the Boorowa Ex-Services Bowls Club Chris and Des Grimson Major Pairs Champions The Boorowa Ex-Services Bowls Club major pairs competition played over the weekend was won by the father and son pairing of Des and Chris Grimson. They have returned to the winners’ podium after being dethroned last year. They defeated the pairing of Gerard Dunn and John Dymock 22-17 in the final.

Results of the earlier rounds played on Saturday were: • Col Good and Glen Klose defeated Peter Watts and Patrick Beadman 27-18.

• The Grimson pairing defeated Daryl Murphy and John Crowe 20-12 • Nev Thurtell and Tony Beadman defeated Brett Stanford and Bill Luxford 22-15.

On Sunday Des and Chris defeated Neville and Tony 29-20, as well as Gerard Dunn and John Dymock in a very tight match which went to a sudden death after 21 ends, after it was locked up at 20 all.

In the sudden death end John and Gerard scored 2 shots to win the contest.

In the final between Des and Chris and John and Gerard scores were even until the 10th end when Des and Chris opened up a 6 shot lead and despite a fightback late in the match Des and Chis won the contest 22-17. Congratulations to them and good luck in the district competition.

The pairing of John Dymock and Gerard Dunn came about by accident because the Gerard’s normal partner Mick Tuckerman was thrown off his Japanese Quarterhorse on Friday while mustering cattle. Mick has sustained severe damage to his right shoulder. We all hope it doesn’t hurt too much Mick!

At last Thursday’s social bowls John Crowe and Jo Snelling won the day on 27 points, closely followed by Alan Morrisey on 25. Jo is playing very consistent bowls and she keeps the ladies’ flag flying each week.

With a heavy injury toll and player unavailability the Young Yabbies Rugby Union club advised ANU North Owls Rugby club that Young would be unable to field a second grade side resulting in a forfeit by the local side.

This afforded the Yabbies the opportunity to field a fresh first grade side that were gallant in a closely fought contest, going down to the Owls by a meagre conversion, 24-22, with both sides scoring 4 tries.

The game started well for Young with a bit of individual brilliance from fly-half Michael Stallard who chipped ahead, got a second kick on the ball then outpaced the cover to regather and score.

As a number of players were not available, the side needed to be reshuffled dramatically, forcing players to play in unfamiliar positions. This resulted in early mistakes and a lack of cohesion, allowing the ANU North side to dominate territory and finally score through their forward pack.

The Yabbies eventually got on top of their opponents, and continued to hammer away at the Uni defence and were rewarded when Michael Stallard scored his second try with a great run that saw him beat a number of defenders. Again, the conversion attempt missed.

With the clock ticking down the Young side lifted for one last effort and looked to be rewarded with a line-out near the ANU North line only to have the referee blow full time after the line-out was set. It was a heart breaking 2 point loss for the local side, 24-22 (M. Stallard 2, H.Williams 1, C. Randall 1 tries and M. Stallard 1 conv.)

Best and fairest points went to Michael Stallard, 3, Hagon Williams, 2 and Ben Simmons and Jack Everdell, 1 point each. The Players’ player was Stallard.

The Yabbies are at home this weekend against competition heavy weights Queanbeyan with games commencing at 1.30 and 3.00pm, so come along and provide some much needed support for the teams.

Playing Ditch Weight The cold conditions on Saturday discouraged many regular players and just twelve men were involved in Jackpot Bowls.

Mark Brownlie and Denis Rosen won the Penrose Funerals sponsored vouchers when they won their game by 14 shots.

Other winning teams were Grant Fuller and Russell Boyd (9 shots) and Albert Carter and Kevin Porter (8 shots).

The first round of the Zone 8 Pairs Championships was played at Wagga Rules Club on Saturday afternoon.

In very cold and wet conditions David Quigley and David Ward representing the South Western District lost 18–20 to Peter Forck and Gary Kern from Henty.

The winners of the championship were Shaun Gehringer and Lincoln Dooley from Narrandera.

There were fewer starters than usual on Thursday afternoon with 18 players on the green.

Geoff Hines had a successful day — he won a bottle of whisky donated by Stuart Freudenstein for having a resting toucher in the ditch and he teamed up with Stewart Taylor to win their game by the massive margin of 34 shots to take out the vouchers for the afternoon.

The numbers for Sunday morning were also down with just eight players taking part.

Don Close and Joe Hennock had the best score for the morning with 13 points.

Players with a Pennant grade of 5, 6 or 7 who are interested in representing the South Western District in the President’s Cup should make sure their details are put on the sheet on the notice board.

There will be men’s bowls as usual this week on Thursday and Saturday afternoons and mixed bowls on Sunday morning.

A number of teams have already entered for the Club Triples Championship and bowlers are reminded that entries will close on Saturday July 22.

Members who have not yet renewed their membership for 2017–18 are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

Members and visitors had an enjoyable evening on Saturday night listening to or dancing to the music played by Lock, Stock and Bingle and having a nice dinner at the bistro.
