BLANTYRE FARMS FINALIST IN NSW ENVIRONMENTAL CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD

B

lantyre Farms is one of twelve finalists in the running for the $5000 NSW Environmental Citizen of the Year award. They became finalists after their nomination as Young’s Environmental Citizen of the Year award on Australia Day for their sustainable approach to farming. They were nominated after the farm installed a biogas generator to capture the methane from pig manure. The methane is turned into electricity and removes carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. Owner Edwina Beveridge said, “The project is win win win, it reduces our emissions, makes renewable power and made economic sense.” “The whole team at Blantyre try really hard to do the best in our own little patch, doing our bit to preserve the environment, whether it is using food waste or making power from pig poo. Recognition for our efforts makes

the challenges, persistence and hard work all the more worthwhile. We are really proud to be recognised in our local community, we are really grateful to the Hilltops Council for providing this opportunity and excited about the possibility of recognition on a bigger stage.” Edwina says the farm has further plans, describing how the prize money would help, “Japanese pig farms use food waste differently to us, we would love to travel there, learn more, expand our minds and bring home new and exciting ideas to help preserve our environment. $5000 would go a long way to facilitate such a study trip.” The winner will be announced on June 5 by the Australia Day Council of NSW.

SHORT COURSE IN FIRST AID TO BE HELD AT YOUNG TAFE

TAFE NSW Young will be holding a short course on first aid on the 31st of May. The Statement of Attainment in Provide First Aid is an 18-hour course that equips participants with skills and knowledge to empower them to take control of an emergency situation. The course gives students the flexibility of doing 8 hours of work online before the day at the Young campus for practice and assessment. The interactive day equips students with skills in basic life support, casualty management, CPR and use of a defibrillator. TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Nursing and First Aid Cheryl Bradshaw said, “First aid is something you hope you never need but you never know when you will need it. It’s an amazing feeling to help save someone’s life and having these skills stops you from feeling helpless when you’re confronted by an emergency.” Ms Bradshaw said a first aid certificate was highly regarded by employers and was a prerequisite for some roles in industries like childcare, education, fitness and leisure, disability care, community services and health. “A mum did the course recently and a few weeks later was at a family gathering and a small child fell into the pool,” said Ms Bradshaw. “She was able to apply what she learned and resuscitate the child and now she’s made her whole family complete the course at TAFE NSW.” To find out more about studying a first aid short course or a course in semester two at TAFE NSW Young, phone 13 16 01 or visit www.tafensw.edu.au

From Hilltops Councillor RITA O’CONNOR

As a Councillor it is often difficult to get an insight into the work staff do. However, this month has been incredibly busy with budget and LEP work and I particularly want to thank and commend the staff for their enormous amount of work done. One of the community groups I have been involved in is the Hilltops Wellbeing Action Group (HWAG). This comprises many local health, education and wellness groups. Some of the issues being focused on include social and affordable housing and encouraging training of the Lifespan Program – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer). I would like to commend Hilltops Council

for implementing the QPR training across the organisation so that all staff will become trained. After a nomination process to become Workplace Wellness Champions, twenty employees were selected from all aspects of the work environment (indoor/ outdoor staff/different departments) to do training throughout the year, to help support not only other employees, but also the broader Hilltops community. A local drug action team program is being organised by HWAG to improve youth health outcomes and services for sexual health, mental health and drug and alcohol consumption. This program is being funded through the Alcohol and Drug Foundation and will be designed over the next twelve months.

In other parts of the community, the Harden Visitor Information Centre is close to opening. The hardworking Committee has done an excellent job on its completion. The Boorowa Community Garden plantings have commenced, and the gardens are progressing well. The Regional Health Summit organised by Local Government NSW was a well-supported regional initiative. Councillor Roles and I were privileged to attend the ALGWA (Australian Local Government Women’s Association) National Conference in Sydney to celebrate a hundred years of women in government. Hilltops Council is a busy, dynamic workplace and I am pleased to be part of it. Council Rita O’Connor

HARDEN GOLF CLUB NEWS Cassidy & Bates Round 1 Leaders The gents lined up this week to contest Round 1 of their annual 4BBB Championships brought by the sponsors Jamie Cantrill & Tom Darmody. Jamie is a current Country Club board member and with his wife Caron have just brought the newest addition to their family, a little girl, into the world. Congratulations from all. The 4BBB Championship in recent years has replaced the 4BBB Matchplay which was a great contest but for some, harder than Chinese arithmetic to figure and play to along with a normal 4BBB on the same day. The round 1 leaders have been at this caper for some time, so it’s no surprise that Darrell Cassidy and Robert Bates who had a great score of 47 points. Both gents had quite formidable individual scores also. Runners up on the day and only 1 shot back were Craig Filmer & Tam Kennedy who fired in a 46-point round. Craig & Tam headed up the ball comp with this score, then followed by Ron Page & Bernie Parker with 44 points and Michael Baldry & Rick Preston who snuck past a big contingent on 42 points in a countback. It’s a tough old game 4 Ball and it can see you as a hero this week or a zero next week. Anything could happen in round 2 this Saturday coming. Who will get the rub of the green? Or who will tell the biggest lies about their capers and how they got there. See you there to help make it happen. The Bendigo Bank Hole in One did not go off on Saturday, however the nearest the pin went to Ben Glover who shot one in to 2.7m. Normally a good range for the Club Champion to claim the birdie and the 3 points on the 10th, however a horseshoe throw out caught him off guard. Heycox Again Midweek... Now he is making a nuisance of himself. Greg Heycox just will not play happy in the

sandbox with all the other kiddies. Greg has jumped in and made it back to back in the midweek 12-hole, par 24 stableford point competition. Greg is a sneaky little bugger also, recording his wins with minimal under par rounds, this week a mere 25 points. Whilst a great round, it means he is only deducting his handicap by 1 to commence duties this week on 24 (hmmn… still too high but time will tell). 2nd this week went to David James (23 points) in another podium finish, whilst 3rd was shared between Bob Stevenson, Peter Steinke and David James again on 22 points. A lot larger field eventuated this week which is good to see with the late glorious Autumn weather. The random ball went to David James. New Players & Hi-Jinx at New Ladies Comp The Tuesday ladies fun for beginners is really gaining traction and results for the last 2 weeks have now been handed in for the public record. A big thanks to Marj Manwaring for her vision and support of this growing clan. In the previous week, the winner was Cathy Sanderson who shot a very impressive 54 for 9 holes, totalling 32 nett or 4 under her handicap and breaking her handicap by 3. Runner up was Jacqui Solah with a 60 for a 41 nett. This week saw some new starters including a face fresh to town. Deb De Graf is understood to be an accomplished cellist and was very excited with her win on 14 different instruments this week, recording a 71 for 49 nett in her first outing at Harden. Jacqui Solah (the perpetual bridesmaid) was yet again runner up. The girls set off in the fog for this round last week which has meant that as from next week, tee times for this group will be shifted to noon. To continue reading visit https://bit.ly/2WPQphv

FUNDING FOR YOUNG BOWLING CLUB The Young Bowling Club has received $107, 594 out of round 2 of the Stronger Country Communities Fund. The money is being used to replace lighting and shades. Young Bowling Club Secretary Cliff Traynor said the lighting will enable the club to save wear on the greens by sharing usage. “While the lights on our greens are relatively modern, the lights on Green 3 were extremely old and the quality of their lighting wasn’t so good, they weren’t bright enough,” he said. “The new lights will allow us to rotate our play so that we are not concentrating on just one or two greens and increasing wear on them.” Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke visited the Club this week to see how the money was making bowling more enjoyable. “The installation of new shades will also provide good protection from the sun, whether that be in summer or even on a bright autumn day and it’s fantastic to hear that the Club members will be setting up the shades themselves. That’s just the sort of hands-on community involvement which is so characteristic of the Cootamundra electorate.” Mr Traynor said the Club was being sensible with both finances and exposure to the sun. “The cost we were quoted to put the shades up when they are delivered was prohibitive, so we are doing it ourselves,” he said. “We play bowls all year round and in summertime the use of shades is regular. Even in the last few weeks when we’re not far from winter and had some warm-ish days, people are still using the shades. People are more conscious these days about not being out in the sun for extended periods.”
