ember for Cootamundra Steph Cooke has joined forces with Cootamundra electorate emergency services to urge the community to have a safe summer. Ms Cooke highlighted the messages of local emergency services with road safety, bushfire risks and proper precautions on our waterways all highlighted as key concerns when the temperatures soar. “Aussie summers are absolutely iconic so what we’re focused on is making sure people in the Cootamundra electorate take some simple steps to ensure their festive season is memorable for all the right reasons,” Ms Cooke said. Emergency services issued a number of timely warnings about the dangers that individuals may face this summer and some simple steps people can take to stay safe. “Whether you’re hitting the road to go and see loved ones this Christmas, or enjoying our beautiful beaches or rivers for a swim or boat ride, we want everyone to do so safely,” Ms Cooke said. “At the same time, we’re reminding people to make sure they’ve prepared their homes for the bushfire season and know what to do if they’re affected by floods or storms.” Ms Cooke also reiterated police warnings about the importance of being safe on the region’s roads as people travel around the

state to see friends and family over the festive period. “All motorists have a responsibility to obey the road rules. Police across the Cootamundra electorate will be out in force this summer to ensure the safety of drivers and their passengers,” Ms Cooke said. “Our emergency services from bush to beach and everyone in between do a tremendous job protecting lives, property and infrastructure across the state all year round, but we can all play our part in being prepared,” Ms Cooke added. Getting ready this summer includes five simple steps: • Know your risk - think about the area you live in and the types of disasters that could affect you; • Plan now for what you will do - sit down and talk with your family and plan for what you will do if a disaster affects your area; • Get your home ready - prepare your home by doing general home maintenance and checking your insurance; • Be aware - find out how to prepare and what to do if there is a disaster in your area; and, • Look out for each other - share information with your family, friends, neighbours and those who may need assistance.
