CONCERT SERIES

his concert series held every Friday at 12:30pm at the Young Library gives attendees the chance to experience performances from a wonderful variety of talented local musicians. The series commenced on July 7, 2017 and apart from a month’s break in January, they have had back to back concerts for the last 40 weeks. The biggest concert they have had was with an audience of 45 people. Most of the time they will have over 20 people in audience. They have built a loyal and appreciative audience and have found a wide variety of talent from the Hilltops region.

Even though there isn’t a lot of room within the Library space they are able to wheel back some of the book tubs and create a performance space which works very well for the concerts. The Library aims to keep introducing new initiatives regardless of space. The organisers try to have a spread of musical

styles such as classical, jazz, pop, country and western. They also have a range of performer age groups in the mix. The library concerts are unfunded and have no grant monies. The performers are unpaid and are very generous with their time and talents.

The Library staff and audience members really appreciate the musicians volunteering their time and talents.

“We have tremendous support from local performers and the segment has found a loyal audience who have made the concerts a regular spot on their weekly calendars,” said Library Manager Mrs Janice Ottey.

This Friday’s “ Take 5 on Friday” concert at Young Library will feature a choir from St Mary’s Year 2 classes. Its Free, everyone is welcome. Feel free to bring lunch, coffee and friends. From 12.30pm to 1pm.

PESTICIDE USE NOTIFICATION Planned pesticide use by Council works crews until week ending Thursday 21st June 2018 will include the use of Round Up, Brush Off, Amitrol, Weedmaster, Dicamba, Grazon, Basta, Primo, MCPA and Broadstrike and Fusilade for herbicide control. Confidor for Aphid and Access for wild fruit tree control on: • All roads in Hilltops Council – Young, Boorowa and Harden area, Shire Parks, Ovals, Laneways and. some town areas; • All Villages, Rest Areas and Reserves; and •R ural and Regional roads Naturalure Fruit Fly Bait will be used in the above areas to target the control of fruit fly.

In accordance with Hilltops Pesticide Notification Plan signs and flashing lights will be provided on vehicles applying pesticides, signs placed to inform the public where required, and escort warning vehicles will be used for the 2017 road shoulder program.

Drivers should exercise extreme caution when passing these vehicles.

BANGO WIND FARM PLANNING AGREEMENT AND EXPLANATORY NOTE Hilltops Council has negotiated a planning agreement with CWP Renewables in relation to the development of a wind farm at Bango. In accordance with the provisions of Section 7.5(1) of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 the draft planning agreement and explanatory note are placed on exhibition for public comment for a period of 28 days commencing on 24th May 2018.

The documents are available for viewing at each of Council’s administration building in Boorowa, Harden and Young and on Council’s website at www.hilltops. nsw.gov.au.

Submissions on the planning agreement may be made in writing to the General Manager, Hilltops Council up until 12 noon Thursday 21st June.

When making a submission you should be aware that details of the submission can be made publicly available as allowed by the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 BURRANGONG CREEK – PRELIMINARY PROJECT PLAN Council is proposing improvements to Burrangong Creek in four categories - Connectivity, Recreational, Environmental and Cultural. The $1.5 million funding for this project is from the Stronger Communities allocation.

In accordance with a Council resolution from the May 2018 Ordinary Meeting of Council, the Preliminary Project Plan will be on a 28-day Public Exhibition period from 24 May 2018 and concluding on 21 June 2018 to gain further feedback on the Plan.

THE LAMBING FLATS YOUNG BRANCH OF THE FELLOWSHIP OF AUSTRALIAN WRITERS The A.G.M. of the Lambing Flats Young Branch of the Fellowship of Australian Writers took place on May 14th. Re-elected as President was Ted Webber, Julie Avaloine as Secretary, Joan Dwyer is Treasurer and Perter Symes is Vice President, Andrea Robinson is Publicity Officer.

Member Valerie Parv has had more of her literary papers acquired by the State Library of NSW for their collection. Secretary Julie Avaloine has had a mystery golf story published. Member and poet Robyn Sykes had her second book of poetry launched recently.

Planning and organising is underway for a writing workshop and also for the Annual Cherry Festival Writing Competition. More details available later, or better still come and join the next meeting on Monday 18th June at the Young Services Club at 5-30 -7pm. You will be very welcome.

STARS OF YOUNG: DANCE FOR CANCER Stars of Young – Dance For Cancer is just around the corner! This inaugural fundraising event will definitely put the fun into fundraising when local “stars” are paired up with dance and music professionals for a night of entertainment. The gala event, being hosted at the Young Services Club on Friday 22nd June, sold out in record time! All funds raised from Stars of Young will help Cancer Council NSW fund vital cancer research, support services, prevention programs and advocacy campaigns. Cancer Council NSW is the only cancer charity that covers all areas of all cancers and is 97% community funded.

NOMINATE A LOCAL VOLUNTEER

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke is encouraging locals to nominate community members who volunteer their time for the 2018 Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program.

“Volunteers in Cootamundra are the backbone of our community and this program shows appreciation for their contributions,” Ms Cooke said.

“Volunteers make a difference and it is important that we applaud these efforts”.

In Parliament last week Ms Cooke formally acknowledged volunteers from The Harden Evening View Club, the Murrumbidgee and Lachlan SES Regions, Junee Community Power Group, Boomerang Bags Gundagai

and the Advance Ganmain Committee for their dedication and community spirit.

“Any of these groups are prime candidates for a Premier’s Recognition Award, all it takes is for someone to put their name in the mix,” Ms Cooke said.

The award program acknowledges the individual efforts of both adults and students, with each nominee receiving a certificate celebrating their individual contributions. To date, the program has recognised the hard work of more than 21,000 volunteers from across NSW. SING AUSTRALIA YOUNG

R

ecently the Sing Australia Young group attended a regional singing afternoon in Wagga Wagga. This was conducted by founder Colin Slater OAM. Much to the groups surprise and delight three of their members, Margaret Fathers conductor, Mary Tout, Leader, and Margaret Schutz long time member, and stand in conductor, all received the lifetime membership award for their loyalty and dedication to Sing Australia.

For a group to receive one award is wonderful, two is outstanding, but three in such a small group as Sing Australia, Young is an unbelievable achievement and also very exciting. They count a baker’s dozen in members of the group.

Four of the current members have been members since 2001, including their oldest vocalist at 87 years.

The group is always looking for new members to join in and sing with them.

They believe everyone has a voice, they don’t have auditions, they sing a lot of the old-time favourites and in doing so always have a lot of fun. They also sing at their respective retirement villages on a regular basis to the delight and appreciation of the residents.

The New South Wales Government under the leadership of Mike Baird merged the 3 Councils of Harden, Young and Boorowa on May 12, 2016. Over two years later the State Government continues to fail to fully fund the mergers they gave residents no option to oppose. Much of the cost still outstanding, revolves around the information technology system, apparently needed to bring the 3 former shires together. $2.65 million dollars is a lot of money, funding we don’t have.

Whilst we rejoice in the glitter and new toys in which the Stronger Country Communities Fund is providing, we must understand one thing. We now have to maintain all the new infrastructure and this costs money. Hilltops Council’s rates are currently set by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal, (IPART). The rate peg is 2.3%. The rate ‘freeze’ concludes in 2019/2020. There is little doubt whatsoever that rates will either go up to cover the costs of services or to bring the costs down, service levels will be lowered. The question is, will this meet community expectations? Will residents be happy to pay more for current services or improved services? or will they be happy to pay the same or less for less services? Council is required to undertake a review of the rate structure of the former Councils and determine a Hilltops Structure and have it in place by 2021.

The other major hurdle confronting the Hilltops area is the requirement to establish a new Local Environment Plan (LEP). I don’t for one minute believe that the current State Government is genuinely interested in seeing this area expand and grow with industry and housing. Otherwise the ridiculously arduous process of making a new LEP would be made far simpler.

A workshop presentation which lasted over 2 hours was held for Councillors last week by some big wigs from Wollongong. It has prompted more questions than answers. The former Harden Shire Council had already prepared a lot of work for a new LEP before the merger. It was their number 1 priority just a week in to the 2012 term. It will now take a minimum of 2 years to achieve any sort of useable LEP for the betterment of the Hilltops area. It will be the middle of 2020 at best when this may or may not happen. This time frame is far too long and communities will continue to suffer because of it. For Harden, 8 years after they started working hard on it. Hilltops residents have few options to expand residentially or commercially. This can then cause backyard businesses to spring up which aren’t compliant and have an unfair advantage over those who are compliant.

It’s time the State Government started looking after country people and the places they lived and helped fund their expansion and their future. If not, why do we have this level of Government?

he Murrumburrah Precinct Plan Community and Business Workshops were held last week, facilitated by the team from Sala 4D Landscaping. Their creative and interactive approach saw participants encouraged to identify what vision they had for the area.

The workshops were well attended with a good mix of the community represented.

There was an alignment among the community in their ideas for the precinct as well as what they valued and wanted to see in the plan with a high level of importance of having a lovely, high quality area which enables the community to participate in and enjoy a variety of activities. The precinct plan will involve the beautification of the creek to make it more of a feature of the town.

The community also expressed their desire to eventually have a way of connecting Harden to Murrumburrah via walking and bike paths.

According to local resident Michael Baldry the workshops were helpful and successful in their aims, “Through a collection of pictures on boards we were asked to prioritize which best represented what we wanted for Murrumburrah. The categories where broadly around, built design, function and landscape. They used the choices to identify trends of common goals. Some of the popular themes were, landscapes to interact, reflect and exercise. The importance of cultural and built heritage both indigenous and non- indigenous. WINS THE ANGUS SOCIETIES NOEL WILLIAMS SHIELD

T

he Noel Williams Shield and prize money is awarded each year to the school with the highest scoring Angus school steer in the Sydney Royal Easter Show School Steer competition.

The school steer section of the competition began in 1986 and the shield was first presented in 1994 as the PIBA Shield which was later renamed the Noel Williams Shield.

This year, the Noel Williams Shield for the second time was won by The Kings School, Parramatta. The winning steer (lot 303) was bred by Milong Angus Stud, Young NSW with a score of 89 points, it won a silver carcase award. The steer weighed 574 kilos liveweight and was purchased by Wingham Beef Exports.

History of the Noel Williams Shield In 1982 the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) started a competition for high schools where they could enter their stud steers in the RAS Steer Competition at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. From 1984 the late Noel Williams, the owner of the Black Mountain Angus Stud, Berry and his South Coast business partner, Bruce McIntosh together with the NSW State Committee of The Angus Society of Australia, and a number of other people including the late Norman Lethbridge started sourcing and delivering steers to NSW schools that were interested in working with the steers and preparing them for entry to this competition. Noel Williams for many years paid out of his own pocket the expenses incurred by the schools.

In 1986 the first stand alone RAS School Steer Competition was created. This was an initiative of Wendy and Des Stubbs who approached RAS Councilors Neville Russell, the late Bill Coglan, the late Dick Stone in 1986 to create the school competition. In the initial years the steers were housed in the Pig Pavilion at the Moore Park Showgrounds and students were accommodated in the Anzac Rifle Range army huts at Little Bay. Steers in those days were assembled at the schools or the Homebush Sale yards.

The Noel Williams Shield was created by the NSW State Committee of the Angus Society of Australia for the highest scoring Angus steer entered in the Schools Section of the RAS Steer and Carcase Competition.

The shield was named in his honor to recognise his dedication and commitment to the Schools Steer competition and his work for Youth in the agriculture industry.

According to the Secretary of the NSW State Committee of the Angus Society, Richard Buck “I first met Noel Williams in 1994 at the Sydney Show. He was an incredible person. His kindness and enthusiasm for youth and the support of the School Steer Competition will always be remembered.”

Schools who have previously won the shield include: Abbotsleigh, Barker College, Chevalier College, Downlands College Toowoomba, Dubbo High, Hunter Valley Grammar, Karabar High, Scone Grammar, Scone High, The Kings School, Knox Grammar, The Scots School, Xavier College.

To continue the memory of Noel Williams and his untold work for youth and the school steer competition, Reiland Angus Stud from Tumut and Gundagai have for many years kindly sponsored the shield with prize money. Next year where Angus will be the Feature Breed at the Sydney Royal Show, Reiland Angus Stud will increase the prize money to $500.

The AWEX EMI continued to break into new price territory, closing the week on 2027c - a weekly increase of 44c in AUD and 32c in USD terms (now on 1533c). A combination of the underlying forecast of low production, matched with the seasonal low point for available offerings and high demand, had buyers once again scrambling to achieve their purchasing schedules for the week.

From the 30,439 bales offered at auction this week, 97.7% cleared to the trade with record prices achieved in all of the merino MPG’s.

Merino Fleece attracted incredible buyer support adding between 40-80c across the range. Buyers seemingly ignoring low style, high VM and cotted/coloured discounts.

Merino Skirtings mirrored the fleece with rises measuring 40-80c, with keen attention on the <18 micron with low VM. Crossbreds posted a mixed result with the sub 28 MPG posting 25-55c rises whilst the 30-32 MPG’s struggling to maintain last week’s levels.

Cardings also had a mixed week across the selling centres with Sydney and Fremantle posting 21-25c rises respectively, conversely Melbourne lost 12c. We have a farm out at Monteagle, so we enjoy going out there and doing farm work or horse riding.

SW Farmers welcomes the visits to drought affected areas by the Premier and Minister for Primary Industries this week but believes the government’s response to the state’s worsening drought conditions must go beyond the appointment of a new drought coordinator.

NSW Farmers’ Rural Affairs Committee Chair, Sonia O’Keefe, says many farmers have been or are, actioning the strategies they have in place to manage the ongoing impacts of the hottest and driest April in 20 years, but it’s important politicians listen to farmers’ concerns.

“In Western NSW farmers are facing their fourth year of low or no rainfall. While well-intentioned, the appointment of a drought coordinator will not address the needs of farmers who have limited access to water or feed, and no rain. As the drought conditions worsen, farmers will be making hard decisions to manage their enterprises, families will be managing tightening budgets, and local suppliers will see falling trade”. Ms O’Keefe concluded.

PLAYING DITCH WEIGHT Twenty teams played in Young’s 16th Annual 2 Bowl Triples Tournament over the weekend. Conditions varied from sunny and pleasant to cold and cloudy.

After completing the six games the overall winners were Damien Miller, Peter Watts and David Quigley with 5 wins and a margin of 81 shots.

Mark Anderson, Peter Slater and Kevin Porter came second (4 wins +60). The composite Grenfell/Canberra side of Steve Galvin, John Joyce and David Hill finished third (4 wins +58) and fourth place went to Bevan Krause, Brian Krause and Bill Spletter from Temora (4 wins +36).

The Cootamundra Ex–Services team of Jim White, Rob Anderson and John Harriott were fifth (4 wins +26) and sixth place went to Albert Carter, David Donges and Cliff Traynor (4 wins + 12).

Many people contributed to the success of the tournament.

The very cold weather on Thursday kept player numbers down to 16.

Milan Brankovic and Harold Anderson were the winners for the afternoon with a winning margin of 15 shots.

Just six players took part in Sunday morning bowls with the winning team being Andrew Hutchison, Trevor Howell and Joe Hennock with 13 points.

There will be casual dress for games this weekend.

Jackpot Bowls will be played on Saturday afternoon with Sunday morning bowls as usual.

HARDEN GOLF CLUB NEWS

Scottish Weather – Scottish Winner Its almost winter and that is when the Highland Hibernians flourish, or so I am told. And so it was on Saturday with our resident Scotsman coming out to play. Boy, didn’t he play. Tam Kennedy has picked up our daily event, our A Grade Medal, the Guzzlers Mug, and no doubt some eclectic goodies along his journey on Saturday.

Our event was the Parker’s Smash Repairs June Monthly Medal and we thank Bernie, Mark and the crew for their generous support off Harden Golf. Mark even lent a hand presenting the trophies to our Medal Winners for the day.

As stated, Tam Kennedy has cleaned up the field with a round 6 better than his handicap for a 65 nett. This round has cleaned up next best by 2 shots on handicap, and put a serious dent into his handicap before his Sunday Pennant round in Young. Our B Grade Medallist is making a welter of it in his regular return to Saturday Golf, David James has recorded an impressive 67 nett to be 4 shots better than his handicap and claim the B Grade Trophy as well as the B Grade Scratch with an 83. Our A Grade Scratch went to Kevin Hoppe who does not too much wrong most weeks and shot a nice 78 in the brisk and blustery conditions.

The ball competition was paid back to 70 on a countback with balls going to John Brownhill (68), Craig Henman (68), Bernie Parker (69), Rick Preston (69), Peter Steinke (69) and Kevin Hoppe (70 c/b). Our Bendigo Bank Hole in One almost went off this week with a shot from Craig Henman that would have looked special from the tee, coming to rest at a mere 24cm from the hole. The carton draw was kindly re-invested by first name out Craig Filmer, yet the next name out was the Carton professional grabber in Ian Bruce who was last seen choking on them, along with all his new friends in a shout.

Greg Heycox Takes Midweek With the bleaker weather, scores midweek have come back to a bit of normalcy and a good round being paid for beating handicap by a few. This week that winner was Greg Heycox.

Greg has shot a 27 point card on the par 24 point 12 hole layout. In so doing the 3 shots he beat par by have now been deducted and Greg will resume his transmission with a still very generous 25.5.

QUEEN OF THE GREEN Last Thursday 8 women bowlers competed for points on the third week of the ‘Queen of the Green’. After the cold wet weather prior to that, Thursday was a very pleasant day for bowls.

Kate Cooper won the day with the biggest margin. Next Thursday will be the Finals of the District Singles Championships so the fourth day of the ‘Queen of the Green’ will have to wait until Thursday 14 June. Women’s Thursday Bowls is back again, stronger than ever, so don’t miss out.

2018 WOMEN’S BC AGM The Women’s Bowling Club AGM will be held on 9 July. All members need to put that in their diary so they can attend this important meeting.
