Cherry Chase this Sunday IMAGE: Join in the fun this Sunday

Chinamans Dam in Young will be buzzing this Sunday, 12 November when over 600 runners, walkers and volunteers gather for the Cherry Chase: Chase the Colour. The event includes a 5km and 10km fun run or walk and then the popular Colour Run where participants are asked to wear white and will be ‘coloured’ on course.

Organisers said the registrations have been a little slower this year than they would have liked but are expecting the community to rally and register this week to support this great event.

“We appreciate there is lots on around this time of year and people leave registering to the last minute,” said committee member Kaliegh Smerdon.

“If we want great events to happen in our community then we need to support them and more importantly all of the funds raised from

this event will be going towards supporting youth in our community.”

The first event, the 10km Cherry Chase will start at 8.45am with the Cherry Chase 5km then starting at 9am. The Colour Run will start at 11am. The Young Farmers Markets will be in attendance as will Mr Whippy, Juicy Lucys providing coffee and Valleyfresh will be selling some early season cherries and strawberries.

“The start/finish area at Chinamans Dam will be buzzing. We will have a DJ on stage and some other great local entertainers along with Rotary cooking up a bbq,” shared Kaliegh.

“If running isn’t your thing you are not alone.

Grab a few friends and walk the course and just enjoy the great community atmosphere.”

TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE Chinaman’s Dam Road Precinct Cherry Chase: Chase the Colour 5km and 10km Fun Run and Colour Run Sunday 12 November 2017 from 7:30am – 1:00pm Council advises a temporary road closure will be implemented on Sunday 12 November between the hours of 7:30am to 1:00pm for the Cherry Chase: Chase the Colour 2017. The event will be held around the Chinaman’s Dam road precinct that includes Pitstone Road, Berkley Road, Majors Road and Kelly’s Road. The road network will reopen at 1:00pm.

Residents of this area are asked to keep traffic to a minimum and will be allowed to enter and exit the area but are advised to drive with caution as the event will be in progress.

Traffic Control Officers and Race Marshals will be on duty during the event. Vehicle access to Chainman’s Dam Chinese Tribute Garden will not be permitted.

Vehicles access to Sawpit Gully is available via Kingsvale Road.

PROPOSED LANDCARE PLANTINGS ROCKY HILL AND SPRING STREET RESERVES

Young District Landcare have prepared planting plans for Rocky Hill and Spring Street reserves.

“Cleaning the mains is an important and necessary part of maintaining the system and ensuring it continues to deliver clean, fresh water to residents when they turn on the taps in their home and yard,” General Manager Anthony McMahon said.

“By making sure the system is well looked after, this also helps avoid any potential problems down the track,” he said.

Mr McMahon explained that the cleaning will be carried out in stages.

schedule to undertake the work throughout November and into early December,” Mr McMahon said.

“Residents would have received a notice in their mail box setting-out the dates on which the work will be carried out in their area. These dates are also on Council’s website, or can be obtained by phoning Council’s Young office on 6380 1200,” he said.

Mr McMahon said the work involves cleaning the mains using an air scouring process.

This process may cause some temporary discolouring, loss of pressure or an interruption in supply. Road signs will be put up in the streets undergoing cleaning, with works to start at approximately 8:30am and finish up no later than 6pm.

Residents should avoid using their washing machines and dish washers during the hours when work is underway in their area. To help prevent air entering the household water system, it’s advised that taps not be open while cleaning is underway in your area.

Once the work is complete, residents should check their water supply and flush their own pipes by running a back-yard tap until the water returns to normal. There may be some air trapped in the house water pipes which may cause some spluttering. In this event, residents should run their tap until all the trapped air leaves the pipe; this should only take minutes. heritage, and ensure that future generations have that all-important connection to the past,” Mayor Ingram said. “$36,000 all-up will be invested throughout the region as Council actively engages with the community to support them in managing and promoting heritage places within Hilltops,” he said.

Mayor Ingram said as part of Council’s ongoing strategy to conserve and manage heritage assets throughout the region, Councillors resolved at last week’s Ordinary Meeting to lobby the State Government for further funding to carry out significant heritage planning studies.

“Council will be lodging a bid for $100,000 in funding to carry out heritage studies, including an Aboriginal heritage study and a heritage main street study,” Mayor Ingram said.

“These studies are vital to the long-term management of our valuable heritage assets as they allow us to identify and appropriately record the cultural heritage of the Hilltops Region, to help to ensure the community understands and cares for its heritage,” he said.

Young High School Welcomes New Teacher

The team from Art of Espresso are super excited to be able to present this national award winning blues & folk band The Waifs to Young. The Art of Espresso family are massive fans of these artists and were able to convince the band to detour from the main cities and come play here in Young. This is a huge coup for the town and surrounding regions. They have a huge following both nationally and overseas and have played with the likes of Bob Dylan, JBT and many more great artists.

2017 marks the continuation of The Waifs 25th Anniversary tour across Australia. The Waifs are celebrating and commemorating this event having released their critically acclaimed double album called “Ironbark” which took out the number one position on the Aria charts, this was the first time the band had achieved this milestone.

Ironbark was recorded in true Waifs style in a make shift studio in the unfinished kitchen of Josh Cunningham’s rural retreat on the NSW South Coast across two weeks. The name references the majestic Eucalyptus tree which stood sentinel over the band as they recorded, and also reflects on the resilience and inner strength of the wood of these trees as opined in the song of the same title.

An Evening with The Waifs features over two hours of music that spans their 25 year history of touring with their sets determined by input from you, and laced with your stories.

The concert is on Tuesday 21st November at the Young Town Hall. At the time of going to print tickets were all SOLD OUT!

Young High school has welcomed Brendan Gale as the new PDHPE head teacher in term 4. Brendan has taught in a number of schools including Oberon, Ingleburn and most recently Cootamundra. During this time he has built extensive experience and knowledge in his area of expertise, PDPHE. Brendan stated he is excited to be joining the staff at Young High School as it is a school that is progressive and moving forward. He is also looking forward to working in a larger school, which also means more staff for the collegial support and sense of community that comes with working in a larger team environment.

David Marsh NSW Individual Landcarer Award

David Marsh from “Allendale” Boorowa took out the Australian Government Individual Landcarer Award at the NSW Landcare conference recently held in Albury.

David is acknowledged as the catalyst for the early Landcare movement in Boorowa. David is a passionate and inspirational grazier and widely acknowledged for gently and persuasively awakening the community and alerting primary producers as to the fundamental links between catchment health and long term profitability.

In response to eucalyptus die back and dryland salinity David has planted since 1978, approximately 15% of his 841 ha property to native trees combined with large area to perennial pastures. The Marshes property “Allendale” is gazetted as a Wildlife Refuge and is a wonderful example of how sympathetic land management increases biodiversity and enables degraded landscapes to heal themselves.

David was a committee member of the Boorowa Community Landcare Group for 15 years and is still an active member and mentor. Recently David spoke at a Boorowa Community Landcare members meeting detailing his journey to sustainable land management and again at an in-paddock pasture discussion with the Young Graziers network sponsored by Boorowa Community Landcare. David continues to offer his property and give his time to speak at workshops sponsored by a number of different Landcare groups across the region.

The NSW Landcare Awards are supported by the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, NSW Government, Landcare NSW and Landcare Australia.

Boorowa Community Landcare co-ordinator Linda Cavanagh and Chair Kathryn McGuirk also gave a presentation at the NSW Landcare conference on the Parliamentary Friends of Landcare event which was held in North Sydney on 1 May. A bus full of local students and Landcare members travelled to North Sydney to celebrate the 17 year partnership that Boorowa Community Landcare has with North Sydney Bushcare.

From Hilltops Councillor CHRIS MANCHESTER The next three years of the new Council will be one of learning, work and community involvement. The eleven new Councillors of Hilltops will need to work closely together to make this new Council work, and to give it direction into the future.

You don’t get too many opportunities to mold what you believe is the right direction; Hilltops as a new Council is one of these opportunities.

This direction comes in many forms, but first is the Community Strategic Plan, which Council is currently working on, and I encourage any resident – both young and old – to have input into this very important document, which will give the Council direction on community needs into the future.

The Local Environment Plan (LEP) and the Development Control Plan, are probably the most important instruments that this Council will develop over the next three years. This will set the planning and location of the future development across this region. This includes residential and industrial areas, and also the impact on the very important rural sector. This also will be done with input from residents across the whole region.

After these plans have been adopted it is too late to complain, so have your say.

The Community Infrastructure Grants that was part of the amalgamation sweetener from the State Government have started, and over the next few years the towns and villages will see the benefit of this money. Hopefully it will help provide some much-needed infrastructure for these communities; this infrastructure may never have happened if not for these grants.

Since the election in September, the Councillors have been meeting regularly at workshops to get updates and have input into where Hilltops is heading since the amalgamation. I hope these workshops continue, and this will help set some of the direction I mentioned at the beginning.

Let’s all work together to make Hilltops Council the leader.

THE OLD MURRUMBURRAH

COURTHOUSE

Over the last twelve months Harden and Murrumburrah locals would have noticed numerous up grades and restorations happening at the site of the old Murrumburrah Courthouse, the home of the Harden Murrumburrah Arts Council. The building had been neglected for 18 years or so. All of these activities have been made possible due to a grant and private donations. Twelve months ago an application was made to Hilltops Council for a grant to be spent on external upgrade works on the building. These much needed works have been managed by volunteer project manager Nina Horton. According to Mrs Horton “This building is a very important historical artefact within the Harden Murrumburrah district, its restoration is critical to improving the public access, their enjoyment of the building and also the overall longevity of the building into the future. Applying for grants was the only way we were able to continue art classes, kids workshops, weekend adult workshops etc. The previous Harden Shire Council had allocated small annual grants which really helped us to continue running our programs. We also received a donation which enabled us to proceed with overdue internal upgrades.”

The development of the Murrumburrah Courthouse all started back on 13 February 1861 when the local Justices of the peace, Edgar Beckham, the Commissioner for Crown Lands and the residents of Murrumburrah petitioned the NSW Government for a watch house and courthouse to be established in the area.

This was due to the increase in crime and lawlessness that had arisen in the district especially after the discovery of gold at Demondrille and nearby at Burrangong.

The watch house came first in 1862. A court of petty sessions was opened on 15th September 1865 and this operated in a basic building until the brick courthouse was built.

Land was allocated for the courthouse on the corner of Vernon St and Albury St just at the crown of the hill. The brick building was built in 1880 by

the builder C Hardy from Wagga and a Mr Arnott as an overseer of the work.

The building has concrete foundations, a brick façade with decorative details like the stucco covered archways, the rusticated quoins to both the central courtroom and the wings at the back of the central building and also the stucco cornerstones. Overall it is a symmetrical building.

The courtroom itself is a double height room.

The front of the building is gabled in style with three round arched windows the top of these arches are framed with cream stucco. Above the arches there is the name of the building and date it was built. Above this plaque is a circular louvered opening.

The designer of the building was the Colonial Architects office. The architecture of the building is an example of Victorian free classical styling with gabled and parapeted façade. The style of the building is a slight variation away from the typical form of courthouses built in New South Wales during that part of the 19th century.

The Courthouse was registered with the National Trust in 1978. It operated as a courthouse until 15th July 1988. The building’s facilities have been utilised by the Harden

Murrumburrah Arts Council for the past 25 years. The Courthouse today is still an important element to the streetscape of the township of Murrumburrah.

The significant restoration work so far have allowed for the interior of the building to be painted in the required heritage colours, the kitchen and bathrooms have been renovated.

Heating and cooling have been installed as well as a new lighting system which works brilliantly for the art shows which are regularly held here. A new gallery hanging system for hanging pictures has also been installed. This will make the task of hanging pictures for their art exhibits a lot easier. Most importantly the building has full disabled access and disabled bathroom facilities.

The next step in the restoration plan is to fix up the termite damage. “We applied for a grant with the Heritage Near Me back in April this year. This funding is required for the flooring works as at present there is severe termite damage throughout building. I received a phone call three weeks ago from Bronny Taylor, NSW state MP from Nimmitabel, informing me that we have been successful in gaining the funding. The final works will take a few months for completion.” Says Mrs Horton.

Healthy body, healthy mind at Hennessy Recreational Therapy Centre People ages 65 years and over and those living with a disability in Young and surrounding districts are reminded of the importance of keeping active and maintaining their social connections. Research shows physical activity and cognitive challenges are a great way to keep healthy and happy as we age.

The Hennessy Recreational Centre (HRTC), operated by Mercy Care Centre Young, offers a variety of programs which are designed to support, challenge and enhance psychological, social emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing.

Mercy Care Centre Young Nurse Unit Manager Mary – Lou Cusack said HRTC provides holistic recreational therapy overseen by qualified allied health professionals.

“The centre offers a range of social programs and activities as well as health education, exercise classes, guest speakers and brain games,” Ms Cusack said “The staff are extremely enthusiastic and always welcome feedback from clients about how they can improve and enhance the programs on offer. In keeping with the Mercy Health values, Person – centred care underpins all of the services Mercy Care Centre Young provides including those at HRTC,” she adds.

Other programs offered at HRTC include socialisation, cognitive and physical stimulation sessions designed for people living with dementia, an interactive peer group for young people with a disability and a men’s social group. The men’s group runs twice a week and brings men together to socialise with the aim of decreasing loneliness, social isolation, boredom and depression.

Colin Edgar regularly attends the men’s group and said it provides a friendly environment to talk and take part in activities.

“We enjoy a footy tipping competition and regular bus outings,“ Mr Edgar said. “I would highly recommend this group to men living in

the Young Community, especially men like myself who live alone and would like to have a day out.”

Mercy Care Centre Young offers all serviced at the HRTC free of charge. People can also arrange free transport to and from the centre on the Mercy Care Centre Young bus which is equipped with a wheelchair hoist. Morning and afternoon tea are supplied at HRTC. A light lunch of mixed sandwiches, soup and dessert can be purchased for $5. Pollinators Week What is Pollination?

When plants are in flower they rely on pollinators such as bees and other insects to transfer the male sex cells (pollen) to the female reproductive parts of flowers. This is not just your common garden variety flowers that you pick for an indoor vase display, this is all plants including crops. This process is called pollination, which then leads to fertilisation. If this process is successful the plants will develop seeds and fruit. Over 75% of the world’s flowering plants rely on insect pollinators to reproduce.

What is Pollinators week?

It is to increase the awareness of the importance of bees and other pollinating insects in our environment especially during our spring. It is a designated week when community, business and organisations can come together to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators and support their needs. Through group activities community members can learn together and increase their awareness and act on their increased knowledge.

This is the third year this event has been celebrated in Australia and it has been recognised by the Australian Government Department of the Environment. This event has been celebrated in the Northern Hemisphere since June 2007, their spring. It is really important here in Australia we recognise what the issue is and what we can do to improve the environment for pollinators. By having this event peo-

ple’s awareness will be increased and they will gain knowledge about how to create pollinator friendly environments.

According to Dr Megan Halcroft “It’s a great way to engage communities in fun and educational activities, to learn about why our insect pollinators are so important in our ecosystem.

Without pollinators the food quality and yield would be very low and the costs would be much higher than now. They also drive biodiversity, enabling plants to reproduce and support the food web within the environment.”

Why is Pollinators Week Important?

Pollinator numbers are under threat across the world. This is because of a number of reasons · With the spread of urbanisation in our cities their natural habitat is being removed and it’s being replaced by “flowerless landscape” such as concrete roads and grass or gardens planted out with only one or two species of plants. · Agricultural practices sometimes form a monoculture. This means one crop will be planted out annually in areas where there would have been numerous floral resources. · The use of pesticides has increased which will kill beneficial insects as well as pests.

Hopefully by making people aware of these facts they will do their part in trying to improve conditions for Pollinators.

What can you do to help increase the number of pollinators?

Give them a Food Source and Water You don’t even need to have a back yard to do this. It is possible to plant out plants in pots or planter boxes that are on your deck or a veranda or even a roof top area. The most important thing is to just make a start by planting out some plants. Habitat/Shelter You should also ensure that they have places to nest and rear offspring. This is best done by conserving their natural habitats in the first place, however in your own garden you can provide them with further habitat by building bee hotels or nesting blocks.

Chemical Free Zone Also, most importantly you should cease or reduce the pesticides that you use.

Who are the Pollinators?

It’s not just bees that carry out the task of pollination. There are thousands of animals that also carry out this task as they drink nectar from the flowers. These insects include animals such as moths, beetles, butterflies, wasps, ants, moths and even the pesky flies and also animals such as bats, birds and small marsupials. These pollinators will be after the nectar of the flower to feed themselves and their young they then as a by-product of this action also brush past the pollen within the flower and collect this as they move from flower to flower, allowing pollination to happen as they transfer pollen grains between other flowers.

Bees are just very good at pollination because they not only eat the nectar but they collect the pollen as well so they get out amongst more flowers more often… as per the saying “Busy as A Bee”.

What is the main differences (other than appearance) between Honey Bees and Native Bees?

Social vs Solitary The European honey bee was introduced to Australia in the 1820’s by the European set-

tlers. It is a social bee which means it lives in a hive with hundreds of other bees whilst the majority of native bees are mainly solitary bees and they live alone. Of the 1600 or so species of native bees found in Australia only 11 species are social.

Honey Production The native bees do not really produce large amounts of honey however some do store pollen and make honey to survive over the cooler months.

What should I plant in my garden to attract pollinators?

Planting out patches of a variety of flowers in your green space is the best way to get started.

If you have the space grouping flowering plants together in at least a 1 metre x 1 metre area is most ideal to attract pollinators. If you don’t have garden beds and are using pots try to group your pots close together. Pollinators like humans, prefer to have variety in their diet and so the more diverse range of plants you plant out the better for attracting a diverse range of pollinator species. Also make sure that the flowering times happen at different periods of the year. If you can provide a consistent food supply throughout the year the number of pollinators in your garden will continue to grow.

Bees in particular tend to be attracted to blue and purple flowering plants.

Native plants – such as Tea Trees, Grevillea, Banksia, Wattles, Bottle Brush, Coastal Rosemary, Lilly Pilly, Hakea, Gum trees, Hardenbergia, Prosanthera.

Exotic plants – such as Dahlias, Roses, Buddleia, Marigold, Hebe, Lavenders, Salvias, Daisies, Diosma.

Herbs – Rosemary, Basil, Thyme, Mint, Sage, Parsley, Coriander.

Vegetables – Tomato, Cucumber, Zucchini, Pumpkin, Eggplant, Cucumber, Peas, Beans Also flowering trees, fruit trees and nut trees.

The next step in maintaining your pollinator garden is to ensure that all your plants are healthy and do flower well. You will need to ensure the plants receive sufficient water and nutrients to grow, thrive and survive. If you are using any fertilisers try to use organic chemical free fertilisers and ideally do not use pesticides in your garden or if you do have to use a pesticide, educate yourself on what natural remedies could be used or use organic products that only target the pest. Refer to products from Eco – organic Garden for a range of organic fertilisers and pesticides (www.ecoorganicgarden.com.au).

How can I provide Habitat or Shelter in my garden for Pollinators?

If you leave some small sections (1 m x 1m ) of your garden beds un mulched this will allow ground nesting bees to get easy access to the open soil where they will burrow and create their own shelter, having a layer of mulch in place will prevent this from happening. Rather than cleaning up all fallen branches, logs and piles rocks leave some in place where cavities can form and provide shelter for pollinators.

Pollinators Nests You can also make pollinator nests by bundling up hollow stems of wood together, cut them to 2 metres in length and then wire them together. These could then be hung in a tree or on a fence.

Bee Hotels or Bee B&B’s You will need to construct a five sided box out of a natural timber. It only needs to be 15 cm deep. Then you can fill the box with a selection of different diameter garden canes or bamboo which are hollow and cut to 15cm lengths. You can also add pieces of timber with various sized holes drilled into it. Make sure you vary the width of the canes and holes so that you attract different species of bees.

Capacity and Powers of Attorney When considering a Power of Attorney a person’s capacity has 3 dimensions : 1. Legal capacity; 2. Mental capacity; and 3. Physical capacity.

Legal Capacity Both the principal and attorney must possess legal capacity.

Legal Capacity for the Principal The principal must possess legal capacity at the time the power of attorney is made. As legislation does not specify a minimum age for legal capacity to make a power of attorney then common law principles apply. Basically this may mean that the person giving the power of attorney has a sufficient understanding and intelligence to enable him or her to understand fully what is proposed. The age of the principal is not decisive.

Legal Capacity for the attorney The same principles as with the principal apply to the attorney ie. there is no age requirement.

Does the attorney have sufficient understanding of the nature and role of an attorney is the key enquiry. The other requirement is that the attorney must not be bankrupt.

Mental Capacity There is a presumption of Mental Capacity of the principal. The onus of rebutting this presumption lies on the person asserting that the principal does not have mental capacity.

There are various factors which the courts look at to determine a person’s mental capacity. It is a fluid determination in that a finding of incapacity in relation to one type of legal transaction does not automatically mean that capacity is lacking for another type of legal transaction.

Physical Capacity (functionality) It is considered that the principal must sign the instrument creating the power of attorney personally for it to be effective.

Capacity is one of a number of issues to be considered when making a Power of Attorney.

A Day on The Grass – Wombat Hotel A Day on The Grass will be held for the second time at the Wombat Hotel starting at 1pm. Entertainment provided by The Choirboys, James Southwell Band, Sammy Owen Blues Band, The Millards, Ben & Katie, Harry Cleverdon, and Pepperjack.

Shine Shield Swimming Competition This event is held in Boorowa and involves a range of organised swimming events, canteen facilities and family picnic. Swimming teams from Yass, Binalong, Boorowa, Harden and Jugiong participate.

Lily Rice, a year 6 student at Murringo Public School, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Lions Club of Young. Lions Club International is sponsoring the contest to emphasise the importance of world peace to young people in all countries.

“I believe there should be peace in all cultures and civil rights for everyone,” 11 years old Lily from Murringo, said. The poster was judged and selected by 4 Lions Club members for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “The Future of Peace”.

The Lions Club of Young President, Stuart Freudenstein and Peace Poster Contest Chairperson, Heather Bailey, were impressed by the attitude of Murringo Public School Principal, Kaelene Neville in her willingness to involve her students in the contest. Students aged 11-13 were eligible to participate and, “while Murringo Public School is a small school, the 6 students who participated did their school proud”, Chairperson Heather commented. President Stuart added that “being able to provide students with the opportunity to share their visions of peace is wonderful.”

Lily’s poster will advance to face stiff competition through the district, multiple district and international rounds of competition. One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of US$5000 (or your country’s cash equivalent) plus a trip for the winner and two family members to an award ceremony held in the USA. Playing Ditch Weight

The Wagga District side were the winners of the Bing Wallder Shield competition play at Wagga over the weekend. They won four of the five games with just one loss to Southern Highlands.

The South Western side won two of their five games defeating Southern Slopes and Southern Highlands. For South Western the team of John Goggin, Terry McDonald, Damien Miller and Chris Grimson won four of their five games and lost to Wagga by 1 shot – a very good result.

At Young further games in the Minor Singles were played during the week.

On Thursday afternoon Ted Loader went from a lead of 16–14 over David Donges to a clear–cut win 31–18 and Joe Bargwanna led all the way against Ian Gailey for a 31–15 win.

Two games were played on Saturday.

Greg Woods opened up a commanding lead of 21–4 over Peter Berry and despite Pe-

ter recovering to trail just 25–20 Greg went on to win 31–20.

There was an even start to the game between Milan Brankovic and Steve Walsh with Steve leading 18–13 after 19 ends.

After 28 ends Milan led 22–21 but Steve then won 6 consecutive ends to win 31–22.

With a number of regular players in Wagga there were just 14 players for Jackpot bowls.

The vouchers sponsored by Penrose Funerals went to the triples combination of Vic Brown (great to see Vic back on the green), Albert Carter and Phil Taylor with a margin of 12 shots.

Other winning teams were Kevin Bryant and Ian Schofield (2 shots) and James Freudenstein and Joe Bargwanna (9 shots).

Only four more days to the largest Annual event held at Young Bowling Club. This is a very exciting time for the members of the Women’s Bowling Club as they play host to over 200 bowlers from all over the state that come to the Cherry Festival Tournament. 14 and 15 November will see the Ladies Triples Tournament and 17 and 18 November will see the Mixed Tournament. Last minute arrangements were made at the meeting on Monday so the event will run without a hitch.

Those Bowlers who need to buy or replace any bowls equipment will be happy to know that Lawn Bowls Accessories & Clothing, who are based in Penrith, will have a shop at the Young Bowling Club on 14 & 15 November. Also Brazzisunbra will have a stand on 14 & 15 for the Ladies to try their wonderful

Local Sporting Identities in the Queens Baton Relay 2018

Two local sporting identities, Lester Sheather and Paul Cameron have been named to carry the baton as part of the Queens’s Baton Relay for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The baton relay started in London on the 13th March 2017 and will travel 230000 kilometres across Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas and Europe before arriving in Canberra on 25th January 2017, in time for Australia Day celebrations.

Lester and Paul will carry the baton when it reaches Parkes on 29th January 2018. The baton will then travel to all states of Australia arriving on the Gold Coast on the 1st April 2018 in time for the Commonwealth Games opening. Olympians including Dawn Fraser, Grant Hackett and Sally Pearson are also among the Australian bearers chosen. Both men are very excited about carrying the baton. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said it would be the experience of a lifetime. “The baton bearers recognise the achievements and aspirations of Australians from all walks of life,” she said. “From ambitious 10-year-olds to humble volunteers and well-known Australians from a variety of fields.”

to participate in boxing competitions. He represented Australia at the 1958 Empire Games in Cardiff, Wales. He continued to successfully represent the Young district and then again Australia in various boxing competitions around the world such as the Diamond Belt Championships which were the equivalent of the World Championships in Mexico City and the Australasian Championships in New Zealand.

He hung up his boxing gloves after 14 years of boxing when he was 24 years old however after a few years he came back to continue to help train and coach local boxers as part of the Young Police Boys Citizens Club. In 1982 he completed all of his tickets and training to be a fully qualified boxing trainer, judge and referee for both amateur and professional boxers. He also continued his support of the local supporting sporting teams by coaching his sons football teams throughout their playing years.

He says he feels very happy to be chosen to be part of the Baton Relay. “It’s a great honour as only 2000 Australians get to be involved and I feel very lucky to be chosen.”

His son, Graham Sheather says that he is very excited to see his father carrying the Baton and will be there in full force to support him on the day.

“We are all very proud of him, it’s not before time he deserves to be recognised. He is very fit for his age. I never got to see him fight but from the stories I have heard from other people he had a good following and he was a great fighter/boxer, many people would come to see one of his fights. Although Dad was an amateur boxer many of his opponents who he did beat went on to become professional boxers.”

This year Lester was inducted into Young’s Walk of Fame for local sporting identities which is another honour that he feels thrilled about.

Lester’s sister Rhonda O’Donnell said “I’m thrilled to pieces that after all these years he has been recognised, very well deserved”.

Paul Cameron Paul has four boys all who have a great love of sport. This has given him the opportunity to be involved with Cricket, Touch Football, Basketball, Rugby Union and SocPaul Cameron with his cer just to name IMAGE: youngest son Josh - after winning a few. Paul is the Soccer under 10 Grand Final very happy to be representing Young and the community. “I feel very privileged and honoured to be part of the relay and quite humbled. I am very lucky to be representing my hometown as we really do have so many sporting heroes and also many marvellous volunteers who keep all the sports running in this wonderful community.

Young is very lucky to have a sports council and I feel blessed to be part of it. It just goes to show you how much sport is a part of people’s lives and gives them so many wonderful memories and experiences. It brings us all together. I will be representing all those people and it truly will be a very proud moment. Also to be able to do this with Lester is even more of an honour as he is one of Australia’s greatest boxers.”

Boorowa Ex-Services Bowling Club At last Thursday’s mixed social bowls in Boorowa three players tied for the win. Two old timers and a relative newcomer all on 26 points. The players were, Graham Jenkins,

Nev Thurtell and Col Good. These three were followed by Lorraine Bales on 25 and our gambling director Gary Hollier on 24. The jackpot draw which is electronically decided upon with

all player scores placed in a “Gadjet” was won without recourse to armaments by the Binalong Bushranger Ned Kelly. Weather permitting social bowls are on again Thursday at 1pm.
