Five beautiful calves rejected as by-products of the dairy industry. They should have still been with their mums but they had been heartlessly taken away from them so that humans can drink their milk. Imagine the distress of the cows being separated from their calves when their whole physical and mental being is yearning to nurse their young.

Helping, and campaigning for , animals in need...

Hillside Patron: Martin Shaw

2017 has been an important year for Hillside. You can read in the following pages how we took in more animals than ever. However, with the help of a kindly bequeathed legacy, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to begin the purchase of a 132 acre farm near to our Sanctuary. Later, we were able to arrange finance to complete the purchase. A big ‘ThankYou’ to everybody who donated to our Land Appeal - your donations meant that the final loan was much less than it might have been and, with your help, we already own a good part of the farm.

We were also lucky enough to lease another farm, and 130 acres of adjoining land, close to the Norfolk coast, near Lowestoft. We are hoping to be able to open to visitors here in the future. Of course, none of this would be possible without the kindness, compassion and generosity of our supporters.

Thank you all so much.

Helping Horses in Need...

We gave sanctuary to 25 horses who were seized, as part of a Police operation, from an owner who has been previously convicted under the Animal Welfare Act. The horses were mainly pregnant mares who still had previous foals at foot. Once safely at the sanctuary, we concentrated on worming, delousing and vaccinating them all, while providing extra special care to the foals, some of whom were in poor condition. The mares went on to safely give birth last Spring.

On arrival - the horses, safe at last, in one of our quarantine areas.

Tinsel...

Last Christmas, our vet was attending to a client’s animals when a Labrador turned up carrying a baby deer! Fortunately, the vet was able to check the fawn over and confirm that, despite her experience, she had not been hurt. Not knowing where her mother was, we were asked to take the recently born fawn in. Tinsel, as we called her, has gone from strength to strength and you can see her, all grown up in the picture below, taken this Christmas, a year after her rescue...

The Story of One Pound Pony...

e and well at the Sanctuary...

Unable to get up, this Shetland pony, we’ve called Bob, was found tangled up in the wire which had formed part of his tethering chain.

From the condition of the ground where he was lying, he had been marooned there for some time. Because he had been illegally tethered, he was freed and then collected by a horse warden and taken to a stray horse pound. He then came, with other stray and abandoned ponies on to Hillside.

During 2017 we have taken in 276 horses and ponies from stray horse pounds

Sixteen Horses and Ponies Arrive as Yet Another Sanctuary Closes...

In April we undertook an emergency rescue to bring sixteen horses and ponies to Hillside from a Manchester animal sanctuary that could no longer manage to survive. The manager's mother pleaded with us to take the horses after her daughter had left the sanctuary. The constant stress of running a sanctuary and worrying about raising the funds to feed and care for the animals, had taken its toll and she could no longer cope. In light of continuing concerns about the welfare of the horses and ponies, the RSPCA had visited on several occasions. On collecting the animals our driver told us to be prepared to receive several in poor condition.

It is such a shame to see another sanctuary close their doors after trying to do their best to help animals in need.

We are so grateful to our supporters, whose kindness allows us to help in desperate situations such as these. Thank you for caring.

The Farmers That... Just Couldn’t...

Here are some of the many animals, including cows, goats. pigs. horses and ponies that we gave a home to in October 2017 when their owners could no longer afford to feed them. The owners ran a farm shop where they had intended to sell meat but having bred the goats, they couldn’t face having them slaughtered! We also took in 16 cows which they also couldn’t send to the same fate after they saw firsthand the dreadful suffering that animals were enduring at the slaughterhouse.

When first in business, they took a herd of sheep to the slaughterhouse. When they started to leave, all the sheep jumped out of the abattoir pen and followed them back to the trailer! The ‘farmers’ loaded them up and took them back home again.

In the end, the kindhearted ‘would be farmers’ found their business financially unviable and became bankrupt. We took in their animals, including some heavy horses, who had nowhere else to go.

10

In January, we were alerted to a swan who was reported to be in trouble with a damaged wing on a local river. We had to wade, waist deep, into the river to reach the swan and bring her back to the bank, where it was obvious that she was in need of urgent treatment. We rushed her to our vet who attended to her badly infected wing. Back at the Sanctuary, our thoughts turned to her mate on the river who had been extremely distressed at having his lifelong mate taken away from him. So, we took the decision to return to catch him so they could stay together while the female recovered. We wish we had filmed the heartwarming moment when

the pair were reunitedthey were obviously so relieved to be back in each other's company. The injured swan's wing was treated and dressed every day but our vet advised the best course of action was to amputate the afflicted wing and the operation was carried out successfully. However, without the use of both wings, we could not release her back into the wild. So, both birds were taken to Hillside Shire Horse Sanctuary at West Runton, to live together on our well-fenced pond where they wouldn’t have to worry about predators.

Soon after, the swans (who we named Romeo and Juliet) were released,Romeo flew away. However,a month later, he returned and has not left Juliet’s side since. They now remain living happily together on our pond, atWest Runton by the sea with other rescued swans.

Vegetarian Beef Farmer Sends His Cows to Hillside...

In April 2017 we were asked to take in a herd of 70 cattle, including 30 pregnant cows after a massive turnaround in thinking by the farmer, a vegetarian, who could no longer bear to send his cows to the slaughterhouse. Instead, he got in touch with theVegan Society, who contacted Hillside to ask if we could give the cows a permanent safe home in the sanctuary.

Jay, the farmer, had grown up working with the family’s herd of cows but,

over time, has seen that there was much more to these animals than we are led to believe.

He said ‘Ibegantoseethatcows recogniseeachother , andthey’ve got verygoodmemories.Theyalso experiencearangeofemotions–they canbesad, happy, bored, excited. They doalsohavefacialexpressions. You can tellwhatacow’sthinkingbylookingat it.I’ve even seen cows cry. We were happy to welcome Jay’s cows to the Sanctuary. During the summer all the pregnant cows safely gave birth to calves and they will all stay together as a herd for the rest of their natural days.

The story of Jay’s cows coming to Hillside was featured on BBC Countryfile in July 2017.

Twin Foals Born to Rescued Mare...

This year we had around 60 rescued mares, mostly from stray horse pounds, who came to us pregnant and were waiting to give birth. Staff watched over them day and night to assist if necessary to ensure the foals were born safely. One rescued Thoroughbred mare gave birth in the early hours of the morning and surprised us with twin foals - a colt and a filly! When scanning the mares, our vet advised that one may be carrying twins, but this wasn't the mare!

The first, smaller, foal was safely born while the mare, who we took in after she had been abandoned in Cheshire last year, needed our help to deliver the second, larger twin.Apparently, the odds of both twin foals surviving is just 10,000 to 1! We are pleased to report that both are growing up to be strong and healthy foals.

Cows Arrive From Ireland...

Jessie’s Moneybox...

Poor Jessie was devastated when heartless thieves ransacked the contents of her family's car and emptied her Hillside collection box of the donations she had been carefully saving to hand in to a Hillside Open Day.

However, when we let our supporters know what had happened, they sprang into action and donated to help Jessie refill her moneybox. Jessie's big frown was soon turned into a beaming smile, and everyone at Hillside was smiling too, when we counted all the donations and found £2415 had been raised for our rescued animals.

We were thrilled to welcome Jessie to our Open Day, (right) where she handed in a further £120 that her family and friends had donated to make up for the actions of the cruel thieves.

An elderly dairy farmer in Ireland who saw BBC Countryfile’s coverage of the vegetarian farmer whose cows came to Hillside (seepage12) asked if we would also give her cows a home.

It was clear that she loved them very much and we were so pleased that, with the help of our supporters, we were able to give this gentle herd a home for life.

A total of 45 cows and 18 calves arrived during 2017 with 20 more expected in spring 2018.

The Working Horse Trust...

The Working Horse Trust were given a deadline by their landlord to vacate the land that had been their horses’ home for 23 years. As much as they tried, they were unable to find another site for their animals. Their last option was to contact Hillside to see if we could offer a home to Celandine and Amber, two Suffolk Punch mares, Dylan, an Ardennes gelding and Drew, a Shire gelding. We were pleased to help and all four arrived safely at our Shire Horse Sanctuary to join the many other rescued heavy horses that live there.

During 2017 we received more visitors to our Shire Horse Sanctuary than ever before! People were able to meet our rescued animals, enjoy a visit to our ‘animal friendly’ Cafe and Gift Shop and even ‘Adopt’ an animal, like Shire HorseWilliam (right). If you would like to adopt one of our rescued animals please see page 29 for more information.

Forty Welsh Ponies...

Among the many animals taken in at ourWest Runton Sanctuary, one of the largest groups was 40 welsh ponies. Some of the mares were pregnant and, soon after arrival five foals were born.

A Three Legged Pig...

Although she was born with just three legs, Petula managed to keep up with her brothers and sisters, who were sadly destined to be made into sausages and pork chops! Because Petula is a particularly friendly pig, a kind lady took her on to live as a pet before she came to Hillside Shire Horse Sanctuary where she has become a firm favourite with the visitors.

Emergency Rescue of 22 Pigs...

We were alerted to the plight of some poorly pigs, including pregnant sows, who were in desperate need of help. Photos showed them looking extremely thin and we heard from a local sanctuary that was unable to take in the pigs, that one or two of the pigs had been found dead and the rest were deperately searching for food. Their owner, who did not want to send them for slaughter, was in desperate need of help.

Trading Standards were also involved with helping these pigs and kind locals were doing their best to feed the hungry animals.

We agreed to take in the survivors, several of whom are not only emaciated but also have a serious skin condition and 22 pigs arrived with us in February 2017. The owner, who had allowed the pigs to free-range over acres of land had got out of his depth looking after them and was pleased that we were offering them a home. Some of the sows arrived pregnant and, in the summer, 38 piglets were born, bringing the number rescued to 60. The largest pig rescue in Hillside’s history!

After arrival at Hillside the pigs were given immediate veterinary treatment and small regular feeds of nutritious food to help them recover.

‘Can you take them?’ This is a question we are so often asked... We have received a call asking if we can take in two separate herds of abandoned horses. The bailiffs are under instruction to ‘dispose’ of the 28 horses and their only chance of life is if we agree to take them in. However,we need to tell them if we have room this week and,if we cannot take them, they will be put to sleep. This truly is a last chance for these poor horses who deserve so much better. To put your mind at rest, we have, or course, agreed to give them all a home here in the Sanctuary.

It is particularly poignant when animals come to the Sanctuary pregnant, and give birth soon after arriving. Seeing the bond between new life and old. A natural and beautiful bond that would have been denied, but will now be free to thrive.

So much of what we are able to do to help animals, to give them that last chance to be the characters they were born to be, is dependant on kind, caring people who make the choice to leave Hillside a legacy, so that when we are asked ‘can you take them?’ , we can say ‘Yes’.

It is only through kindly bequeathed legacies that we have been able to buy new land, shelters, kennels and additional facilities to care for the animals when they arrive at the Sanctuary and, if necessary, to work with them until they are ready to enjoy their new life at Hillside.

Thanks to the kindness of those who have remembered us in their will, we have had the confidence to say ‘Yes’ to horses, ponies, donkeys, cows, sheep, pigs, ducks, rabbits and lots of other animals over the last 22 years and for the animals that receive this wonderful gift, it really is a life to remember...

Our deepest admiration and thanks go out to everyone, past and present, who has thought of Hillside in their Will. If you would like to consider doing this, please ring the Sanctuary office on 01603 736200 and ask for Lesley. Or, email Lesley at legacies@hillside.org.uk for more information or request our ‘Legacy Leaflet’. Thank you for caring

Hillside Farm Animal Investigations...

Following our investigation at Simply Halal, a non-stun abattoir at Banham in Norfolk, where we obtained hours of harrowing footage of appalling treatment of the animals being killed there, we were extremely disappointed when the Food Standards Agency (FSA) granted approval for ‘Norfolk Meat Traders’ to continue slaughtering at the site. Particularly shocking was the fact that Deborah Wilson, a manager at Simply Halal who we had filmed casually standing by as animals were suffering terrible cruelty all around her, was a director of the newly-formed Norfolk Meat Traders!

We were able to continue monitoring the site and filmed Deborah Wilson again, this time involved in the slaughter of horses. However, it soon came to light that they had carried out an illegal horse slaughter and so they also had their licences revoked.

Now another company ‘United Country Foods’ have applied, and we understand been granted approval to slaughter from the site.

In the meantime, after our footage was handed to the FSA, the CPS have initiated a prosecution against Roger Carr and two of the slaughtermen. The case is proceeding through the courts and we will let you know the outcome as soon as we can.

Our New Farm.. Our New Farm..

The 132 acre farm, that, with the help of donations and a kindly bequeathed legacy, we have been able to secure, will allow us to greatly extend our winter accommodation facilities and provide additional summer grazing for many of our new and special care residents. The farm comes with three barns, which will be very useful. One of which, below, is huge!

22

An Interesting History...

Thank you so much to everyone who donated towards the purchase of much needed extra land and facilities for our rescued animals. The SquareYards of land that were kindly contributed will provide a permanent home for many of the animals in our care, and enable us to continue helping others in need. This has been an amazing opportunity to help ensure the future of our rescued animals and to offer hope to those that join us in the years to come...

Our new farm occupies the site of RAF Swannington, which was a second world war airfield, operational from 1944 to 1947. The photo (left) shows a Mosquito fighter- bomber from 157 squadron at it’s dispersal next to St. Peters Church, which is surrounded by our land. The church dates back to the 11th century and contains re-used Roman building material. There are lots of concrete roads and areas which were once the taxi ways and aprons of the airfield. These will be a huge benefit to us. (Seeright)

The Benefit of Concrete..

We have been able to greatly extend the concrete area on another Hillside farm, where we winter many of our rescued horses. We had previously made our large corral into a concrete pad and, this year, thanks to a kind donator, we have been able to extend this all the way to our feed barn and stables. We hope in future years to extend further if funds permit. The concrete has many benefits; The farm vehicles suffer less wear and tear operating on a concrete surface. It is also better for the animals as running horses along it, will help to keep their feet trim and it is easier to spot if any need veterinary attention.

Hillside horses often spend their days grazing in a meadow neighbouring the estate where Anna Sewell, author of Black Beauty, often stayed and close to where she is buried. In the Victorian period, Anna Sewell was a campaigner for animal welfare and was very much a ‘local girl’. When we took over our Sanctuary at West Runton in 2008, we turned the residential property into holiday homes to raise valuable funds to help feed and care for our rescued animals.

If you would like to take a self-catering holiday on the North Norfolk coast, surrounded by our rescued animals, our accommodation offers a very special holiday location for our supporters. In addition to Shire Horse House and Shire Horse Lodge, we also offer holidays in our comfortable Mobile Holiday Home.

If this appeals to you, please write or phone 01603 736200 for further details including dates available and tariffs or visit www.hillside.org.uk

To raise funds we are always very grateful to receive any items of scrap or broken gold or silver jewellery such as the odd earring you may have in the bottom of your drawer. We can turn old, unwanted gold into funds to buy fresh hay for our rescued animals. Even unwanted costume jewellery helps to raise much-needed cash for our animals.

If you have just come back from a foreign holiday with a pocketful of loose change or notes you don’t know what to do with, these too can help us to feed and care for our animals. Old pound coins and fivers are also gratefully received.

If you have moved please be sure to let us know your NEW address as well as your OLD address.

Also, please let us know if any other Hillside supporters at your address have also moved. Thank you.

While some supporters like to receive a receipt to give them peace of mind that their kind donations have arrived safely, others prefer us not to acknowledge their contributions to save us postage. We are always very happy to honour your requests, so please may we ask you to make your wishes clear. If we are unsure, we will always send a receipt. Thank you.
