A Message from our Patron, Martin Shaw...

DearFriend,

During 2016 we continued to take in more horses from dire situations in response to the ongoing horse crisis. In addition to over 1000 rescued farm animals, there are now over 1600 horses, ponies and donkeys being cared for at the Sanctuary.

In the summer many of our rescued horses, cows and sheep graze on over 1500 acres of meadows in the Norfolk countryside where they are checked at least twice every day but otherwise are free to enjoy a wonderfully natural environment.

In the winter they return to the Sanctuary where we lay huge straw beds to keep them comfortable and dry. We also place large straw bales to make high protective walls which give them shelter. In this way we have been able to care for hundreds of animals who would otherwise have come to a sad and distressing end.

This massive undertaking has stretched our resources to their limit and we are only able to keep going with your help...

Please donate on the back page to help us continue this important work.

Thank you

Rescued Cows at Hillside...

Straw

enables us to provide warmth and comfort to our rescued cows

There are 300 rescued cows living at Hillside and each has a story to tell. Many came here as a result of Trading Standards’ cases where their previous owners neglected them and were prosecuted. Some were pets that their loving owners could no longer look after and others were saved by a quirk of fate, such as swimming in a river, or being infertile. Whatever their past, they are now safe to enjoy the rest of their days free from the threat of cruelty, neglect or slaughter. During the summer they get the chance to graze the summer meadows and, when the colder weather arrives, they benefit from the comforts of straw to keep them warm. They have free access to a large barn but many prefer to spend most of the winter days getting comfortable on their straw pads.

This little pony came to Hillside in need of lots of care and attention. Most of his body was covered in a condition called ‘rainscald’ and this was one of the worst cases we had seen.

With lots ofTLC, he improved very quickly. He soon gained weight and was so much brighter in himself. He received veterinary attention to help his skin condition and, on a warm spring day, we gave him a medicated bath which he really seemed to enjoy.

Neglected Ponies Seized from Dangerous Land...

Twenty one ponies and their foals came to Hillside after Trading Standards Officers removed them from land too dangerous for them to remain on.

The owner, who had been convicted by Exeter magistrates for animal welfare and horses passport offences, received a 12 week custodial sentence, suspended for 18 months and has been banned for life from keeping animals for causing extreme suffering to horses and ponies. The court heard how the mares and foals were kept on an area of scrub which contained burnt out cars and other hazardous metal, which was totally inadequate for their needs. Their welfare had been severely compromised.

Arriving with us pregnant, most of these rescued mares went on to safely give birth last spring.

All the stallions were gelded soon after arrival.

Blossom’s Rescue Sadly Closes...

Thanks to the compassion of all our supporters who donated towards our Sanctuary Rescue Fund. We were so grateful to be able to provide a new home for the animals from Blossoms Rescue, which sadly had to close its doors this year after its founder struggled with health issues.

We are pleased to be able to tell you that all the horses, ponies and farm animals who needed a home from Blossoms arrived safely at Hillside. We are, of course, keeping them together and they have settled in well.

It is only with the help of our supporters that we can continue to rescue animals in need and every penny we receive really does count.

A very big ‘Thank you’ for your help.

Deer Rescue...

The fields where our horses and cows graze are a safe haven for the deer, foxes and other wildlife who live there. However, outside the protection of such meadows and woodlands it can be a very different story.

We are always on call, 24 hours a day, to attend mainly deer and foxes who have been injured on the roads. Through veterinary treatment, we always try to save the animal's life but, if this is not possible, we are at least able prevent them having a slow, painful end. We have had many wildlife success stories when we have been able to release recovered foxes and swans and given a home to deer who we have been able to help survive their injuries.

Our latest casualty of the road, is the little Muntjac deer you can see above. We were called to a house where the frightened deer, having been injured on the road, had crashed through the glass front door and then, terrified, ran around the home. On arrival, our staff found him upstairs, on the bed, covered in blood. Worried that he might try to leap through the glass window to the ground below, they had to take great care to contain him safely.

Back at the sanctuary, to save the deer, our vet successfully amputated his damaged leg and he now manages exceptionally well on his three good ones.

Felix...

We were only too pleased to take in little Felix (left) after he was found with his dead mother by the side of a road.

Although he was uninjured, on arrival he was suffering with diarrhea which can indicate a serious problem. Thankfully, with veterinary treatment, that completely cleared up. Felix, named by the gentleman who found him, is a Roe deer fawn. As with all our other deer, he is provided with a variety of natural green foliage that he would enjoy in the wild.

This poor Muntjac was found covered in blood...

Hillside’s work to bring horses and ponies like Copper to safety from various stray horse pounds around the UK has taken us to the brink of what we can do. Since 2012, we have rescued over 900 unwanted horses and ponies and there are now over 1600 in our care and we remain determined not to let these forgotten animals perish miserably as society’s dirty throwaway secret. The plight of these poor animals, often rounded up in herds, is rarely reported, but their lives are worth no less than than any other horse and we will do everything we can to help them. However, the sheer logistics of looking after so many has driven us to find innovative ways of providing their feed and care which you can read about on page 23.

Hard work and forward thinking have helped us to save the lives of hundreds of animals like Copper, but it is only with the ongoing kindness of our supporters that it can be a lasting reality.

Sassie...

So many dogs came to Hillside this year, all with their own character, however a highlight for us has to be Sassie, an affectionate Staffy, who came to us heavily pregnant because somebody hadn’t considered having her spayed. As she became obviously very close to giving birth,we went on stand-by throughout the night and were relieved when she safely produced a litter of seven healthy boys. Sassie was the perfect mum, being very attentive to her new family and they have now all found happy family homes.

Hillside Dog Rescue...

We have continued to take in,and find loving homes for, many dogs that needed our help over the course of the year. They are, of course, all wonderful dogs in their own way. Some can be re-homed immediately while some have issues that require a little time. Others are very challenging and would not be suitable for the majority of homes.

We would like to thank our dedicated kennel staff for looking after our rescued dogs so well. They treat Hillside’s dogs with the same love and attention as they would their own, regularly going ‘above and beyond’ to provide that extra level of care, often in their own time, to ensure our dogs are as comfortable and content as possible.

Hillside Farm Animal Investigations - Exposing Simply Halal...

Over the years, many of our supporters have requested that we make public the plight of cows, sheep and lambs who are cruelly slaughtered in non stun abattoirs.

In 2016, after we were tipped off that officials had often been called in to the premises of the non-stun slaughterhouse at ‘Simply Halal’ in the heart of Norfolk, we decided to launch our own investigation to find out what was happening there.

We placed hidden cameras which recorded eight days of barbaric slaughter of defenceless animals. After viewing our footage, which showed shocking treatment of sheep and cows, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) suspended operations at the slaughterhouse, along with their own vet and meat hygiene inspector.

We very much hope our evidence will lead to a successful prosecution. We are still awaiting the outcome.

Anthony Bagshaw Prosecuted

Following a separate investigation at Bagshaw and Sons Slaughterhouse in Leek, Anthony Bagshaw was sentenced to a custodial term of 10 months in prison and was banned from keeping, owning, transporting or delivering farm animals for 15 years.

Over the last 20 years Hillside's Farm Animal Investigations have exposed a great many cases of animal cruelty and neglect right across the country. To our great disappointment, much of these have not been treated seriously by the Authorities. We are pleased that an

appropriate sentence was handed down to Bagshaw and we hope this will go some way to discouraging others who may be involved in animal cruelty.

Had Hillside's FarmAnimal Investigation team not been able to obtain the harrowing evidence of barbaric cruelty happening behind the closed doors of this 'High Class' family slaughterhouse,it would still be going on right now. We hope the FSA will rise to the challenge of their role, which is so vital in protecting farm animals from the dreadful abuse that is all too common in the farming industry.

RSPCA Approved...

Following a tip-off, our investigators discovered yet another RSPCA Freedom Food farm falling far short of the animal welfare standards they promise for the animals.

Conditions for the hens in this 'Lion Brand' free-range farm were appalling. We filmed conditions from December 2015 to January 2016 and found thousands of balding hens being kept in an area with insufficient perches, ammonia levels more than twice the recommended limit and every hen we checked was infested with mites. In a stunning indictment of the RSPCA Freedom Food (now ‘RSPCA Assured’) scheme, RSPCA inspectors who visited the farm

after our footage was released found nothing we had filmed breached any free-range or Freedom Food regulations. However, respected vet Amir Kashiv, after watching our footage declared ‘the conditions in this and some other hen houses are inhumane’ he went on to say ‘the grim and squalid conditions are a far cry from the image and impression conjured up by the terms ‘free range’ and ‘Freedom Food’

Jamie...

A local vet asked if we could take in this tiny piglet who had been handed into them after being found alone on a country road. We were pleased to help and he was soon being cared for round the clock by our veterinary staff, who gave him two-hourly feeds throughout the night. His coat of many colours was knitted by a kind supporter who had intended it for hens who come to us featherless from battery cages but it was ideal to keep Jamie warm as he came to us very cold and underweight. Jamie is doing very well and is growing into a healthy adult pig.

Pickles...

Pickles was found newly-born on a main road in Norfolk. She received lots of love and attention from the staff at Hillside who fed her through the night. She is pictured at the Sanctuary at just four days old. Now she has grown up she lives with some of our other 250 rescued pigs who have a permanent home in the Sanctuary.

Falling through the slats on the way to slaughter...

We are often brought newly-born piglets that have been found on main roads in Norfolk with their umbilical cords still attached. When there is no pig farm nearby, this is likely to have been caused by a pregnant sow giving birth on the lorry, on the way to the slaughterhouse and the piglets falling through the slats onto the road.

An abattoir worker confirmed to us that sows often arrive at the slaughterhouse having given birth during transport with their tiny piglets lying all over the floor.

‘Can you take them?’ This is a question we are often asked... As I write this, we have received a call asking if we can take in a herd of 35 mares and their foals who have been abandoned. The council need to ‘dispose’ of the horses for the lowest possible cost and a bailiff has managed to convince them it would be cheaper to bring them to Hillside, than to put them to sleep. However, we need to tell them if we have room by tomorrow and, if we cannot take them, they will be put to sleep. This truly is a last chance for these poor mares and foals who deserve so much better.

It is particularly poignant when animals come to the Sanctuary pregnant, and give birth soon after arriving. Seeing the bond between new life and old. A natural and beautiful bond that would have been denied, but will now be free to thrive.

So much of what we are able to do to help animals,to give them that last chance to be the characters they were born to be, is dependant on kind, caring people who make the choice to leave Hillside a legacy,so that when we are asked‘Can you take them?’ we can say ‘Yes’.

It is only through kindly bequeathed legacies that we have been able to buy new land, shelters, kennels and additional facilities to care for the animals when they arrive at the Sanctuary and, if necessary, to work with them until they are ready to enjoy their new life at Hillside.

Thanks to the kindness of those who have remembered us in their will, we have had the confidence to say ‘Yes’ to horses, ponies, donkeys, cows, sheep, pigs, ducks, rabbits and lots of other animals over the last 21 years and for the animals that receive this wonderful gift, it really is a life to remember...

Our admiration and thanks go out to everyone past and present who has thought of Hillside in their Will. If you would like to consider doing so, please ring the Sanctuary office on 01603 736200 and ask for Lesley. Or email Lesley at legacies@hillside.org.uk

Twinkle comes to Hillside...

We gave a home to this poor little foal who came to us along with her mum and dad after they were all found abandoned. Twinkle, as we called her, was extremely emaciated and weak and so received lots of extra special care over the following weeks to get her healthy again.

When we are asked to help animals like Twinkle, it is very important to us that we are able to come to their aid and give them a chance. However, with our costs at an all time high providing winter bedding and hay for over 1600 horses, ponies and donkeys at Hillside, and many other animals too, it is incredibly challenging to find the space and the funds to be able to offer a lifeline to animals that find themselves in dire situations.

Sheep Rescue...

We were sent this picture of a small flock of sheep who were facing an uncertain future, asking if we could help (see below). We were pleased to offer a home at Hillside to all ten (and the cockerel)...

we need lots of... Please donate to our Winter Straw Appeal

In the winter, we need huge amounts of straw to keep our horses, cows and sheep warm and comfortable throughout the colder months. Bales of straw are used to build walls which provide warmth and shelter from the elements. We also put down huge ‘pads’ of straw so they all have dry standing. This is topped up regularly to ensure it is always fresh. As we move through the winter, towards the warmer weather of the Spring, we begin to top up the pads with straw from the walls so that nothing gets wasted.

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

Hillside horses often spend their days grazing in a meadow neighbouring the estate where Anna Sewell, author of Black Beauty, often stayed and close to where she is buried. In the Victorian period, Anna Sewell was a campaigner for animal welfare and was very much a ‘local girl’. We hope that, ifAnna had still been alive today, she would be pleased to know that HillsideAnimal Sanctuary is located so close to her.

To celebrate the life of Anna Sewell we are pleased to offer the Wordsworth edition of her book ‘Black Beauty’. A lovely gift for any young person who has not yet had the chance to read it...

We offer a special discounted price for purchases of ten or more rabbit books. Please contact us for details.

When we took over our Sanctuary at West Runton in 2008, we turned the residential property into holiday homes to raise valuable funds to help feed and care for our rescued animals.

If you would like to take a self-catering holiday on the North Norfolk coast, surrounded by our rescued animals, our accommodation offers a very special holiday location for our supporters. In addition to Shire Horse House and Shire Horse Lodge, we also offer holidays in our comfortable Mobile Holiday Home.

If this appeals to you, please write or phone 01603 736200 for further details including dates available and tariffs or visit www.hillside.org.uk

To raise funds we are always very grateful to receive any items of scrap or broken gold or silver jewellery such as the odd earring you may have in the bottom of your drawer. We can turn old, unwanted gold into funds to buy fresh hay for our rescued animals. Even unwanted costume jewellery helps to raise much-needed cash for our animals.

If you have just come back from a foreign holiday with a pocketful of loose change or notes you don’t know what to do with, these too can help us to feed and care for our animals.

While some supporters like to receive a receipt to give them peace of mind that their kind donations have arrived safely, others prefer us not to acknowledge their contributions to save us postage. We are always very happy to honour your requests, so please may we ask you to make your wishes clear. If we are unsure, we will always send a receipt. Thank you.
