In the 28 years since I founded Hillside, times have changed and we have gone from 20 acres of land in 1995 to now in 2023, where we have several Sanctuary farm locations across Norfolk I intended Hillside to be mainly a campaigning organisation, but with so many animals in need, we now have well over 4000 residents of all shapes and sizes to care for We have been able to help farmers who have come to realise that they no longer want to send their cows and goats to slaughter. We also responded to the Horse Crisis by taking in hundreds upon hundreds of horses over the last 10 years that had been abandoned and otherwise would have had their lives ended in stray pounds. We now care for more horses than any other sanctuary in the UK.
I have noticed over the last few years a growing public awareness of how our society’s treatment of farmed animals not only adversely affects the animals themselves, but also our health and the health of our planet. I am proud of our achievements highlighting the terrible conditions factory-farmed animals are forced to endure. It’s important to me that we continue doing what we can to shine a light on the cruelty of factory farms - hopefully to change how animals are treated by our and future generations. I am incredibly grateful to you, our supporters, whose kindness and compassion have enabled us to continue to provide feed and care for so many rescued animals at the Sanctuary while continuing with our important campaigning work.
Recent events around the world and the ensuing ‘cost of living crisis’ are unfortunately now having an alarming effect on the donations we are receiving. I completely understand that people are only able to donate when they have some spare pennies to send. Many people are not even sure how they are going to pay their energy bills and so it’s hardly surprising that the level of donations we are receiving is falling. However, I would ask that people please remember us. These are difficult times and there may be more to come before things get better - now more than ever, anything you can spare will make an important difference and be very very gratefully received.

We Come to the aid of 40 Feral Goats from the ‘Valley of Rocks’
Hillside was asked by Lynton and Lynmouth Town Council, if we could give a home to feral goats which had been living, and (unfortunately) breeding, in the ‘Valley of Rocks’.

After a Billy had been put in the herd, predictably, their numbers had steadily increased over the last few years and the Council were now looking to reduce the amount of animals.
With no other offers to take them, we knew the goats would be euthanised if we did not help.

            Sad News About William...

We were incredibly sad when our beloved William, the Shire horse, died at the grand old age of twenty five. We all knew William was advanced in years but as the longest serving heavy horse on our adoption scheme, it really did feel as though he would live forever. William arrived at Hillside in 1999 after being rejected by his previous owner due to his slightly imperfect movement. However, to us he was completely perfect in every way and he certainly stole the hearts of all the staff and visitors to Hillside Shire Horse Sanctuary at West Runton where he lived. William was a true gentleman who loved to meet his adoring public on Open Days. He also made many horsey friends and of course, he was particularly bonded with his special companion,Striker.

We are pleased to say the Council’s round up went well and 40 goats were safely moved to Hillside, where they can now live happily together for the rest of their natural lives.
We were glad to be able to help the Town Council, who wanted the best outcome for the goats and, although they don’t have quite the same freedom to roam that they were used to in Devon, they are still able to breathe the sea air in their new home at Hillside Shire Horse Sanctuary at West Runton

We receive lots of calls to take in pigs in various shapes and sizes and always do our best to help. Many are found on roadsides, often newly-born, after their mothers have given birth on slaughterhouse lorries. The tiny piglets fall through the slats on to the road. Others may get lost after being separated from their mothers on nearby farms.

            Piggy in the News...
Hungry pig-on-the-loose apprehended in Great Yarmouth
During the summer we were contacted by Norfolk Police, asking if we could take in a hungry pig that had been found munching its way through several gardens in Great Yarmouth. Police officers said "it seemed a bit harsh to arrest the pig for criminal damage" and, as they could not find his owner, the poor pig was brought to the safety of Hillside.

    Meet Willy
This cute little piglet was found on a road by a driver who kindly stopped to help him. Here's what they told us:
"I was driving home and I spotted something pink in the bushes next to the road... so I stopped and picked him up (he was quite happy to be caught) there were no surrounding farms so it was very odd that he was there! So myself and my sister took him and cradled him and we drove around for most of the day trying to find someone who could care for him properly... and about 6 hours later you guys were recommended!"

As many of our supporters will know, we were able to offer a home to the animals at Lotus Heart Sanctuary in Skye, after its founder, Lynn Jolly, sadly and unexpectedly passed away. Here is a message from Lynn’s son, Luke which eloquently shines a light on just how committed Lynn was to helping animals. We were proud to hear that Hillside was one of her inspirations...

It’s been another busy year for Hillside Dog Rescue! We are grateful to have been able to continue rehoming dogs into loving family homes, and particularly pleased that some of our long-term residents, like Keelo (right), who have experienced a traumatic past and need an extra special, understanding adopter, have been fortunate to have found caring homes. We’re thrilled to say they have settled in well and are enjoying their new lives.
We’d also like to thank all of our lovely volunteers for their help walking our rescued dogs, giving up their precious spare time to socialise and enrich the dogs lives. This gives them a much needed break from kennels, whilst they wait for a new home to come along.

We have been taking in and rehoming dogs since 2010. In that time, some of our original kennels have seen a lot of wear and tear, so we were so grateful when, last year, lots of supporters responded to our ‘Kennel Appeal’. I can happily say our new kennel block is now complete and full of content residents! Our dogs are much more comfortable in their new housing. These kennels are built with sturdy materials to ensure they last through extreme weathers for many years to come. The dogs are very grateful for all the kind donations which make their lives more comfortable whilst they are in our care.

When their owner sadly died, over 100 llamas were in urgent need of new homes. Fortunately, most were placed by members of the Llama Society but when nobody else came forward to take the remaining 20 animals, Hillside stepped in to help and, as you can see in the pictures, all the stranded llamas are now safely with us.

Keeping Wild Deer Safe Keeping Wild Deer Safe
People who receive our Newsletters or follow us on Facebook, will know we regularly help injured deer in the Norfolk area. We are always available 24/7 to respond to call-outs, from the Police or general public, reporting wildlife in distress.
Most injured deer have been involved in road accidents and these could be reduced if drivers are aware of wild deer in the area.
So, to warn oncoming vehicles, with the help of local supporters, we have been placing ‘Beware Deer’ signs along Norfolk roads.

If you know of a local road which deer often cross you may request a sign to help create driver awareness, reducing risk of injuries to deer and people alike...

If you’d like us to send you our Deer Warning Road Signs for you to put up in your area, you may order them by scanning this QR code. They are £10 each to cover cost of printing and postage.

Wendy also cleans the local deer road signs making them more visible to passing motorists

            Enjoying Autumn Windfall Apples...
Many of the deer we take in after they are injured in road accidents cannot be released back to the wild and so spend their days living at the Sanctuary. Wendy is often out in the countryside foraging for them so they can have a good natural diet. The deer and other animals love to eat the windfall apples in Autumn which our local supporters kindly bring to Hillside Shire Horse Sanctuary at West Runton and our Frettenham Sanctuary.

The shocking footage reveals the hidden cruelty behind every factory-farmed pork chop, every factory-farmed bacon sarnie or sausage. The female pigs are victims of artificial insemination, a vital part of the pig industry's relentless quest for maximum piglet production.

You will see the fear and confusion felt by the poor sows. You will notice the uncaring, cruel (and therefore illegal) treatment routinely meted out to them. You will see the squalor endured by the mothers and by their young, destined to be weaned prematurely, and therefore unlikely to survive without a liberal input of antibiotics.
          Farrowing
Pigs are sensitive and intelligent, just like our beloved dogs and cats. Factory farmed animals are hidden away, their never-ending suffering a dirty secret.
We hope this footage will alert people to the terrible cruelty of farrowing crates and inspire them to write to their MPs, demanding they be banned.

Hillside contacted APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) to alert them to the conditions we have found.
The purpose of our investigations is to make people aware of the reality of how farm animals are routinely treated and to help people make an informed decision about what they put on their plates.

A Hot Dry Summer Put a Strain on our Hay Supplies...

Due to the prolonged hot, dry weather in July and August, there was a serious lack of grass on the grazing meadows. We had to provide many of our horses and cows with additional hay from our winter store to keep them well fed at a time they would normally have plenty of grass to eat.
