Helping, and campaigning for, animals in need...
www.hillside.org.uk
In 1995, I founded Hillside to fulfil a vision... I wanted to make the general public aware of the immense animal suffering that goes on behind the closed doors of the intensive factory farming industry. Over the years, through our Farm Animal Investigations, we have exposed much of the grim reality of pain and suffering endured by the unfortunate animals imprisoned in the factory farming system. Twenty five years on, there has been a massive turnaround in thinking. People are much more aware of animal welfare and environmental issues caused by the food they put on their plates and I would like to think that we have played a part in this.
In the early days I intended Hillside to be mainly a campaigning organisation, taking in some animals as they came our way. But as time went on and with so many animals needing urgent help, it was hard to refuse them sanctuary. As you will know we now have over 4000 rescued animals in our care so our campaigning and rescue work goes on side by side, making Hillside one of the largest animal sanctuaries in the country.
We are often complimented on our good work and, while it is true that everyone here is totally dedicated to helping the animals, we can only accomplish this through the kindness and compassion of our supporters. I consider Hillside very much a caring partnership between those who work here at the Sanctuary and our supporters who give what they can in so many ways to help animals in need. Between us, over the last quarter century, we have achieved so much.
Thank you for caring. Thank you for Thank you for caring. Thank you for you

All our animals spend the winter at our various farm locations throughout Norfolk. Huge amounts of hay and straw are needed to keep them well fed and bedded in during these colder months...
February’s Urgent Hay Urgent Hay
February’s Urgent Hay Urgent Hay
February’s Urgent Hay Appeal.... Appeal....
A huge ‘Thank You’ to everyone who has been donating towards our ongoing Hay Appeal. The price of hay has fluctuated wildly over the last few years due to extreme weather.
At times our hay bills have almost doubled due to shortages and we struggled to find adequate supplies of forage for the animals. We require huge amounts of hay and other feeds during the colder months of the winter, which is by far the most expensive time to keep our animals well fed. So far, we have managed to give the animals all the feed they require but there are still several weeks left of cold weather ahead before the rescued horses, cows and sheep can be turned out into the fields to graze in the Spring.
We are thrilled that the short film '73 Cows' which was produced by Alex Lockwood to document the extraordinary gesture that farmers, Jay and Katja Wilde made by sending their cows to Hillside to live out their days, rather than to the slaughterhouse, has won a prestigious BAFTA award.
We are happy to add that the cows are still enjoying their natural cowy lives here at the Sanctuary.

One herd of our rescued deer (and Peppa Pig) enjoying their favourite treat of apples on Christmas Day. Thanks so much to everyone who kindly donated during the year to help us continue our important work.
Our Open Days at Hillside Shire Horse Sanctuary at West Runton begin. We also hope to be able to move many of our rescued horses, ponies, cows and sheep out onto their grazing pastures, a wonderful natural environment...
La Vizelle, or Dawn as we affectionately called her, was with us at Hillside since 1997, which is almost as long as the Sanctuary has been in existence. She had always enjoyed good health until just before we lost her.
Dawn was rescued from certain slaughter at only two years old from a sale where horses, who are just seconds too slow on the racetrack, are ‘disposed’ of.
In all the twenty two years she lived
with us, she was certainly a character and all the staff loved her. She leaves behind her field companions, ex-Police horses, Bielby, Taylor, Luxembourg and Tiltro, Poppy and her best friend Sonique another ex-racehorse with whom she has shared most of her life. We know they will all miss her very much. Thank you so much to everyone who kindly ‘adopted’ Dawn which meant she was able to enjoy a long and happy life in the Sanctuary - a far cry from the
In May we were called out to help this female Red deer who had been injured on a Norfolk road. As we arrived, the Police also turned up with a deer warden who was about to euthanise her. As no broken bones were visible, we stepped in to give her a chance. Back at Hillside, we treated her superficial wounds and left her to quietly recuperate. After a few days of convalescence, she had rallied enough to be turned out with our other rescued deer, most of whom have lived with us for several years.
situation she found herself in twenty two years ago.
Soul Train, a gentle ex-racehorse who so deserved to be rescued, will follow on in La Vizelle’s footsteps in our adoption scheme.
These two orphaned lambs came to us after their mothers sadly died. They are part of a flock of sheep we gave a home to after they had been neglected by their owner who had cruelly left many to perish. (See page 13 for story)
Prior to going out to grass for the Summer, our horses are vaccinated to protect them against Equine Influenza and Tetanus, de-wormed and have their hooves trimmed. Once they have had all the necessary treatments, they are ready to spend the summer months in their grazing meadows.
Throughout 2019 we continued to take in horses and ponies who had ended up in Stray Horse Pounds across the UK. Abandoned and unwanted, these horses are rarely claimed and would have been put to sleep had we not stepped in and offered to give them a home.
Since the horse crisis began in 2012, we have taken in over 1000 of these horses. All stallions and colts are of course gelded and all horses are de-wormed and vaccinated. Many mares arrive with us pregnant.
In 2019, twenty of these in-foal rescued mares thankfully all gave birth safely. Because foals are often born in the early hours, our staff take it in turns to watch over the mares during the night to ensure they have veterinary assistance on hand should they require it.

Without your Without your Without your Without your Without continuing donations, we would not be able to carry continuing donations, we would not be able to carry continuing donations, we would not be able to carry continuing donations, we would not be able to carry continuing donations, would carry on helping these poor animals... on on helping these poor animals... on on helping these poor animals...
Here are just some of the stories from the year...
We were asked to give a home to this poor abandoned mare. When she arrived, we noticed dark patches on her and thought she had simply been splashed by mud. We were taken aback when we realised the dark 'spots' were actually unusually large lice which she was covered in from head to hoof! Alice, as we have named her, was treated and soon felt much more comfortable
We hope for sunny days and occasional rain showers to keep the grass growing throughout these warm months. While out grazing our animals are checked twice a day...
Now safe in the Sanctuary - below are the mares and foals from a group of 17 horses and ponies who came to us from a stray horse pound. Once we had agreed to give them a home at Hillside, to save them from being shot, the pound were happy to keep them until they could travel. One of the ponies actually gave birth while waiting in the pound and their vet advised to wait a few days until the young foal was strong enough to make the 300 mile journey to Norfolk safely.
During the summer, we were offered the chance to buy a 4 acre area of land which sits between a 30 acre field used by fifty of our special care horses and 15 acres of Sanctuary land where their shelters are situated. The landowner had kindly allowed our horses to roam freely across the bottom part of the four acres, providing a vital link for them to gain access from one field to the other to reach their shelters. With the land up for sale, we very much wanted to purchase it, or else we would lose the vital link between our Sanctuary fields. However, funds were low and so we launched our Land Appeal to see if we could raise the necessary funding to buy the land. We are very happy to report that, thanks to the kindness of our supporters, we were able to raise the necessary funds and purchased the land.
This tiny Water Deer fawn was found by a member of the public, wandering in the middle of a busy road. With the mother nowhere to be seen, the only safe action was to pick her up to save her from being run over. Usually, any fawns found curled up or alone in the countryside are safely waiting for their mothers, who leave them to go off to graze for a while, then return. So, unless the fawn is in danger or distress it is better not to disturb them.
This little fawn is pictured here with an extremely tame elderly deer who is disabled and who is happy to spend his time indoors.
Reg and Nemo came to us from a ‘so-called’ animal sanctuary where the owner was prosecuted for neglecting the animals and was banned from keeping animals for five years.
Drew is one of five heavy horses we took in from the Working Horse Trust when they were forced to close in 2017 after losing their land. We thought you might like to see this picture of Drew at work in his previous home. He is now, of course, happily retired and living contentedly with all our other rescued heavies at Hillside Shire Horse Sanctuary where he is always pleased to meet the visitors on Open Days Open Days (See page 3).
The village sign at West Runton was given a face-lift recently and is looking rather nice. The sign features some history and attractions in the area, including the famous Runton elephant, which is a 700,000 year old mammoth whose bones were discovered in the cliffs at West Runton in 1990 and is the most complete mammoth skeleton ever found. The picture next to the elephant depicts horses and a donkey in a field in reference to Hillside Shire Horse Sanctuary.
The tradition of village signs is believed to have started in Norfolk early in the 20th century when Edward VII suggested that village signs would aid motorists and give a feature of interest on the Sandringham Estate.

We began receiving calls about several flocks of terribly neglected sheep at various locations around Norfolk. After investigating further, it became clear that the sheep were all owned by the same young man who had received a government grant to help him become a farmer!
Dead and dying sheep littered fields which were often ‘fly grazed’ without even having permission of the land owner to be there. Initial reports to Trading Standards seemed to fall on deaf ears. Hillside then

Since 1999 Hillside have investigated and exposed the terrible cruelty to animals on Britain’s Intensive Factory Farms. Our many investigations of these, including those in ‘high welfare assurance schemes’, such as Red Tractor and the RSPCA’s Freedom Food, have formed a comprehensive and damning indictment of a system that is intrinsically cruel.
In October Clare Druce and Peta Watson-Smith, in partnership with Hillside Animal Sanctuary, launched a petition to highlight the illegality inherent in all factory-farming. We want the Secretary of State to take note of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the 2007 Welfare of Farmed Animals Regulations and to tell us why legislation is being systematically ignored. We consider that factory farming is illegal. Why is this important?
UK animal protection law demands that intensivelyreared animals must be inspected thoroughly at least once a day. Just imagine the daily task of trying to inspect 10 thousand ducks together in one shed. Or 45 thousand broiler chickens. It's impossible! Since the
1990s, numerous examples of investigative filming in factory farms show sick and crippled animals left to suffer and die, unnoticed, in overcrowded and filthy conditions.
Clare Druce has detailed her life’s work campaigning for animals in her book ‘Chickens’ Lib’ available on page 17
The cows, horses and sheep are enjoying the last of the summer grass. Meanwhile we are busy stocking up with lots of hay and straw in preparation for the animals coming back in for the winter.
We were pleased to collect these peacocks from a housing estate where they had taken up residence. Unfortunately, peacocks can be quite vocal and some of the locals were threatening to 'silence' them. Fortunately for the birds, one kind neighbour went out of his way to catch them before they met an untimely end and we were glad to give a home to two peahens, one with a young family, and, of course, dad.
We were alerted to the plight of a swan that appeared to be lethargic and unwell. We found her and brought her back to the Sanctuary, where it became clear she was extremely undernourished. After keeping her safe and well fed for a few days she appeared to be making a good recovery so we moved her to our West Runton Sanctuary where she can benefit from the large pond there. We are always pleased to help any wildlife in trouble when we are able.
Poor Izzy came to Hillside after her owner sadly died. She wasn’t found for several days and came close to succumbing to dehydration! We’re pleased to say that we have since rehomed her into a lovely adopted family home.
Since starting Hillside Dog Hillside Dog Hillside Dog Hillside Dog Hillside Rescue Rescue Rescue we have taken in several dogs from similar situations where some pets have even died before being found.
Fiego was checked by our vets after he began to look rather ‘inflated’. They carried out several tests to try and find out what might be causing what was technically known as ‘subcutaneous emphysema’ (meaning air under the skin). A tiny scab was found, midway down the underside of his neck, which, when opened, revealed a deep puncture wound. This effectively meant that when he breathed out, he pushed air through the wound and under his skin. Fiego was operated on to remove scar tissue from the wound to enable it to heal properly. During this time, a surgical pump was attached several times a day to ‘deflate’ him back to his normal size. Following the operation Fiego made a full recovery and returned to his handsome, slimline self.
Thank you soso soso so much to everyone who kindly responded to our appeal for an independent water supply on our new farm. Prior to the installation we found the electrics needed to run the borehole were in need of refurbishment and the cost of this was almost as much as the borehole itself!
We’re pleased to say that, with the electric work now completed, the borehole has been ordered and should be installed very soon.

Just before Christmas, we were asked if we could take in the animals as the elderly sanctuary owner could no longer carry on due to her declining health.
Kath Wilson, the sanctuary’s founder, had spent her life devotedly caring for animals and even won community awards for her work. However, following a tragic accident that left her hospitalised, she was no longer able to manage her sanctuary, which was home to eight donkeys and also horses, ponies, sheep, dogs and hens.
Already facing great challenges, raising the funds needed to look after the animals at Hillside, we could have said ‘sorry, thereisno moreroomattheinn’ but, we simply could not leave Kath and her animals to face an uncertain fate and so agreed to give them a new home here at Hillside...
