Is having an online presence as a retailer crucial in

digital age?

Why? I hear you ask! Simply answered, an online presence allows you to reach a much larger audience beyond your physical store’s location. With the internet, you can connect with customers from all over the world, opening up new markets and opportunities for your business. The convenience of online shopping allows potential customers to browse and purchase products at any time, from anywhere. This flexibility eliminates the constraints of traditional store hours and geographical limitations, making it more convenient for customers to buy from you.

But how will my business benefit?

Is your next question! In a competitive retail landscape, having an online presence is essential to stay relevant and competitive. Many of today’s consumers research products online before making a purchase, and if your business lacks an online presence, you may lose customers to competitors who offer online shopping options. It has also been proven to enhance your visibility, accessibility, and customer engagement, allowing you to reach a wider audience, increase sales, and adapt to the changing retail landscape.

One of the many benefits an online presence gives is the opportunity to expand your sales potential by providing a broader range of products than what can be physically presented in a retail outlet where space may be limited. Another benefit is the chance to reach new customer segments, and implement various marketing

strategies to increase sales and revenue. Unlike a physical store with fixed operating hours, an online store operates 24/7. This means customers can shop at their convenience, even during weekends, holidays, or outside regular business hours. Your online presence ensures that your business is always accessible, maximising sales opportunities.

With the advancement of online retail do we still need a high street with retail outlets?

The role and importance of the high street in the era of online retail have been a topic of debate. While online retail has transformed the way people shop, it doesn’t necessarily render the high street obsolete.

The high street within a town often serves as a community hub where people can gather, socialise, and have face-to-face interactions. They provide a sense of belonging and contribute to the local culture and identity of each town. High streets often are a place to host events, markets, and festivals, which foster a vibrant community spirit that online retail cannot replicate.

Physical stores on the high street also offer a multisensory experience that engages customers in ways online shopping cannot. Customers can touch, feel, try on, and experience products first-hand. This tactile experience can be important for certain industries, such as trophy or gift sales. They also offer immediate fulfilment, allowing customers to make a purchase and take the product home right away. This is especially relevant for items that people need urgently or prefer to see in person before buying.

The High Street is often made up by local, independent businesses that contribute to the local economy and create a sense of uniqueness.

Supporting these businesses helps sustain the local community. They contribute to the local economy, employment, and tourism. Revitalising high streets and adapting them to changing consumer behaviours can help create thriving, attractive urban environments. Many customers value the experience of shopping locally and supporting small businesses.

Does having a retail website improve your sales?

The simple answer is yes. A retail website can significantly improve your sales for several reasons. The top seven reasons for adding an e-commerce website to your retail outlet in a nutshell are:

Expanded Customer Reach: A retail website allows you to reach a larger audience beyond the limitations of a physical store. With an online presence, you can attract customers from different geographical locations, including those who may not have access to your physical store.

24/7 Availability: Unlike a brick-andmortar store with fixed operating hours, a retail website operates 24/7. This means customers can visit your website, browse products, and make purchases at any time, even outside traditional store hours.

Convenience for Customers: Online shopping offers convenience to customers. They can browse and purchase products from the comfort of their own homes, eliminating the need to travel to a physical store.

Showcasing a Larger Product Range: A retail website allows you to showcase a broader range of products compared to a physical store with limited shelf space. This expanded product selection gives customers more options, increasing the likelihood of finding something they want to purchase.

Personalisation and Targeted Marketing: With a retail website, you can gather data on customer behaviour and preferences. This data enables you to personalise the shopping experience, recommend relevant products, and tailor marketing campaigns to specific customer segments.

Online Marketing Opportunities: A retail website opens up various online marketing channels to promote your products and drive sales. You can leverage search engine optimiSation (SEO), social media marketing, email marketing, content marketing, paid advertising, and other digital strategies to attract customers and generate sales leads.

Competitive Advantage: In today’s digital landscape, having a retail website is often expected by

customers. If your competitors have an online presence while you do not, you may lose potential customers to them. A well-designed and functional website can give you a competitive edge, attract customers who prefer online shopping, and capture sales that would have otherwise gone to competitors.

While having a retail website does not guarantee automatic sales growth, when properly executed and supported by effective marketing strategies, it can significantly enhance your sales potential. It expands your customer reach, provides convenience, and allows for personalised experiences, all of which contribute to driving sales and increasing revenue.

What are the most important things you should have on your retail website?

When building a retail website, there are several important elements you should include to enhance the user experience and drive conversions. Here are some key things to consider:

Clear and User-Friendly Navigation: Ensure that your website has a clear and intuitive navigation structure. Make it easy for visitors to find the products or information they are looking for by organising your site into logical categories and subcategories. Use descriptive labels and avoid overwhelming users with too many options.

High-Quality Product Images: Include high-resolution images of your products from multiple angles. Clear and visually appealing images help customers understand the product’s appearance, features, and quality. Allow users to zoom in on the images for a closer look, if possible.

Detailed Product Descriptions: Provide accurate and detailed descriptions for each product. Include key information such as product specifications, dimensions, materials, and any other relevant details that help customers make informed purchasing decisions. Highlight unique selling points and benefits.

Simple and Secure Checkout Process: Make the checkout process as streamlined as possible to minimise cart abandonment. Implement

a user-friendly and secure checkout system that requires minimal steps and provides clear instructions. Offer multiple payment options and ensure that customer data is protected through encryption and security measures.

Customer Reviews and Ratings: Incorporate customer reviews and ratings for products on your website. Genuine feedback from previous customers helps build trust and confidence in your products. Displaying reviews prominently can influence potential buyers and encourage them to make a purchase.

Mobile Responsiveness: Ensure that your website is mobile-friendly and loads quickly on mobile devices. With the increasing use of smartphones and tablets for online shopping, it is crucial to provide a seamless browsing and purchasing experience across different screen sizes.

Contact Information and Customer Support: Clearly display your contact information, including phone number, email address, and physical address. Make it easy for customers to get in touch with you if they have questions or concerns.

Special Offers and Promotions: Highlight any ongoing promotions, discounts, or special offers prominently

on your website. This can grab customers’ attention and encourage them to explore your products further.

Easy Social Sharing: Integrate social sharing buttons to allow customers to share products or content from your website on social media platforms. This can help increase brand visibility, attract new customers, and drive traffic to your website.

Remember that these are general guidelines, and the specific elements you prioritise may vary based on your industry, target audience, and business goals. Regularly monitor user behaviour, gather feedback, and make required improvements to optimise your retail website for success.

So to conclude, incorporating an online presence is highly beneficial for retail stores in today’s digital landscape. It allows businesses to expand their reach beyond geographical limitations, tap into a global customer base, and capitalise on the convenience and accessibility of online shopping. By embracing e-commerce and incorporating an online presence, retail stores can complement their physical presence, increase brand visibility, and stay competitive in an evolving marketplace.

While online retail has certainly impacted traditional brick-and-mortar stores, the high street still offers unique advantages that appeal to many customers. However, it’s important to adapt and evolve with changing consumer preferences and embrace a hybrid approach that integrates online and physical retail channels. This way, the high street can continue to serve as a valuable part of the retail landscape.

Choosing a Sustainable Award, from Materials to Manufacturing

At EFX we have 100% recycled acrylic and recycled aluminium available to create your trophies, so our clients can get the perfect finish they need without having to compromise on their environmental ethics.

So when it comes to awards, you need to know that your trophies, medals and plaques are as environmentally friendly as you are. Especially if you’re holding an eco awards ceremony, or if sustainability is a big part of your event or organisation’s culture and commitment.

So how do you go about finding a sustainable trophy?

In this guide we’ll go through some of the best options for eco-friendly awards, from recycled products to sustainable materials. We’ll even take a look at manufacturing methods and packaging, to see how you can reduce your carbon footprint further.

Recycled awards

One of the best ways to keep your trophy design ecofriendly is to use recycled materials.

In the past, it could be difficult to source the right recycled materials, but today there’s a much larger range to choose from.

What recycled materials are used to make trophies?

Two of the most popular materials for recycled trophies are aluminium and acrylic. That’s right, a plastic trophy doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not caring about the environment!

These are probably the most well-used trophy materials to start with, so switching to a recycled alternative can make a huge difference. So many responsible award manufacturers are now choosing recycled aluminium and acrylic awards, while still maintaining the same high quality of product.

But there are even more innovative ways you can include recycled materials in your awards. For example, at EFX we’ve designed trophies that incorporate additional recycled features, such as circuit boards. Not only do these mean there’s less waste going to landfill – they look fantastic too!

Sustainably sourced awards

You may well be asking “what’s the difference between recycled and sustainable?” but actually there’s quite a big difference between the two.

Recycled products are created from material that’s been used once before and repurposed. But sustainable materials are those that can be used without negatively impacting the environment to start with.

What sustainable materials can trophies be made from?

Our favourite sustainable award materials are stone, wood and bamboo.

Because stone is naturally occurring and easy to extract without negative environmental consequences, it’s a great choice for the eco-conscious.

Wood takes sustainability to the next level because it’s also renewable. Many manufacturers will choose sustainably sourced wood suppliers, meaning that more trees are planted to replace the ones being used.

Another great renewable trophy material is bamboo. Which, while it looks a lot like wood, is technically a grass – and one of the most eco-friendly materials there is.

Bamboo grows quickly, doesn’t need lots of water, thrives in all kinds of environments and doesn’t need to be protected with pesticides.

As green materials go, it’s definitely one of the best!

10 TROPHY & ENGRAVING NEWS JUNE 2023 EFX
More and more events and organisations are taking sustainability seriously. But that means it can sometimes be difficult to find products and partners who can live up to your high standards.

Reusable awards – perpetual trophies

If you really do want to reduce your impact on the environment, another option to consider is having a perpetual award.

This is one of the most eco-friendly trophy options, as you only ever produce one! That award is then passed along to new winners, often with a small plaque or engraving to show the names and dates of all winners.

Many people who go for a perpetual trophy also provide smaller tokens that winners can keep permanently, such as a medal. And of course, we recommend choosing a sustainable medal, such as bamboo.

Responsible trophy manufacturing

It’s important to remember that creating a sustainable award isn’t entirely about what you use – it’s also about how you make it.

When you think of manufacturing processes, it’s hard to avoid imagery of factories, smog and dust. But with so many technological advances, it’s becoming easier and easier to choose more efficient, sustainable trophy manufacturing processes.

Energy efficient production

Of course one of the biggest challenges in manufacturing is powering the factory without wasting energy.

One of the simplest ways to become more energy efficient is to make use of renewable energy. For example, our Ettington Park manufacturing plant uses solar panels to power our factory.

Water pollution

Another big environmental problem in trophy manufacturing is waste water. Water is used in many of our processes, and releasing that water into the sewer system (or worse, directly into the water system!) can have a big impact.

But this can be minimised right on site with a wastewater treatment facility that cleans up the water before it leaves the factory grounds.

Sustainable packaging

The final consideration when choosing an eco trophy or award, is how it gets delivered to you.

It would be pretty disheartening to invest in a beautiful, sustainably sourced trophy only to have it delivered in a box full of polystyrene packing chips.

But there are ways to pack and protect your award without the environmental impact. For example, using recycled bubble wrap or biodegradable loose fill.

Today you can even get paper packaging tape as an alternative to plastic. That means that your entire delivery’s packaging can go straight into the recycling – not into landfill.

Choosing a sustainable trophy manufacturer

It’s important to have environmentally friendly policies and practices built into your manufacturing processes, but some companies take things an extra step further, and partner with organisations who can help them lessen their impact further.

For example, at EFX we’re partnered with Ecologi, who plant trees and fund carbon reduction projects across the world. That means that we’re funding one tree for every order, plus another tree per £200 spent with EFX. We hope to plant 25,000 trees over the next year, as well as funding dozens of carbon offsetting projects that help communities grow through sustainability.

Designing a sustainable trophy

So, if you’d like to create an eco-friendly medal, trophy or award, there’s much more to consider than just the material you use.

Make sure you find a partner that takes sustainability as seriously as you do. Someone who can offer a range of recycled and renewable materials. Someone who considers energy efficiency and pollution reduction in their process. Our impact on the world around us matters, so it’s important to choose a trophy designer and manufacturer whose values and ethos reflects your own.

At EFX, we’ve been lucky enough to partner with many prestigious organisations to create sustainable awards. And if you’d like to find out more about working with us to create recycled and renewable awards, we’d love to hear from you! https://www.efx.co.uk/contact/

The Power of Personalisation: Making Moments Memorable

In today’s world, where products and services are abundant, standing out from the crowd is essential for businesses. This is particularly true in the gift industry, where personalisation has emerged as a powerful tool for creating unique and memorable experiences. The ability to customise gifts with a personal touch has transformed the way people express their emotions and connect with their loved ones.

In this article, TEN explores the significance of personalisation in the gift business and how it can elevate customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Creating Meaningful Connections

Personalisation adds a heartfelt touch to gifts, allowing customers to create a connection that goes beyond the material item itself. By customising gifts with names, dates, special messages, or even photographs, businesses enable individuals to express their

emotions in a way that resonates deeply with the recipients. This creates a lasting impression and strengthens the bond between the giver and the receiver, making the gift more meaningful and cherished.

Celebrating Individuality

In a world that values uniqueness, personalised gifts provide an opportunity to celebrate individuality. Whether it’s a monogrammed accessory, a custom-engraved piece of jewellery, or a personalised photo album, these gifts reflect the recipient’s personality, interests, and memories. By tailoring gifts to match the recipient’s preferences, businesses show that they genuinely care about their customers and understand the importance of catering to their specific needs and desires.

Stand Out from the Crowd

Personalisation sets gift businesses apart in a crowded marketplace. By offering customisable options, businesses provide a level of exclusivity and distinction that mass-produced items simply cannot replicate. In a time when personalisation is increasingly sought after, customers are drawn to gifts that have been thoughtfully customised. This unique selling point not only attracts customers but also helps businesses build a loyal customer base that appreciates the attention to detail and the extra effort put into crafting a personalised gift.

Emotional Connection and Longevity: Gifts that evoke emotions have a lasting impact on recipients.

Personalised gifts tap into the emotional aspect of gifting, creating a connection that lingers in the memories of both the giver and the

receiver. Whether it’s a wedding anniversary, a birthday, or a special milestone, personalised gifts become cherished keepsakes that hold sentimental value and are often passed down through generations. This emotional connection not only reinforces the recipient’s bond with the giver but also serves as a constant reminder of the special occasion and the thoughtfulness behind the gift.

Enhancing Customer Satisfaction and Loyalty: The ability to offer personalised gifts enhances customer satisfaction, as individuals feel that their needs and preferences are being met in a unique and meaningful way. By providing personalised options, gift businesses can exceed customer expectations and foster a sense of loyalty and repeat business. Satisfied customers are more likely to become brand advocates, recommending the business to their friends and family and returning for future gifting needs.

Personalisation has become a gamechanger in the gift business, offering a powerful means to create memorable moments and foster emotional connections. By embracing personalisation, businesses can differentiate themselves, celebrate individuality, and enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty. In an increasingly competitive market, the ability to provide customised gifts that touch hearts and create lasting memories will undoubtedly set gift businesses on the path to success. So, let your creativity soar, and explore the endless possibilities of personalisation in the gift business.

How does personalisation work on trophies and awards?

Personalisation plays a significant role in enhancing the value and meaning of trophies and awards. By customising these prestigious items, businesses can create a unique and personalised experience for recipients.

Here’s how personalisation works on trophies and awards: Engraving

Engraving is one of the most common and traditional methods of personalisation for trophies and awards. It involves etching names, dates, achievements, or special messages onto the surface of the trophy or award using techniques like laser engraving or traditional hand engraving. Engraving adds a personal touch and commemorates the specific event or accomplishment for which the award is being presented.

Customisation of Plaques and Plates

Trophies and awards often feature plaques or plates that can be customised with personalised information. These plaques or plates can be made from materials such as brass, aluminium, or acrylic. They can be engraved, printed, or etched with the recipient’s name, the event or occasion, the presenting organisation, and any other relevant details. This allows for a high degree of customisation and ensures that each trophy or award is unique to the recipient.

Logo and Artwork Incorporation

Personalisation on trophies and awards can go beyond text. It can also include the incorporation of logos, artwork, or custom designs that represent the organisation, event, or achievement being recognised. Using techniques like colour printing, sublimation, or laser etching, businesses can transfer logos or artwork onto the trophy or award, adding an extra level of personalisation and branding.

Unique Shapes and Materials

Personalisation can extend to the design and material of trophies and awards. Businesses can offer a range of options to suit different preferences and occasions. For example, trophies can be designed in unique shapes or incorporate elements that are relevant to the recipient’s interests or achievements. Materials like crystal, glass, acrylic, or metal can be used to create visually appealing and personalised trophies and awards.

Presentation Packaging

Personalisation can also be extended to the presentation packaging of trophies and awards. Adding customised labels, ribbons, or gift boxes with the recipient’s name or event details adds an extra touch of personalisation and creates a memorable unboxing experience for the recipient.

Overall, personalisation on trophies and awards allows businesses to create meaningful and personalised mementos that reflect the recipient’s achievements, commemorate special moments, and reinforce the significance of the recognition being bestowed. It adds a personal and emotional touch, making the trophy or award more than just a physical object and transforming it into a cherished keepsake.

How do you add personalisation?

There are various products and techniques available to add personalisation, depending on the type of item and the desired customisation. Here are some common products and methods used for personalisation:

1. Engraving: Engraving is a popular method for personalising items made of metal, wood, glass, or acrylic. It involves etching names, messages, dates, or designs onto the surface using laser engraving or traditional hand engraving techniques.

2. Embroidery: Embroidery is commonly used to personalise textile items such as clothing, bags, towels, or blankets. Names, monograms, or custom designs can be stitched onto the fabric using specialized embroidery machines.

3. Printing: Printing techniques like screen printing, heat transfer, or direct-to-garment printing are ideal for personalising items such as t-shirts, mugs, phone cases, and other flat surfaces. They allow for the application of custom designs, photos, or text onto the product.

4. Vinyl Decals: Vinyl decals are adhesive stickers that can be personalised and applied to a wide range of surfaces. They are often used to customise items like laptops, water bottles, car windows, or phone cases.

5. Sublimation: Sublimation is a printing process that transfers designs onto items made of polyester or polymer-coated surfaces. It allows for high-quality and full-colour customisation of products such as mugs, coasters, keychains, and mousepads.

6. Monogramming: Monogramming involves adding initials or names in a decorative manner to personalise items like clothing, accessories, bags, or home decor items. It is commonly done using embroidery, heat transfer, or printing techniques.

7. Custom Labels or Tags: Personalised labels or tags can be attached to gift items to add a special touch. They can include the recipient’s name, a personalised message, or the occasion. These labels or tags can be made from paper, fabric, or other materials.

8. Customised Packaging: Personalised gift packaging adds an extra level of customisation. This can include custom-printed gift boxes, ribbons, or gift bags with the recipient’s name, event details, or a special message.

Remember, the availability of specific personalisation methods may vary depending on the product and the customisation service provider. It’s important to consult with professionals or specialty shops to determine the best personalisation options for the specific gift item you have in mind.

Sublimation Education!

1. Equipment and supplier choice. This is one of the most important decisions you will make when it comes to getting started with dye sublimation. As with most things in life, it’s important to keep in mind that cheaper doesn’t always mean better – quality can vary, so it’s always worthwhile visiting trade events like Printwear & Promotion LIVE! to seek out suppliers, to speak with them in person about how they can help you get started with a new venture or expand your current business and to view the quality of their offering.

2. Never be afraid to seek help! Any reputable supplier will have in-house technical support which can be called upon for help when getting started, when looking for times and temperatures for specific products, or for advice when things go wrong.

3. Check, check and double check. Reading through the process instructions a couple of times, or discussing best practise with your supplier before starting a sublimation project can help reduce or eliminate wasted product. Always query any points that may not make sense, as – like the saying goes – ‘There’s no such thing as a stupid question’.

4. Product Selection. When starting out, it’s always a good idea to work with smaller, cheaper products such as polyester fabric or sublimation metal. Practising with these will help familiarise you with the process and feel of your equipment before committing to larger, more expensive products such as ChromaLuxe or Photo-Slates.

5. Paper and Ink selection. Many common issues we see can be traced back to these two fundamental parts of the process – especially the paper. Problems like smeared prints, roller marks tracking down the sheet, bleeding edges and more can be cleared up by switching to a good quality paper such as S-Race by Felix Schoeller, or TruePix Classic from Sawgrass. It’s always worth noting that the side of the paper you print on will also make a huge difference – and S-Race has a watermarked back to help identify the printable / non-printable side!

6. Mirror Imaging. With a few exceptions, images printed for sublimation should generally be printed in reverse. As a rule of thumb, if you’re transferring on to the front face of a product (e.g, a mug), mirror your image. If printing on to the rear (as with items like glass or acrylic) then you should keep the image ‘forward facing’. Sawgrass’ Print Manager is very helpful in this regard, as mirror imaging is enabled out of the box – meaning you can just design as normal.

7. Heat Pressing – The Equipment. When the time comes to apply your printed image to the product, your choice of heat transfer press will play a part in what you can and can’t do. Traditional ‘Clam’ presses tend to be less expensive and are good for garments and thinner substrates like metal – but a ‘Swing Head’ type (like our A4, A3 and A2 units) tend to be far more flexible when you need to press thicker products like Photo-Slates, Wall Mounts or Acrylic Blocks.

8. Heat Pressing – The Process. When laying out jobs on your press, always position your jobs centrally on the bed, leaving sufficient gap between each product (butting products up can cause them to behave as a single, larger piece which can affect the necessary pressing times and temperatures). Never mix products of different thickness or substrate!

9. Press & Product Protection. When working with sublimation, excess dye can bleed through and between the transfer paper and stain the bed. This ‘residue’ can then pass back on to other products – be they sublimation, HTV, Laser Toner, etc. To defeat this, we always advise some form of barrier paper to reduce or prevent this from happening. Products such as Butcher’s Paper or greaseproof paper work well in this capacity – but Nova Chrome also sell Pressing Paper, and Thermal Buttress Paper. Thermal Buttress paper is especially useful when you need a completely non-porous layer and can be used inside t-shirts, bags and cushion covers to ensure that no ink will escape through to the back side of the product.

10. Moisture and product storage. The way you store your products, paper and equipment will all affect the way you work, and the final pressed product. Like any piece of electrical equipment, storing and using your printer in cold, damp environments could result in poor performance. The same is true for substrates and paper – the excess moisture absorbed will cause issues like under cooking (where the ink doesn’t fully transfer across to the product), which can mean having to extend your pressing times to mitigate this. When working out the times, temperatures and pressing procedures for all our products, we start with items that have been allowed to acclimatise to room temperature for at least 12 hours – especially important for items like MDF based products and photo-slates. This helps maintain consistent conditions and means that the process stays as ‘repeatable’ as possible.
