History In 1953 the distinguished plantsman, Sir Harold Hillier established the Gardens and Arboretum.

Over many years he assembled a remarkable collection, in the aim to bring together the most comprehensive and unrivalled collection of trees, shrubs and hardy plants in the UK.

The Gardens were left under the sole trusteeship of Hampshire County Council in 1977. Run as a charity, the Gardens are continually developed to further Sir Harold’s philosophy of horticulture, conservation, education and recreation.

Last year we spotted over 20 species including; Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Redwing, Red Kites and everybody’s favourite the Robin. We also often see Fieldfares and Firecrests in January.

Help us compile a Birdwatch survey using the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch sheets. The results will be displayed at the Gardens.

We are excited to welcome back local food producers* to the Gardens for our second Artisan Food Festival.

In the beautiful surrounds of the Gardens, you can meet the friendly traders and learn about their crafts.

Many who visited last year took home bottled apple juice, pressed oils, chutneys and more. *Unfortunately we can not guarantee who or how many producers will attend on the day.
